Safari 8.0 Trouble

Almost every time that I click on a link, a new tab opens for some ad or unnecessary website (like mackeeper). I have tried restarting both the browser and my computer, but I still keep having the same problem, and it seems to be getting worse. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

You may have installed the "VSearch" trojan. Remove it as follows.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. These instructions are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Step 1
From the Safari menu bar, select
          Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot," "Trovi," or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Reset the home page and default search engine in all the browsers, if it was changed.
Step 2
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
/Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "com.vsearch.agent.plist" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
/Library/Application Support/VSearch
/System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
The problem may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the Internet criminal behind VSearch has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
          Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Safari 5.0 - Trouble playing flash video

So, I just got a new Core i7 Macbook Pro, and I'm trying to watch hulu or trailers full screen, and regardless of how low the resolution of the video, it's choppy and stutters when it's made full screen. When it plays embedded, it's just fine.
If I play the same video in Chrome fullscreen, smooth as silk. I'm not sure what to make of it.
Is there a fix, or is this a known issue, or do I have some sort of lemon Safari install? Is there a problem with the Flash Plugin?
I'm on the latest version of Flash Player, 10.1.53.64. I've uninstalled and re-installed Flash multiple times, I've repaired disk permissions multiple times. I'm running out of things I can think of.
    Any ideas?
Additionally, with flash content in Safari, sometimes Flash will 'crash' and my screen will get all garbled. It hangs around until I restart my computer, and affects functionality in Safari and Chrome, and it feels as if there's a general slowdown.

  • Safari bookmarks importing troubles

I'm experiencing a strange problem with Safari 5.1 I never had before. I'm trying to import bookmarks from the same verison of Safari (5.1) I have on other Mac but once I quit the Safari and open it again my imported  bookmarks dissapeared. The same is occuring when placing a new bookmark straight way from opened tab to Bookmarks bar. It is there untill the Safari is opened, once re-opened there is nothing left just bookmarks which were there when my OS was installed. Safari I'm running under Windows are OK as well as Safari I'm running on Mac Pro and iMac, I have this problem just on MacBook Pro 15". Does anybody have an idea what is wrong? I'm using macs for last 15 years and this is something new to me.

    On the MacBookPro...
Try troubleshooting the Safari .plist file.
Go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file to the Desktop.
Quit then relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, move the .plist file to the Trash.

  • Safari, proxy, vpn trouble

Last night I've upgraded my MacBook Pro to Mavericks, and now I'm fixing everything that's got broken.  Most curious is the way, that some web browser, like Safari connects to the http servers through proxy. It concerns only these browsers, that use systemwide proxy settings. Firefox and Opera, that have their own settings, work as usual.
I have a proxy server on my LAN which is set in my network system preferences. I also use various VPN PPTP and L2TP connections. Since the Mavericks upgrade, when there is a VPN connection open concerned browsers stop using proxy and connext to the Internet directly, or, I suppose, through the VPN connection. My VPN connctions are below Etherent and WiFi on Network Preferences service list pane, and their "Send all traffic over VPN connection" setting is set to off.
    Any suggestion?
    Wladyslaw

Create a new Network Location for use when you are using the VPN.
Then set your Company Proxy in the Network Location's Proxy field
System Preferences -> Network -> Location -> Edit Locations
Click on the Gear and select Duplicate for your normal Location.
Using that new Location -> Advanced -> Proxy
Fill in your company's proxy information.
Now you can switch locations using the Apple menu (upper left corner) -> Location -> select the desired location
Generally you need to switch to the new location Before making the VPN connection.
You could maybe write an AppleScript or an Automator Workflow to switch locations and initiate your VPN connection.

  • Is there a way to get out of using RSS in mail.app and go back to Safari?

