Safari and Camino!
Both Safari and Camino 'hang' when loading a new page or link and also when first opening either. It takes at least 30 seconds to open and usually I have to stop loading and start again. I have done all the things suggested for other people but with no improvement. I installed Camino because of problems with Safari and now am wondering if IE would be better?
I have had my G5 since June and have very little on the HD. Advice would be appreciated please but in language suited to an old lady! Thanks.
Hi Brenda
Many people are reporting problems with the Airport wireless card inside, and it often seems to drop the connection periodically.
Check the number of dark blue bars in Internet Connect in the Applications folder (or black vs grey curved lines on the menu bar if you've checked the box "Show Airport status in bar" in Internet Connect). If there are none, then it could be such a problem. Often turning the Airport Card on and off, fixes it, and it usually solves itself.
If you have good signal strength, then the problem will be with your Internet Service Provider.
In fact, far from there being a new version of IE, from 31st January 2006 it is no longer available for download at all, From the MS Mac site
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/
Quote:
"INTERNET EXPLORER FOR MAC NO LONGER AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD
In June 2003, the Microsoft Macintosh Business Unit announced that Internet Explorer for Mac would undergo no further development, and support would cease in 2005. In accordance with published support lifecycle policies, Microsoft ended support for Internet Explorer for Mac on December 31st, 2005, and is not providing any further security or performance updates.
Accordingly, as of January 31st, 2006, Internet Explorer for the Mac is no longer available for download from Microsoft. It is recommended that Macintosh users migrate to more recent web browsing technologies such as Apple's Safari."
However the last version released 5.2.3 works quite I believe. I use 5.2.2 okay on the odd occasion when a site doesn't like Safari.
I am having hanging times myself since upgrading to 10.4.5, but that was today, and it might just be my connection tonight...

Safari and Camino -- lighter text
Can someone confirm something strange I'm seeing? If I go to the NYTimes homepage in Safari and Camino, the one in Camino has text that looks a lot lighter than that in Safari. Clicking on an article results in text that looks dark, as it does in Safari. Just curious. Both are still set to default to Times 16, so I'm wondering why Camino renders much lighter.
I don't get it. I have another question. A site I visited allows Safari to click on links, but Camino only allowed certain links.

Safari (and Camino) crash on pages that are Flash-heavy
Hi there,
Recently, both Safari and Camino have crashed when they've gone to pages with Flash intensive pages. Some times it crashes right away (15-30 seconds), other times it can crash after about 25-30 minutes, but it always crashes.
I have made sure everything has been updated (Flash 9,0,20,0), I have repaired disk permissions (off the start-up disk) and cleared caches, but to no avail.
I have listed the latest Safari crash report. Since it is also happening in Camino, I am reasonably sure there is some sort of conflict between Flash and my MacBook.
Please feel free to respond as I will answer any additional question you may have to help me solve this problem. Thank you.

MacBook Mac OS X (10.4.8) 512M RAM; 80G HD; 2.0 GHZ processorHi again Wildcat,
Well, I decided to go to the main page (www.xgenstudios.com). It tuns out that the front page doesn't show up at all, even when all of the boxes checked off. (I checked on Camino and the front page showed up). The ads show up, but nothing else.
This is seems Normal, all items that make up the web page in Safari are deselected.
•Macromedia seems to be the problem not Java nor Javascript.
With only the Plugins Disabled in the Security tab in Safari preferences leaving the Java checked, go to the page, does it crash Safari.?
• For comparison the web page does not crash either of my Safari versions 1.3.2 or 2.0.4 on the two ppc or the intel http://www.xgenstudios.com/play/motherload/
BTW - If I uncheck the Java Script box, the page doesn't show up.
That is also normal it is coded using javascript language ( & java) it has 20 odd errors, nothing to write home about, not a problem, same will happen to many website including this one. Motherload Validation report if the box are all deselected

