Safari 6 update buggy

Since this thing came out:
- the two-finger scroll function on my MBP doesn't work on some sites I use
- some sites don't load completely without hitting "Command-R"
- a site that I built with Wix is broken, but it's fine in 5.1.7

One source for a retail version of Tiger is TheNerds.net. Mac OS 9.2.2 does not come with Tiger, so you will have to install Classic after you install Tiger.

  • MacBook Pro screen flickers and freezes after Snow Leopard/Safari 5 updates

    Hi guys,
I have a silver 120GB 15-inch MacBook Pro from Summer 2007 with 3GB RAM and 25+GB free space which has recently begun to freeze irrecoverably. The first appearance of these symptoms seems to coincide with my installing the Snow Leopard 10.6.6 update via Software Update.
I'm not particularly well versed in computer technology, but will try to describe my problem as detailedly as possible.
    What happens is this:
    1. I start the computer as per usual, with only a couple of startup items. Everything's fine.
    2. I start working. Use a lot of Safari 5 for browsing websites, often with some kind of Flash or "Flash-type" content such as banner ads, videos, even full Flash designs. I may also have programs such as QuickTime, VLC or an image editor open, if not necessarily "actively" doing anything. Everything's still fine - I'm able to both browse websites and watch videos as usual.
    3. After a while of active working - say, 1-3 hours - I notice browsing websites gets a little choppy. Display features such as the file list view in Finder may or may not appear properly. The rotating wait cursor may or may not appear from time to time.
    4. Immediately after symptom no. 3, the next time I start to watch a video, either via Safari 5 (say for example something on DailyMotion.com) or a file via QuickTime, something goes wrong.
Following no. 4, one of three things invariably happen:
5a) The video freezes and the entire screen flickers from black to the screen view very quickly two or three times, after which the computer or screen appears to freeze. The cursor still moves, but nothing reacts to it - open windows become completely unresponsive, nor does the top or any other menu react in any way to clicking. The "menu row" of application items, which normally appears when I move the cursor to the very bottom of the screen, doesn't appear. Restarting "blindly" by pressing the Off-button once and pressing R doesn't work. I'm forced to do a hard reboot, after which the computer is once again fine until the next two hours of active working. This usually happens ONLY when I try to watch a video in Full Screen-mode.
5b) I notice the video freezing only just in time, and am able to pause it and "esc" out of Full Screen-mode, and the computer remains operational. However, as soon as I again try to play video in Full Screen-mode, everything described in 5a. happens.
5c) The video stops playing, and the screen reverts momentarily to pale blue before switching to the login screen. I login again with my details, and everything appears to be fine again until the next two hours of active working. The computer "starts up" a lot faster than with a hard reboot. This usually happens ONLY when I've tried to watch a video in its original size, i.e. when not in Full Screen-mode.
This happens 1-4 times a day, and it appears to depend directly on how much work I've been doing on the computer. The less I use it in the course of a day, the longer it takes until the next time it freezes.
So, in a way, I'm able to replicate this problem. 95% of the time the screen has frozen while watching or starting to watch (usually already when starting to watch) video footage, but it has also frozen a couple of times just switching between e.g. Safari 5 and an image editor or browsing a website with a Flash banner ad or embedded video content (which however hasn't necessarily been playing); today, the screen froze when I tried to open a website made entirely with Flash.
Although it could be just a coincidence, I believe this issue first appeared when I updated Snow Leopard to 10.6.6 via Software Update alongside some other pending updates, including as far as I recall one for Safari 5. The update process appeared to have gone well at the time, though, and was not interrupted in any way. I have never had this specific problem with the computer/screen before, though.
I've read a couple of threads here regarding very similar issues with newer MBP models than mine, in which it has been suggested that the fault may lie in a malfunctioning NVIDIA GeForce graphics card. Now I've had that replaced already once because my screen went unexpectedly completely blank after a forced reboot 1-2 years ago (I don't remember exactly), but according to my System Profiler info the card still a GeForce 8600M GT. Can it be failing again?
I've also had some kind of a RAM card failure once. As far as I understood it, one of the RAM cards had fried and was preventing the computer from starting up. I replaced the bad 1GB card with a new 2GB one and the problem was resolved. Before the computer died, there were also other symptoms, but they were not similar to these.
I'm also doing the Apple Hardware Test tomorrow. Any other suggestions, though, than the graphics card?
*Could this have to do with Flash or Safari 5?* Just hear me out. Even though my computer has frozen from watching a video in just QuickTime, Safari 5 has always been open in the background at the same time, and more likely than not with websites with "Flash" content open. And come to think of it, before I performed the Snow Leopard and Safari 5 updates, I used to have daily problems viewing Flash video in Safari 5, the video content either suddenly showing up as "Plug-in Failure" or crashing the browser; I've had both Safari 5 and the Safari 5 Flash plug-in "quit unexpectedly" countless times in the past, almost daily. Sometimes the "Plug-in Failure" could be fixed just by refreshing the browser view; at other times, Safari 5 would stop showing Flash content altogether - Flash banner ads (such as Google ads), YouTube and other Flash videos, everything - until I quit and restarted Safari 5. BUT - since the day I updated everything via Software Update, I don't remember this happening; it never gets to "Plug-in Failure" now. Could it be worth trying to use e.g. just Firefox for a while or is there something (e.g. Adobe Flash) that I could try reinstall? Or am I just clutching at straws here?
Thanks for reading this long, long post!

