Safari 6: unclickable links.

In Safari 6.0.3 (and Chrome, but not Firefox) links on some pages are unclickable. Sites include, oddly,  http://www.apple.com/support/, Another site is http://seattletimes.com/html/home/index.html. The links do open in new tabs or windows, they cannot be clicked to open in the same window. This behavior stops when the user agent is changed to Firefox or Internet Explorer through the Develop menu.
This sounds like a weird way Safari interprets CSS code on some pages.
Is this a known Safari (and Chrome) issue?
I cannot find a fix elsewhere. Hope to find a clue here.
Thanks.

A hint on slashdot.com led me to turn off javascript. That solved the unclickable link problem.

Safari will no longer open. It just goes back to my desktop.  When I right click on the safari icon in my dashboard it says it is open.  I was using firefox until I could find a fix for safari.  I made the mistake of changing my default search to firebox later for convenience and now I can't open my system preference or many safari or apple linked files. Some of my emails from trusted sites won't open and does the same thing.
I upgraded my original system from 10.4.11 to I believe 10.6. something about a year or so ago.  I thought about re installing my safari app but when I go to open anything connected to safari my screen goes back to the desktop.  I cant open any files that I have on my desktop that I set up through safari, like my banking program. Prior to changing system preference to safari default I was able to open those files and now I can't get into change it back.  Can you guide me through this?
    Thanks,

Try running the 10.6.8 combo update.
    10.6.8 Combo Updater
    System Preferences or Safari Preferences?
    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart the computer, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

  • Annoying window switch in Mail Using Safari's "Mail Link to This Page..."

Anyone else have the annoying problem where they use Safari's "Mail Link to This Page", and it opens a New Mail Composer Window, but then opens Mail's main window right over it, forcing you to switch back to the Composer window?
Only seems to happen when Mail has NOT been running. The main Mail window seems to be programmed to take centre stage when it's opened. Very annoying bug!!

I have Eudora as my default Mailer in Leopard and don't get that, jfyi.

  • Safari keeps opening links in new window instead of current

    Hi
I have an iMac, everytime I click on a web link in Safari it opens it in a new window instead of the current window. So after a few minutes internet browsing I have loads & loads of windows open!!!
I have the Safari preferences set to open in 'Same Page', but no joy.
    Can you help?
    Thanks

    Hi
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
The Safari Preference Tab panel pertains in part to opening links from outside of Safari, e.g. Mail, or for using a command key to create a new tab. Within Safari, if a link is coded to open another window, it will do just that unless a command key is used, regardless of what's selected in the Tab panel.
With that said, for complete control over tabs, install 3rd party add-on Glims. Once installed, you'll find Glims' preferences as a separate panel within Safari Preferences (you may have to click on the directional arrows at the end of the Preference Panels to access it). In the Tabs misc panel, select "open link in a new tab". That will accomplish what you want, i.e. opening a new tab when a link within Safari is coded to open a new window.
You'll also find a number of very useful features in the other Glims sub-preference panel enhancing Safari usefulness.

  • Safari's mail link and mail page options cause system wide hang

I am having a very odd and serious problem with mail/safari in the 10.4.6 update
When I select mail contents of this page or mail link to this page from the file menu and mail is NOT open it causes the entire system to hang and the only option is to reboot
I tried to mail a page when mail was open and I didn't have any trouble
I have seen several posts that are similar but don't involve safari's mail link issue
If someone knows of a more appropriate area please direct me there
    Thanks
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I usually don't use this feature with the Mail.app quit but it shouldn't make any difference.
As a test, I quit the Mail.app and used Mail Contents of This Page from Safari. The Mail.app launched without any problems and a new Mail.app message opened with the contents of the selected web page copied to the message.
As a first step, I suggest Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption for system troubleshooting procedures and when doing so, follow all steps/instructions in the order provided.
Did you check the hard drive for any directory problems with Disk First Aid repair via Disk Utility when booted from your Tiger install disc before installing the 10.4.6 update and did you quit all running applications before the install?

  • Safari broken image link question mark in a blue box icon

The url I get the safari broken image link question mark in a blue box icon most often is "apple.com/startpage/". There may be 10 or 12 of them. However, most apple.com pages have at least 1. In fact I am looking at 1 right now. I have emptied the cache. I do not wish to reset Safari because I do not want to reenter all of the passwords to various sites. Is there a simple answer?

    Hi Rex,
Who is your ISP and what addresses do you have set in the DNS section of your System Preferences -> Network preferences?
Have you tried logging into a different user account on your machine to see if that has the same problem? This will help us to know whether your problem is local to your account or system wide. If you don't have another account you can use System Preferences -> Accounts -> [+] to create a test one (and [-] to remove it if needed)
Also, do you use any third party internet software (Norton, Intego, etc.)?

  • Safari force reloads tabs, works slow, half opens webpages, unclickable links

I am running Safari Version 6.0.5 (8536.30.1) on OSX 10.8.5. Then out of a blue pages in Safari started loading eternally slow. Either the blue line over the webpage address would start running and freeze with a simple site site loading minutes, or a site would load actually more or less ok but after scrolling down:
    - many links would become unclickable as if there were any
    - the webpage would load, but after scrolling back and forth part of it would turn white and not scroll down any more, although it did show the whole page just moment ago
    - part of the page loads and other part is displaid as white space.
Resetting Safari, clearing Web site data and cookies, CleanMyMac-ing, all these to no avail. At some point playing around and trying to load different web sites in Safari I got the following message:
Webpages are not responding. To visit the selected webpage, all webpages in other tabs and windows must be force reloaded. Do you want to visit this page? Force reloading might lose information you've entered.
with CANCEL or VISIT PAGE to react. Clicking on either did not resolve the problem.
I have neither installed any software nor Safari extensions. Except maybe the most recent OSX update yesterday which was necessary for iTunes getting iRadio. Google, Opera, Firefox are all running perfectly just like Safari has been doing until today.
    Any idea what is wrong?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain iMacs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Why does Safari only open links in foreground?

