Safari 5 - using Version 5.0 (5533.16) slow, times out, pages not displayed

I'm posting this using firefox as Safari is just about useless. Had no problem with version 4. Constantly getting the message that safari can't open the page "http://........" because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection or is busy. The wheel spins forever and pages occasionally are displayed wrong. This doesn't happen with Firefox. Firefox displays must faster. When I reset Safari, seems to help for a bit but not for long. Don't recall this with Version 4. On OS X 10.5.8. Any thoughts on what could be causing this. Have a Macbook Pro with 10.6.x which doesn't seem to have the problem.

Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security:
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:

If your computer is part of a network: please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/bestpractices/#yournetwork and follow the advice given.
You could also try these codes as well: 4.2.2.1 & 4.2.2.2

I have a suspicion you're working with a scanned document that has had OCR run to recognize the text. The recognized text may be stored on an invisible layer above the image of the text, and that is what you're toucing up. It's invisible, so you don't see it, but retains the changes, so exporting produces the new edits.
When you run OCR to recognize scanned text,, try using the ClearScan option, instead of Searchable Text. See this help page on Acrobat (this is for version X, but still applies):

  • The first time I connected my new My Passport portable hard drive to my Mac, the message asking if I want to use the drive to back up with Time Machine did not appear.  What is the next step?

The first time I connected my new My Passport portable hard drive to my MacBook Pro, the message asking if I want to use the drive to back up with Time Machine did not appear.  I would like to set it up to do this.  What would my next step be?

    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Open Time Machine preferences to select this drive for use as the backup drive. Turn on Time Machine.

  • Pages Not Displaying In Older Versions Of Safari

Several people have told me that my new site does not display in versions 1 or 2 of Safari. It works in Window IE and Firefox and Firefox on the Mac. The Home page will display if they click anywhere on the blank page. Is this an iWeb or .Mac problem and can it be fixed or what do you see?

As a small business site, this must work, what should I do?
    Thank You for your feedback.

Your site looks great to me. I'd suggest that you try a variety of browsers. I had one of my pages (a blog home page) list about 18 recent stories. This caused people with IE7 to have their systems seem to crash. I reduced the number to 5 then it worked.
You'll want to play around with the different themes and see which one(s) work best for the widest number of browsers. I choose to use Modern because it seems to load the quickest.

  • Page not displaying in Safari and Internet explorer but showing up in Mozila

    Hi,
I bought this pre-made template which I would like to use for my website. When I upload it to my website and try to open the pages like "Contact us", "News", "Team members" and so on, they are not displaying in Safari and Interner Explorer, but they DO show up in Mozilla. Also, the pages I created myself do show up in all browsers. I really need to fix this problem as I already put a lot of effort to create my web site and now it is not working online. I would really appreciate some help. Here is the link to the original template:

    Thanks,

The tag should read "myself" (no quotes) not "_self".

For cross OS browser compatibility (and no "embed" tag code) you should consider using javascript:

With all of my skills I could not get your "hotspot" to open a new html page:

  • I have tried to add a NEW GMAIL Account into Thunderbird and after i use the automatic configuration finder and Password confirmation, it does not display

I tried to set up a NEW Gmail account in Thunderbird But it will not display eventhough it confirms that the configuration is correct and that the password is Valid. Please NOTE that i previously was able to set up the email account correctly in Thunderbird but was encountering some errors and i therefore deleted it using the Account Actions menu.
I have repeated this action probably probably 5 or 6 times and I still cannot see the new email account in Thunderbird. I can only see my other Gmail Account
Would appreciate someone sharing with me a step by step answer to help me fix this problem as I have no clue

Sounds like the Google Less Secure Application situation. Go to gmail and read what they have to say about this.
FYI: Deleting and reinstalling accounts or Thunderbird software is not the best way to solve problems. It usually never solves a thing and can cause more issues as you are seeing. It is best to troubleshoot what you have and fix those issues.

  • I am using version 3.6.16 and my "reload current page button" is not working. What should I do?

When using my Firefox version 3.6.16, the "reload current page" button, which is a blue arrow shaped into a counterclockwise circle, does not work. When pressed, literally nothing happens.
I am using Windows XP Media Center Edition version 2002. I am not new to Firefox and this problem has not occurred before on this computer.

    You can try:
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Corrupt_localstore.rdf
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

If images are missing then check that you do not block images from some domains.
*Tap the Alt key or press F10 to show the Menu Bar
Check the permissions for the domain in the currently selected tab in "Tools > Page Info > Permissions"
Check "Tools > Page Info > Media" for blocked images
*Select the first image link and use the cursor Down key to scroll through the list.
*If an image in the list is grayed and "<i>Block Images from...</i>" has a checkmark then remove this checkmark to unblock images from this domain.
Make sure that you do not block (third-party) images, the <b>permissions.default.image</b> pref on the <b>about:config</b> page should be 1.
Make sure that you haven't enabled a High Contrast theme in the Windows/Mac Accessibility settings.
Make sure that you allow pages to choose their own colors.
*Firefox > Preferences > Content : Fonts & Colors > Colors : [X] "Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above"
Note that these settings affect background images.

