Safari and animated .gifs

Safari is causing my mac to beachball on pages that I frequent with animated gifs. here is an example...
http://www.sherdog.net/forums/f61/fedor-haters-unite-908608/
Any suggestions?

Yeah, me too here.
I Had to force-quit Safari 4.0 for the first time also, with the spinning pizza ball.
It loaded at first and hic-upped a little first then I just got the spinner.
That page is dangerous, some bad coding there, for sure.
I have been to many other pages, with flash and many with animated gif's and have had no problems what so ever.
And, Otherwise, the new Safari and that Java Release 9 has been behaving fine for me.
Others BEWARE !!!

  • Safari 4.0.X and Animated GIFs

I have a web site that makes use of animated GIFs that I've created with Adobe Photoshop (7 and more recently CS3). They worked fine when I viewed them with earlier versions of Safari, but not with Safari 4.0.X (i.e., any vers. 4 issued so far including 4.0.3). They either change after a long delay (60 sec. instead of designed 5 sec.) or not at all.
Other browsers seem not to have this problem, but I haven't tried them all.
In trying to solve this problem I've discovered some interesting things:
    1. When I create an HTML page using Dreamweaver on my desktop, add an animated GIF, and open it with Safari 4.0.X the GIF animates as designed,
    2. When I access a page from my web site the GIF doesn't animate as described above. However, if I close that page and access it again, the GIF animates, presumably because I'm viewing the cached page on my computer.
    3. Animated GIFs on other sites seem to work (maybe they didn't use Photoshop?).
    4. I sent a Bug Report to Apple on vers 4.0.1 but the problem is still there on 4.0.3
My question is why the different behavior in 1. and 2. above, and why hasn't Apple fixed this problem that seems to be newly created with vers. 4.0.X?

I think the main problem is that your gifs are massive. Animated gifs should be quite small, and not have more than 256 colours. Try resizing one as a test, say 25% of what it currently is and see if that changes anything.
If it doesn't, try making an animation on http://gifworks.com and uploading it to see if that's any faster.
As an aside, you don't need tables on each individual page - just 'center' your text and image. Tables are designed to be used for tabulated data, and create problems for people using screen readers if they aren't.
Also, you may want to remove the . in image and page title names, because those could cause you problems too. Renaming your pages and images so they reflect what's on them more accurately is good for search engines too.
Thanks for your reply, star-fish. I agree my animated GIFs are large, and my page design may not be optimum. However, when I access them with other browsers such as FireFox 3.5.2 and Internet Explorer 5.2, which I did just a few minutes ago, they begin animating in the designed 5 or 6 seconds instead of 50 to 60 secs or more with Safari 4.0.3. Also, they animated in the designed time with Safari 3. So, something is different about Safari 4.0.X, either intentionally or unintentionally.

  • OT - Safari and ani GIF images?

What would cause one not to do its thing in Safari 1.3.2?
Can you see the one here (if you have that version loaded)? -

I see it fine in 2.0.3, but in earlier versions, a revisit to

    doesn't animate the GIF.

Good point. The display none is there (in an embedded

    Hi Vlad
Have a look at the ""Example Programs Database ""
Reading from JPEG/PNG/BMP Images into a LabVIEW Picture Control.

This VI will give you a good example of how you can display a *.jpeg
    Hope that help.

  • Activation of links to embedded ".kmz" and "Animated GIF" files.

I recently upgraded from Adobe Acrobat Pro X to Adobe Acrobat  Pro XI and noticed a slight difference on how documents linked in an Adobe Acrobat File are activated for display.
I have placed files I want to display in my Adobe Acrobat file as file attachments.  I then link to those files, so that the user can click on an icon area within the document and open the file in a new window.
After a little effort, I was able to make the correct links to .pdf file attachments, but ran into problems linking to and displaying files that utilize external applications to view the file.  If I was able to convert this file to a .pdf file, I could open it with no problem.
However, I am having trouble linking the following file types for display from file attachments already embedded in the Adobe Acrobat document file.
They are...Portable Network Graphic (PNG), Animated Graphic Interchange Format (GIF), and Keyhole Mark-up Language - Zipped (.KMZ)  and Microsoft Word (PPT) files.
The .pdf file was originally convered from a Microsoft Word file in which all of the links worked fine.
I thought I had the problem solved in Adobe Acrobat Pro X, but cannot seem to open the same files iin Adobe Acrobat Pro XI.
    Would appreciate some guidance.

Thank you for your offer, I do appreciae it.  But I think the better question to ask at this point is :  What is the last version of Photoshop Elements that supports editing animated gif files.  This is too important to me to lose this ability and after checking further I see CS4 is out of my price and needed features range. I would rather hang on to my old laptop to manipulate photos than lose the ability to edit my .gif files.
Can anybody help with this question?

  • IWeb 09 and animated gifs

I am trying to add an animated gif to my web page that i made in iweb. no matter what, it seems to import the animated gif as a .mov and will not play when it is published to my server. is there anyway to stop this? i tried several different programs to make the animated gif (pixen, gifbuilder, giffun) but no matter what program it is made from it doesn't seem to function as an animated gif, it just converts to an mov.

  • CSS and animated GIFs?

I'm having a weird issue trying to implement this animated gif into this homepage. Why is my gif all wonky looking?
    Thanks,

Your Gif has artifacts in the workspace and GIF doesn't produce the nicest picture quality.
You might get better results with jQuery Cycle and an array of higher quality JPGS.

  • This is ridiculous... MAIL.APP AND ANIMATED GIFS

Receive an ANIMATED GIF - works fine.
Forward an ANIMATED GIF - it doesn't work
    UNTIL
You look at it again in the 'Sent Items' box - then it works fine. (THE RECIPIENT SEES IT WORKING FINE AS WELL)
OBVIOUSLY a bug. BUT - as embarrassed as I am that the issue pertains to such a heinous relic to the web, there MUST be a fix. I've scoured high and low - and not ONE SINGLE DIFINITIVE ANSWER. NOT ONE.

"When in the compose message view, do you really want a big blinky GIF in your face? The message composer is for writing the message, not for viewing it."
Sort of not the point. The issue is that if I RECEIVE a message with an animated GIF - and can see it in its full hidious glory - then I should be able to view it when I forward it to someone.
And whats more, if (God help me) I create an email with an animated GIF, then I should be able to see it in the body of the message - currently I only get the animation once its in the 'Sent' box.
"SO WHAT?" you ask. "BIG DEAL." you remark.
Well, lets say, for instance, that Mr. Ad Agency Exec A wants to send an animated gif that displays a current round of creative to Mr. Client Exec B.
Currently there is no way to view the animation before sending. You can see it if you have recieved it - AND - AFTER you send it, but not during!?!?!?!?!?

  • How to clear grey loading screen and animated gif (Dynamic Action with "Show Processing" on submit)

    APEX V4.2.3
    DB 11.2
I have a classic report on page 1.  I have a region button called "Export" (defined by a submit dynamic action with "show processing=Yes") that submits the page and then via a branch directs me to page 2 which has a slightly different version of the report on page 1 (i.e. no breaks) which I want to capture as a CSV export.  Therefore I've set the report template on page 2 to " Export:CSV".
Now when I click on the page 1 export button the grey screen and loading gif appears indicating that the report is executing and then as expected, page 2 doesn't appear but instead the standard open/save window's dialog box appears asking to open or save the generated CSV file.  All good..but the grey loading screen remains.  How do I clear this loading screen and get back to the context of page 1 ?
    thanks in advance
    PaulP

    Hi PPlatt,
We would love to help but you left out one crucial part of the puzzle: namely how does your CSV report get exported. With the way it is setup (a redirect to another page), I'm going to assume you do that because you have some PL/SQL on that page that prints the CSV.
Now there are two questions that are crucial here:
    - How do we stop the icon from bugging us on the screen
    - How do we communicate with the browser that it should no longer display the loading icon
The first question is rather easy, two simply lines of codes can do that:
    $('#apex_wait_popup').hide();
    $('#apex_wait_overlay').hide();
But when do we use this code? Quite simple when the document is downloaded. When is it downloaded? At the end of the PL/SQL code that prints the document to the browser.
    What you could do is at the end of that code give an application item a certain value. For example :AI_PRINTED := 'Y';
Then all you need to do is let the browser ask for the value. You could do this by using JavaScript to continuously fire AJAX to the server using a JS timing event:
    http://www.w3schools.com/js/js_timing.asp
Better would be a Server send event, but since you left out another crucial piece of information: your browser, I will not go deeper into this.
Start this timing event when someone asks for the document, and end it as soon as the process returns that :AI_PRINTED equals 'Y'.
Despite the lack of information, I hope I have given, or at least inspired you to get to the solution.
    Regards,
    Joni

  • Can I add animated GIFs to my project and Publish as HTML5?

