Safari 5 URL bar searches page title in addition to URL

I just upgraded to Safari 5. Now whenever I start typing a URL in the URL bar, it gives me suggestions based on the page's title in addition to the page's URL. I want to disable this new "feature" and go back to the old functionality where it only suggests pages by URL.
Thanks.

I agree, I do NOT like this new feature. Say I earlier went to an eBay sub-page, now I want to go to the eBay home page. I start typing e-b-a-y and it autofills the URL for the eBay sub-page I visited earlier.
I do not want to go to that one, so I press "delete", which simply removes the autofill suggestion and also the "y" in ebay, so I type the "y" again and the same suggested page fills in.
So now in order to go to the eBay home page I must type "ebay.com" whereas before I could just type "ebay".
Before Safari 5 these "already visited pages" would show up as a drop-down window, which I could scroll down to and choose if that's where I wanted to go. Now, though, that they're coming up in the address bar I'm forced to go there or type in the complete URL.
How can I turn this feature off. I know there's a Terminal command to do it, because there are Terminal commands to turn on and off many other features of Safari.
I do not wish to simply use Private Browsing because that turns off suggestions from my Bookmarks.
Help!!

• Safari address bar search behaviour

Hi,
I am a recent convert to the Mac platform and since moving over I have experienced a number of problems with Firefox. The most marked problem is very poor flash video (YouTube) performance i.e. choppy & stuttering playback until entire video has been loaded, but overall it is slow and sometimes hangs (spinning ball) for no apparent reason.
I have tried Safari and have found it's performance to be wonderful compared to Firefox, and there are no problems with flash video. However I have some issues with the address bar search behaviour and I am wondering whether this is normal or not.
In Firefox, when I type something into the address bar, search results from history and bookmarks appear. The same thing happens in Safari, but it seems the only way to get a bookmark to appear is to type the actual domain address, not the name of the bookmark. Also, if a bookmark has a subdomain other than www, then that must be typed otherwise the address won't appear.
For example, if I have a bookmark as follows:
Apple - Support - Discussions - Forum Home - http://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa
I can't bring that site up by typing apple, support or forum in the address bar, I have to type the subdomain name discussions in order for it to appear.
I am posting to ask whether this is normal behaviour and whether it can be changed so that address bar search can include the bookmark name as well as the domain name itself. Thanks for your help,

Yes, it's perfectly normal; and no, you can't change the behavior to recognize the page name of the actual URL. You can always send feedback to Apple and request that feature; they might actually do it sometime in the future. Use this URL:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

• Getting a 404 error on URL bar searches

Previously I could do a search on the URL bar, without having to search for things using the google toolbar on the right. I am running Firefox 29 on Win 7. I have already cleared the cache.
I have tried going to about:config, adding "keyword.url" string (with google as the value).
I also tried an add-on by Mike Kaply called "Keyword Search 1.0.7"
What else can I try? I really want it to work as it did before.
And yes I am aware firefox took it out because of security issues in v.28 (right?) but there has to be some work around. 14 years of habit are not going down without a fight.

Hello,
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
#*Windows:
#**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
#**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Installing Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.
<b>WARNING:</b> Do not run Firefox's uninstaller or use a third party remover as part of this process, because that could permanently delete your Firefox data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. <u>These cannot be recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!</u>
Please report back to see if this helped you!
Thank you.

• How to disable the URL bar from receiving focus after a page click

When I click on any link within a webpage, the new webpage will load up. I start hitting the UP and DOWN arrows to start scrolling through the page. But Firefox has stolen the focus from the webpage and given it to the URL bar. So I start to see URL history popup in a drop down list from above.
This is very annoying.
Is there a way for the URL address bar from stealing the focus, and just display the current page's URL?

Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

• Highlighting from the url bar

This is probably an obscure grievance but as I'm trying to switch from Chrome to Safari one of the issues I have is on Chrome when you'd click the url bar once it'd highlight the entire url to either delete or write over, with Safari you have to triple click to get it all highlighted. Is there a preference to have it one click like Chrome?

No way to be able to just click anywhere on the url? I know about the favicon I just have a real finicky trackpad on the old macbook I use on occasion.

• I need my url bar back. The customized search bar is 6x larger. I don't need this in addition to a Google page for searches. I need to see what I am trying to access. How do I enlarge the url window and shrink or delete the other window?

I can't see what I am typing in the URL bar. Maybe 5 characters are visible an a time. The Translator Bar Covers over half of the open window.

Mozilla hasn't changed anything like that in Firefox 3.6.x versions, which is getting security patches but not any further development of new or existing features. Plus, Mozilla doesn't install anything related to Yahoo, something else probably installed that.
Please provide a screenshot of what you are talking about. <br />

There was a feature similar to what you are describing, that was in and out of the Firefox 4.0 betas last fall, but the 3.6 versions never had anything remotely like what your description has me visualizing.
Ate you sure that one of your add-ons isn't doing that? <br />

• Keep getting "invalid url" when searching title bar and built in google search.

