Safari 5 High Memory Use

For me, Safari 5 is using a lot of memory (ballooning up to as much as 2.5 GB rather quickly). Average memory use is 2 to 5 times higher than under similar conditions (length between quitting Safari; number of windows/tabs open) with Safari 4. Is anybody else having a similar problem? Does anyone have a possible solution?
Thanks

Are extensions really the culprit? I turned off extensions, and the memory use is still high ....
I have 50 tabs open, and it takes up 2.5GB!
In Safari 4, I had 200 open and it'd take up that much space

High memory use when checking downloads folder through browser.
    I have a total of 3 DDR2 Gbytes of ram. Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU T4500 @ 2.30GHz Win 7 home pr. 64bit. Firefox 27.0 beta
I right click on a file to "open containing folder" from the drop down menu in downloads.
When the folder has been opened, explorer is trying to index the folder (which it never does completely or well after 5 minutes I close the folder and shut down the dllhost process cause laptop is blazing hot) and memory keeps increasing till no more is available.
I checked task manager and see that dllhost is the particular process that is causing the spike in memory usage even after closing the folder I right click and stop the process and memory is restored after awhile.

    Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
    * On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.

  • Windows 8 booted up high memory used

Just got this Samsung series 9 with Windows 8, 8 GB memory and 256 GB SSD drive. When the system boots up, go into Task Manager. The initial memory is at 13% used, after about 30 seconds. It surged all the way to 75% used while I am watching. I have tried
to look what is running but can't figure out what were using all the memory.
I was trying to run many programs to see how high it can go but don't have programs to test it, the most I could try (opening many browsers) the memory went up to 92%. Not sure it would crash if I have more programs running.
Here is the screenshot. (screenshot is not allowed to post until verified) How do I get verified?
Is windows 8 designed to cache a lot of memory right after reboot? I saw other posting with memory used about 40% so it doesn't looks normal to me. I Googled but can't find a similar issue.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Safari 32bit memory use vs 64bit

I have to switch Safari into 32bit mode for a particular website that uses Adobes FileOpen software for PDFs.  I normally have two Safari windows open with about 15 tabs open between them.  I know 32bit does not use memory as efficiently as 64bit mode.  But, how much difference will I see in memory use?  Or is it negligible?

    Negligible.
BTW.. if you are running the latest Flash plugin version you shouldn't have to set Safari to open in 32 bit mode anyway... or try troubleshooting by uninstalling your current copy of Flash then reinstalling.

  • Windows 7 memory use - CS-4 question

My XP machine is maxed out with 2 gig of chip memory (AMD dual core). Please, no laughing. It does run Photoshop CS 4 at an acceptable speed with 500 meg. PSD pictures.
Apparently, there is a way to set up the system drive to dual boot to Windows 7 or XP with a "virtual hard drive" set up. How much less memory does Windows 7 use as compared with XP Home?
With the early order half price for 7 Professional, it might be a way to give Photoshop some more memory (5%, 10%, 15%,?%) without having to get a new mother board and new memory chips at a far lower price.
I am using Photoshop in a non-work environment. My full time job, hasn't given me a pay raise, in the last 8 years, that matched the increase in health insurance cost, I am willing to accept less than optimal performance boost at an affordable price. And, as I'm paying off a month old Epson 3800, every little bit of savings helps.
I am aware that I might/will have to reinstall Photoshop under this set-up. That doesn't present any problem.
    Thank you,
    Bill

    Zeno Bokor,
Your statement concerning Windows 7 reducing system memory use as chip memory decreases implies that the memory management is improved and that there would be more available for high memory use applications. It may not be much, but any extra would be an improvement. With a dual boot system, I would think that some services could posibly be turned off if only one program was to be run under that OS.
While Photoshop may not care about memory specifications, I suspect that, with faster chips, at least some actions it carries out do perform faster if there is sufficient memory to carry out the operation in memory, rather than in swap file. I am sure that the operating system does. I have done all the "boosting" I can do with three physical drives. One of which can be called Photoshop swap file dedicated. The machine certainly ran CS a lot faster than the one it replaced. CS-2, through 4 were installed only on this machine.
I know that more memory is very good. However, without a new mother board, I can not increase the memory in my system. That mother board must, for current financial reasons, be able to use the chips I already have as well as have additional open slots. Any Photoshop performance gain, from more chip memory, will have to be put off for an unknown time period.
This leaves me where I am now. That is: looking for a small gain in performane (available memory), with a different OS, that would carry over when I upgrade the hardware. The half price pre-release price is affordable. A new MB and additional chips, for about a year, is not.

  • Why is my memory used so high?

I bought a new macbook air with 8gb of rat and 512gb HD and 1.4 GHz Intel Core i5. For some reason my Memory Used is super high even though I barely have anything open. It's been running pretty slow. Even when I hit the F3 button to view all my pages, it's super laggy. Any idea?