Safari in a search engine is nearly worthless. Links open in new windows that come into the foreground. An option to open new window in background would be good; even better: tabs in iPad Safari.

FWIW, I wouldn't use safari due to it's security problems. Apple still hasn't fixed the holes in the mobile version of it's browser. http://money.cnn.com/2010/06/14/technology/attipadhack/

  • Using Safari on iPad Links Redirect

My ipad is fairly new, Dec 31. I didn't have any problems at first. I don't know if the problem is apps or internet. When I try to click on links in Safari, sometimes it redirects. Not every single time, but enough to be a big problem. I click on normal links like apple.com and it redirects to various websites. I came to the forum first, I read there was a problem on Snow Leopard/Mac same issue and there were some links provided that helped them, and should also help me, but I wanted to make sure I'm not the only one? The only apps I've gotten so far are free, which might be the problem, possibly malware or whatever kind of virus you would get after downloading. I believe the ipad/macs don't have viruses... sort of.... there could be some other issues: http://www.reedcorner.net/guides/macvirus/isitmalware.shtml - thanks Thomas A Reed for the link at this thread:http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12744200#12744200
I called my internet provider. They said it was not them and for me to call apple support. I called apple support (transferred three times) the technician said they hadn't heard of it before, put me on hold, then we discussed the thread I mentioned earlier. The first thing he had me do was go to Settings, Safari, clear cache, clear cookies (history too?). Then go back to General, Reset, and reset all settings. Then I was told to hold the home and off buttons at the same time until the apple appeared (let go) and it restarts. Got off the phone and he emails me a link to backup and restore, did that. Then I checked and it still had redirects.
I thought I'd remove apps, I deleted about half from my itunes, cleared cache etc and restarted, same redirect problems. So right now I'm debating on deleting the rest of my apps or changing the ip address, or simply calling apple back. I just tried two different link and it didn't redirect, but it did it last night, so it's not happening every time.

I did the restore as new, had to send it to apple to be repaired. Went through all of that and was told there was no issue. I just got it back and it appears to not be redirecting at all, so that's good. BUT to my disappointed my $40 screen protector was removed! I called to complain, to no avail. Very sad I will have to get another screen protector. As of right now I have that thin plastic sheet that it came in to protect it. I have kids, of course I need a really good screen protector. Kind of sad, although they did tell me not to send any accesories with the ipad, I did not, except for the screen protector because I didn't want it wasted and didn't think it would keep them from doing their diagnotics and testings. Thank you apple I do like your customer service and it was fast and friendly, that was my only gripe. So happy to have it back!

  • Spotlight Google search in Safari gives Google links in Cyrillic characters

It's bizarre, I know, but when I use Spotlight as a quick access to Google, the page comes up with the Google links (Web, Images, Groups etc. at the top; Cached, Similar pages after each entry) displayed in Cyrillic characters in a language I don't know, although the search results are in English, in Latin type. But when I navigate to Google, all the text comes out "normal" in English, in Latin type.
I presume this is somehow due to settings going astray but I can't find how to locate the settings to change them.
    (a) Does anyone know how this is happening?
    (b) Does anyone know how to fix it?
For the time being I just don't use the Spotlight Google search in Safari, but it would be a useful shortcut to be able to use it.
(Posted here on the premise that it is a Spotlight rather than a Safari problem, but also under Safari because it relates to that too.)

Try quitting Safari. Then select Safari in the Applications folder and Get Info. Deselect any Language you don't want. Close the Get Info window and reopen Safari to see if the problem is corrected. If not, you might try trashing the com.apple.Safari.plist file after quitting Safari.

  • Iphone safari open new link?

Hi, I wondering why all of a sudden when I open a new link in safari it opens a new window but it also replaces my current window so I have two windows open with the same website. For example when I searching on google news, I click on a news story and it opens a new page to the website and then the website also opens up on the current google news page. I wondering why this is happening?

    Hey Drusus,
The way the links are created will determine if they open in a new window or not.

  • Safari download ics link instead opening it in ical

when i click on a link which points to a ics-file safari downloads this file. i can open it and the event is imported in ical.
is there a way  to tell safari to open it with ical?
    the mime-type i am sending is "text/calendar".
firefox is able to send the ics file to ical.
i can use a webcal-link but then this is rather a subscription but this is not useful for a single event which i want to import in ical.

Quit Safari if it's running. Move the file
    Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
in your home folder to the Desktop. Test again. If downloading now works as expected, then that's where the problem lies. Otherwise, it's still somewhere in your Safari settings, but I wouldn't know where. You'd have to ask the "Speed Downloader" developer what to do next.

  • Does Safari have a link preview option?

As an example, I'm reading a blog that has a weblink, but it's been renamed and not the regular address. I'd like to be able to move the mouse pointer over the weblink and see a preview of where the link leads before clicking. Is there a setting within Safari that allows me to do this?
BTW, I don't know how to abbreviate and rename a link like I've referenced above. Can someone give me an idea of how one does this too?
    Thank you.

Is there a setting within Safari that allows me to do this?
Choose to show the Status Bar in the View menu and then hover the pointer over the link.
Can someone give me an idea of how one does this too?
When writing HTML by hand, use code such as:
