Safari 6 Keeps Spawning Tabs instead of new Windows...why

I click on a link that is supposed to spawn a NEW WINDOW, and I get a NEW TAB instead.   I don't want tabs.  How to stop?

u have to go into your preferences and change it. it is under tabs on 5.1.7 so look for some thing like that. and the lines states " open pages in tabs instead of windows" then u have a drop menu and click never.

  • Can I open dock folders in tabs instead of new windows?

    Hey, guys!
    I'm using OX 10.9 and in Finder Preferences I have "open folders in new tab instead of new window" box checked. However, when I click on "open in FInder" in a folder I have in my Dock, such as Dwonloads or Documents, it pops up in a new Finder window. In other words, I'm looking for the TotalFinder behaviour without using the app. Any help?
    Thank you all!

    Hi, John, welcome to Apple's user-to-user discussion forums.
    Does anyone here know of a way to open new windows without using command click in a tab?
    If you want links on a web page to open in a new tab, you need to command-click on them. This will work both for links set up to open in the same window and those set up to open in a new window. There is no setting in Preferences to make links on a web page automatically open in a new tab.
    There is a preference setting to open links from other programs, such as Mail, in a new tab. In Safari's Preferences, click on the General icon. Towards the bottom where it says "Open links from applications", check "in a new tab in the current window".

  • Force new tab, instead of new window

    Hi. Is there a way for Safari to force links that require new windows to open in a new tab instead? Is there something I can download or a hidden preferance?
    Thanks,

  • Safari 5 opens links in new tab instead of new window

    So how can I go back to "normal"? Tried with
    defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool false
    but Safari still opens them in a new tab.
    Thanks

    HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
    From the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Preferences and select Tabs from the Menu. Perhaps your settings changed after the update.
    Also, if you didn't repair disk permissions after the Safari 5 update, it would be beneficial to do that.
    Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Cant Get Links To Open In New Tab Instead Of New Window !!!!

    Alright I must be missing something. I have done the following:
    Safari -->
    Preferences -->
    GENERAL
    Open Links From Applications --> In New Tab (Selected)
    TABS
    All Boxes Are Checked
    Everytime I click on a link online the page opens in a new window. How can I get the links to open as a new tab within the window?
    Thank You

    I was thinking of switching over from Firefox myself but this minor annoyance is something I never had to deal with on FF and it may be enough to make me switch back. I'm a regular digg user and whenever I click on a story it opens up in a new window which is off-centre and not maximized and no matter how many times I fix it the next time I open a link its like that again. These are pretty basic functions of a browser so if Safari can't even handle these properly then there's no future in it for me. Also can't add different search engines to the built in search bar, lame.

  • Safari New Tabs vs. New Window

    when i use safari on any computer weather it be a Mac or a PC, Safari doesn't allow me to click on a link and it open in a new tab. I know that you can go into preferences/general tab, and at the bottom select open links in new tab or window. I've done that. Just the other day, on my friends "BRAND NEW" Mac Book, I tested it out the same way. When you click a link in any page Safari will only open it in a new window.. Why does it not open in new tabs? The only way I can get a new tab is by Ctrl T/Command T... or by using the display menu... Also, FYI, I do have the latest version of Safari and I did try it after I downloaded the Latest Upgrade.. I think this problem is everywhere and its because Apple has not found out about it..

    There is a downfall to the terminal-entry hack/mod... it forces everything into a new tab. Pop-up from a Web-App? get's it's own tab, not the small window the app was trying to open. Using an online video app which usually pops up a small window with the video? Now it gets it's own tab... :/
    It's annoying to not have links open to Tabs but also the 'hard coding' to force everything into a tab has it's drawbacks too.
    I agree: Apple should just have this feature. Even IE has had it for quite some time... although not set by Default when it first rolled-out. And of course Firefox has it.
    <rant>
    Side-comment: Love Apple stuff to no end after being a Windows admin for over 13 years... but wow sometimes it seems like Apple completely misses the basics. Like this crazy thing my original Palm Pilot in 1995 had... cut-and-paste... good thing the iPhone... just ... got... that. :/ And why can't I cut-and-paste a file? :/ And then of course why doesnt Safari let me open new links in Tabs?
    </rant>
    Any way to find a happy medium where Safari opens a link in a new window unless the link specifies the dimensions of the window to open and/or specifies a separate window?

  • My tabs just keep making themselves new windows, why?

    When I open a new tab and lets say I go on a website, my tab just makes itself a new window. I don't want the tab to make itself a new window and it can get really annoying PLEASE HELP ME!
    Thanks

    Make sure that you do not drag a tab slightly down in the browser window while clicking.
    Current Firefox versions have a feature called tear-off tabs.
    You can detach a tab from the current window and open it in a new window by dragging a tab in the browser window.
    You can also do this via the right-click context menu of a tab: Move to New Window
    You can drag that tab back to the tab bar in the original window to undo that detaching.

