Safari 6 opens Mail when opening an XML file

Hi all,
I just upgraded to Mac OS 10.8 w/Safari 6. I used Safari to look at my podcast XML feed and make sure it was OK once in a while. Now, with 10.8, going to an XML file opens Mail with the error "no app associated with this type of file". Any idea how to get Safari to open XML files natively again? I'm using Firefox in the meantime which works fine, but I'd rather not have to use it. Thanks.

Select the item in Finder > Get Info > Open with > Choose App from drop-down menu. If you want all XML files to open with Safari, then click the "Change All" button underneath it.

I saved docs from a iMac to a flashdrive but when I plug the flashdrive into an iBookG4 and try to open the docs on the flashdrive, I get this message: Doc 2 cannot be opened. The required index.xml file is missing. Does this mean that I can't use the info on the flashdrive with the iBookG4 or can I do something to get the required index.xml file?
    Thanks

It appears if you write the document with newer version Pages and try to open it older version Pages.

  • When I try to open some very important files I ge a popup that says "Important"  couldn't be opened.  The required index.xml file is missing.

When I try to open some very important files I ge a popup that says "Important"  couldn't be opened.  The required index.xml file is missing.  What do I do to get this file open?

You are trying to open a Pages 5 file with Pages '09.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09 is in your Applications/iWork folder.

  • "ePub_Best_Practices_EN.pages" couldn't be opened. The required index.xml file is missing.

I've been trying to open the "ePub Best Practices” sample document located at Creating ePub files with Pages but every time I try to open it in Pages '09 4.1, I get the error "“ePub_Best_Practices_EN.pages” couldn’t be opened. The required index.xml file is missing."
Is the file from Apple's site corrupt? I see a bunch of people online have used it successfully, but I don't know when they downloaded it.  When I open the Zip file the only file inside is "ePub_Best_Practices_EN.pages" which does not open in Pages.
    Thank you!

    Hi Peter,
Could I get the Pages 2009 version as well?
I tried clicking on your name and looking for a way to e-mail you, but either it's no longer there or I'm missing something. What am I doing wrong? Or, is there another way to contact you w/o posting my e-mail address here?

  • How open and edit the coherence.xml file?

How can I open and edit the coherence.xml file?
I cannot find the coherence.xml file in the coherence.jar package.
    Thank you,
    June

If you are intent on changing the coherence.xml file, then you could use the JAR command (that comes with Java) to extract the coherence.xml file from coherence.jar and the later repackage the coherence.jar file using the udpated coherence.xml file, e.g.:
    C:\java\opt\coherence-331\lib>jar -xvf coherence.jar tangosol-coherence.xmlextracted: tangosol-coherence.xml>
Instead of using JAR, on Windows you can associate the .JAR, .WAR and .EAR extensions with WinZip and use it to access / modify the contents of JAR files.
However, the suggested approach is as follows, and does not include any changes to the tangosol.jar file:
The tangosol-coherence-override-dev.xml file can be found in the coherence.jar file. After editing this file (in this case to define a unique value for the port system-property value for the multicast listener), save the file and add it to the server's classpath. When the server is executed, the values in the tangosol-coherence-override-dev.xml file will override any corresponding settings in the tangosol-coherence.xml file.Peace,

  • How come I have to put in a keychain password every time safari or mail is opened? Is there a way I can disable it or save the password so it doesn't pop up every time?

How come I have to put in a keychain password every time safari or mail is opened? Is there a way I can disable it or save the password so it doesn't pop up every time? Also, I have my mail account set up from my Yahoo! account and every time I open mail, it asks for the password for my Yahoo! account. I have checked save this password to keychain and it persists on popping up repeatedly.

You don't want to disable keychain (if there's even a good way to do so), since it stores stuff like certificates and the such.  It's quite useful.
Anyways, Keychains>Preferences>First Aid.  Check Set Login Keychain as default.  When you login, it unlocks the keychain.
    That should help you.

How do I set-up Automator to open Mail when I start up Mac OS X? Provided that this is how I would do it.