You say,
9,0,20,0 (I even deleted it and reinstalled it...still crashes).
I see that your crash tells this is the version you are running.
com.macromedia.Flash Player.plugin 9.0.0 (1.0.4f20)
• You need to to USE the uninstaller, is that what you did?
• Was that before or after you FIRST posted or after.
• Did you follow these exact steps from, a must to follow them exactly.
Steps for troubleshooting quoted from MacromediaFlash Player Tech Note
"If you have trouble with installation of Flash Player 9 for Intel-based Macs, then follow these troubleshooting steps. If one step does not correct the problem, then move onto the next step. For optimal troubleshooting, after each step, restart your machine, and Test Adobe Flash Player before moving onto the next step.
1) Verify the installed version of Flash Player
• If the installed version is 9.0.20.0, then you have the Flash Player 9 final release installed.
• If the installed version is 8.0.17.0, or 8.0.27.0, then you have the Flash Player 8 preview release installed. Download and install the final release version of Flash Player 9 available here.
• If the installed version is 8.0.22.0, or 8.0.24.0, and you are not running Safari in Rosetta mode, then you have the PowerPC version of Flash Player 8 installed. You can only run this version in Rosetta mode. You can follow the steps below to run Flash Player 8 in Rosetta, or download and install the final release version of Flash Player 9 available here.
2) Reinstall
Many issues are related to a problem with a previous installation of Flash Player or to browser configuration.
To reinstall Flash Player, first run the Flash Player Uninstaller. Then download and run the Flash Player 9 installer available here..............more here where this is quoted from. Flash Player TechNote
• Before Uninstalling & reinstalling the Flash Player.
• Try disconnecting All Third party peripherals from your computer USB items Printers, mp3 players & mouse and keyboard only try Safari
Connecting them back, ONE at a time, trying Safari as you go, see is it crashes.
Good luck! please keep us posted.

Safari and Camino both hang on specific sites
Hi all
I'm trying to help my girlfriend out with a problem on her computer. Just today, Safari stopped loading the NYTimes home page. It gets most of the way through loading the site, then hangs with a spinning beach ball. Thinking it might be browser related, I got her on to Camino, but it fails the same way. No crash, just a hang.
I read several other posts here that seemed related, and have so far tried:
1) Renaming the hard drive, and restarting Safari
2) Uninstalling and reinstalling Flash
3) Repairing permissions
4) Trying a 'new' account (I actually just logged in as Guest, figured that was enough)
and Safari still does not open successfully. It also fails on Youtube, People, etc, so does seem like a Flash problem.
This is on a 13" Macbook Duo, running 10.6.4. On my computer, a 15" Macbook Pro also running 10.6.4, both Safari and Camino work fine on the same pages.
Her machine worked fine as of yesterday, and there's been no updates to the machine since then. Any ideas on what to check?
ThanksThanks for the tips. Sadly that did not solve the problem.
I deleted cache.db. There was nothing in the ~/Library/* directories referred to by that link. The /Library/Internet Plug-ins folder had two things that were non-Flash and non-Quicktime related in there, one was a Shockwave file and the other was Microsoft Silverlight. I followed the instructions to uninstall Silverlight given at Microsoft's website.
After all that, Safari still hangs with the beachball at the NYTimes website and others. I noticed another post that recommended using Activity Monitor to sample the process, the output is below. Any other things to try?
Sampling process 4520 for 3 seconds with 1 millisecond of run time between samples
Sampling completed, processing symbols...
Analysis of sampling Safari (pid 4520) every 1 millisecond

Using Safari and Camino browsers
Hi Discussions! I read an article in Mac 10 discussions and the person answering said they use Camino browser instead of Safari. How does that work? Do you download and only use Camino and delete Safari or do you keep both and only use one at a time? Sorry for such a sily question but I find it confusing.
Hi Diane
All browsers are just internet access applications. You don't need to use one exclusively, as you can have several on your computer in Applications and just use the one you feel works best. You can even have two browsers open at the same time.
No question is silly if you don;t know the answer. This is what we are here for.
As well as Camino, another popular alternative to Safari is Firefox. Any of these browsers can be downloaded from their respective web sites, just make sure the download is a version suitable for 10.3.9.
So have a play with different browsers. Everyone has their own favourite.

Safari and Camino crash when trying to pring.
I have been having a problem with my web browsers crashing whenever I try to print. If I have a site open that I want to print (web reciepts) and if I click the link that prints the browser crashes, if I go to file>print the browser crashes. I don't even get to the print window. Anyone have any ideas what is going on?

