Safari 6 encrypted search bar causing problems

I don't care if my search is encrypted or not, but it seems that Safari cares. I think this is new. I don't remember it being encrypted before, but maybe that's because I hadn't paid attention before my problem developed. I'm using Safari 6.1.4 on a MBP and I don't particularly remember an update lately, but this problem is new, within the last week or maybe two weeks.
The problem: when I try to use Safari's address bar/ search bar to search for a term in quotation marks— "John Doe" for instance— because I want only search results with that name, not all the instances where John and Doe happen to be on the same page—Safari switches the search to the html, written out exactly like this, no kidding: "john doe" (and then helps me with my obviously awful spelling!) and I get search results involving not just any instance of john and any instance of doe—because they're not in quotation marks anymore!!—but also the word quote, so that I get results primarily involving quotations!!! where the words I searched for are on the page.
When I click on the little https symbol, thinking this is the problem and maybe I can turn off the encryption, the popup tells me that "Safari is using an encrypted connection to search.yahoo.com" (my preferred search engine). And doesn't offer me a way to stop this. I presume this is what's causing the problem, but again I'm not positive.
The only workaround is to go to Yahoo and re-do the search on the site instead of up above, which means that cute combined address bar/ search bar is now useless for exact searches (with the quotation marks).
Is this Apple trying to protect me from myself?
Can I tell Safari to relax about it and get it to go back to working properly?
Or is this a bug? A new "feature" I don't understand? Something else entirely?

From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.

    Those are all fine
Here is how to see RAM overloaded…
Reboot to see the system in it's default state.
Open TextEdit for the sake of it
Open Activity Monitor & Terminal from /Applications/Utilities.
    Select the Memory tab
In Terminal enter the following command
    memory_pressure -l critical
    # note that is a lowercase L
RAM usage will climb, compression will begin the VM will become way more than the system has installed.
Eventually the system will start swapping  (look for RED) - Watch the 'memory pressure' & 'Swap used' as this happens.
Try switching to TextEdit - the system is still coping !
Switch back to Terminal & hit ctrl+c to stop the process.
Watch the VM & memory pressure return to normal levels.
    This OS kicks 4ss !

  • I installed ios7 last week. The Safari screen is blank, and nothing works in the Search bar. Problems with facetime the previous day, but that is solved. What's up with Safari?

I installed ios7 on the iPad last week. Problems with factime, but solved with online support. Now the Safari screen is blank, and nothing works in the Search bar. What's up with that? All other Internet uses are working.

Hi, a too full hard drive can really mess things up.
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, , try to clear at least 10 GB of space & empty the trash, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • Safari's search bar overlaps website

The top of Safari (where the search bar, all the tabs and so on is) is overlapping the webpage I'm on. This sometimes goes over the website's header.
Here is a picture of the problem on Apple's website:
This is particularly annoying for websites with search bars like Facebook and Youtube...
How do I fix this issue?

Go step by step and test.
    1. Empty Caches
        Safari > Preference > Advanced
Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.
Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.
    2. Delete Cookies
Safari > Preferences > Privacy > Cookies and other website data:
        Click “Remove All Website Data”.
    3. Safari > Preferences > Extensions
Turn off Extensions if any and launch Safari again to test.
Turn on those one by one and test.

  • Disable Safari 4 search bar suggestions?

While I'm content with Safari 4 for the most part, the most annoying thing for me are the many suggestions that pop up every time I try to search for something in the search bar. Is there any way possible to disable those suggestions? They are of no use to me, especially since my search bar is sized very small.
If anyone can help shed some light on this, I'd appreciate it.

    HI,
For the time being you can enable Private Browsing. From the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Private Browsing...
After it's enabled, Safari won't save history or autofill information.
the most annoying thing for me are the many suggestions that pop up every time I try to search for something in the search bar.
You can provide feedback for Safari here.

