Safari 5 doesn't memorize my toolbar icon's position

Hello,
I first set my toolbar icon's positions using the menu 'View > Customize toolbar'.
But when I restart Safari, the icon's positions haven't been memorized and they are repositioned in a disorganized way!
Is this a bug? What am I to do to have this fixed?
Thanks and regards,
Olivier.

Hi,
Third party plugins......
Since it's your Toolbar that's the issue...
Go here for instructions to uninstall Evernote may be compatible with Snow Leopard but not with Safari 5.
http://www.otanistudio.com/journal/2009/11/13/uninstalling-evernote-os-x-snow-le opard/
And 1Password should be ok. If you can update CosmoPod, uninstall Evernote, relaunch Safari.
If you still have problems go there for 1Password help. http://blog.agile.ws/post/674703181/safari-5-arrives-and-1password-3-2-is-live
Try updating CosmoPod here: http://cocoamug.com/cosmopod/index.html

I've upgraded to yosemite, and safari tells me it doesn't support "community toolbar". How can I get this feature back?

The "community toolbar" is part of the adware Conduit. You don't want that feature back!

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Safari won't restore window/toolbar/URL/search bar

    HI all,
I have a very baffling situation.  We have MacPro 2010 on 10.8.  recently my son complained that his Safari doesn't work.  I looked at it:
    1.  open Safari, and you get the menubar, but no browser window
    2.  under the menu-->windows, I find "untitled".  when I click on "untitled" a window shows up with just the "home" icon and the homepage.  no other toolbar.  "cmd-L" won't let you type URL.  no search bar either.
2a.  tried "Reset Safari"  no change
    3.  I tried changing the toolbar to default (with the address/search icon) through "customize toolbar", but no go
    4.  deleted .plist, ~/Library/Safari   still won't recover the standard window
4a.  after deleting .plist ~/Library/Safari, I rebooted the machine.  no change
    5.  when I open a new window, nothing shows.  but it lists additional "untitled" window under menu-->window
on all other accounts on the machine, the Safari works fine.
right now I'm accessing the web using Firefox.
how does one COMPLETELY reset Safari?  if I can avoid deleting ~/Library that would be good.  but if that is what it will take, I'll do it.
it's annoying how apple seems to hide application support files that it is no longer contained in the ~/Library/Preferences, etc file.  (ran into ghost iCal stuff that will keep resurrecting itself!)
I'm very savvy with Terminal and other UNIX commands.  so willing to try things.
    thanks for any help!

The culprit may be a Safari extension or third party plug-in ...
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.
If that didn't help, Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

  • Finder toolbar icons corrupted after upgrading to 10.5.5

    Hi,
After upgrading to Mac OS X 10.5.5 from 10.5.4, the icons of the Finder and Safari toolbars got somewhat mixed up. For example, the "Previous" button shows the bluetooth logo intead of an arrow pointing towards the left, the "Next" button shows a sort of portrait of a man in a frame, and the "Reload" button shows a muted speaker. This occurs everywhere those icons would usually appear in Mac OS X (e.g. also in the System Preference toolbar for the next and previous buttons, etc).
Would you know what caused this, and how I could restore the correct icons? Where are those icons stored on my machine?
    Thanks,
    Tibo.

I am having the exact same problem. Right now I am using Safari, and instead of the normal symbols for Back, Forward, Home, Autofill, Reload and Add Bookmark, I have what looks like bluetooth, contact, theatre, back, mute and a symbol of a megaphone.
The back and forward buttons in Finder look the same as they do in Safari. However, there are a few toolbar icons in Finder that look as they should, for example Quick View. I read somewhere about the folder /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app -> Ctrl-click and Show Package Contents -> Contents/Resources which contains what looks like some toolbar icons. However, it only contains some icons that I would expect to see, not the ones I am actually seeing.
And in my case too this happened when I updated to 10.5.5. The only odd things about my Mac that I can think of that might be related are:
    a) I have a PowerPC Mac (a G5, as it happens) and 10.5 "Leopard". This is an unusual combination.
    b) The 10.5.5 update did not work through Software Update and I had to download the standalone installer.
    c) I recently installed Virtual PC 7, which doesn't work 100% with Leopard.
I have recently run Repair Disk Permissions and Verify Disk, but I will run them again anyway. If I don't post an update saying that that fixed it, assume that it didn't.

  • Safari doesn't open on my Ibook G4

My Ibook G4 is a second hand computer so I reinstalled the software Mac OS X 10.3.3.
    Now Safari doesn't open anymore...
How can I fix or reinstall Safari?
    Grts!

    Hi Chuck,
As suggested above, what does Grab do when you try to open it?
If the Grab icon appears in the Dock then it "is" open. Grab is a funny little utility in that there is no "window" that opens when you open Grab. The top menu bar though, will change to the Grab menus. In these menus you can go to the Capture menu for what you are trying to do.
On the other hand, if you are saying that the application just bounces in the Dock or does nothing or opens to immediately quit, this is another kettle of fish?
Perhaps if you can post back with what actually happens when you try to open Grab we can try to get to the bottom of it.