    Hello,
I am a big RSS user and have a pretty huge and unwieldy subscription list. When Leopard shipped, I started using mail.app to read my RSS. I went so far as to delete all of my subscriptions from Safari and rely entirely on mail.app.
As some of you may have noticed from other threads in this forum, RSS in mail.app seems to be not ready for primetime. Specifically, if I leave mail.app open for more than about an hour, the RSS feeds stop updating entirely or update sporadically. It is at this time when I will also invariably find a Database.sqlite3 file in my trash can (which prevents the trash can from being emptied, too).
If I restart mail.app, the feeds start updating again BUT INCLUDE HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS OF OLD ITEMS. This happens every time I restart mail.app now. I have read all of the other threads that suggest that perhaps dot mac bookmark synching is to blame. This cannot be in my case since I have it all turned off and am not a dot mac member. I have no plugins installed in mail.app or safari.
I have come to the conclusion that RSS in mail.app is too buggy and unreliable to be used and I would like to go back to Safari. The trouble is that when Leopard shipped, the idea of RSS in mail.app made perfect sense to me and I got so enthusiastic and "there's no going back" that I deleted my enormous amount of RSS subscriptions in Safari. Is there anyway to export my RSS subscriptions from mail.app so that I can import them into Safari? I REALLY don't want to try and add them again one by one.

here is a link to macosxhints.com that tells you how to output all of your feed URLs to a terminal window. from there you can cut and paste them into your new feed reader of choice...
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080319094830396
and if you are in the marked for a new reader may i suggest David Watanabe's excellent NewsFire. he had just recently made it totally free as a gift to the macintosh community.
    best of luck.

  • Safari 1.3.2 shortcut not working for blank tabs - normal?

Just got my powerbook back from Apple with an "updated" OS X.3.9 and Safari 1.3.2. Trying things out before I zero the drive and reinstall everything back the way I had it (OS x.3.8 and Safari 1.2)
Trouble is the keyboard shortcut for cycling through tabs seems to be broken. I used to use CMD-SHIFT-Arrow Key to move left or right through tabs. Now it won't work except on tabs that already have pages loaded. If I land on a blank tab (like one of the dozen I open in advance as habit) it just dies and then I have to use the trackpad to select a new tab.
So, is that a new "feature" of Safari 1.3.2 or is mine broken? I don't like it.

    Thanks for the info, Tom.
I must admit great disappointment at this "improvement". CMD-Tab-Arrows worked 100% of the time in version 1.2. Now in 1.3.2 it doesn't.
For me, it makes infinitely more sense to leave my fingers on the arrows to cycle tabs because I'm already using them alone and with other modifier keys for scrolling up and down and left and right anyway. I'm less likely to mistake the arrows for other keys (remember I'm using a highly compact keyboard).
You're right this weird bracket key [ ] shortcut works even in blank tabs. However, it's definitely 1 strike against keeping the OS and Safari at the "updated" versions. Sigh.

  • Safari 5.1.2 hates PDF!

My old Safari loved PDF documents.
When I clicked on a pdf link - I could see it in Safari without any trouble or issue.
Now with the new update - Safari 5.1.2 - the monitor just go dark when I click on a pdf link.
And Safari will not aloud me to save it either.
But sure - Preview let me see my own PDF's - so I am not 100% out of order.
One step forward got me two step back - and they say the future is near...
ps. I am not into - do that, or go here - to fix it. Safari should do it without any more tricks then update - we are talking Apple - this is not Microsoft!

Select Help > "Installed Plug-ins" from the Safari menu bar. Besides the following, what plugins are listed?

    Java Applet Plug-in
    QuickTime Plug-in
    Shockwave Flash
    WebKit built-in PDF

  • How do I save .mov and audio files in QTX while using Safari?

I used to have QT7 Pro, which would allow me to save files directly with the plug-in with the drop-down menu at the right side of the player. With QTX, that panel is gone. How do I save stuff now from Safari’s windows or make 7 the default browser plug-in? Thanks in advance. Peace.

For most users just using a browser other than Safari solves the trouble.
When I encounter pages that don't show the Pro "pull down" (right end of the controller) I simply Control click on the video window to bring up the contextual menu.

  • Bonjour tab in safari does not show any Macs

    Hi there,
I have a lan and it has 4 macs, a printer and a tivo on it. (and a couple of other things as well)
When I open safari on a mac (any mac) the Bonjour bookmarks show ONLY the printer and the tivo, and NO macs.
I assume I should see the machine names of all active macs, and be taken to the website for their active accounts if I click on them.
Is that accurate? I assumed bonjour was to enable me see other macs on my net work but I can't. (iChat seems to work fine, as does iTunes for sharing) I'm only trying to find the webpages for the macs on my net via bonjour.
    Thanks,
    John Schank
P.S. I CAN see the machines if I use their net name in the safari address line...For example, typing foo.local in the address bar DOES take me to the default apache page for the foo machine. However, foo does NOT ever show up in the bonjour bookmarks of safari.

