Safari 5 way to sloooww
I had a plug in problem then flash player, downloaded 10.5.8 combo and it seemed good. Now iPhoto runs way slow and internet loads way slow. any suggestions??
what if I upgrade to Snow will that solve the woes of #5?
Currently running 10.5.8 on G5
MBP runs great w/Snow and 10.6.3.
what do you think???
anthony --
If it were me, I'd try really hard to fix the problem before updating.
Sometimes that helps, but if there's an underlying problem, it will just get worse, IMHO.
So, your problems now on 10.5.8 are:
iPhoto too slow
Internet slow
How much space do you have available on your hard drive?
Go here to find out:
Hard Drive icon (upper right corner)
Select that, and press the Apple/Command along with the letter "i" key.

This is really frustrating me because I can't seem to get the pages to look the same in every browser. I don't have IE (I have a Mac) so I have no idea what it looks like... Please help if you can.
The page is located: http://www.promarevents.com/VA/work.html
The css is located: http://www.promarevents.com/VA/va1.css
Here are some screenshots of what is going on:
Safari, this is how it should look...
This is Opera. The image is pushed down and the text runs off the layer. The same exact thing is happening in Flock and Firefox....
Flock having the same look.
I tried changing the code so it looked good in Firefox and Opera, but then Safari was way off... I received the files from a friend who wants me to make some "minor" changes but this is frying my brain! Thanks!AlieneGirl,
Not having looked closely into the CSS, it seems that something in the background has an excessive fixed width, and the VA logo with the gradient seems to be centred in it, whereas the box is locked to the right edge.
If you use a sidebar and change its width, more and more of the VA logo becomes visible as the available width on screen is decreased. -
I allowed Apple updates about two weeks ago and now Safari is way too slow. I have tried using Airport and Ethernet and the problem is the same. Yesterday, I upgraded to Safari 5.1 and now the problem is worse. Any solutions?
I can't stand peremptory affirmations like "Nothing is wrong with Safari".
Thousands of users can't be wrong (see the discussions).
If I read you the right way, it's never software' fault, it's the user who's the culprit.
Amazing!
In this very case, the fact is we can't give to "christinefromfonthill" a good solution because weren't sitting in front of her Mac.
You give her a good advice which could, perhaps, lead to an improvement.
But must also admit that Safari is a very slow browser compared to Firefox or Chrome.
And you can't ignore all the problems which arose when upgrading to Lion and were related to the new build and specs of Safari 5.1.
The best example is the apparition of "garbage type" (use of Last Resort font) when reading numerous sites. This never occured before and is the direct consequence of Safari compliance to Web Open Type. This standard prohibits the use of Type 1 Postscript Fonts and is the reason why so many people are in trouble.
I use a Mac for more than 25 years.
I am a very "clean" user who hates the bells and whistles of third party.
My Mac is always up-to-date and despite all my Mac loving care, I run into some problems.
Imagine the nightmare which can occurs for the vulgum pecus who isn't, by definition, a power user aware of all the requirements for running a System in optimal conditions.
May be Safari is one step in advance on its time but lambda users are paying the price for it. -
Safari eats way too much memory. Can I curb its appetite?
This has been an evolving problem and I've solved it by moving to Chrome, but I enjoy using Safari, so I'm looking for a way to give Safari one last chance.
When I use Safari and open up Activity Monitor I can see three different processes for Safari: Safari, Safari Web Content, Flash Player (Safari Internet plug-in). If I have many windows open with lots of tabs -- something I often do -- then that Web Content will go to upwards of 2GB. If I leave the computer running all night, it will be on 3 to 4 GB when I go to use it in the morning. Needless to say, Safari is very slow when that happens.
Chrome has it's helper programs, too, but they never exceed 100MB of Real Memmory. That makes me wonder if something's not wrong with Safari that I can fix.
Thanks,Hi Linc, I know its a long time ago, but I came across your offer of scanning Steven's Terminal read out for a very slow Safari response .
Would you be willing to take a quick look at my readout as well ? (as I also am having similar problems) ( I have the latest updates for Safari and Mac OS)
Many Thanks in anticipation
Phil

Why doesn't my Safari open up in timely fashion, any time day or night? I get twirling circle most often and wait at least 30 to 60 seconds for lift off. Have checked internet connection which is fine. This jams up access to internet and entire workings of computer. I have tried downloading software, etc.
Should I ditch it? I think it is accessed through Mozilla but am not sure. I am at my wit's end. Even if I reboot, it makes no difference. Thanks, laurie.Hi and welcome...
You have a Mac Mini... please click My Settings and tell us which Mac OS X you are running. That will help us to assist you. Thanks!
Why doesn't my Safari open up in timely fashion, any time day or night?
Try here for troubleshooting Safari third party add-ons. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3230?viewlocale=en_US
Empty the Safari cache more often. From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Empty Cache.
If that doesn't make a difference, from your Safari menu bar click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons, click Reset.
Troubleshoot the Safari .plist file. Open a Finder window. Select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. It has a small house icon. Then open the Library folder then the Preferences folder. Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop. Now launch Safari. If Safari speeds up loading web pages, then move the .plist file to the Trash.
Check for Login Items Open System Preferences/Accounts then select the Login Items tab. Delete any files or apps you have listed there. And go to /Library/Startup Items. Move any files in the Startup Items folder to the Trash.
Open a Finder window select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. Then open the Library folder, then the Caches folder, then the com.apple.Safari folder. Move the cache.db file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash. Relaunch Safari.
And from your Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select Extensions. Turn Extensions OFF. See if that makes a difference.
If you are running v10.5.x (Leopard) make sure Safari is not running in Rosetta. Make sure Safari is not running in Rosetta. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle so it faces down. Where you see Open using Rosetta... make sure that is NOT selected.

Parental controls--turning off safari only way to control explicit content?
The password protected parental controls I think are a great idea especially when it come to viewing the web. However I have a few questions:
1. is turning safari off the only choice for controlling explicit content?
2. I understand turning off safari makes the safari icon disappear but if I turn off safari I would still like to be able to run website specific apps like Ebay--is that still possible?
4. Does anyone know if there are any SDK developers working on more robust internet filtering for the iphone?
5. Alternatively, can iphone's parental controls (or perhaps a SDK app) keep the user from deleting the browser history without the password so it can be monitored?my kids at age 7 are not allowed on the internet and I have to make a safe website list on my wifi router.
I know if they bring it to a friends house then its will be wide open and they are not allowed to do so yet.
I hope a kids safe app will be made or some parental controls to be made available soon

Blank white pages in Safari (until Firefox opens them)
Occasionally, pages will come up blank in Safari. (View source is also blank.) These are pages that have worked fine in the past, and they are simple HTML, with no JavaScript, etc. Refreshing and deleting history do not help.
What does help is opening the same page in Firefox (where it works fine), and then going back to refresh in Safari. It's almost as if Firefox has to show Safari the way...
Any ideas how to fix this? (I've seen other posts describing this problem, but no answers.)
Safari version: 2.0.2
Internet connection: Simple cable modem (no router)
Firewall: OS X with standard settings.

Please Help.
Thank You All.
ps: Sorry about my english.Hello Kakohernan,
I tried that link to access your crash report, but it's nor working properly.
Try this... if you haven't got another user account, create one. The reason for doing this... if you log into a different account, you might be able to use Safari that way.
Adding a new user account to your computer
You can create individual user accounts for each person who uses your computer. Each new user has a separate home folder and can adjust his or her own preferences without affecting other users.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Accounts.
If some settings are dimmed, click the lock icon and type an administrator name and password.
Click Add + and type the user's name.
If you don't want to use the short name generated automatically, type a new short name. (Once the account is created, you won't be able to change the short name.)
Type the user's password in the Password and Verify boxes.
Type a hint to help the user remember the password if they have trouble remembering it at login.
Click Parental Controls and select options to determine what the user can do with the computer.
If you change your mind while you're creating a new user account, click Delete - to cancel.
This way we'll know whether this issue effects the whole system, or just your home folder.
Post back...