  • Safari unified search bar problem

When I type in a search term in Safari's new unified space bar, the website I'm currently viewing is appended to the search.  This results in a bogus search.  For example, if I'm viewing the macdailynews.com website and type in a search, the search term becomes:
    iphone 5 review site:macdailynews.com
If I'm at appleinsider.com and type in a search it becomes:
does ios 6 work with ipad 1 site:appleinsider.com
Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Select Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ Extensions from the Safari menu bar. If any extensions are installed, disable them and test.

  • Bing redirect on the Safari Google Search Bar

When I open Safari and try to search something- anything- my page is redirected through 'search.install.mac' something like that. Its hard to read because it goes by so fast, but after the mac.installer, it takes me straight to a Bing search for the exact same thing I tried searching on Google. Please help me. This problem is extremely frustrating and I'm afraid that the problem could become larger. Thanks

You installed the "Genieo" scam product. There is an uninstaller, but as the developer is not trustworthy, you shouldn't rely on it. I suggest the tedious procedure below to disable Genieo.
Back up all data. You must know how to restore from a backup even if the system becomes unbootable. If you don't know that, stop here and ask for guidance.
Quit the Genieo application, if it's running. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /etc/launchd.conf
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
    from the contextual menu.
If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder may open with a file selected, or the file may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that it doesn't exist. If it does exist, it's a configuration file created or replaced by the Genieo installer. Any software installer that does this should be considered ipso facto malware. Move the file to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password.
IMPORTANT: If the launchd.conf file exists, you must move it to the Trash it before continuing. Otherwise the systemwill become unbootable. In that case, restore from your backup and start over. That's how badly Genieo has sabotaged your system.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Applications/Genieo.app
    /Applications/Uninstall Genieo.app
    /Library/Frameworks/GenieoExtra.framework
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.engine.plist
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client.plist
    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client
    /usr/lib/libgenkit.dylib
    /usr/lib/libimckit.dylib
    /usr/lib/libimckitsa.dylib
Again, some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file doesn't exist. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
Reboot. Your web browsers should now function normally, and you should be able to reset the home page and search engine. If not, stop here and post your results.
From the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including one called "Spigot" if it's present. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
The Genieo installer may also install the "Silverlight" web plugin from Microsoft. If you have no use for that plugin, you should remove it according to Microsoft's instructions. Don't remove it if you subscribe to "Netflix."
This procedure may leave a few files behind, but it should deactivate Genieo. Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install it. Chances are you got it from one of the Internet's open sewers such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again.
Finally, be forewarned that when Genieo is mentioned on this site, the developer sometimes shows up under the name "Genieo support." If that happens, don't believe anything he says, but feel free to tell him what you think of his scam.

    Hello & welcome aboard,
I think you do not have 10.4.11, at the Apple icon at top left, click on it & choose About this Mac, what OSX version is it?
In later Safari the Search bar is gone, but you can type a search in the URL bar, & for reasons unknown to me, any url there will be grayed out on the last part.

  • IPad 2 safari google search error

until recently when i try to search using safari google search bar, instead of the search result, i am shown with this error message
    We're sorry...
... but your computer or network may be sending automated queries. To protect our users, we can't process your request right now.
See Google Help for more information.
i have to clear cookie in the safari settings to get it work, but only for one search, after that the same error repeats.
    help please! thanks a lot.

It would be nice, rbi, if you actually tried the app prior to commenting.  This problem just showed up, just today. It has nothing to do with flash, it is the image search for google for crying out loud. It is some sort of change with google and it *****. Perhaps it is their way of forcing iPad users to use their crappy app. Great. Thanks. Another good experience ruined by the lame politics between corporations. I am sure that some idiot mid level executive is very proud of themselves right now.

  • 8.1.3 Caused Safari Search Bar Issue

I Upgraded to 8.1.3 this morning and now the Safari search bar has moved to the very top of my screen, merged with the battery and use information. This is making it very difficult to use Safari as it is almost impossible to click on the search bar to enter my information.
    Help!