Quit Chrome and try using Safari. Why do you think it is running slow?
    Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) continuously, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

  • Why is my MacMini 6.1 always so high in Memory Used?

  • High peaks in Agent memory use

I'm having 21 hosts in my EM10g that I'm monitoring. All with various Oracle instance. Everything is running reasonably smooth, but one of the agents is showing odd behaviour.
It's on one of the Sun boxes (Sunfire 440 with 8CPU's/16Gb). While all other agents are using about 70Mb on some up to 220Mb on others, this one has peaks of 800Mb! This is consistent. I checked the others, and they don't have such peaks (no peaks, just some 'bumps' in the graphic). Very strange. I recently upgraded the Agent to 10.2.0.2 but that didn't help. I first removed the old one and installed the new one, so there can't be a mixup in versions.
Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Hmm...never occured to me to have a look in the agent.trc. I see the same message over and over again. It seems to coincide with the high peaks:

This appears every 3 hours, and at these times, I also see the peaks in resident memory usage. Top doesn't tell me anythin at the moment, because it is acting normal at this moment and memory usage is about 57Mb:

    Hi,
Testing with Visual Studio Test Manager (MTM)forum discusses Microsoft Test Management issues. Your issue is out of support range of this forum. USCGJEN72 provided some useful suggestions.
I agreed that we can check the task managers to get more information. Sometimes the computer performance may affect the Memory usage, so you can restart your PC and only start the application to release more resource.
In order to resolve this issue, if you are working with Windows Forms app, I suggest you to post your issue in a new thread on Windows Forms forum:

  • Slow Lion - really high virtual memory use

Lion is running really slow on both my Mac Mini and my Mac Book Pro. Both systems are less than two years old, both with 4 GB of RAM. I checked Activity Monitor (right after restart, running Chrome, Mail, and iTunes only) and I get a VM size of 266.42 GB! Is this normal? And could this be the reason why it seems so dreadfully slow?

    budusa,
Take a really deep breath and let it out. Relax. The universe is ok.
You have to step back at look at what your data is showing you.
    Physical Memory: 4 GB
Virtual Memory: 266.42 GB  < notice this larger than your physical.
Note the amount of memory used by your system, Wired, 675.4 MB. From what I understand so far of how OS X lion uses memory is that your system is using less a 1 gigabyte of memory.
Now note the amount of Inactive memory, 535.7 MB. I bet if you looked for the processes you used the amount they where accessing would equal that amount.
Also note your Active memory used, 1.52 GB. That was currently being used at the moment of your snapshot. Note also it could reflect was used recently also.
Ok, now look at your Free memory, 1.30 GB.
And the last part, the Used, 2.70 GB.
Do you notice something yet? Do you see it?
Ok, you have 4 GB of Physical RAM installed.
According to your information you used only, roughly, 2.70 GB of Physical RAM.
That means you used 2.70 of 4 GB of physical RAM.
Now if you notice your free memory, 1.30 GB.
    If you take 2.70 - 4 = 1.30 < notice the answer, Free memory, 1.30 GB.
Basically your system used 2.70 GB of 4 GB to run the applications listed.
Look at your Virtual Memory, 266.42 GB. Notice it larger than 2.70 GB?
My understanding of how a 64 bit OS works, and the key item why it works better than 32 bit, is the Virtual Address Space. This is how the OS allows programs to run with out taking up all the physical memory. The programs go there to play as I like to say. Another way to look at it is do want only 4 GB's or 8+ Terabyte's of Virtual Address Space?
So, the Virtual Memory you see is ok and is normal.
Do not follow some advice I have seen here about switching programs to run in 32 bit mode. You defeat the purpose of 64 bit.
If you system is running slow then look at your installed programs. Note also that if you have a small hard drive it can cause sluggishness too.
I hope this helped. Maybe it confused. Sorry for making it long as I did.

  • "Installer" high memory usage

Hey Guys, I been having problems with my mac. I'm running 10.8.5 on my 2008 Power mac tower and recently I have been having problems with my mac
going real slow. I opened Activity Monitor and Noticed something called "Installer" and it was using 90% of my memory and the only thing I can do is quit the process. Does anyone know why this is happening?

I ran EtreCheck and i'll post my results. I will add more ram after I fix the problem, and adding an SSD is a good option. I thought about it but
I was holding off because I was thinking of buying a new computer. I will try to keep my sysstem drive clean in the future. After Linc Davis posted about the Trojan i'm planning of doing that. I have a cloned mac drive, I updated the other day using SuperDuper.
    My EtreCheck info
    Problem description:
“Installer” app is running using High Memory Usage.

  • My Mac pro is running very slow. Memory used 3.99 out of 4.00

    Hello,
My mac is running very slow
    - I have noticed that memory used is 3.99 out of 4.00 and the process taking most of it is safari web content. Problem also appears when I use Firefox
    - this happens even I only have safari or firefox open. No other applications
    - I have about 80Gb free disk space
    Thanks for any suggestions

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) on the advice of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At or near the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "System Version." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
