Safari 6 loses ability to "go back" to previous pages

I just upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion and presumably to Safari 6.0 as well.
Under Snow Leopard and Safari 5.X it seemed that there were certain web pages that used to "pop up" in a new screen which I could then close and have my previous screen stil there.  Now, under Mountain Lion/Safari 6, that doesn't happen at all and, even worse, the back button for new screens "goes dim" and I cannot go back to my previous screen/page after I'm in a new page (only some websites).  I literally have to go back and start Safari 6.0 all over again (unless I go into History menu).
I've tried all sorts of settings adjustments but it appears that some functionality has been lost in the upgrade.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?  Any suggestions?

Try troubleshooting the Safari .plist  (preferences)
Quit Safari. Now open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here:
~/Library/Preferences
Click Go
Move the  com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari. If that made a difference, move the .plist file to the Trash. If not, move it back to the Preferences folder.
If that didn't help, one more time, Go > Go to Folder
Type this:     ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db.
Click Go
Move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit then relaunch Safari to test.

  • New page unexpectedly loses ability to go BACK to previous page after clicking on a link in page (not consistent), why?

    Firefox 4.0 Vista 32 bit
I will have a tab open, and click on a link, new page loads. The Back and Forward buttons do not work. Usually it shows in history (unless I opened too many pages before clicking on link). This has happened several times.
It is not consistent - one time I used search bar and opened a Yahoo search page - clicked on search link and when I wanted to go back to look at another search link from the previous page- page would not load (BACK button dead). I clinked search again, clicked on another link and that time it allowed me to return to the previous page???
I am about ready to go back to previous version.
    Thank you.

It's a good idea to try disabling Flash completely and see whether the problem continues. If it does, then my guess is incorrect. To test that, open this tab:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Plugins category
Here you can locate Shockwave Flash and use the Disable button. Keep this tab open for easy access when doing your test.
''If your test confirms that Flash is causing the problem,'' then the other thread has two suggested workarounds. The first is simple to understand (keep some Flash running at all times) but may be inconvenient to do all the time. The second is trickier because it requires editing a file in (or creating and then dragging a file into) a system folder. Fortunately you only need to do it once.

  • Why does my safari stops working every time I try to swipe back to previous page

My safari stops working every time I try to swipe (multitouch) back to previous page? There's no spinning beach ball or anything, but the page just stops responding altogether. If I close the non-responding page fast enough the other pages remain fine, but if I just leave the non-reponding page as it is the entire app become non-reponsive and need to be forced quite. I'm running OS X 10.9.1 on a late 2012 MacBook Pro Ret. Anyone having the same prob?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

I have two JSP pages first.jsp and second.jsp the user starts at first.jsp and clicks the submit button which then takes the user to second.jsp where the users information is saved in a database. I want to know how to go back to first.jsp from second.jsp after the users info has been saved? I have been able to get the previous pages url information put I don't know what to do with it. I know there is a jsp:forward but don't think this can help me. PLEASE someone help me I am stuck and need to move forward.

Why do you think that jsp:forward will not fit your requirement? An alternative is to use sendRedirect()

  • Safari 4.0.4 will suddenly reload previous page while I'm reading new page

I'll be happily reading down a column of text on a webpage and suddenly the browser will load the previous page as if I'd hit the back button.
    Any ideas?

I am having the same problem with my wireless mouse! It has been happening for months, since I bought my iMac in November. The mouse was, obviously, included with my purchase. I keep forgetting to complain about the problem, until today when this odd occurrence happened for the 500th time.
Sometimes, not always, a page I am reading will suddenly jump back a page when I reach for the mouse to slide it. I have not clicked anything, nor have I touched anything on the keyboard. It is random, and when it happens as I am composing text it is incredibly maddening! How do I make this stop? I have checked my setting and all are compatible.

  • Why do I keep getting this message when I try to go back to previous page? "object moved to here"

This is so annoying. I use ancestry.com a lot and after I look at a census or a person on ancestry.com, I try to use the back arrow to go back to the page I started on and the screen goes white and it says "object moved to here." The "here" is a link, but it doesn't work to get me back to the page I want. I have to use the back arrow several times and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, then I have to start ancestry all over again. This is so annoying!

This is likely an issue with the site and you'll have to contact them and ask them to fix it. But a link to a public page where this happens and lets us reproduce the problem might be helpful.

  • Scroll back to previous page not working in safari on my air since downloaded maverick - any suggestions

I dont seem to be able to go back in safari by using finger scrolling on trackpad on my air- I can on my imac but it wont work on the air. I know that other people have had a similar problem and have read the suggestions but I dont know how to empy cache and do the other things suggested. Can anyone tell me in plain english how to fix it please.

It's fine now. Originally, he went on Safari and clicked on one of his most visited sites and was unable to scroll. Then he went to Google and was able to get to the keyboard to do a search (I guess he couldn't do that with the scrolling issue). He also tried Yahoo and did a search for a news site he couldn't get to previously, went to the site and now everything is fine. For someone with PTSD (not me) this is like a life or death situation. For me, it's something I try to look into for resolve ASAP!!!

  • Safari loses ability to browse websites

I've been having browsing problems with Safari on my Mac recently.   It will work for awhile, then cannot see any websites at all.  Safari even tells me impossible things like "apple.com" is not responding.
I believe the problem is in my Verizon DSL service, because when I reset my modem, it solves the problem.   I don't even have to restart Safari.  But I'm having to do this many times a day.  Switching between ethernet and wireless connection to the modem does not help.
Verizon has made an outside physical repair to my nearest DSL "box".   They can find no other problem on my line or with my internet service speed, but then i can only talk to them when Safari is working.
Their only suggestion is to try another browser, so I'm about to download Chrome and see if it does any better.
I'm up to date with latest Apple software.
    Any fellow travelers?

Here is some diagnostic help to clarify where the problem could lie.  I'd change to have Google do your dns lookup.
apple > system preferences > network
Double click on network connection you are using.
    Pick the TCP/IP tab.
    You can use
harddrive > applications > utilities > network utility
    to diagnose the situation.
    You can ping google.com.
    Result:
    Ping has started ...

  • How do I get my Safari screen from 1/2 back to full page?

  • When I last up dated Firefox the forward and back arrows dissapeared. Now if I want to go back I have to go to History to get back to previous page. How do I get these forward and back arrows?

On MSN web sight there use to be forward and back arrows on the left hand upper side of page that let me go forward and back from page to page. Now the arrows are gone and I have to use the History or Bookmarks to move back and forth.
The arrows didn't reappear when I up dated to the new foxfire.

Click the Firefox button, go to Add-ons, then Plugins and disable the following:<br><br>
    * Fun Web Products Plugin<br><br>
    * My Web Search<br><br>
Both of these are adware/spyware and cause performance issues in Firefox.
Next, click the Extensions menu link (above Plugins where you are) and remove the "Ask Toolbar".
If the problem persists, please do the following:<br><br>
    #Click '''Help '''| '''Restart with Add-ons disabled'''.<br><br>
#In the next menu which appears, checkmark: "'''Reset toolbars and Controls'''".<br><br>
#Finally, click the button called "'''Make changes and restart'''".
Just in case you weren't aware of it, you can right click the Back or Forward buttons to get a list of sites visited. If you'd like to see the return of the arrow on the Back button, install this add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/backforward-dropmarker/
Last but not least, some of your plugins are seriously out of date which exposes your system to exploits. Please visit the [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/ Plugins Check] page and update where necessary.

  • Getting back the previous page

    Hello,
i'm using a tableview in which the user can sort and scroll etc.
The  user can show detail-information for a selected line. When he comes back from the "detail" page i want him to see exactly, what he saw before.
I cannot use a pop-up, as this is forbidden in our portal guidelines.
And the application should be statless.
    Anybody has an idea.
    Thanks in advance
    Edgar Hügle

    Hello,
Note down the value of prevselctedrowindex and firstvisiblerowcount into a variable and pass it to the details page or save it in a cookie and when u return to the tableview page, either read the value from the cookie or pass it back from the details page to the tableview page and assign it to the tableView properties.
    <htmlb:tableView id               = "tbv_team_members"
                           table            = "//model/pub_it_team_user"

  • I hate my new update.  All pages are printed too small for my aging eyes!  Yes I know how to do Command   but don't want to do this every time.  Also, more importantly, where is my Google search engine?  And why no easy way to click back to previous page?

Okay, as soon as I sent this I figured out where Google search is!

The desktop, the mail, all webpages.  I know there used to be a way to fix this in preferences but now cannot find it.
Also my home page will no longer open (BBC America).
I found the Safari Search option (should have been obvious!) But on other hand, do not understand why tool bar keeps disappearing - aah, just another of life's mysteries (until I figure it out!).

  • Two finger swipe to go back in Safari isn't the same as clicking on the "show the previous page"

I don't know if Apple knows about this, but swiping on the trackpad with two fingers to go back to the previous page isn't exactly the same as physically clicking on the arrow button on Safari to go back to the previous page.
This is an issue because sometimes when I use the swipe gesture to go back, the previous page stays blank. Nothing shows up. But when I use the arrow button on Safari to go back, this isn't an issue.
I'm sure a lot of people have identified this problem, but I'm not sure if this has been reported to Apple.
    Just like this:
This may be due to the webpage not being fully compatible with Safari, but at least if Apple makes the swipe function work the same way as clicking on the left arrow button, this problem would be gone?

It may not be just a trackpad issue ..
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
    Click:   Remove All Website Data
    Then delete the cache.
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If nothing above helped, troubleshoot Safari extensions.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.

  • Safari Suddenly Unable to Track Back

Sorry for my obvious lack of articulation around this subject, but I'm a pretty low-level user (mac, that is!!).
I've been checking out cds at my local library for ages. The process is pretty simple. You to their catalog screen, set it up for "cd on order" search and it takes you to a screen where you can flip through a lot of pages of new cds on order. Once you find one you want, you simply click on "place a hold" and it takes you to the next page which is a "submission" form. Then you enter your info, it takes you to a "location" screen (where you want the cd to go for pick-up). After the process is through, you simply hit "back" "back" and "back" and your back on the catalog page where you started.
The problem is that suddenly Safari can't track back to the catalog page and, in fact, is not even making a record of it in the history (which is probably the crux of the problem). Instead, it takes you back to the library homepage, where you again have to go through the process of selecting "cd on order" and then paging through until you get to the cd you just ordered and can then continue on in the process. A hassle, to say the least (there are often 65+ pages of cds on order at any given time). Since I've used Firefox to do this same procedure and it works just fine (always returning to the catalog page), I'm guessing that this is a Safari-specific issue. It all started with the OS upgrade.
My short-term fix is to just tab the new hold page and go through the process, then tab back to the catalog, which works fine, really. But I'd sure like to know why Safari suddenly can't track back to a page it has visited.
Sorry, long and not concise, I know, but I hope it leads to a fix at some point.

It's fine now. Originally, he went on Safari and clicked on one of his most visited sites and was unable to scroll. Then he went to Google and was able to get to the keyboard to do a search (I guess he couldn't do that with the scrolling issue).