I'm troubled by these answers because they seem to further muddy the water.  Here's the important concept -
All links in the TEMPLATE file should be one of three kinds -
    1.  Relative to the template file, e.g.,
<a href="../ (meaning that you must go up one level from the template folder
to reach the root of the site, hence all other files, since none of them
should be in the templates folder)
    2.  Relative to the site root, e.g.,
<a href="/ (meaning that one would begin looking for the linked file at the
root of the site and follow the pathing from that point)
    3.  Absolute, e.g.,
<a href="http:// (meaning that the link is to a page external to the site).
Seems that none of the suggestions are putting you on that path first.

  • Does iPad Air 2 open PDF files in Safari?

Does iPad Air 2 open PDF files in Safari? Having trouble doing so.

As JimHdk stated, all iOS devices do a great job of opening standard PDFs right in Safari.  Note that it is possible for PDF authors to create non-standard PDFs in Adobe Acrobat that will NOT open in Safari but it would be unusual for those PDFs to be posted on a public web site.
Lastly, note that by doing a tap-and-hold on a link for PDF, you can choose to open the PDF in iBooks as well.  This is very helpful if you want to retain a local copy of the PDF on the iOS device for later reference.
What happens when you try to open the PDF in Safari?

  • Mac Digital Editions not Downloading eBooks through Safari

I recently had problem with Adobe Digital Editions not downloading files from the MyMediaMall library website. It had worked initially, but developed a fault probably to do with Safari. I could download limited titles from the Adobe sample book web page but nothing from the library's site. To fix the problem it was necessary to remove Digital Editions from my computer and reinstall it. To remove digital Editions completely it is necessary to do the following.
To completely delete Adobe Digital Editions from an iMac with Snow Leopard OS 10 locate delete the following folders and files:
    1. Under, /Documents/Digital Editions, drag the Digital Editions folder to the trash
    2. Locate, /Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/www.macromedia.com/bin/digitaleditions. Drag the digitaleditions1x5 folder to the Trash. Empty the Trash.
    3. Open the "Keychain" utility located in Applications/Utilities. In the left hand column under category click Passwords. Locate and click "Digital Editions" in the main window. Right click this file and click delete.
    4. With these files and folders deleted download and reinstall the Adobe Digital Editions software. It will be necessary to go through the authorization process again.
I hope this will save another Mac/Safari user some trouble in the future.

  • Safari won't play videos (or anything else for that matter)

    Hi folks,
I have a MacBook Pro running all the latest software and it seems that Safari's having trouble playing things, like videos. Nothing works: Flash, HTML5 or QuickTime. Tried it all. MP3s won't play in the browser either. I've looked around and many of the other people who have this problem have it magically disappear with an update, no such luck for me. Apple isn't going to be useful for less than $49 either. Anyone have any insight?
    Thanks!

    Hi...
MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.3)  < your profilel
I have a MacBook Pro running all the latest software
If your profile is correct, click the Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click Software Update. The most recent Lion version available is v10.7.4 and Safari 5.1.7
    For troubleshooting Flash.
    Quit Safari.
Open System Preferences > Flash Player then select the Storage tab. Click: Delete All
Now uninstall the Flash plugin then reinstall new >  Troubleshoot Flash Player | Mac OS
Launch Safari From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache
    Now try a video.
BTW... if you have the ClickToFlash extension installed, that can prevent Flash based video from streaming. It can also be installed as a plugin in /Library/Internet-Plug-Ins.
And check to see if Safari is running in 32 bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. If the box next to:  Open in 32 bit mode  is selected, deselect, quit then relaunch Safari.
Spend $49 for what? QuickTime is pre installed on your Mac. If you are using HTML5, that can prevent Flash content from streaming.
For QuickTime. Check Safari > Preferences > Extensions. If you have any installed, turn that OFF, quit then relaunch Safari. Try a QT video.
Not sure if this will work for recent versions of Safari for mp3, but won't hurt to try >  http://www.kalvster.com/macintosh/save-download-mp3-files-in-macintosh-safari.ht ml
