Safari always opens last site visited on previous session

Something changed that keeps Safari from opening, on startup, anything other than the last page I visited on the last browsing session. Neither loging out, nor rebooting, chanes this situation. I have looked through all available threads and have not found a similar occurance. If I had three windows open during the last session, all three widows pop up when I restart Safari. I have reset Safari, and have set the home plage to blank; nothing appears to work. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, peter

My version of Safari (2.0.4) does not appear to have that command option. It sounds like it would be exactly what I need to de-select, but I do not see it on the history drop down, or within preferences. strange.

  • Upon launch, Safari 6 opens last pages visited, not home page

I have recently upgraded to Mac OS 10.7.5 and Safari 6.0.2.  In Safari Preferences, I have set my home page, and I have set New windows open with Homepage and New tabs open with Homepage.  Nevertheless, and in contrast to the behavior of Safari 5, when I launch Safari for the first time each morning, it opens with all the tabs that were open when I shut it down the previous night.  Annoying!  (Especially because I had to log in to some of those pages, and when Safari launches afresh the login is no longer valid, so I get an error message.)  How do I get it to open a single tab with the homepage upon launch?

After I posted this question, Apple showed me similar posts, and I found the answer.  System Preferences -> General, uncheck the box for Restore windows when quitting and reopening apps.  This is a new feature of MacOS 10.7 of which I was unaware, and it applies to all programs, not just Safari.  Apple, please note: "reopening" is not hyphenated.  "Re" is a prefix, and, in English, pre-fixes remain un-hyphenated.

    Sorry. Ignore this post.

  • Safari always opens at the last web page viewed. How can I make google the default opening page?

On my iphone 4, safari always opens at the last page viewed. Does anyone know how I can set it to always open at google?

You can't but you can navigate to Google and add that to your homescreen as a shortcut.  Press the arrow on the bottom.

  • Safari always opens on a tab

I didn't use my computer for a few days. Now that I started using it again, I noticed that Safari always opens on a tab. I have Safari set up to open to a blank page and when I open Safari the blank page opens on a tab. I like tab browsing when opening links or browsing multiple pages, but if I'm only looking a one site, I don't want it to open on tab. I have looked in Safari's preferences and there is no way of removing this. Like I said, I don't want to disable tab browsing because it is useful when browsing multiple pages, but I don't want Safari to open on blank screen on a tab. Is anyone else experiencing this?
Thanks in advance for your help!
    P.S. I'm using Safari 3.1.2

So when you start Safari, you get the Tab bar automatically, right? If so, then you invoked that by accident. To get rid of it, press Command-Shift-T.

  • Safari always opens a linked file rather than download it.

Safari always opens a linked file rather than download it. Can't always Right Click for menu option as the web page is not setup that way.
Have tried trashing the Downloads.plist from the user library. Still no joy.
    Thanks anyone

    Hi guys
Thanks for suggestions. Carolyn, I did as you suggested but didn't solve problem. KeeChan, as explained in original post, that is my usual fallback but not all web sites work like that. Try downloading Safari - right click (Ctrl Click) on download button and all you get is the "Download.png" image.
I finally found the answer. A long time ago I had downloaded and used "SpeedDownload" and had deleted it. Somehow, some trace of the app was left behind and the mime association with dmg files was messed up.
You can not get rid of Speed Download by throwing its files away or by using an app cleaner product. You MUST run the Speed Download installer program and select the "uninstall" option to remove it.
My browsers now download dmg files correctly.

  • Insists on opening last page visited even tho it's supposed to open on home page.

This has been an ongoing, intermittent Firefox 4 problem w/two computers. I set homepage using general options tab but eventually something defaults to "open browser at last site visited," even tho command line stilll says "Show my home page." Between that problem and lost bookmarks, I'm ready to go back to 3.6 (again).

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
    * Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/sessionstore.js
If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.<br />
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note).

  • Firefox insists on opening last page visited even though it's supposed to open on home page.

My Firefox insists on opening last page visited even though it's supposed to open on home page.
Bad job guys, this is dumb, I am disappointed.
I've followed instructions found in the following links with no luck:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/833603
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1019367
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1018231
I deleted sessionstore.js it worked once but the issue re-occured afterwards. I don't have the file user.js.

Make sure that Firefox closes properly to prevent Session Restore from reopening those tabs.
Use "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit) to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox title bar.
You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files in the Firefox profile folder that store session data.

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost and you will have to recreate them (make a note or bookmark them if possible).
You can leave the sessionstore.bak file with the time stamp appended that Firefox creates automatically in case of updating.
There is software like Advanced SystemCare with its Surfing Protection feature that can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes.
If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

  • Since upgrading to Lion, Safari always opens to the last web page opened regardless of the preference settings.