Do you have access to an Apple Store? If so, it may be worth making an appointment at the genius bar and having them run the test for the NVIDIA problem. Since your replacement logic board still has the NVIDIA GeForce 8600 M GT video chip, it could be starting to happen to your replacement logic board.
I also agree with all of CMCSK's suggestions. Freezing is often associated with hard drive problems. You might also want to run SMART Utility:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/smartutility.html
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. It will give you a very comprehensive view of the physical health of your hard drive. If you still have the original one from 2007, it's getting pretty long in the tooth and may be approaching the end of its average useful life of 3-5 years. I just recently had to replace my original 2007 Fujitsu drive.
If your drive is headed south, and is also too small, it may be time to upgrade to a larger and faster drive.
The software update probably didn't cause the problems, but it may have exposed problems that were already in existence.
    Good luck!

  • Safari 3 Update Leads to Tears and Bad Font

    what a day.
so i've updated my mac os x version 10.4.11, which included the new safari 3 update.
until i decided to do this, i would use safari and safari only because firefox and netscape had very hard to read fonts in them (also Very slow!!-on this machine), of which i've found you cannot change through preferences. well, the update to safari also changed its fonts to match the ones in firefox and netscape. it hurts my eyes/head to read and is extremely annoying. i decided to throw away safari, in hopes of downloading the old one, only to find that this isn't possible after you've completed the 10.4.11 update (see this post: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1241335&tstart=0 ).
sounds like it's going to be a matter of finding my disc before i can have safari again (i'm in the process of moving to a new home). although, i imagine that even after reloading safari i will still have this font issue. any ideas to why all my browsers have the same messed up font? it's almost like there is a gap within each individual letter. see here: http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee41/Lulu_Lagoon/Picture8.png
my @ symbols do not show up in this font either.

  • Two days ago my Safari was updated to 6.0 and now it won't open.

Two days ago my Safari was updated to 6.0 and now it won't open. Heasder says, "Safari quit unexpectedly."  Reinstalling OSX10 twice and then updating did not help. Apple support is unable to help.

Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last Safari crash for clues.
Or just have Console open when you try to open Safari.

im on 100mb fibre, and all sites work fone on other devices, just my iPad since upgrading
its loads the site slowly, displays about 3/4 of the page once loaded

  • It seems the safari 5 update broke firefox access to apple developer forums

I can't seem to access the "Apple Developer Forums" link on the page: http://developer.apple.com/iphone/index.action
I had been accessing this fine through firefox, but after I did the safari 5 update last night, it seems I can only use safari 5 to get access. Does anyone know what the story is?
I get a 404 I think because it can't find an error doc to handle the get issue:

    +The requested resource+

    Open System Preferences > Software
(You can open System Preferences by clicking the Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click System Preferences)
    Select the Scheduled Check tab.
    Click Check now
Click the lock icon bottom left corner of the window. Enter your admin password when prompted.
Now click the pop up menu next to:  Check for Updates
You can choose Daily, Weekly, or Monthly.
And if you want the updates downloaded automatically, check that box.
You can see which version of Safari is currently installed. From the Safari menu bar click Safari. From the drop down menu click About Safari. You'll see the version number there. The most recent version of Safari is 5.1.2 running on Lion v10.7.2

  • Every time I use safari, software update etc... spinning beachballs

When I try to use safari, software update, system prefs, calculator etc., basically all of the software included with Panther, I get a no response and that spinning beachball thing. Has anyone had this problem.
I ran /sbin/fsck -fy and I also did a disk verify/repair (permissions also) and I also did a system restore of the applications from my Panther disks.
Adobe, Macromedia, Explorer still work fine.
    Help... Please....

