Safari 6.0 external links bug

Hi,
I'm running ML 10.8.1 with all the updates. When I click on external links (eg: links in Mail), it opens safari, and navigates to the website in full screen mode. But, the Menu Bar, the Bookmarks Bar, and the Tabs bar are not accessible. Moving the cursor to the top of the screen does not show the Menu Bar, or the Tab Bar. The only way to get these back is to go back to another fullscreen App/Desktop, and then come back to Safari. This does not happen if a tab is already open in safari.

Can't confirm.  Consider a conflict with some Safari extension or with some third party software.

  • How do I configure safari to open external links in the existing window

The current version of Safari (8.02) always opens an external link (such as from Mail) in a new tab.  I would like to configure so that it loads the link in the existing open tab (window).  Is there a way to do that?  If so can some one tell me how to do that?

Linc:  I have seen that configuration page and none of those options allows you to configure Safari so that it will load an external link in an already open tab or window.  I have looked in two different reference books on OS X (Mavericks not Yosemite) and not found any relevant information in their discussions of Safari.

  • Safari Not Opening External Links

When I click on any external link, eg: from Mail, Dashboard, a link icon on my Desktop, etc, Safari comes to the front, but does not open the link. Also when I try to "Reopen All Windows From Last Session", after reopening it, nothing happens. If I have a window open, I can drag a link off my desktop, drop it on the window, and the link will open.
I have tried resetting the cache per this link:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8777756&#8777756
Also running Macjanitor, and repairing permissions. None of these worked. Any suggestions?

That worked, thank you so much. Although I am a bit embarrassed that I didn't think to do that in the first place.
I also want to explain what caused it, and what happened after I reopened safari. The problem started after I installed Verizon Access to use with Verizon's wireless broadband; it crashed Safari, but at the time I didn't notice any anomalies upon restarting Safari. It took a couple days to realize that Safari wasn't opening any external links.
When I went to the preferences folder to remove the safari preference, there were two: one was "com.apple.Safari.plist" and the other was "com.apple.Safari.plist.saved". I put them both on the Desktop and reopened Safari.
I don't have a Home Page selected, I prefer just a blank window when I open Safari, but it opened a Verizon page instead. So I went to Safari's Preferences and removed it. Restarted the browser, but it was back. It took a couple tries, but now Safari opens with an empty window again, and everything else is back to normal.
What's odd is that the Verizon page didn't show up as the home page until I removed the .plist files from the Library.

  • Clicking on External Link in Safari Opens New Tab

I think it has to do with one of the preferences I've set within Safari but I just can't put a finger on which one.
Basically, I reinstalled Yosemite 10.10.3 on my MacBook Pro 13" (Late 2013) about a week ago. And then I tinkered with Safari preferences.
Since then, whenever I click on an external link, for example, an email address, Safari opens a New Tab instead of launching my Mail app.
Not sure how to do undo this.

From the Mail menu bar, select
Mail ▹ Preferences... ▹ General ▹ Default email reader: Mail
If you don't use Mail, you may be able to set the preference in the mail client you do use.

  • External links from other apps do not start Safari

    Hello,
I've set Safari for Windows as my default browser, but when I click external links in other applications, my previous default browser is launched.
Any ideas as to what may be causing this issue?
    Thanks!

This problem just started for me today. (I've been using Safari for Windows at work since its very first beta release.) Coincidentally (?) I just installed Firefox 3.0rc1 today. I can switch default browsers between FireFox, Opera, and Internet Explorer 7 just fine, but setting the default to Safari doesn't stick whether I set the default from within Safari Preferences or from Control Panel Add/Remove Programs.

  • How to choose witch window will open external links when using multiple Firefox profiles at the same time?

I am using 2 firefox profiles at the same, one for working and another for reading news. I start them with "firefox -no-remote -P profilename", so there are 2 firefox processes running.
It works well, but when I click a link in an external app (like in Google Talk), the link is opened in the first firefox process I launched. I mean, if I ran the "news" firefox first, it will always open the external links.
Is it possible to change this behavior? I'd like all external windows to be opened in the "news" firefox, never in the "working". Of course I'll achieve that if I open it first, but if I first run the "news", then the "working", then I close the news for any reason, now links will always open in the "working" until I close it.
    I running linux (opensuse 11.3).

    '''traysh''',
Profiles '''''period''''' are "unsupported" by Mozilla. Profiles are "there" but the developers want no part of non-developers using them or fixing anything related to Profiles that has been suggested in a Bug report, or documenting much related to Profiles. Profiles as we know them now are going to disappear from Firefox in the near future, although no specific version number or date has been fixed for that to happen. It is up to us user's to share our experiences with Profiles with other user's. I'm a relative noob to Linux, and all my experience with running multiple Profiles and -no-remote is with Windows OS's.
    '''cor-el''',
So are you saying that on Linux external links will only open in the first Profile that was opened if multiple Profiles are running?
And that external links won't open a Profile that isn't already running - if any Profile is already running?
''I wish the differences between Windows and Linux as far as '''-no-remote''' and running multiple Profiles were better documented for "us" Linux noobs over at the MozillaZine KnowledgeBase - hint. Unless I am not looking hard enough in the MZ KB for that information....''

