Safari and Firefox both hang intermittently
My network connection seems to hang when attempting to open web pages (both in Safari and Firefox), sometimes for minutes, before finally loading the web page. I'm thinking this is an issue with my MBP (13" mid-2009), since my Windows machine (gasp!) and iDevices never hang. This issue happens both wirelessly and when I'm connected via ethernet. I'm using a Motorola SBG901 cable modem with Comcast (though this happened with a Verizon DSL modem as well). Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!
Yeah. I'm having the same problems since upgrading to Lion. This problem is not limited to the MBP. I have the same issues with both my 2011 MBP 15" and 2011 MB Air 13", and it is VERY irritating. I can't say that it happens during wired connections, as I always connect wirelessly through my Airport Extremes (I have two).
When it hangs in Safari, it hangs completely (i.e., Nothing happens, no matter what). I've seen this reported on other blogs, but I have yet to see a solution. Here is what I do - Note, I know that this is not the most elegant solution, but it does get things going again: Click "Safari/Reset Safari", and then select "Clear History", "Clear Downloads" and "Close Safari" buttons, and click the "reset" button. Afterwards, load your page, and it should come back up fine.
Again -- I know -- Definitely NOT the most elegant solution. But it does get one back online, and doesn't require a reboot (which is a solution that I've seen on other blogs).
Hope this helps. However, if you come up with something better, I would definitely be interested in the solution. Hopefully, Apple is reading this stuff, and will take note and fix. Definitely a Safari/Lion bug here .......

Safari and Camino both hang on specific sites
Hi all
I'm trying to help my girlfriend out with a problem on her computer. Just today, Safari stopped loading the NYTimes home page. It gets most of the way through loading the site, then hangs with a spinning beach ball. Thinking it might be browser related, I got her on to Camino, but it fails the same way. No crash, just a hang.
I read several other posts here that seemed related, and have so far tried:
1) Renaming the hard drive, and restarting Safari
2) Uninstalling and reinstalling Flash
3) Repairing permissions
4) Trying a 'new' account (I actually just logged in as Guest, figured that was enough)
and Safari still does not open successfully. It also fails on Youtube, People, etc, so does seem like a Flash problem.
This is on a 13" Macbook Duo, running 10.6.4. On my computer, a 15" Macbook Pro also running 10.6.4, both Safari and Camino work fine on the same pages.
Her machine worked fine as of yesterday, and there's been no updates to the machine since then. Any ideas on what to check?
ThanksThanks for the tips. Sadly that did not solve the problem.
I deleted cache.db. There was nothing in the ~/Library/* directories referred to by that link. The /Library/Internet Plug-ins folder had two things that were non-Flash and non-Quicktime related in there, one was a Shockwave file and the other was Microsoft Silverlight. I followed the instructions to uninstall Silverlight given at Microsoft's website.
After all that, Safari still hangs with the beachball at the NYTimes website and others. I noticed another post that recommended using Activity Monitor to sample the process, the output is below. Any other things to try?
Sampling process 4520 for 3 seconds with 1 millisecond of run time between samples
Sampling completed, processing symbols...
Analysis of sampling Safari (pid 4520) every 1 millisecond

