Safari and Firefox will not download from a particular site

Greetings,
I own a Dual 1.42 GHz PowerPC G4 (FW800) with 2 MB L3 cache per processor and 1 GB DDR SDRAM with the Mac OS X Version 10.4.11
My Safari version is 4.1.2 (4533.18.5)
My Firefox version is 3.6.10
I want to access this site for the information that it contains:
http://www.gis.mt.gov/
Safari has never worked with this site.
Firefox has worked very well for the past 2 years.
Recently, very recently, both browsers do NOT work with this site. I called the state's technical support and was informed:
1) That it is a hit or miss possibility for Safari and Firefox to work properly with this site; and,
2) That the site is optimized to operate with Internet Explorer for Windows.
I am unable to find and to download a recent version of Internet Explorer for Mac. Microsoft ended support for this browser (version 5.2.3) on 12/31/2006. I did download this version and it did not work.
Open this site: http://www.gis.mt.gov/
Click on “Property Map” located in upper left area of the screen.
On new drop-down, click on the “OK” button
A new window should appear with a map of Montana, with outlines of its 56 counties. If this map does NOT appear; then, the problem is being shown.
If this map of counties does appear; then, GREAT.
On this new window and in lower right hand corner choose a city and click on the “Go” button. A new window with the city shown should appear. If this city does not appear; then, there is the problem.
In the past I have used the “Property Map” most of the time because it contains information most useful to me. I want to continue using this “Property Map” into the future. The problem is that my results with both Safari and Firefox is a blank window after completing the above steps.
Help ! ! What can I do different/change/modify?

There is your answer. Many US Government sites are the same - they simply WILL NOT follow the necessary web standards to make them Apple and/or Safari compliant.
The only thing you can try is to go to Safari's Develop Menu and try using Internet Explorer as the User Agent.

  • Safari and Firefox will not download anything.

Whenever I click on a link to download anything, Safari crashes. Funnily enough, the only thing I have managed to download is Firefox. In Firefox, there is the same problem, but Firefox doesn't crash when I try to download, it just does nothing. I tried the Disk First Aid thing that was mentioned in other topics, and resetting safari. I don't think it's the download links that are wrong, because I've tried 5 or so downloads and they all crash safari. Could someone test and see if this downloads:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/radio_podcasts/lastfmrecenttracks.html
which is what I was trying to download first last night that wouldn't work. Any help is appreciated :]

    I tried deleting those files
Exactly which files did you delete? Some programs, such as, but not limited to, Speed Download, require that you use their provided uninstaller. Dragging the app to the trash will only lead to problems. Some plugins, such as PithHelmet, only work with specific browsers (Safari & Shiira for PithHelmet) so they would not affect behavior in other programs.
Have you tried using a new user account? If not, do so to see if your problem is account or system related. To create a new account, open System Preferences and click on Accounts. You may have to click on the padlock and give your admin name and password to create an account. Click on the plus sign in the lower right corner to create the new account. I see no reason to give it a password. You can delete this account later using using the minus key, although I have kept my second account to use for testing (the user folder only takes up 32 kb).

Firefox 4 versions and later do not run on a PowerPC Mac.<br />
Firefox 4 and later require at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac.

  • Both Safari and Firefox will not load webpage

This is an issue in both Safari and Firefox (I use Firefox as my default, but since it's happening in Safari too, I figured I could post the problem here). I frequently visit Crate & Barrel's website and cb2.com, and as of recent I have not been able to load the site. I've tried on both my eMac (Safari and Firefox) and on my new iMac. I was able to load the page on a windows computer in my house. I'm not sure if I ever viewed their website on my iMac since it's new as of last month. On the eMac I visited the site often. Why all of the sudden would I not be able to load the website? Any help is greatly appreciated!

You have to love when Customer Service reps don't actually read your message:
    To Crate & Barrel:
"I recently have not been able to access the Crate&Barrel
website on either my Apple eMac or my new iMac. However, I can access
the site on a Windows computer. I am using Firefox, so it can't be an
issue with the browser. I try to access the site using Safari and that
does not work either. I used to visit the site often on my eMac and
never had any issues loading the page. Any ideas as to what the problem
may be? And why all of the sudden? Any help is appreciated."
    Crate & Barrel's Response:
    "Thank you for your email.

If this does not work, we are not sure why you are experiencing difficulties. Please try to visit our website again later."
Are you serious? Did I not mention that I was using both Safari and Firefox?

  • Safari and Firefox will not complete downloads

    Firefox 3.0.10 and Safari 3.2.1
My dilemma is that when I attempt any download other than a pdf, the download either hangs or it does not happen at all. I have rebuilt permissions and restarted. I have G$ 17" Laptop with all setting set the same and I can download just fine. Sad thing is the G4 needs a new logic board so I moved to the desktop machine so that I could ween from the G4 so that I could send to Apple for repair. This is quite frustrating as you can imagine especially when it comes to updates, upgrades and software purchases, etc.
I have read many similar posts, but none that address this issue. I have also tried Onyx and it was not successful. BTW: I removed all extensions from Firefox and there are no third party extension running with Safari.
I would appreciate any wisdom out there in the forumspere.