With that many fonts you need a font manager. Fontbook is made for casual users of fonts. It is not a professional font manager.
I use Font Reserve. Others swear by Suitcase.
If you are on a budget, completely backed up and want to experiment, try Linotype's FontExplorer. I have played with it but have not switched to it.
    http://www.linotype.com/fontexplorerX
It is a beta but free right now. Just don't let it manage your library or system fonts and you should be ok.

  • Safari 5 Update Fiasco

Absolutely no doubts about it, there is something terribly wrong with the Safari 5 update.
I've read a lot of posts here and most of the 'old timers' in the forum seem to be having very little, if any, problems with the Safari update. This leads most of them to conclude that the problems being experienced by the majority of unhappy posters are either the result of 1) user error or 2) hardware/software incompatibilities.
We can dispense with the 'user error' reason as inconsequential because an Apple free update is totally automatic and does not require user intervention for the application to be updated. This should be true of the Safari 5 update. Of course, there will be some who would manage to screw it up, but they would be few and a real minority.
That leaves hardware/software incompatibilities. There are a number of posters with obvious incompatible hardware and OS systems for whom Safari 5 would never work. They too are few. Then there are some cases where one can say might have incompatible plug ins or applications or documents or whatever. That's also probably true.
But that still leaves a lot of unhappy people that do not fall in those categories. Look at the number of posts, a great majority of them claiming some problem. At one point yesterday, for a brief period of time, I believe the Safari discussion section was so swamped with readers the server started kicking people out. They cannot all be visiting the forum to congratulate Apple on a great Safari update. They certainly could not all be suffering from hardware/software 'incompatibility'.
I, for one, should not have any 'incompatibility' problems, but I'm here reading forum posts. I have a brand new 27" iMac Intel i5 and the Safari update works well in it. But I also have a 15" Macbook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo that I got less than 2 weeks ago. I bought it used and the first thing I did was do a clean OS X install, upgrade to 10.6.3 and load iWork 09. I have exactly 2 documents in it and synced my emails with the iMac. No plug ins and no application different from the iMac.
Yet, the Safari update managed to crash the Macbook. After downloading the update, I clicked on restart and that was the end of that update. After waiting 30 minutes on the restart screen, I concluded that it was hung up. I did a hard power off and powered on again. I got to the Apple logo and it hung there. I waited for about an hour for the Macbook to come out of it, but nothing. I turned it off and waited a couple of hours before turning it on again. Still nothing.
At this point, I simply reinstalled the 10.6.3 upgrade, which also reinstalled Safari 4.0.4. I didn't lose any emails nor the 2 documents I had in the Macbook. I'm keeping Safari 4 on the Macbook for now.
My recommendation to everyone out there who has not done the update yet, if you're not prepared to do possible recovery work, DO NOT UPDATE TO SAFARI 5.
    Let Apple fix it first.

I agree - I don't do much with my iMac except emails and Quickbooks - and my Safari update has crashed or hung up so many times it is really disappointing. I always expected more than this from Apple. I guess I shouldn't have. Oh well...

  • App store, Safari, software updates, icloud, do not work in Mavericks 10.9 using a proxy server

App store, Safari, software updates, icloud, do not work in Mavericks 10.9. these problems are interrelated I am sure. Apple apps were working fine in 10.8.5 I could do software updates through a proxy server using password authentication. I reinstalled a new system 10.9 on another partition and it won't let me use Safari or update software using a proxy server. Firefox works fine (I am using it to post). I am very disappointed that this wasn not fully tested BEFORE releasing Mavericks. Any solutions would be greatly appreciated.

    I had this problem myself.
Checked the system log with Console, and I found the entry:-
Nov 11 11:16:41 teds-new-mac.ad.mycompany.co.uk ocspd[537]: Authentication challenge received for "10.203.39.212:8080", unable to obtain proxy server credential from System keychain.
For some unknown reason, Mavericks seems to be looking in the System keychain, when these credentials are actually held in the Login keychain.
So, I tried "Copy & Paste"  - copying the https user name & password from the Login keychain and pasting into the System keychain, which worked but it's not quite as straightforward as I initially thought.
Pasting into the System Keychain was, I found a not-very-intuitive process:
Having opened your Login Keychain, click once on the item to be copied and when it's highlighted, select "Copy" from the Edit menu or, of course, cmd+c.
Select the System Keychain:- DO NOT CLICK THE PADLOCK IN THE TOP LEFT TO UNLOCK IT.
From the Edit menu, select "Paste" or cmd+v.
You will then get a dialogue box,, enter your administrator's password and select "Modify Keychain" or just hit return, as it's the default entry.
I found a restart was in order before it recognised everything and would accept https pages without alert boxes, but YMMV.
Funnily enough - and this is where it seems counter-intuitive, if you do click on the padlock and unlock the System Keychain, "Paste" is greyed out in the Edit menu and cmd+v has no effect.
Exactly the opposite to what I'd expect..