    You don't need Automator.
Just add Mail to the login items in SystemPreferences>Accounts
    or
If Mail is on the Dock, Ctrl-click the icon and select 'Open at Login'

  • Can't open numbers documents, says index.xml file is missing?

can't open numbers documents, says index.xml file is missing

I came across this problem after upgrading to Mavericks.  Here's what I did to solve the problem:
Issue:  I began working on an existing spreadsheet.  After I saved it and tried to pull it up again later, I got the message "index.xml file is missing...".
Go to your dock and delete the icon for Numbers (mine still referred to the previous version of Numbers).
Go to Applications and drag the Numbers icon to the dock.  This icon now links to the new version of Numbers and  (hopefully)  your spreadsheet should work.

  • Safari crashes every time, so does mail when opening a mail

Hmm... as of today Safari (3.0.4) and mail (3.1) both crash every time.
Safari stays open with no webpage loaded, go to any website and crash. Mail also crashes when you open a mail. if you dont use the preview window then mail stays open but aside from deleting mail you cannot do a lot!
I can get safari to open a local pdf file but nothing on the net.
I have latest version of Leopard on a leopard-built macpro 8core. i have all latest software downloads on it. probably caused by last set of software updates id say - how do i check and remove last downloaded updates ?
Ive reported most crashes to Apple as each time generates a crash report.
Ive trashed prefs, ive checked permissions, ive repaired the HDD from a bootup system.
    Im a bit stuck now.
Firefox works fine - im using that now to write this post.
mail does seem to use same internal browser for reading mail and is very much linked to Safari, so i guess i will have to use another mail reader too.
    Any suggestions ?
I can post crash reports for Safari and or mail if anyone can shed light on this.
I just installed acrobat reader (after this problem) and that crashed at end of install (assuming when it started up).
I have no internet plugins for safari.

seems after downloading and installing 10.5.2 my issues are resolved.

  • Mail and Safari immediately crash when opened.  Says incorrect username for "null" mail account

Recently I cannot open Mail or Safari on my iPhone 4.  Safari won't open at all, Mail opens and then alerts me that I have an incorrect username or password for "null" account.  I cannot open any emails before it crashes.  I have done hard reset several times.

I've a similar problem with Apple's Pages on my iTouch. I contacted Apple Support and there's not much you can do about it either than restore, reset, or delete the app/account and redownload it or sign in again. I would say try restore. But first try to delete your email  account in Settings and adding it again.

  • Anyone having a problem with the latest number software. Docs do not open Invalid. The index .xml file is missing?

I have been having problems since updating to the latest version of Numbers.
When I try to open files I am getting an error.
"The document “'13 Tax Prep .numbers” is invalid.
    The index.xml file is missing."
Anyone else getting this message? Anyone know how to fix the issue?

    Jeff Shenk wrote:
Numbers 3.1 can recognize both the new files without the index.xml file and the old ones with it, which it imports to the new format.
Agreed on that part.  But take it a step further.  If Numbers 3.1 is asked to open an old document that is still in the old Numbers 2 format that relies on an index.xml file but Numbers 3.1 can't find the index.xml file (perhaps the document is corrupted) then how can Numbers 3.1 open the document and interpret it in order to convert it to the new format? My guess is that this a possible trigger for the 'index.xml missing' error message.
Interesting link here on the new document format.

  • HT1199 safari is unresponsive when opening web sights

i have a 2014  macbook pro retina, how do i resolve the problems of a slow Safari when opening web sights, i have no extensions, and have tried reseting and emptying the cache. I understand i cannot uninstall the Safari app and then reinstall it.  I do not want to un/reinstall OS mountain lion.

From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
    Click:   Remove All Website Data
Then delete the cache. (Seems to do a better job then job emptying the cache).
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If nothing above helped, try this DNS server.
Open System Preferences > Network > Advanced > DNS
    Click + and type:
    208.67.222.222
Click + again and do the same.
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

  • Finder doesn't seem to open automatically when I drag a file onto it in the dock

    I installed Mountain Lion yesterday.
When I drag a file onto the Finder icon in the dock, it no longer open the finder window automatically.
Is there a setting I can change to re-enable this in Mountain Lion
    Cheers

You can't do that. It doesn't work, so you have to drag to a window, not the icon