Third party add ons harassing safari and firefox
third party add ons harassing safari and firefox both, tried turning off cookies add ons etc etc, removing all the files from library/script, add ons etc etc nothing works, when I press a link sometimes a blank page pops up with the top sites view and several commercials by the way, here's a screen http://tinypic.com/r/m7rsl0/8
could someone please help!
noahYou installed the "DownLite" trojan, perhaps under a different name. Remove it as follows.
Malware is constantly changing to get around the defenses against it. The instructions in this comment are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
/Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "VSearch" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
/Library/LaunchDaemons/Jack.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
/Library/Application Support/VSearch
/Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/Jack
/System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot" or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
This trojan is distributed on illegal websites that traffic in pirated movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect much worse to happen in the future.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the DownLite developer has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing, has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight is inexcusable and has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return. -
Safari and Firefox Behaviour on website
Hello,
I have been struggling to discover by myself why Safari and Firefox both perform the following bizarre activity when trying to click on a link in a div. The site is my own and I have run the pages through w3.org's validation services both for XHTML and CSS. The following occurs:
When I click anywhere on any of the div's in the website the font turns green and becomes larger. When there are links and one tries to click the link the previous effect occurs and the link is moved along with the text from under the mouse making it impossible to select the link. It has been making me crazy for quite some time and now I have exhausted all other resources to solve this problem.
The site is my own work and to assist in solving the problem the sites address is:
site
This bizare behaviour also occurs on some other sites that use div in their web pages. The page header for my index page is the following:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">For the past 12 years I have used the free BBEdit Light for mass edits across hundreds of web pages at once. It comes with separate historic and OS X versions packaged together. It is no longer supported and Bare Bones no longer list it on their site but it continues to work exceptionally well on my G4 with Leopard. It may be the fastest text editor you will ever use. It can also open large files - I have used it on 100 MB log files. It comes with excellent documentation which I still refer to for grep search and replace.
At the time of writing it can still be downloaded from at least one site at:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=%22BBEditLite6.1.2.smi%22
With a little thought and care it is surprising how many server-wide edits can be done in seconds with BBEdit. Don't forget to do a full backup of server pages before you start and perhaps at regular intervals. -
Safari and Firefox windows are keep blank even internet connection is OK
Hello,
I have a USB mobile broadband from Three.
For a few months it worked ok for my both iMac and Powerbook.
But since yesterday afternoon, somehow I can't see any web pages, except Google search and search results. I tried both Safari and Firefox, both didn't work. Also I can't receive or send my emails.
I checked internet connection, which must be fine. I see IP address and router address on network preference.
I cleared both browsers cache, and deleted all history, but didn't work.
Strange thing is that I can see Google and get results, but once I click any of search results, page gets just blank.
I'd be very pleased if anyone could solve this problem. When did this start? Which version of Firefox?
For reference, Firefox 23.0 was released on Tuesday, August 6th, and Firefox 23.0.1 was just released on Friday, August 16th.
Does the address bar work normally in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to bypass interference by extensions (and some custom settings). More info: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]].
If Firefox is running, you can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using
Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Reset)
If Firefox is not running, hold the Shift key when starting Firefox to get the Safe Mode dialog.
Any difference? -
The above headline pretty much covers the problems.
Access to the drop down menus is erratic. Sometimes it's problem-free, but at other times it's impossible to see the options on the menu, or if they are visible, it's impossible to effect a change by clicking on one of them. The times I notice it most is when I am trying to change fonts or font sizes, but it occurs at other times, as well.
It's also frustrating to have to deal with double spacing (for example, when describing items on eBay). Sometimes the text flows normally, but if I force a return, the text that follows usually is double-spaced.
Often, the justification option does not work either.
Occasionally, I can get around one problem or another by switching back and forth between Safari and Firefox, but eventually, the original problem resurfaces.
Because it happens on both browsers, eBay tech support is inclined to think the problem is in my software. (I'm inclined to agree.)
Although they have suggested clearing the history in FF, that option must have been relocated, because it'sno longer under the "Tools" menu, where it was in the past. I also can't find the clear your cache option on OS Safari or 10.8.3.callthescribe wrote:

I don't think it'd help much but clearing history is now in the History menu, and setting FF to clear history on exit is near the bottom of the Privacy tab of FF Preferences.
Also, if you don't have the Develop menu in Safari, open Safari preferences, click Advanced, and select “Show Develop menu in menu bar.” You'll find "Empty Caches" there. -
Safari (and Firefox) hang on Flash-Pages for main-account
Since Easter (when I took the last batch of upgrades) Safari and Firefox hang.
I narrowed the test down to the following web-page:
http://www.sunfleet.com
* The page does not load completely - after a little while I get this spinning ball and need to kill the hanging Safari-process.
* The same web-page works flawless on a second account.
This is what i tried so far after reading the communities:
* Checked the safari-preferences, switched off auto-fill, security settings allow loading of plug-ins.
* Executed Onyx 2.1.4 - check disk, check and repair rights, run scripts
* deinstalled Flash and reinstalled it (10.0.45.2) according to the instructions on the Adobe Support Page
* manually removed the Flash Player folders in:
Home/Library/Preferences/Macromedia
Home/Library/Caches
The error still prevails.
It would be great if someone could instruct me what to do next.
I have a backup via time-machine, but I really don't know what to restore.
Message was edited by: step5Hi Carolyn!
In the mean-while I removed all the Internet Plugins that were registered under the main user:
real-player and move-media-player are now gone.
Still no change. I made a new trace below - I wonder, what is different on the main account compared to the other user. Could it be fonts ?
Best regards
Stephan

When I turned on my computer today, the date and time were completely wrong. I then went to sign into familiar websites I use (gmail, facebook, etc) and both safari and firefox had pop ups that said that they could not "identify" and "verify" the sites. Once I verified, the sites would go through but wouldn't be completely loaded and won't work.
The date & time MUST be set correctly (within a few minutes and the correct Time Zone), or httpS: sites cannot work.