Safari locks up when I try to open it, ultimatley will not open
When I click on the Safari icon in my dock, it shows Safari in the toolbar at the top of my screen, but it just shows the spinning beach ball with no safari window actually on my screen. I have to "force quit" the application in order to get out of it. What gives?
Hello,
Try a different user account and try to launch Safari that way.

Safari 5.1.2 browsing sessions become idle..
As of last week, my safari browser hasn't been working properly. For some strange reason the pages I visit seem to become idle for no apparent reason, especially if I spend a few minutes on a page simply browsing or writing a message. When I click to access a following page or opening a new page, I have to disconnect my wifi and reconnect. The pages then load like normal and browsing resumes, until I have to repeat this process again later down the line.
This is not only frustrating, but I am concerned because the same has been happening with other browsers like google chrome and firefox, which I tried out to see if they had the same problem. My wifi is working fine and has a very strong connection, so I don't know what the problem is... I must add that this all started happening, after my laptop had a bit of a knock. I hope nothing has been damaged inside to cause my current browsing problem. I hope someone can help. Having to constantly kickstart Safari this way is driving me mad!How much free space on the starup disk?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
And you may want to check the startup disk. It may need repairing.
Launch Disk Utility. That's located in /Applications/Utilities
Select the startup disk in the panel on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Select Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If the disk needs repairing, follow the instructions for Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks

Having recently updated to Lion, I am confronted with several annoyances in Safari. Considering how much — and how faithfully — I use Safari, these cannot stand!!! Please help me get old functionality back!
1.) Tabs now insert themselves left-to-right from their originating page. I prefer the old way, adding them to the end of the tab bar from the right. I am a big user of tabs and this is completely disrupting my workflow.
2.) Resume seems to be stuck on for my Safari. Although I disabled it in System Preferences > General, Safari opens up the previous page when I quit. Help me go back to the way it was where Quit meant Quit, and a new launch opens the home page.
3.) How can we get rid of Reading List in the bookmarks bar? I don't like that eyeglass icon taking up precious space. If I want to use this feature, I'll use the keyboard shortcut or menu item. Please tell me there's a way to remove the icon? (similarly, it's probably a good idea to remove the Top Sites or Bookmarks icon)
4.) Downloads folder as separate window. I prefer the way it used to be, where you could drag a link to a media file right onto the Downloads window, and you could show/hide it using a keyboard shortcut. Is there a shortcut to open the Downloads list? Is there a way to pop it out as a floating Window?
I'm sure I'll think of more, but for now please please help me run Safari the way I am used to!Not that it matters, but I've figured out the twisted logic in Tabs.
For any individual page, every tab you open will appear just next to the source (let's call it source A), but will spread in the traditional manner, with new ones appearing directly to the right. So all the tabs launched from source A will follow in the order which you opened them.
However, if you had another tab open during that time, let's call it source B, that tab is now way down the line. Here's a ghetto-*** diagram:
Before:
Source A - Source B
After:
Source A - Tab A1 - Tab A2 - Tab A3 - Tab A4 - Source B - Tab B1 - Tab B2
And I presume what we all want is the classic way:
Before:
Source A - Source B
After:
Source A - Source B - Tab A1 - Tab A2 - Tab A3 - Tab A4 - Tab B1 - Tab B2 -
Hi!
Is there a chance to configure Safari this way that the behavior is the same as on the iPhone or iPod touch? I do not mean the keyboard, but the mouse. So I want to scroll the web page when I press down the mouse button and move it (similar to the touch on the phone). On the desktop version of Safari it selects the text.
Is there a way to change this behavior?Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Safari 3.0.4 crashes after Safari Icon 2.7 mods
After unsuccessfully attempting to change the Brushed Metal appearance of Safari using Safari Icon v2.7 the browser keeps crashing upon launch.
I had changed the icons, but couldn't change the overall appearance. The settings to do that were faded. I poked around the preference docs for Safari Icon and got the idea (probably erroneously) that if I changed the Safari version number in Safari Icon's Nibs folder from 2.0.4 to 3.0.4 that would enable the appearance settings.
It did. So I changed the appearance to Aqua. And from that point on Safari kept crashing. I went back into the Nibs folder for Safari Icon and changed the browsers version number back to 2.0.4. Safari still keeps crashing.
I ran Onyx and Tech Tool Platinum, still keeps crashing but maybe hangs on 5-10 seconds longer than before the maintenance utilities were run.
I also trashed Safari Icon. Maybe that was an error on my part, but it's gone. Safari still keeps crashing upon launch.
Nothing else seems to be affected on my system.
I logged in as another user and Safari crashes for that user as well.
Do I reinstall from the installation disks? Is Safari necessary for anything critical? (I don't mean for browsing, as in benefits of Safari vs Camino vs et al. I mean for using Software Update, that sort of thing).
Here's a copy-and-paste of the most recent crash I dug out of the Crash logs:

Thank you for any assistance.Hi
by 'hosed' I meant corrupted, somethings been changed inside the application package that's causing this problem.
In theory, Sure, if the input managers were fine before, then likely it's nothing to do with them.... just an observation really, that you have a few installed, most of which operate on all user accounts.
I guess pacifist will have detailed instructions with it, dunno, ( other than you'd get the update, open it with Pacifist & choose the Safari application ) I never used it myself; but have a search on this forum. There have been some detailed posts on re-installing Safari this way.
Unpkg- you download the appropriate update for 10.4.11 ( intel or ppc processor, depending on what mac... ), I believe the Delta ( not combo) update contains the full Safari application, if you're trying to save bandwidth. Then you open the pkg with UnPkg - it'll create a folder on the desktop that contains every file that the update would install. Inside this, in the applications folder, you should see Safari. Trash your existing version, then copy the new one into the main Applications folder, then repair disk permissions via disk utility.
I don't know offhand if any security updates since 10.4.11 have modified Safari for Tiger ( there were some small changes for Leopard ) so, it's possible that any such updates will need re-applying.
I can't speedily find any info on your safari Icon changing application, but I'm assuming it changes just the Safari application package & no other files. If there's a possibility it modifies other things, I'd suggest you download the 'combo' updater mentioned above, since you might need it . -
What's wrong with my safari/chrome?!
Hi guys! Every time I am on safari or chrome, as I'm browsing, a new tab will open automatically saying "suspected malware" or "clean your mac now" or "install this." How do I get rid of it? I checked and I have no extensions. These are really annoying but I have to click on a hundred pop up messages from those websites to even click the tab. Sometimes it doesn't even let me and I have to quit safari completely. Safari is way worse than chrome, in terms of the ads. I appreciate any and all help!
Thank you in advance.
P.S. I have Macbook Air, and on OS X YosemiteYou may have installed one of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates
if it's not already checked. -
Why can't I log in to anything using Safari?
It's as if all my online accounts have been FROZEN by Safari; can't log into facebook, can't log OUT of youtube, can't log in to anything else. But if I'm using FireFox, I can log in-or-out of anything and it all works great; But let's face it, Safari is way, way cooler. It all started after I downloaded a facebook "menu bar" application from the Mac App Store. I have deleted all package contents and stopped all processes in the Activity monitor and restarted the comp. and all... now I'm stuck with "frozen" Safari. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?
Just discovered it! Go in to Safari Preferences. Click on Privacy and it probably has set "Block Cookies" to "Always" (Why I don't know!) which prevents you from logging in!
When I changed that I could Log in!