  • Firefox tabs keeps getting popped up into new windows?

    Please help me figure this out. It's so annoying at times, the I am not doing anything then the tab would suddenly popout to a new window. I don't mind dragging it back to the other window to rejoin the tabs but its getting really annoying especially when I'm doing something of importance.

    This tearing-off and detaching the tab to a new window can happen with you move the mouse a bit down while clicking the tab.
    You can try this extension:
    *Drag Tab as Shortcut: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/drag-tab-as-shortcut/

  • Feature Petition - Undock Tabs to a New Window

    As far as I know safari does not currently have this functionality:
    Can we please have the ability to open a current tab in a new window?
    Here is the situation. You're working in your one window, with two tabs. Suddenly you realize you have to type in an address that is shown on one tab, into a form on the other tab. You can't cut and paste as it's a web form. So you have to keep going back and forth, looking at one tab, then typing in the other. OR for any other reason you want to take what's in one tab, and put it into a new window. I personally have a multiple-monitor (3) setup for productivity, and I run into this issue multiple times a day.
    So lets here it guys. Up this post if this is a feature you'd like to see implemented into safari. If this is against forum policy, I'm sorry, please submit this in the suggestion box at cupertino. Thanks

    The correct place to put this would be Apple's feedback page:

  • Firefox sporadically moves my current tab to a new window.

    About 2-3 times per week, I'll be browsing with multiple tabs open, and Firefox will suddenly "close" my current tab and re-open it in a new window. I say "close" because the tab is not listed under "Recently Closed Tabs." Rather, Firefox seems to just move the tab to a new window.
    I thought maybe there was a keyboard shortcut for this that I was accidentally hitting, but I can't find what the shortcut for that would be. Did I just miss it?
    The site I'm visiting doesn't seem to matter, as it's happened with different sites, including my webmail service, Google, and Facebook. The number of tabs open doesn't seem to matter either, as it's happened with 50+ tabs and just now happened with 24 tabs (which is low for me).

    Firefox 3.5/6 versions have a feature called ''tear-off tabs''.

  • Want to open links in a new tab not a new window.

    When using a mouse I know I can middle click (wheel) and the web-link I am clicking will open in a new tab. I also know I can drag that link to the + sign on the tab bar and it will open. But while using the Keyboard only, when I want to open a webpage link in a new tab, it always opens in a new window, why?
    I noticed while searching in Mozilla Support that hitting any box opens in a new tab ( this is the effect I want) why does this not happen on other webpages?
    I may be answering my own question here but could it be the one 'NewsNow' website that is causing my problem?

    The setting in Tools > Options > Tabs: "New pages should be opened in": "a new tab/window" is for links that specify a target window for opening a link.
    The browser.link.open_newwindow pref only affects links that specify a target window.
    You can use the browser.link.open_newwindow pref to divert links that specify a target to the current tab or a new tab.
    The browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction pref allows to divert (onclick) JavaScript window.open() links.
    Links that do not specify a target always open in the current tab unless you override that with a middle-click or Ctrl (Mac: Cmd) left-click (new tab) or Shift left-click (new window).
    There are also extensions that have options how a link is opened, so you can check out the Add-ons website.

    Hello,
    ''jstavene wrote:''
    can find nothing under the tools menu for private browsing?
    Then it's not the same issue.
    If Firefox is set to '''Never remember history''', then you're in “permanent private browsing” mode, in which case the menu item ''Stop Private Browsing'' will be grayed out. Perhaps that's the case, and you don't find the menu item easy to see?
    * [[Settings for privacy, browsing history and do-not-track]]
    If that's not the case, then menu items can be hidden using the userChrome.css file. Check if it exists, and if it's there, rename it, then restart Firefox.
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/UserChrome.css
    In Firefox Nightly (what will become Firefox 20), per-window private browsing has been added, so the menu item under the Tools menu is gone. It's been replaced by New Private Window under the File menu. I don't suppose it's very likely that you're using such a cutting-edge test version of Firefox though.
    If that doesn't solve the problem, since it's a different issue, it would be best if you would ask a new question.

  • FF4 wont move a tab to a new window. The new window opens fine but the existing tab stays on the current window. What's wrong?

    I just upgraded to firefox 4. I'm using session manager extension.
    I have multiple tabs open in my firefox window and I want to move some tabs to a new window. I followed the support guide which tells how to do this, however, when I drag the tab off the current window, the new window gets opened as it should, but the tab I was trying to move stays in the current window and does not get moved to the new one. Any ideas what the problem is?
    Thanks

    Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