Reset your device and check again afterwards...
First, close off *all* running apps:
Double-tapping the Home button will bring up the running apps icons along with an app screenshot "card" above the icon. Tap-drag the app's -card- (NOT the icon) up and off the screen.
    Reset your device:
    Device Reset (won't affect settings/data/music/apps/etc)
    1. Press and hold (& continue to hold) BOTH the Sleep/Wake button & the Home button.
    2. Continue to hold BOTH (ignoring any other messages that may show) until you see the Apple logo on the screen.
    3. Release BOTH buttons when you see the Apple logo and allow the device to boot normally.

  • Using search bar in itunes when not connected to internet causes problem

I just upgraded to the newest version of itunes and I haven't had this problem before, but when I use the search bar in itunes to find something in the library (when I'm off line)I get an error report to send. Does the new itunes require being online even to look up something in the library or a playlist?

I'm getting a similar problem, not the exact error message, but one telling me I need to connect to the internet to buy itunes, when I am connected, so I'll be interested in the answer to your question too

  • Possible Solution to Google Search Bar Not Working/Safari Not Loading Pages

    Hello Apple Forums,
I have recently encountered a possible solution to a problem with Safari. The one in which Safari fails to load any page associated with www.google.com. Especially the Google Search Bar—a feature I use frequently.
After browsing through the forums about the Google Search Bar issue, I took my knewly gained knowledge, and decided to do some diagnosing for myself.
This is what I have done so far to try and solve this issue:
Run Daily, Weekly, and Monthly Cron Scripts
    Cleared the following caches:
    System Local Computer Cache
    System VM (Swap) Files
    Curent User Cache
    Current User Icon Cache
    Internet Explorer Download Cache
    Page History
    Web Site Cache
    Temporary Files
    Safari Downloads List
    Form Values
    Page History
    Recent Searches
    Site Icons
    Web Site Cache
    User Cookies (used by Safari)
    Finder Recent Applications
    Recent Documents
    Recent Folders
    Recent Servers
    Recent Files of AppleWorks 6
    Disk Utility Disk Images
    Preview
    QuickTime Player Favorites/Recent
    REALbasic Projects
    TextEdit
    VideoLanClient
and Other caches of Acquisition Current Downloads
    Acquisition Recent Searches
    MSN Conversation History
    Vicomsoft FTP Client Icon Cache
All of the above runnings of Cron scripts and clearings of Caches were done using Mac Pilot version 1.1.5 (yes the one on the site is an updated version, but I have not downloaded it yet). If you decide to use this program to clear caches, I advise not clearing the Installer Receipts under the System section as Installer Receipts are used to correctly repair permissions. I do not clear Find File Indexes either, because I use the Find File feature quite frequently on my computer and I do not want to have it re-index files all the time (perhaps I'll do it every few months or so to refresh what I've got on the harddrive). Remember, all the information given in this paragraph is relative to Mac Pilot version 1.1.5.
In addition, I have also repaired permissions using Disk Utility 10.4.4 (v145.7) (make sure you restart your computer after you repair permissions). I have taken out items in /harddrive/library/StartUpItems as well as taking out items in /harddrive/library/Internet Plug-Ins and in /user/library/Internet Plug-Ins and in user/library/Caches (restart your computer after taking out or putting in items in these locations).
As of now, all the information mentioned above about trying to fix this problem have NOT worked.
What HAS WORKED for me was tinkering with my 3rd party firewall—Norton Personal Firewall Version 3.0 (48). Under the Protection Settings, I HAD Enable Active FTB support, Enable Stealth mode, Enable suspicious activity protection (with Deny outgoing suspicious traffic and Deny incoming suspicious traffic selected), Enable UDP Protection (with Protect outgoing UDP connections, Allow access to essential services, and Protect a range of UDP ports 1 through 1023 selected).