I've created several projects with Adobe Captivate 7 and have added animated GIFs to my project. When I publish, the GIF animations are only animated when played as SWF. When I play the HTML5 version the GIFs only show the first frame.
Is there a way for me to publish my Adobe Captivate project so that the GIFs are animated when viewing the HTML5 output?

    HaridossR1234,
Thank you for your reply. I have tried both draging-and-dropping the animation into the project as well as using the insert-> Animation menu option, but neither result in and animated GIF being displayed when the project is on the web and being viewed as an HTML5.
I should note that the GIF IS animated when I view the project on my computer after publishing, but not when the project is displayed on my website. I publish the project with both GIF and SWF checked and Chrome displays the animated GIF but Firefox and Safari do not.
When you say to check the HTML5 output, do you mean when I'm publishing the project as a whole or is there that option somewhere when I'm inserting the GIF?
    Sincerely,
    Lillie

  • Animated GIF in JTabbedPane - repaint madness!

Loading and animated GIF into the icon for a JTabbedPAne just works, but it causes the paintComponent method on the main part of the panel to be called repeatedly. Anyway to distinguish between the two areas? The icon repaints automatically but I don't want to have to repaint the rest of the panel unnecessarily.

I've run into the same problem simon, the only way I came over this was to do my own animation for the gif. Bit of a bother really. Anyone have any other solutions?

  • Animated gif from InDesign CS5

I am trying to animate 4 pages (of text and graphics) so they appear 1 at a time in an never ending loop in InDesign so I can export and create and animated GIF for a web banner.
The only way I have managed to do it so far is to group the text and graphics on each page, copy pages 2, 3, 4 onto page 1. Layer them on top of each other, animate them to appear 1 at a time by delaying the timing a second for each.
But I can't get it to work as a loop. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

ziggy - have you found any more about it - its ridiculous that you can have pretty good animation presets and create great looking flash animations that than you can't do anything usefull with.
Bob - there are lots of other proper tools for this however i em not able to find preset animation palette in photoshop and i'd love to see how long will take you to animate words disapearing in a puff of smoke in photoshop. It took me 30 seconds in indesign. Also as i have poster, flyer, pull up banner design in indesign already with all fonts colours and style for the campaign why should i need to recreate the whole design in photoshop to make elements on the page fade, move and disapear in a puff of smoke?

  • Can't send animated .gif files

Hi - hope you can help. I have tried everything! I receive wonderful moving animations via email but when I go to forward them either to myself (to check) or to others, they are received as still pics, e.g. someone sent me a picture of a guy throwing a snow ball at the screen (quite impressive) via email. I forwarded it to others but it's just a picture of a guy holding a non moving snow ball. There must be something wrong with my .gif file - Can you help?? Thanks

Unfortunately 10.3's version of Mail does not handle sending out HTML, which is necessary for animated gifs. This is a weakness of this version of Mail because it can receive stuff in HTML, just not send it.
10.4 Tiger's Mail can set things in HTML, so you can add hotlinks and animated gifs to the email, but alas not with Panther's version, so for us it just appears as a still image in our emails. You would need to buy Tiger to get this facility.
Perhaps you could afford it with some of those mining royalties over there in WA

  • My animated gif keeps pausing in captivate and flash

Hi guys, thanks for your help.
I made an animated gif in Photoshop CS4 and inserted it as an animation into captivate 6. The animation works (I played it several times by opening it with internet explorer and safari). But when I open it in Captivate the animation goes black for a split second-several times, before it reappears-several times. It gives it almost a "reloading" or pause look when I play it. The same in flash, but in Adobe Flash CS4 Professional the timeline shows black dots once in a while, as you can see in the screen shot below.
See those black dots? I will insert a picture of what happens, when the player lands on one of those black dots:
It's the same animation, but only shows a little. Like I said, it plays fine when I open it with an internet browser, it plays fine when I play it in photoshop, but it just won't work with flash or captivate.
Any thoughts? Thanks so much!! I really appreciate your help guys!
    Nat

No problem. Building a simple animation in Flash isn't that bad. You could save each "frame" as an image from PhotoShop and then import these into Flash and place one frame at the time on a keyframe in the flash timeline (press F6 to insert a keyframe).
If you want your animation to loop then you don't have to do anything as this is the default behavior. If you want it to stop at the last frame you insert a command in ActionScript to stop it. Select the last keyframe and hit F9 and type stop() in the ActionScript window.
    Good luck!