  • Safari AND Firefox will not open Flickr or Yahoo

    Hi
    I'm running MAC OS X 10.7.5, Safari version 6.1.3 and Firefox 29.0.1.
Both Flickr and any related Yahoo page will NOT open on either browser.
WHen I try to open Flickr, Firefox comes up with the error message 'Unable to connect. Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.flickr.com'
Safari comes up with a grey screen and the error message 'Safari can't connect to the server. Safari can't open the page https://www.flickr.com because Safari can't connect to the server www.flickr.com'.
When I try Yahoo the Yahoo home page loads but everything is in blue text and a very basic version. If I click on any of the links the same error messages as above show up.
This has been happening for about 6 months. I was originally only using Safari, but installed Firefox only this evening in an attempt to try and solve the problem, but it has not helped. I get the same problem on both browsers.  Safari worked fine before. I cannot remember anything happening or any change of setting that may have set this off. I have trawled every forum imaginable and followed all the advice I can find, to no avail. I have tried:
    Clearing out caches. Regularly.
    Resetting Safari
    Changing the DNS settings
Looking into the Ipv6 settings (there is no option to turn it 'off'. Changing it to 'link local' only turned the WiFi off
    Turning the Firewall off.
    Turning the Firewall back on.
I have not tried changing any router settings as I'm not sure how. But I can open Yahoo and Flickr no problem using my HTC phone so it can't be a router problem?  I am tearing my hair out here! I read somewhere that Yahoo and Flickr are very closely linked, so the problem must be related to a setting with these sites?
Can anyone out there help? Please!!

    Marwood71,
yes, Yahoo! bought Flickr back in 2005, so they are closely linked.
If you’re trying to use Flickr’s secure HTTP site, then try connecting to https://secure.flickr.com/ instead.

  • Safari and Firefox will not open certain web pages

I just bought a MacBook yesterday and since then have not been able to open certain websites using firefox or safari. I have been trying to access www.recolorado.com and www.people.com and keep getting the error that the page timed out because server is not responding. I called apple support yesterday and was told to reinstall the operating system which did not help. My husband has a PC that is connected to the same internet connection and he can open these sites with no problem. I have tried resetting safari, but still can't get to these sites. Does anyone have any suggestions??

I was having the same problem and it was driving me INSANE because every solution I found on the internet said "just use Firefox!" (my default browser). It doesn't matter whether it's Firefox, Safari, Netscape, Opera, whatever, the computer was NOT accessing these sites. It seemed to coincide with a recent OS update, but maybe that's just my imagination.
Then my sister-in-law came over with her totally identical MacBook and complained of having the exact same problem accessing the same sites!
On top of this, I had no problem accessing these on my iMac in Chicago last week (running the same OS and software), so I concluded it had to be our router.
In my case, it was solved by simply rebooting the router. Have you tried this? It seems so simple, but now I can access every site that I was having trouble with. You might have to reconfigure something on your router, I don't know much about this. But my general conclusion is that something was wrong with the way the MacBook and router were communicating. Sorry I can't be more specific!

  • Safari and Firefox do not open search engines

I have an IMac 8.1, with OS 10.5.8.  Recently, our internet browser programs (safari and firefox) will not open any search engine (google, bing or yahoo).  However, I am able to navigate to web-sites that I manually type in (e.g., www.cnn.com). Does anyone know what the cause, and fix, to this issue?  Also, this behavior did coincide with a recent update to our Intego Antivirus software, but I think this is unrelated.
Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks,

Also, this behavior did coincide with a recent update to our Intego Antivirus software, but I think this is unrelated
Maybe not. Most, if not almost all, anti-virus software interferes with OS X and is not required.
    Try installing Glims:
If you want to fix your Google search to a specific Google location, I recommend that you download and install the free plug-in Glims:
    http://www.machangout.com/
which not only does that but much more equally useful stuff! Such as enabling Safari to run full-screen, and more.)
(It adds items to Safari Preferences).
Not only does it already list a number of search engines and regions, but you can also add any other search engine not already listed in Glims by using the method described here:
    http://www.machangout.com/tutorials/addsearchengine
Just enter the name you give the search engine in the name field, and the URL for it in the Query URL field.

If there are problems with importing the IE Favorites in Firefox then export the favorites in IE to an HTML file and import that file in the Firefox Bookmarks Manager.
If you do not have the menu bar in IE then right-click the toolbar at the top to enable the Menu Bar.
*Export the favorites in IE to an HTML file (bookmarks.html):<br>File > Import and Export