Since the upgrade I cannot get Safari to open to the page selected in preferences.  I also find that all previously opened windows reopen when Safari is reopened.  How do I fix this?

Open General preferences and uncheck the option to "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps."
Applications will resume after restarts. If you wish you can change that behavior:
It's the Resume feature of Lion:
Managing Mac OS X Lion's application resume feature.
If you shutdown your computer you should get a dialog asking if you want applications to resume on the next startup. Simply uncheck the box to prevent that from occurring. Open General preferences and uncheck the option to Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps. You can also install a third-party utility to control resume features on individual applications: RestoreMeNot or Application State Cleaner.

  • Safari Always Opens the Same Two Pages.

First off, I'm running Lion on my computer. So every time I open Safari in the last month or so, it always opens up to the same two pages: Macrumors, and some Netflix movie page I looked at once. No matter how many times I close these two pages, navigate away from them, close them and start with a completely new window, when I quit Safari, it's always them that open up. It completely disregards what I had open before (its supposed to open up to the pages I was last on when I quit). I know its not because they are set to my homepage. I have facebook set as that, and I just checked, so it's not like these two somehow got in there. I don't know what the deal is here, but it's starting to bother me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Saved Application State/com.apple.Safari.savedState
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with an item selected. Quit the application if it's running. Move the selected item to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Relaunch the application and test. If there's no change, quit again and put the item you moved back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Otherwise, delete the item you moved.

  • Stop safari from opening last session in Yosemite

I've searched the web looking for an answer.
Just upgraded to Yosemite and have Safari 8 now on my Macbook Pro.
Everytime I open Safari, it opens my last session...I get some people like this, I do not.
I've seen that there’s now a separate preference for what Safari 8 should do on startup: open a new window or restore all windows from the previous session.
I can't seem to find the option in Safari preferences anymore.
I want Safari to open to my homepage....I shouldn't have to click the Shift button every time....plz help.

    Hi ..
    Open System Preferences > General
Select:   Close windows when quitting an app
Then restart your Mac to test.

  • Safari always opens up after boot on Mavericks

Hi, I'm having a problem with Safari opening all the time on Mavericks. tried all the basic ways of preventing this already. <making sure its turned off on the dock etc>. This all started up after Ghosting my old 250 gig HD on to a 1TB Drive. The page it always opens up on is rather random as I have never seen it before (luckily nothing dodgy looking) But its very annoying! The Software I used to copy my HD was S u p e r D u p e r - 100% sure its to blame!
Any help would be most appreciated !
    Thanks

If you are sure this software is to blame try removing it using App Cleaner, you find on the App Store, try this method instead of simply dragging the icon to the trash since this new method will delete other system files this application has created.
Go to Users and Groups, Select your user and in the Login Items make sure nothing is there (perhaps the itunes helper only). Uisng the minus sin located on the bottom delete any program on that list.

  • Safari Not Opening Certain Sites????

I am encountering some trouble with this new Safari set up. Most recent issue is, tried to open a site on my computer that worked yesterday. Contacted sites webmaster and they told me that Microsoft updated its internet browser and that if I don't have the correct settings on my brower, I will not be able to view the site. They told me to contact my ISP to have them walk me thru fixing the trouble. My ISP, verizon told me that this is not their issue but to contact Apple. I just want to know how I can view my website now? Firefox won't even work on it. It is just my work resume system and it does work at my office via a Microsoft Internet browser, just not with my Safari any more. I don't know what I need to do to fix this. Please help!

Yang, I appreciate the response. I tried your suggestion out and it didn't work. I keep getting this message:
The Web server you are attempting to reach has a list of IP addresses that are not allowed to access the Web site, and the IP address of your browsing computer is on this list.
Your IP address identifies your home network - or whatever network you are using to access the web. (That is, your home modem or router or your work modem or router.) This means that your location has been blocked from accessing this web site. I suppose this could be something automated by the web site you are trying to visit. It can also be done deliberately by the administrator of the web site. (Edit: One thought is that you might have been locked out due to having tried the wrong username and password too many times, or for some similar security issue.)
Trying to access the site via a different web browser isn't likely to change that, since it is your location ("your browsing computer") that is being blocked. The only thing you can do if that message is accurate is contact the IT people who manage your workplace's web site again, this time giving them that error message so they know that this is not a problem with your web browser or the Mac OS - it is a very specific problem due to your IP address being actively blocked by the server where the site is hosted.

  • Pages always open last document

After installing Lion, Pages always open with the last document I worked on.
I've been to System Preference / General and unchecked the box about this new feature.
But Pages still does it. And only Pages. Not Keynote, not Numbers.
I seriously don't know what to do about this.
I don't even have a Save Application State folder in the Library.

    Hello
May you edit your signature ?
It's often useful to know the system in use to answer questions.
Your signature claims OS X 10.6.6 but it appears that you run Lion.