Sorry I didn't realize the above was just a subject line.
I have been trying to download java for my macbook pro, but for some reason the function is not recognizing the internet. I am on and have checked several times .... I have checked through both safari and firefox but to no avail. Thanks for any help anyone can give. Not really a reply just some added info:
This is the error message I get saying the internet is not on, but clearly as I can send this message it has to be:
To open “Java Preferences,” you need to install a Java runtime, but you are not connected to the Internet.
I am connected through Wi-fi if that makes a difference. -
Both Safari and Firefox will not load webpage
This is an issue in both Safari and Firefox (I use Firefox as my default, but since it's happening in Safari too, I figured I could post the problem here). I frequently visit Crate & Barrel's website and cb2.com, and as of recent I have not been able to load the site. I've tried on both my eMac (Safari and Firefox) and on my new iMac. I was able to load the page on a windows computer in my house. I'm not sure if I ever viewed their website on my iMac since it's new as of last month. On the eMac I visited the site often. Why all of the sudden would I not be able to load the website? Any help is greatly appreciated!
You have to love when Customer Service reps don't actually read your message:
To Crate & Barrel:
"I recently have not been able to access the Crate&Barrel
website on either my Apple eMac or my new iMac. However, I can access
the site on a Windows computer. I am using Firefox, so it can't be an
issue with the browser. I try to access the site using Safari and that
does not work either. I used to visit the site often on my eMac and
never had any issues loading the page. Any ideas as to what the problem
may be? And why all of the sudden? Any help is appreciated."
Crate & Barrel's Response:
"Thank you for your email.
If you are experiencing problems with our website site, feel free to download any of the following recommended browsers:
Firefox (For Mac, Windows and Linux)
http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/
Internet Explorer (For Windows)
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx
Safari (For Macintosh OS X)
http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/safari/
Netscape (For Mac, Windows and Linux)
http://browser.netscape.com/ns8/
Current AOL users may also enter "upgrade" as an AOL keyword.
If this does not work, we are not sure why you are experiencing difficulties. Please try to visit our website again later."
Are you serious? Did I not mention that I was using both Safari and Firefox? -
Safari and Firefox constantly crashing / hanging since 10.6.x
Both my browsers, Safari and Firefox are now locking up on me. I think it may be either Java or Flash related, but neither had any issues previous to the 10.6 (and immediate 10.6.1) upgrade.
Any suggestions?Try...
1 Repairing permissions
2 Uninstall Flash completely, restart your machine (or power it down for a while)
3 Reinstall Flash from Safari
4 Install Click2Flash plugin for Safari (http://rentzsch.github.com/clicktoflash/)
*To heck with Flash!*
It took me several times to finally have it Safari stable again.... but it worked eventually. -
Why i can't see any image on flickr.
That happens most of the times but not always?
Both, on Safari and Firefox i experience the same problem!
I reseted Safari but seems to be uselessYou can use these steps to check if images are blocked:
*Open the web page that has the images missing in a browser tab.
*Click the website favicon ([[Site Identity Button]]) on the left end of the location bar.
*Click the "More Information" button to open the "Page Info" window with the Security tab selected (also accessible via "Tools > Page Info").
*Go to the <i>Media</i> tab of the "Tools > Page Info" window.
*Select the first image link and scroll down through the list with the Down arrow key.
*If an image in the list is grayed and there is a check-mark in the box "<i>Block Images from...</i>" then remove that mark to unblock the images from that domain. -
Trouble loading some webpages in both Safari and Firefox
I am relatively new with Mac and have been reading a lot of the forum posts for my issue and can't seem to find the right remedy. I hope there is an answer out there, some where.
Here's is what I am working with, Safari 3.2.1, Firefox 3.0.10.
Here's what happened/s/ing:
A few days ago my homepage for both safari and firefox, www.google.com wouldn't load. I found I was able to load www.yahoo.com and other pages but some specific pages, wouldn't load. Those pages I can no longer load are employment websites with Taleo software which are redirects from the main employer page. The pages have loaded for me in the recent past.
I spoke with Mac Applecare technicians who ran me through what seems to be common advice in the forum to clear the cache, reset safari, repair permissions, run Onyx, change DNS servers, renamed my harddrive and rebooted, and so on. I have done them all, with limited success. By changing the DNS servers, I got google.com back but that is it. Nothing however has remedied the Taleo related sites.
My suspicion is there is a 3rd party software that is interfering but I feel like i have run the checks and there isn't. Or, something regarding the flashplayer or applets that need to load related to the Taleo software of the sites I am trying to reach that is running in the background without my knowledge.
The only program update that I can recall around the time of this trouble is I believe a Firefox update.
So, anyone have an idea how to fix this? I am in need of a job and need to access these sites. Obviously, I am not looking in the IT field for employment.
Thanks in advance for any constructive advice.I am relatively new with Mac and have been reading a lot of the forum posts for my issue and can't seem to find the right remedy. I hope there is an answer out there, some where.