  • Safari & Software Update Crash...

i don't know if the two are related... the crashing of Safari & Software Updater.
Safari crashes everytime it opens on my website that has an animated gif. It never did this before. i have had to change my start page so that Safari doesn't automatically crash every time it opens.
Software update has not worked in over two weeks... it get half way through, hangs, and then crashes. Is anyone else experiencing this?
i have had a long standing issue with the screensaver... which has yet to be answered as well. Even though i have it set to NEVER come on, the settings are ignored, and it comes on anyway. This has been the behavior of the OS since Jaguar. i am now using Tiger.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    thank you.

    Hi Carl,
For the sake of your sanity, do not install the Security Update (it is optional). No problem installing the 10.5.1 Update, as it was released about a month prior to the update, so it is not included in the 10.5.1 update. If you can't access 10.5.1 via Software update, you can access it here.
I would think this proxy crash issue along with a number of others are addressed in the coming 10.5.2 update. You can send the error report to Apple (using Firefox if necessary) via this page. Apple doesn't usually respond to these reports, however, the information can prove useful for Software Engineers working on OS X issues.
One other piece - it's not as simple as "rolling back Safari" as the Security Update affected OS X files. Hence, the need to reinstall 10.5, then upgrade to 10.5.1.

  • Safari 3 update does not load properly

After running the latest OSX update which included Safari 3 update. Safari opens to a blank page
(even though I've given it a home page address) and displays the message:
Safari 3.0.4 (v523.12) has not been tested with the plugin (null) (null) (v0.62). As a precaution, it has not been loaded. Please contact the plugin developer for further information.
Anybody know what that means? And how can I stop it from happening?

    IBod,
Thanks for the advice, you are a miracle worker.... or at least way more info filled than me.
My Safari loads properly now. What's puzzling is that I never downloaded or installed that software.
    Thanks again.

  • HT201541 How can I update Safari without updating the OS?

How can I update Safari without updating the OS? I presently have 10.7.5 and 1.6.1
I am getting too many notices that my browser is out of date...
    b
PS, a note to Apple. You use terms like Mountain Lion,  Yosemite, etc. But in other places you use
10.6, 11.7, etc. Could you be consistent? use one or the other, not both. Please. Or always use both together.

Shoot Apple, you don't make things easy. I don't want to upgrade OS as you now require an itunes account to get upgrades, and I'm against that. (until I have to).
So I switched to the chrome browser, that works.
PS, Ralph, yes, I can lookup the version numbers, but I have not felt the need to memorize them. My question is why does apple make it so difficult that we have to memorize the version number to name correspondence?

  • Mail, Safari, Software Update all quitting

Was previously having no problem with my Mac or any of these applications but since I installed SAFARI 3.1.1 THE FOLLOWING HAPPENS.
    1. When i try to open safari immediately a box appears telling me it has unexpectedly quit. No amount of retrying will open it.
    2. On trying to open MSN a box appears telling me it has unexpectedly quit. No amount of retrying will open it.
    3. When trying to open mail it will open for about 2 seconds, enough for me to see the mailboxes but when it tries to access and check for new mail it quits. Again no amount of retrying makes any difference.
I can check my .mac account using Firefox but what is really killing me here is that I cannot access my business pop account via mail.+ all the settings for my pop account are stored in an email, in mail, which I cannot open.
I have run Tech tool, Disk utility, checked file permissions, dumped the application preferences, reset the pram and all to no avail. Have Apple really messed up with this Safari update? Can it be causing problems in other applications which need to access servers over the internet as well? Really really need some help here. Why do I suspect Safari it is the only thing that has been installed on my machine for months apart from the recent firmware update.
Just have to add this now. Just tried opening "software update" and it quit as the others. Maddening!
Really really need some help here.
    Thanks
    Thanks

    OK
so now Dictionary is quitting as well, same as the others. Does it connect to the internet or share any components with Safari or Mail (spell checking?). I desperation I tried searching with Sherlock. Guess what? It quits as it tries to open.
Also just tried to update my entourage. The installer wont work either. Quits like the others
The list of broken applications now is is.
    Mail
    Safari
    Software Update
    iweb
    Garageband
    iMovie
    iPhoto
    .mac preferences
    Application installers
    Dictionary
    Sherlock
    Microsoft update
    MSN
I am tempted to go through all my applications (i checked a few!) and utilities and see how much of Apple's software is actually still working since I updated Safari.
This is desperate. Am I alone out there?
