Safari 5 Top Sites Rearranging Themselves after Quitting

Hello, all.
The thread title sort of says it all. Since upgrading to 10.6.4 and/or Safari 5, my Top Sites will rearrange themselves every time I restart Safari. Specifically, two sites are removed from Top Sites and I have to manually add them again.
Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas on fixing it?

Greetings,
Have you tried this:
Quit Safari if it's running and open System Preferences>Network>TCP/IP.
In the DNS Server window, make sure IPv6 is turned off, and enter these two DNS servers to replace the ones you currently have:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
click Apply Now and quit System Preferences.
Next, do these things in order:
1. Go to Home/Library/Cookies and delete the Cookies.plist file.
2. Go to Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
3. Go to Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Web Page Previews and delete the contents of that folder.
4. If you don't want to use the Top Sites feature, open Terminal and paste in this command:
defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSnapshotsUpdatePolicy -int 2
5. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
6. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
7. Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete these files (if you have them):
Downloads.plist
History.plist
Form Values
LastSession.plist
WebpageIcons.db
Then repair permissions and restart Safari and see if the problem remains.

  • Safari "Top Sites" Website thumbnails not populating or staying stationary.

I am running Safari 5.1.7 on a PC running Windows 7 and I am wondering if Safari "Top Sites" will keep those thumb nail pages stationary and obey the order I am trying to keep them.  Also, having issue with the Website thumnails are not populating.  Help!

I, as well, have been experiencing the exact problem that both, drpilgrim60 and iainnicol have been experiencing! I am totally frustrated with this whole thing!!!! I have searched and searched the web for a solution, but to no avail! I decided to start using Safari because Firefox sold out to MicroSoft and now force their users to allow bing on the browser, which is the worst search engine on earth. I couldn't get rid of it from my browser, and I still can't.
I am so surprised that Apple has this discussion board yet has not said anything about the glitch with their program. Do they care? I would like to think so. I have been a Mac man ever since the Mac SE30, and will always use a MAC, unfortunately, my new Mac had died and I have had to use a PC (Piece of C---) for several months now. I hope that Apple addresses this issue, as soon as possible, on this thread. If not I will have to find another web browser to use. Does anyone have any other suggestions for a browser other than Chrome and Internet Explorer?

  • "Top Sites" capability GONE after upgrading to Safari 4.0.3

    In a nutshell:
I've been running Safari 4.X June 09 with Top Sites becoming a key tool in everyday use, and a cool one at that. Top Sites worked on 15 August, did the minor rev upgrade from 4.02 to 4.03 on 16 August, and the Top Sites function is GONE on the 17th.
    The rest of the story:
Upgraded to Safari 4.0.3 last night and to my dismay the TOP SITES function is now just GONE. No explanation, no warning, just "poof."
Read through the discussions, read through the support pages, took the immediate advice to reinstall...then tried the instructions for deleting select files under under com.apple.safari...et cetera...No Joy, 2 hours lost.
Read the discussions MORE CLOSELY and found this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3410
"Safari 4: Top Sites, Cover Flow features require compatible graphics card"
So Let me get this straight...I accept a minor rev upgrade, from 4.0.2 to 4.0.3, and LOSE functionality? Really, guys?
I lose the functionality, apparently, because the Intel GMA 950 is apparently not Quartz Extreme compatible.
Ok, then, riddle me this Batman: the support article above is dated June 2009. I've been running Safari 4.X since then with top sites working quite well under 4.0.2. My early adopted 2006 Mac Mini hasn't changed since it's manufacture.
What's going on? What am I missing? Anyone else seeing this?
    G
    P.S. From the Logs
    Chipset Model: GMA 950
    2009-06-11 16:59:26 -0600: Installed "Safari" (4.0)
    2009-07-17 20:46:41 -0600: Installed "Safari" (4.0.2)
    2009-08-16 22:44:21 -0600: Installed "Safari" (4.0.3)

    Mikate,
Does your iMac have an Intel GMA 950 chipset? If not, then your comparison is not valid. If it does have the same chipset as my Mac Mini, then you may have eliminated a possibile cause. (same os + same chipset=reasonable assumption)
The central issues is still the loss of major functionality under a minor rev change.
What changed? The requirements for Top Sites to work? Then why did it work for me under 4.0.2? According to the article, Inel GMA 950 is not specifically named as supportable and therefore the function should not have worked at ALL when safari 4.0 was installed. NO Mac specific drivers from Intel at Intel's web site. Have NOT seen any under the apple support pages, but I could be missing them.

  • Safari Top Sites Blue Stars Missing

As of yesterday, Top Sites no longer shows the little blue stars when a page is updated. I can force them to appear if I quit Safari and restart it, but they won't update on their own as they used to periodically, even though the thumbnails still update. I tried using time machine to replace the app file and preferences from several days ago, but this hasn't solved the problem. Any ideas?

    Hey guys.
Need to join the desperate team. My Top sites wont allow any other manually added site - it will get deleted right after i restart safari.
I have checked the other forums where were suggestion for binning the com.apple.safari and top sites plist - doesn't work. Standard cleaning procedure like emptying cash, reseting safari or not too standard binning some preferences files - not working. None of them is in banned sites - i binned it also
I need to add its a new thing because it was working until last week. Maybe some updates could damage something, though i can remember any new updates in last two weeks. Please be geeks, find the answare, it was very cool feature and its pitty its not working.

  • Safari 'Top Sites' issues

I just updated my Safari to version 6.1 and the panel displaying the 'Top Sites' is not sleek and circular, like it used to be before the update. It does not display the 'History' button either. I tried going into Safari preferences to fix it but I am a new Mac user and quite ignorant. Any help to revert it back to the old, sleek circular panel would be appreciated.
    New Panel after the update:
    Old, sleek and circular Panel:

I am bummed about this too because I really liked the look of the older top sites...why couldn't they keep that look as an option and then improve the drag and drop too! Ayi...makes my want to go back to the older previous version. not sure its worth it though.

  • Safari Top Sites Not Updating

My Top Sites is not self-updating. I no longer get the 'star' notice when a web page has been changed and the image shown on Top Sites is from my last visit to the site.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks.

I'm having the same problem with the Top Sites thumbnails not updating themselves (without having to manually visit the site). It had been working, but now it has not for a couple months. I forget if it coincided with updating Safari to 4.0.5 or not; it seemed like it was right around that time.
I should also mention that my internet connection and setup have remained consistent from the time that it was working to now. I am not behind a firewall or proxy of any sort.
(Note to Jared_Dub: The blue star is shown on thumbnails that you placed there manually as opposed to your most visited pages which Safari automatically places. It has nothing to do with showing you if there have been changes to the page or not. Just thought I should clarify that point.)

  • Safari top sites taken over by pop-up websites

Hello! I only use Safari for my streaming of movies and soccer games, and recently when viewing my top sites it is full of fake dating sites, betting sites and generic (youtube style) video sites. I understand popups don't register to your history, so how did these sites register into my top sites? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Security tab.
Mek sure:   Block pop-up windows   is selected.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, install the AdBlock for Safari extension here.

  • Safari Top Sites: Single click not enough

I don't know if this is a bug or anything else, but it's a bit annoying:
When you open a new tab in Safari and the Top Sites shows up, a single click on a site doesn't get you to the page, it just updates the Top Sites so the blue border is shown around the sites.
This is what it looks like: http://youtu.be/88W_KJAj8Hc
I hope this bug gets fixed soon or anybody has got the solution to this.
    Greetings
    Silvan

It's not possible to mark as unsolved.
You didn't mention you were doing this in full screen mode in your first post.
Try troubleshooting extensions and third party plug-ins.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that off if there are any installed. Quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, turn extensions back on then uninstall one a time to test.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow all other plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.
If nothing above helped, try a Safe Mode boot. A Safe Mode boot deletes some system caches thay may help.
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes a longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from your Apple () menu.
Then try Safari TopSites in full screen mode.
BTW, it's not a bug. No problem using TopSites in full screen mode here.

  • Safari top sites issue

When I click on the top sites they won't open. They open if I click on those same sites' bookmarks or if I type them in, but there's no reaction when I click on them when their previews show when I open a new tab or window. Anyone else has the same issue? How did you fix it?

    MIght be corrupted preferences ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Safari/TopSites.plist
Click Go then move the TopSites.plist file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

  • Safari top sites/history

I have been trying to remove history and top site data form safari, i already tried:
1- reset safary (all options checked)
         Safari > Reset Safari...
    2- Clear history
          History > Clear History...
3- Remove All Web Site Data
Safari > Preferences > Privacy > Remove All Website Data ...
    4- Edit Top Sites:
         History > Show Top Sites
         Edit
         Delte one by one
I tried them one by one, all together, close and reopen safari, restart the mac and shutdown, regardles of what i do the top sites will always come back, history is always gone, i read diferent post and get all the suggested ideas that i have used but so far top sites are always back.
Im on a macbook air 13" mid-2012, runing Mac OS X(10.8.4)
    Any suggestion?

    hi,
Yes im logged as admin, the problem is with "Top Sites" only, everything else get removed without any problem.
I just notice that it happen when i clear history and select "Reset Top Sites" if i do that then the top sites will be recreated out of nowhere. so i have to uncheck "Reset Top Sites" (on clear history or reset safari option).
The link you send explain why it happen but still is kind of anoying to have things that i have never use there.
    Reset Top Sites:
Clears any changes you made to Top Sites, such as adding or pinning sites. If you also clear your history, your Top Sites page reverts to showing the webpage previews displayed when you first installed Safari.
    The "solution" was
1- History > Show Top Sites
    2- Edit
    3- Remove all Top Sites
4- Uncheck "Reset Top Sites" from any clear option (Clear History and Reset Safari)
    second solution... I installed chrome
Does anyone knows how to tunr off Top Sites, or how safari desided which sites are top after reseting top sites? For instance i have never used twitter and it shows up as a top site.

  • Safari top site list and PubSub client list override

After finding the PubSub client.plist was causing my system to go out and update some RSS feeds I had not been into in years - found I could delete the list and the file was recreated when I went into Mail or Safari.
Mail created the clean list I wanted but when I went into Safari it added the old sites to the client list.
Found that the TopSites plist in Safari folder had the rss sites in it -- so I went to top sites screen and removed all of the top sites (I don't use it)  then delete the client list in PubSub and went on-line etc.
At this point client list is still clean and no bogus feeds (also in pubsub) coming in.
Assume if it was reported in SnowLeopard assume it would have been fixed - if it wasn't reported - may be causing slow downs in later versions so I reported it to Apple in Feedback.
Has anyone else had this problem and found other places to clean up?
(Can't get software on media so can't update -- and based on download problems seen here bet a lot of people would rather get the media - and I do tell this to Apple in every feedback)

    Hi Nic,
As the official documents said, this registry key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\EnterpriseMode] “Enable” = “” | {URL:port} can also be used to collect manual overrides. By configuring the “Enable” key with a
valid URL and port, Internet Explorer will initiate a simple POST to the supplied address whenever a user enables or disables Enterprise Mode. This effectively helps customers crowd-source lists of compatible Web apps from their own users, which may decrease
    triage and testing costs.
Approximately 65 seconds after Internet Explorer 11 starts, it looks for a properly formatted site list. If a new site list is found, with a different version number than the active list, Internet Explorer 11 loads and uses the newer version.
This is designed by default, and we cannot reset the by preventing the changes.
We may try to logon script to re-deploy the original site list to reset the site list settings.

  • 10.6.2 update - the graphics distortion in Safari Top Sites is not Fixed!

I felt so relieved after updating- 10.6.2, because the annoying graphics distortion in safari when clicking top sites is gone.. gone for about 1 day only. && now its happening again! IDK why??? i installed the update correctly. && about this mac says i have the version 10.6.2.
is anybody here experiencing this? ( apple has to work on this. its annoying! )
oh! another prob. too! THE START UP SLOW DOWN!? -before it takes 32 or 34 sec to boot up. Now with 10.6.2 installed it takes about 50 sec. to boot up. well i don't mind waiting for another 15 sec. - i just wanna know why.

    Hello lyon09,
Unfortunately i have not yet made it to the Genius Bar as of yet. I ended up canceling the appointment i re-scheduled too and haven't made another one. Basically, i was only gonna go in just because i said the Battery gave me a "Service Battery" error message, which means that "the battery isn’t functioning normally, and you may or may not notice a change in its behavior or the amount of charge it holds. Have your computer checked by an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP). You can continue to use your battery before it’s checked without harming your computer."
So that was gonna be my main reason for going in there, and at that time discussing and showing him what Top Sites is doing to me.
    1. Top Sites has a distorted graphics that have been there since 10.6 came out....10.6.1 was supposed to fix it, did not....then 10.6.2 was supposed to fix it, and as of right now it still is not fixed.
I have done an Archive & Install with no success.
    2. Battery showed me that Service Battery error message just that one evening. My battery was drained completely and when i plugged it in and got it working again, the Service Battery error was there for about 45 minutes or so until it got a sufficient charge it decided it would go away. I haven't seen it since.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/20865.html
It has now been about a week since i last saw that message.
That was my main reason for canceling the Genius Bar appointment, because the battery seems to be working for the time being. If i see that message again though, then i won't hesitate to take it in.
I'm starting to wonder now though, should i just take it in anyways. Because if i saw that message, on the battery, and they need to replace that - then if there is some other reason for the distorted graphics in Top Sites, like maybe the Logic Board....then i want to get it fixed. It's under warranty for 3 years.
I just haven't found reason other than having that fluke Service Battery message to go in and have it checked out. If my video gets really whacked out or i see that battery message again, then i'll go promptly.
Does anybody else have any input on this? Thanks!

  • Shaky safari top sites page

When I open a new window or tab with the top sites, all the top sites "SHAKE". I have a screen recording of this, but I have no clue how to (or if I can) post it. It happens all the time… I am not sure how to tell if it is running in 32 bit or 64 bit.

    HI,

Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window undre the General tab you wil see the option for "Open in 32-bit mode"...
Try a new window or tab with Top Sites. If the "shake" persists. If it does ...