  • Safari doesn't work after new Installation of Lion

    Hello,
I installed a new SSD into my MBP mid 2009 and put the HDD into the optibay instead of the Superdrive, after that I installed OSX Lion onto the SSD and used the Migration Assisstent to migrate my old User Folder from the HDD with the newly installed OSX Lion. After the migration, everything went well, except of the following:
-Safari doesn't work, no website can be loaded, as soon as I run Safari, there is a process running named "Webprocess" which uses 95% of the CPU and makes the MBP heating.
-VLC Media Player does not work as well
    Any idea anyone?
    thx
    Mohammad

    Another problem is:
When I start the Dropbox Application, it uses nearly 90% of the CPU as well, so the mac heats up, in a way that it is not possible to use the dropbox application...
(The Icon of the VLC Media Player  only jumps up and down in the dock, and nothing else happens)

  • How can I get an Extension's toolbar icon to display image without text (without universally affecting other icons)? How can I edit the icons text (save space)?

"From the Show dropdown menu, you can choose what to display in the toolbars: icons, text, or icons and text together. By default, Firefox shows icons only." Is there a way to choose an individual setting for a specific toolbar icon to be icon only (no text) without universally affecting all other icons on the toolbars?
Second, is there a way to edit the text on a specific toolbar button from an extension (because it occupies too much horizontal space on the toolbar due to the amount of text)? I do know how to locate the xpi file & open it with notepad, but then it's mainly code (not English) & FIND doesn't locate the button's text (to edit it).
These 2 questions should apply to Extension buttons in general. However IF it makes any difference I'm referring to the Toolbar Button in Back To Top 7.0 which says "Go to top/bottom". I'd at least like to edit out "Go to", but my questions apply to other Extension buttons too. I do realize it may be necessary to redo any fix/change each time there is an update? THANK YOU.

We use the DOM Inspector to find the IDs and Class Names of elements.

The DOM Inspector (DOMi) has a menu item (Edit > Select Element By Click) and a toolbar button "Find a node to inspect by clicking on it" (left icon on the toolbar in the DOMi).
    * open the browser window in the DOMi (File > Inspect <b>Chrome</b> Document) and choose the first from the list.
    * click the "Find a node to inspect by clicking on it" button and use the keyboard (Alt Tab) or the Task bar to go back to the browser window (do not click in the browser window other than the title bar).

  • Saving from Safari as PDF results in an icon with 0 byte volume that fails to open as it is "damaged" Why and how to solve?

saving from Safari as PDF results in an icon with 0 byte volume that fails to open as it is "damaged" Why and how to solve?

Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to print by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar may appear under the cursor. Click the printer icon.
    Step 2
There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
    Step 3
If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
    and check the box marked
    Allow Plug-ins
    Then click
    Manage Website Settings...
and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
    Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari.
    Step 5
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others — I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
    Step 6
Do as in Step 4 with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.

  • Safari doesn't show up on new user accounts

I created a new account and Safari doesn't show up. I have updated with MacOS Combo 10.6.3v1.1 and then repaired disk. Problem still occurs. My main account still works...it's only on other accounts. Any ideas??

Do they have access to the /Applications?
Is the icon for Applications in the dock?
Did you open the folder with the command or open to / or Computers?
To say there is a ? still doesn't tell if Safari is there, moved, or your account lacks access.

  • Just downloaded safari, can't locate the "tools" icon

New to Safari, can't locate the tools icon. It is not in the customize toolbar selections.

There is no Tools icon that I know of.

  • Safari is missing the thumbnail view icon.

I just updated my iPad to iOS 5 and now Safari doesn't show the thumbnail view icon in either landscape or portrait?

Yes, we want what we already had (wizard of oz style)....it's not about how it is, it's how it was (and isn't now). I wished they'd spent more time on trying to get the app store and the iBooks  store to remember where I was searching and not go back to page 1 after many, many pages!. Not waste their time on changing the whole kit and caboodle in a massive upgrade that gives us, original iPad/iPod users, something that we didn't want. What we had was fine...just needed a few tweaks and a few extras (maybe?)'not  a copy of a computer screen...that is way bigger to view in any case!

  • Add Bookmark toolbar icon

I recently upgraded to Safari 6.1 and the toolbar no longer has a + to add bookmarks. I know that you can add bookmarks by going to the Bookmarks dropdown menu and choosing command D. But is there a way to get the plus sign onto the toolbar the way it was in the older version of Safari?
I have tried Customize Toolbar but none of the icon choices are "Add Bookmark." I see New Tab, Home, History, etc. but not "Add Bookmark."
    Ideas?
    Thank you!

I no longer use that version so I'm not sure, but if there is a Share button it may bring up the contextual menu choice Add Bookmark. It's double the steps, but the same function. Command-d on your keyboard might be the simplest option.

You installed the Conduit spyware. To remove it, triple-click the following line of text to select it:
    ~/Library/Application Support/Conduit
Copy (command-C) the text to the Clipboard. Then select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the Finder menu bar and paste (command-V) into the box that opens. A Finder window may open with a folder named "Conduit" selected. If so, delete the selected folder.
Select Go to Folder again and enter:
    /Library
From the folder that opens, delete the following items, if they exist. You may be prompted for your login password.
    Application Support/Conduit
    InputManagers/CTLoader
    LaunchAgents/com.conduit.loader.agent.plist
    ScriptingAdditions/ct_scripting.osax
Close the folder. Now select Go to Folder one more time and enter:
    /Applications/Toolbars
Delete that item. Close the Finder windows you opened. Log out and log back in.

I am receiving a message when going to a web site to turn off private browsing but Safari doesn't provide me the option to turn this off. As a matter of fact it doesn't show the option at all. Anyone know how to remedy this?

Tap the blue + sign in the upper right corner of the Safari toolbar to open a new tab. Then look in the lower left portion of the screen for the word "Private". Tap that to turn off private browsing.