  • External link issues with FF7+

Hello, after updating to FF7 (and now 7.01) most external links (widgets, etc.) are not displaying. Such as the twitter and facebook widgets. They won't display. Also on twitter, the right column thumbnails of photos (twitpic, etc.) are not displaying. Is there a setting I need to activate or change? Or is this a bug in this version, as FF6 did not have this issue. Same widgets, too. Thanks!

If images are missing then check that you aren't blocking images from some domains.
*Check the permissions for the domain in the current tab in "Tools > Page Info > Permissions"
*Check that images are enabled: Tools > Options > Content: [X] Load images automatically
*Check the exceptions in "Tools > Options > Content: Load Images > Exceptions"
*Check the "Tools > Page Info > Media" tab for blocked images (scroll through all the images with the cursor Down key).
If an image in the list is grayed and there is a check-mark in the box "<i>Block Images from...</i>" then remove that mark to unblock the images from that domain.
Make sure that you do not block third-party images permissions.default.images
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Images_or_animations_do_not_load
There are also extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) and security software (firewall, anti-virus) that can block images.

  • Open external links in new window

I can't seem to make firefox open external links, e.g. links opened from other applications, in a new window. This is particularly troublesome on multiple desktops since a new tab may be opened in a firefox window on a desktop other than the active one.
This is no option in the preferences or in about:config that appears to affect this behaviour. It seems there used to be browser.links.open_external that was later removed.

This link will open in de inappbrowser:
    adobeDPS.dialogService.open('http://pubbly.nl')
This link will open in Safari:
    adobeDPS.dialogService.openExternal('http://pubbly.nl')
If you use jQuery you can do something like this:
// Each anchor tag will be opened in an external browser.
    $('a').each(function(){
         var url = $(this).attr('href');
         $(this).on('click', function(e){
              e.preventDefault();
              adobeDPS.dialogService.openExternal(url);
More explanation about the dialogService can be found here:

  • Change default behavior for opening external links

Is there a Robohelp setting I can change so that, by default, external links in WebHelp open in a new tab or browser?

    Hi there
Unfortunately there never has been to my knowledge.
You may wish to make the suggestion so a future version can have it. (Link is in my sig)
    Cheers... Rick

  • Clicking external links switches to Firefox but won't open

I use Thunderbird (31.1.2) on a Mac (OS X 10.9.4). I frequently need to proof e-mails that contain a number of links (for a digital marketing campaign). When I click a link in the e-mail, Firefox (32.0.3) opens or becomes active, and if I have NO other tabs, will open my link. But when I switch back to Thunderbird, and click a second link, Firefox will again become the active app but my link will NOT open.
Again, if I have NO open tabs, the first click always works, but no other clicked links will work beyond that.
If I switch to Safari as my default browser, everything works fine. So I'm forced to do that as a solution but I really don't like it.
    Any thoughts to help?

I have the same problem. The problem is intermittent. Sometimes external links open immediately, sometimes they don't. Sometimes if I try several times in succession, the link will eventually open. If I manually copy and paste the link into a new tab, it always works.
Firefox is set as my default browser and set to check such at startup. When external links fail to open, Firefox DOES activate and become the frontmost application. It just fails to create a new tab from the external link.
I am using Firefox 32.0.3 on MacOS 10.9.5. I believe this problem started with the update before last (the same one that created the failure of CMD-L to open a new window which has since been fixed.)

  • External Links Always Open in A New Non-Private Window

    I've filed the following bug.
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=856839
If you have a solution, please let me know.
    Thanks.

    Thanks again.
Copy and paste would be easier. :)
I don't understand why they can't add a setting allowing the user to choose in which mode to open external links.

  • Opening external links in the most recently used page

I'm having an issue where external links from Mail or elsewhere are always opening up in the oldest page, IE, the page that was opened first, rather than the most recently used page.
Normally, this isn't that big of a deal, except when the oldest page is minimized, and every time I open a new link, Safari open up that minimized page to load in a new tab.
Is there any way I can fix this?
    Thanks!

You can't COMPLETELY remove it, but you can reduce it to one (1) item. Under Preferences>Documents
1 is the minimum and 10 is the maximum. Hard coded, no way to expand or reduce these limits.
The ONLY other option is to disable the "welcome screen" altogether under Preferences>General

  • Opening external links!

is there a way to make Safari open links from other programs (such as Mail, iCal, or iChat) in a new tab by default? It drives me crazy to have more than one web browser window open at a time, plus, Firefox has the ability to open external links in a new tab built right into the preferences window. thanks

    Hi
you can easily force Safari to keep things in one window, unless you manually open a new one. This applies to external links too.
You quit Safari, open the Terminal app & enter
    +defaults write com.apple.safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs 1+
then hit enter & quit Terminal
google it so you're sure what this does... always a good idea when someone suggests a Terminal command.
Be nicer if it was a visible preference eh - I hope that may do what you need.

  • External links to sub projects cannot be displayed in new window

    Hi
my question is: while putting hyperlinks to external topics ,
the options where you choose to open the links in 'New window' or
'pop up window' becomes inactive. deos this mean I cannot open
external links in new windows or pop ups????

    Hi there Kathrin
I think you may be mistaken on this. Moments ago I tested to be certain. I have a CHM that successfully opens another CHM.
    I'm using Windows 7 64 bit.
    Cheers... Rick