Safari and Other Browsers Not Working in one account
The account that I use mostly, a standard account, has suddenly lost all web browser function, and I'm not aware of having changed anything recently.
When I try using Safari in the Admin Account it works fine (except for some reason I can't login to my .mac account either, I'm posting this from yet another standard account, which works fine as well). I've tried switching the standard account with the issue to an admin, but get the same results.
The results are that Safari (and any other browser) says it cannot find the server of the website I'm looking for.
I've also tried unplugging our router and plugging it back in to restart it without success.
Has anyone encountered this issue before?Ok, I have not tried that yet, but before I do, I have a newly discovered wrinkle for you-
I have found that I can browse in the bad account with Safari and Camino (and I suppose anything else), but only if I am going to "secure" pages, that is pages that begin with "https" rather than "http".
Incidentally, thanks for the help on the previous post. That may be what I eventually try.
Does this new detail shed any light on the problem? -
For several weeks, I've found that some sites with Flash will
crash OmniWeb, Safari, and Camino. The applications don't quit, but
they do freeze with the spinning pinwheel. I have cleared the
caches and history for each with no change.
The first site that I noticed this on was
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/index,
but I've since found the same behavior on other sites.
The problem is the same on two different computers: 1.
PowerMac G4 dual 450 MHz, 1GB of RAM, plenty of disk space, running
10.4.11. 2. Mac Pro dual 2.8 Gz, 2 GB of RAM, plenty of disk space,
running 10.5.2, fresh install.
I've attached a sample of what was happening in OmniWeb at
the time of crash, taken using Activity Monitor.Upon further investigation, it appears to be a JavaScript
calling Flash Player that's the problem. In OmniWeb, using
site-specific preferences, I was able to turn off JavaScript for
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/index.
Loading the site no longer crashes OW; if I turn off JavaScript in
Safari, it also loads the site.
I have run into other sites that cause the same problem,
however, so this solution will continue to be hit or miss.
I don't know whether there is anything that Adobe can do to
solve this problem, but some investigation would be helpful.
Thanks. -
Both Safari 4.1 and Camino 2.0.3 browser issues
Hi,
I have issues with both of the browsers I have installed on my powerbook G4 17" laptop.
Safari takes 10-12 minutes for the home-page to load. After it loads, I can surf properly again but then after 5-30 minutes of surfing, I get the spinning beach ball. If I wait (5-10 minutes) for something to happen, I get the window with the message stating that safari crashed and asks if I want to reopen or close the application. The only other way to close safari immediately is to force quit. This problem has been happening for about 1-2 months.
Camino opens normally, in terms of speed, but I almost immediately get the spinning beach ball. Again, if I wait 5-10 minutes, the application closes and I get the same window as I get with safari quitting. I also use force quit to close camino. This problem has also been happening for about 1-2 months.
My internet comes from a high-speed connection hard wired into a windows pc which is also connected to an apple airport extreme which provides our wi-fi. The windows pc also has the pc version of safari and it starts up immediately and doesn't crash like my mac laptop's safari. My laptop runs off of the airport extreme's wi-fi signal, but there are no problems with the wi-fi because there are 2 iphone 3GSs and one ipod touch also running off the same wi-fi and there are no issues using the mobile safari at all. So the problem must be with my mac laptop....
Thanks for any suggestions.
HERE IS WHAT I HAVE

Sudden Motion Sensor:

Version: 1.0
System Software Overview:
System Version: Mac OS X 10.4.11 (8S165)
Kernel Version: Darwin 8.11.0
Boot Volume: Macintosh HD
Computer Name: Tim’s PowerBook G4 17"
User Name: Tim (tim)Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
I FOLLOWED these instructions then restarted my machine. No effect.
If third party add-ons aren't the issue, From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 7 buttons and click Reset. Relaunch Safari. If still takes a long time to load your home page...
I FOLLOWED these instructions then restarted my machine. No effect.
Repair Disk Permissions.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
I FOLLOWED these instructions then restarted my machine. No effect. (I knew about this feature in disk utility from using final cut pro on my mac, so use it regularly).
Try logging into another user account. Try Safari functions as it should there then at least the problem is isolated to your user account only.
I FOLLOWED these instructions then restarted my machine and this one WORKED!! I now log into the new account and safari starts up immediately like before. I'm not sure what's wrong with my old account, but this tip worked well.
Try troubleshooting the Safari .plist file. Go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari and see if that makes a difference. If not, move the .plist file back to the Preferences folder. If Safari functions as it should, move that .plist file to the Trash.
If nothing above helps, please post a crash log.
Open a Finder window. From the Menu Bar click Go / Go to Folder. Copy/paste this path into the Finder dialog: ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter
Click Go. The Finder will open containing the crash log. Copy and paste the most recent log here in your reply.
Note. For help with Camino, check out their forums here. http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=12
Carolyn
Thanks so much to both of you for your help.