  • Mobile Safari cache - Correct page not displaying on "back"

Frequently when I am browsing a site I will 1) go to the home page, 2) tap a link to a subpage on that site and then 3) tap the back button to return to the home page.  I am finding that frequently the home page will be a cached version from, usually, the previous day and not the most current home page.  I've experienced this on many sites.  I've tried to "fix" this by Clearing History and Clearing Cookies and Data but it keeps happening, although not all the time.  I think that this started with iOS 5, but I'm not sure.  Any ideas as to why this is happening?

You are not the first user to report this problem with Safari and iOS 5. Here is a rather lengthy discussion about the issue. There maybe something in here that will help you.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3385843?start=0&tstart=0
I don't know that I have seen a fix for it yet. You could download another browser - I use iCab Mobile and Atomic and they both have far more to offer that Safari does. I know this does not solve the problem - but it may end the frustration.

  • Iweb and Safari 5: pages not displayed correctly

Hello. I am designing some pages that appeared just right in Safari 4, but now that I use Safari 5 they are all wrong (they do appear correctly in Firefox and Opera). Is anybody having the same problem?

Tom thank you for answering. I take it back. I reinstalled Safari and everything works fine now. I am closing this issue and erasing the message if possible.

  • IWeb pages not displaying images in Safari v312.6, Firefox or IE 5.2

Ever since I started using iLife 08 and the new iWeb to create my online photo albums, some users of Firefox and one user of Safari v312.6 and IE 5.2 for Mac can't view the images on my pages.
Can anyone tell me why? I realize there is a fix out there for Firefox so I'm more concerned about Safari and IE 5.2. The user is my mother in law and she really wants to see pics of the grandkids.

For the Firefox issue see http://diamondsw.dyndns.org/Home/EtCetera/Entries/2008/6/18_Firefox_3_andiWeb.html.
Don't know why Safari wouldn't work. Can you provide the URL so we can view ourselves?

  • Safari 3.2.1 and 10.5.6 slow loading/incomplete pages

Safari was working perfectly inder 10.5.5, but since upgrading to 10.5.6 it is almost unusable. Having huge problems loading large graphics intense pages (such as newspapers, well almost anything...). Firefox is also having exactly the same problems. Anyone else getting this? Deleting caches, resetting Safari, deleting preferences, repairing permissions etc has not helped at all.

I am not really shure if the DNS really is to blame. I have a WLAN with 4 different machines connected, the WLAN-Router attached to a DSL and acting asDHCP DNS forwarder. The connected machines are a Intel iMac 1st generation, a G4-iBook, an iPhone 3G and a Windows XP machine, both Macs are running 10.5.6, only the Intel iMac has the pausing problem since the 10.5.6 update, but I saw it only in Mail and Safari, not in Firefox or other applications using network connectivity without using webkit.
Only on the Intel iMac I added the OpenDNS entries to my network settings, which of course solved the problem. But: the three other machines do not have those additional DNS entries, they only have my DSL-router as DNS forwarder, and they still do not have any problems.
I guess it is an implementation problem with handling DNS queries in 10.5.6, maybe it works now because there are now more than one DNS entries in the network settings and not only one? So maybe a deadlock/threading problem?

  • Downloaded latest version of FF and now the Yahoo toolbar will not display when I enable it to?

I have checked the settings for displaying the Yahoo toolbar on FF. Has always worked fine until now?

Finding where to get the new versions of Firefox or the Yahoo toolbar is not the problem, I know where those are since I have uninstalled and downloaded them both 3 times...but last night did find some solution when I logged out of Yahoo to log on with one alternate ID I use, when I did that the toolbar showed up.
So I logged out ad back in with my primary ID and it still showed up. But I did see if I logged out, closed Firefox, open Firefox again and sign in with my primary ID the tool bar once again doesn't display until I log back out back on again.

  • Firefox 31, using phpmyadmin on a webserver, the login times out after about a minute. Didn't occur with v30, doesn't occur with Chrome.

Just upgraded firefox from 30 to 31. Using phpmyadmin on a webserver, (this is running under Plesk), after a short time, typically 1 minute, I get a pop-up that the session has expired and I have to log in again. This didn't happen with v30 and it isn't happening with Chrome. It doesn't happen with the Plesk control panel, just the phpmyadmin session. It looks like a problem caused by the latest version of firefox.

If clearing cookies doesn't work then it is possible that the cookies.sqlite file that stores the cookies is corrupted.
Rename (or delete) cookies.sqlite (cookies.sqlite.old) and delete other present cookie files like cookies.sqlite-journal in the Firefox profile folder in case the file cookies.sqlite got corrupted.