What I CHANGED in Protection Settings was DESELECT Enable suspicious activity protection (with Deny outgoing suspicious traffic and Deny incoming suspicious traffic DESELECTED). Upon deselecting that information the Google Search Bar feature in Safari WORKED practically instantaneously. Before hand, anything I inputted into Safari and after hitting Return on the keyboard just wound up hanging there.
Just to be sure, all tests were performed on:
IMac G4 800 Mhz SD Mac OSX 10.3.9 with ALL the latest Software Updates, Except Apple Remote Desktop Client version 1.2.4 and iPod Updater 2006-01-10
I have a cable internet connection with ISP Time Warner Cable (RoadRunner) using a SurfBoard SB4100 Cable Modem on an AirPort Extreme Base Station (Apple Base Station V5.6)
Interesting side note: I have a PowerBook G4 15" 1 Ghz Mac OSX 10.3.9 Laptop running on the same network (although it has an airport extreme card as opposed to the regular airport card in the iMac) with ALL the same latest Software Updates, Except iPod Updater 2006-01-10. The Apple Remote Desktop Client version 1.2.4 does not come up on Software Update on the Laptop and I can not find it on the harddrive using a name search in the Finder Find feature. It does not show up in Applications folder, so I do not know if it is on or active on the Laptop.
The LAPTOP IS ABLE TO USE ALL GOOGLE FEATURES without DESELECTING Enable suspicious activity protection (with Deny outgoing suspicious traffic and Deny incoming suspicious traffic DESELECTED). Why this is apparent I have not officially confirmed.
What I do know is that I have tried to Uninstall Norton Personal Firewall Version 3.0 (48) with the appropriate uninstaller but it FAILS during the uninstall (I wanted to uninstall and reinstall, it appears the program became corrupted). What I did to possibly circumvent this was to search for the phrase 'Personal Fire" using the Finder's Find feature (Search for items whose name contains 'Personal Fire') and deleted all the files that came up related to Norton Personal Firewall Version 3.0 (48). I then reinstalled Norton Personal Firewall Version 3.0 (48) since then, and it continues to have the problem with Enable suspicious activity protection (with Deny outgoing suspicious traffic and Deny incoming suspicious traffic selected).
    What I have not done:
    Updated Prebinding
    Run TechTool Pro version 4.1.2
    Install Combo OSX 10.3.9
Initialize HardDrive with complete reinstallation of OSX 10.3.9
    To Summarize Possible Solution
I've tried many possible solutions, what appears to work best as of now is to DESELECT Enable suspicious activity protection (making sure Deny outgoing suspicious traffic and Deny incoming suspicious traffic are deselected) under Protection Settings in Norton Personal Firewall Version 3.0 (48).
One could try deselecting something similar in any firewall application other than Norton Personal Firewall Version 3.0 (48), to see if it is suspicious activity settings in firewalls that cause the problem.
    Any comments/feedbacks are extremely welcome.
    Hope It Helps!

    Hello tr:
Welcome to Apple discussions and thank you for your very very thorough post.
Your instincts to delete anything named "Norton" were right on the mark. Norton software is POISON to Macs running OS X. An additional software firewall is, IMHO, completely unnecessary. Turn on the built-in firewall in OS X - it is robust. In fact, if it is already on, there may be a conflict.
Go to Symantec's web site and use the uninstaller you should find there to get rid of the Norton stuff. After you do that, do a "find" on Norton and Symantec to be sure it is all gone - the stuff hides everywhere.

  • Safari search bar haywire

When I type in the Google search bar, the browser keeps deleting what I've typed: I begin to type a word, Google starts showing the potential matches--and then the first letters of the word disappear and I have to start over.
This doesn't happen all the time but enough to be extremely frustrating. I can't tell if putting searches in quotes makes a difference.
I tried clearing the Safari cache, based on someone else's similar problem, but to no avail. What could be causing this?

    Hi,
First, go to Safari / Preferences - Security. Click: Show Cookies. Delete all Google cookies.
Login to Google. Then in the top right corner click Settings / Search Settings.
Scroll down.. on the left side you can disable Google Instant.
Quit Safari (Command + Q) then relaunch Safari.