When I use the title bar, or the home page to search using google, i get "invalid url". If I manually type in www.yahoo.com, or any other site, everything works fine. Usually if I restart the computer, everything is normal again. This does no happen all the time, but once it starts, it wont go away. I even restarted in safe mode and then disabled all add ons and still nothing.

Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

You can reset the browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone pref via the right-click context menu to the default on the about:config page and close and restart Firefox to restore the about:home page to its default.
* Open the <b>about:config</b> page via the location bar
* Type in the Filter bar: mstone
* Right-click the browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone line and select: Reset
* Close and restart Firefox

I did try to delete cache and plist etc, everything i read in the net but still not working. I have mac pro 2011, and I'm not sure but i think this happened after i open a second account for my girlfriend in my mac, so she can have her own account. I check and in the other account happen the same...some ideas?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Have safari logo but search bar or page won't appear?

Make sure the firewall is turned off in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Firewall
Disable anti virus sofware if installed.
If nothng above applies, try troubleshooting Safari extensions and third party plugins.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow all other plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.

• The URL bar can also be used for a search engine, but when I search something a page pops up reading "The URL is not valid."

When I click on the URL bar it says to insert address or search, yet when I search it says the URL is not valid, which is obvious because I didn't put in a URL, I searched something. I never installed an add on or anything. It just quit working one time and hasn't worked since.

Does it happen to all the search words or particular words?
It may be a malware issue too.
The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. <br>

To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.

• Have recently updated firefox. Previously, opening a new tab, cursor would be in google's search field, as google was my home page; now when I open new tab, cursor appears in url bar; this is bugging me a lot. How do I fix this setting?

• How can I display the URL bar and bookmarks bar when I have the addons page opened?

It seems counter-intuitive to me that the Firefox addons page does not have the same toolbars that other tabs have, and I have not found an option to add them back in (or an addon to fix it). Instead of being able to enter a URL directly from the addons page or click a bookmark, I must navigate away from the tab before I can go anywhere else. Additionally, it graphically looks out of place when I shift through tabs and most of the toolbars disappear for a second as I move over the addons tab.
Some other utilities that use their own pages manage to preserve the toolbar customization without removing it completely, so I'm wondering if there's a way for the addons page to do it as well.
An example of another utility that has its own page without removing the toolbars is the Download Manager Tweak addon. One of its options allows the user to open their download page as a tab, which also contains the toolbar customization of normal, browser tabs.
Thanks in advance!

Just for reference:
The solution to press a hotkey to move the text focus to a hidden navigation item (e.g. the URL bar or the search bar) was only a temporary fix, and only worked for Ctrl+K (search bar, maybe ctrl+E too but I didn't test it).
The problem didn't really bug me all too much until tonight, so I installed the Stylish script from the StackOverflow link above and the problem is solved now.

• How do I get the following to the left of my  search bar: one page, X, reload page?

how do I get the following to the left of my  search bar: <> one page, X, reload page?

The reload page button is no longer an option in Safari—it's been integrated into the URL bar itself. For the other buttons, you can right-click (Control-click) on the toolbar, select "Customize Toolbar", and drag the buttons on to any part of the bar.

• Major bug in Safari 6: previous domain persists in URL bar when clicking a link

I've noticed an extremely weird and significant bug in Safari 6 / Mountain Lion:
When I'm navigating through a site, sometimes when clicking a link, Safari tries to open the corresponding URL on a previously visited site's domain instead of the current site.
For example:
First, I'm surfing on apple.com. Then, I navigate to another site, say estibot.com. On estibot.com, I click on a link that should take me to:
http://www.estibot.com/tools.html
Instead, safari takes me to http://www.apple.com/tools.html, which of course produces a 'not found' error. Nothing wrong with the link; this is purely Safari's doing.
This happens often, and apparently can happen with any site.
In other words, the domain name of a previously visited site persists in the URL, and the page that I'm trying to navigate to is added to the domain of the PREVIOUS site, not the actual site I'm using.
This is a major bug and is often rendering Safari useless for my workflow. How could a bug like this end up in the finished product?
Cheers
Esa

Having the same problem. It is randomly consistent, i.e. some links consistently get redirected to a specific domain. For example, I am experiencing this issue when using Basecamp and links being misdirected to a specific client's website. However, the criteria for why some links redirect and some do not appears random. This issue does not occur in Firefox. This leads me to believe that it is not a DNS issue. May be a Safari/DNS pair issue or solely a Safari issue. We do use an internal DNS (OS X Server) for browsing internal development wbsites which then rolls over to a public DNS. Again, this problem has never occured in Firefox and consistently occurs in Safari.
Safari Version 6.0 (7536.25)
Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4
On a side note...
Safari's strong-handed rewriting in the address bar as you type is crazy anoying. Or should I say "too helpful?" It seems to break the first rule of usuability: don't change the interface while the user is interacting with it.
And the unified address/search is rediculously annoying for developers who use non-complient top level domains for internal development (such as .dev)
And the new inspector seems like a huge step backwards in usuability. (debatable considering I'm probably not as advanced as some developers.)