I've followed the on-site directions for this migration ("migrate from another browser") but my only options via that route are Safari and Chrome.
Export bookmarks from camino using the instructions at http://caminobrowser.org/documentation/bookmarks/#export .
Then import the html file into firefox using the instructions in the [[Import Bookmarks from a HTML file]] article.
Does that fix the problem? -
Safari and yahoo mail not getting along
Safari and Yahoo Mail don't seem to be getting along this past month
Hi powerbook1701!
It is a shame...Yahoo has always been bad with Safari...I think most people here keep a copy of Firefox/Camino for cases like this when webdesigners don't make their pages compatible with Safari. It's not much of a problem anymore but there are still a few sites depending on where you surf...
Actually the reason I started using Mail is because the standard Yahoo mail wouldn't display custom fonts, etc. on Mac. At that time not even with Firefox for Windows. But I'm glad that I switched because I enjoy using Mail much more that Yahoo's webmail which by the way was never good at searching...
Oops this sounds like Yahoo bashing!!! It's not meant to be...just letting you know other people have the same issues you're experiencing...

Safari and Flash does not work correctly. I always have problems accessing flash sites, like this:
http://globosat.globo.com/telecine/servicos/programacao.asp
There is a blank rectangle below the flash menu, I can't see the content correctly.
I think Apple must work with Macromedia to give us a better internet experience...Hi xPixel,
You can't click anything on menu (there is a flash animation floating around the window)
image: http://img44.imageshack.us/my.php?image=imagem20ox.jpg
URL: http://www.claro.com.br/portal/site/siteTA/ (please select "Rio de Janeiro")
This also doesn't work with Firefox, Camino or Opera. That page also has a whopping 367 errors according to the web standards validation page (validator.w3.org).
You see a blank rectangle above the menu and can't click it
image: http://img414.imageshack.us/my.php?image=imagem15yo.jpg
URL: http://globosat.globo.com/telecine/servicos/programacao.asp
The same for this site - neither Firefox, Camino or Opera will display anything in the blank area.
Can't click the menu on this site
image: http://img44.imageshack.us/my.php?image=imagem37sy.jpg
URL: http://www.premierpet.com.br/
And exactly the same for this. So, I'd say there isn't a serious problem with Safari and Flash, since they all fail in 3 other browsers as well.
Apple can only do so much with sloppily coded websites. If these sites want your business the onus should be on them to make them work correctly with as many browsers as possible. This is the real solution. -
I'm having a problem with a LR gallery I've exported. it shows fine as a flash gallery in safari but not as a html gallery, background colours are wrong (brown instead of blue), and the images are not displayed properly (image is too big for rectangle it is displayed and there are no scroll bars).
this is not a problem in firefox.
Can peeps check the gallery for me please and advise on what's happening?
thanks
... oh the galleries are here:
flash http://www.ba-joseph.co.uk/flashgallery/index.html
html http://www.ba-joseph.co.uk/gallery/index.html
thanks again.Ok, I'm posting my test results in case anyone is curious (I still am!):
http://www.madamexpod.com/lightshows/LS_sample01/index.html -
Exported from Lightroom yesterday. Remains mangled in different ways on Safari, IE, FIrefox and Camino on my end, though others in this thread say it works for them.
http://www.madamexpod.com/lightshows/LS_sample02/index.html -
Identical gallery, exported from Lightroom today (no changes). Works on Safari, is mangled on IE (shows up as only one cell with one thumbnail, then gets all goofy when trying to view the full size image), works on FIrefox and Camino
http://www.madamexpod.com/lightshows/LS_sample03/index.html -
Identical gallery, exported from Lightroom moments ago (no changes). Identical results to sample02 above.
So, for some unknown reason, sample01 is mangled for me. All of my galleries are mangled on IE but now they work on other browsers.
One more request: anyone want to try any/all of these on IE? That seems to be the weakest point here.
Huge thanks for all interested and helping!

Appearance of iWeb 2.0.2 pages in Safari and other browsers
I guess this question has been posted several times before because I can't find the relevant search terms to limit the number of answers to a reasonable count. Thus, sorry for the repetition (if so).
Is there a way to amend the appearance problems of iWeb 2.0.2 pages in Safari and other browsers?
Problems are:
Safari: color management (?) - take a look at this site: http://shivaduo.jan-groh.de - Text and frame were created with exactly the same web safe color (990033), but they differ a lot.
Firefox 2..., IE 6, Camino 1.5, Shiira: no shadows, (some) no reflections, (all) horizontally broken lines in reflections of frames, (Windows) fonts (Trebuchet MS) get changed (worked perfectly before with iWeb 1... on exactly the same computer).
Is there any remedy to this aestheical disaster (which was the main reason for me to switch to iLife '08)?
Thanks in advance,
Rosember
