Safari and Gmail Problem

I recently purchased an iMac, and have Leopard installed. I created separate accounts for my family members on the computer before realizing that Gmail only worked on the administrator account. On every other account when I attemtped to view Gmail, the browser showed this error message:
Safari can’t open the page “http://mail.google.com/mail?hl=en&tab=wm” because it could not connect to the server “mail.google.com”.
I have Safari 3.0.4 and am baffled at why Gmail only works on the administrator account.
Any help would be greatly appreciated...

I had partial success with this. In the Parental Controls pane, you can add sites that are explicitly allowed. So I added
http://mail.google.com
and later another Google site (don't recall the URL) that was also claimed to be unreachable. That enabled Gmail to be read. However, when we tried sending a message, Gmail claimed to be suffering "technical problems". Maybe some other site needs to be added to the list.

  • Safari and Gmail Chat

I set up my wife’s gmail account on her macbook and then we went through the idea that we could chat while I was at work (offshore). So I invited her to chat and she went through the process to be able to chat and BLANK, every time she tried to use chat nothing would happen so after many failed attempts we kind of gave up.
Anyway at work I decided to try using two PC computers and Bobs your uncle it worked, so I again asked my wife to try but BLANK so I got my wife to open Windows XP (she also has boot camp) and Bobs your uncle we can chat.
So what is the problem with Safari and Gmail?

Unfortunately now you can only get the chat working in Firefox as far as I know. You can however download Adium (http://www.adiumx.com/) and add the Google Talk account and get it running there. Hopefully a future update to Safari 3 will fix this

  • Safari and Gmail very slow

This may be a sign of Google releasing that BUZZ thing, but I have noticed gmail to very slow with Safari. Getting a lot of "still working" messages. I have BUZZ turned off. But I am assuming that BUZZ might be dragging their network down with high traffic.
Of course, I have reset safari, etc..

    HI,
    Gmail and Safari issues
According to Google, "Gmail users with Safari version 4.0.4 might encounter issues loading Gmail and other issues". This link has more info: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/static.py?page=known_issues.cs
    Also, try Safari maintenance..
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem.

Web pages now include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the address bar and next to bookmarks. These icons take up disk space and slow Safari down. It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. **To delete Safari's icon cache using the Finder, open your user folder, navigate to ~/Library/Safari/ and move this file "webpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
    Repair disk permissions..
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
Make sure the there's enough free disk space. Not enough will slow the drive down. Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. *Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.*

  • Safari and flash problem!

ok, i have a website running, it is done in flash
professional 8 and i have flash player 9 installed. It works fine
on internet explorer, loads up and everything runs great.
I then tried it on safari and it loads up straight away
although when i click on the links they dont respond or when they
do they go to somewhere else, like a scene i have not linked it to.
Reason i think it is doing this is because it isnt properly
loaded, it says its loaded and the bar finishes loading but doesnt
work correctly, if it is then left for a little while it works
fine.. so i really don;t know what is going on.
It works fine on an apple mac in preview mode, it is just in
safari that is causing problems, the mac has flash player 9 also so
i don;t know what to do now...
how can i get round this because its been causing problems
for ages now, basically its saying it has loaded and it hasnt
properly, and therefore the links are not functioning correctly...
this is what i think anyway.
    any help or ideas?

I found a solution to the issues with the 9r115 release of
Flash player. I got it to install on my G5 iMac (OS X 10.4.11). The
issue is that your regular ID needs to have admin privileges for
Flash to install and run correctly. I have two (2) user IDs on my
machine at home - a regular ID (with no admin privileges) for daily
use and one I use for admin stuff (for doing software updates and
installs). (I think it was recommended to split things up this
    way).
I was able to download and install Flash Player 9r115 using
my admin account and Safari (I'm using the latest 3.1) correctly
recognized it was there when I went to places that require Flash
(cnn.com, scifi.com) - but did NOT recognize it when I went to
those same sites under my regular ID.
I also went to Disk Utility and did a Repair Permissions -
the Flash installer apparently mucks around with the permissions,
and repairing them seems to fix things.
Also, I used the Accounts area of System Preferences to turn
on the admin rights under my regular ID (logged out and in) and
then Flash worked correctly with Safari at the web sites that
    require it.
So the workaround for 9r115 seems to be:
    1) make sure your Mac logon ID has admin rights to the box
    (this may not be needed).
    2) download and install the Flash player
    3) run Disk Utility to repair permissions
    4) restart your browser
FYI, this also fixed issues I had with Adobe Acrobat Reader
where I had to logon to my admin ID to do check for and install
updates. Now with machine admin rights on my regular ID, I can
download and install updates (I had 8.1.1, now I have 8.1.2)

  • Safari and airport problems

Safari started about a month ago getting hung up when loading, ending up with just not loading at all. Then I started getting messages that I was unable to join my network. I can get online at my office wirelessly(different network)but Safari is still very slow. At home, with my linksys router and Time Warner cable modem, I now only occasionally can get online. When I do get online, Ichat crashes continuously. My desktops work, and my husband's wireless radio works, but not my laptop. I have tried resetting router, called cable company and they said modem was fine. I removed plists and favicons, reset Safari, and added Open DNS numbers, which I later removed because it made connecting worse. I have run Disk Utility and repaired preferences. What is left??? I am reluctant to do the reinstall/archive. Pros and cons of this course of action? Sally

I had the Safari problem in terms of it getting hung up while loading web addresses and had to go through diagnostics every time I moved the laptop from office network to home instead of it switching automatically. How do I tell if Little Snitch is still there? I can see it in the download queue, but no where else. Also, even tho I have to switch manually to the office network and Safari is slow, at least I stay online here without Safari stopping or getting error messages, which makes me wonder if my router is messed up and contributing to problems. I have reset and unplugged my home router with no apparent effect. Sally

  • Intel imac G5, Safari and Godaddy problems

I have an intel imac G5 with OS 10.4.5 with Safari 2.0.3 and can not access my GoDaddy hosted website directly or with forwarding (on or off)...
I can however access the GoDaddy hosted website with my imac G5 (non-intel) with the same version Mac OS and Safari and with a Windows computer.
I can only assume this is a problem with my intel imac?
Another weird problem...my site is still on an SBC webhosting.com hosting server and I can only access the SBC hosted site with Safari not the Godaddy site. SBC has not cancelled the account and has not taken the old site down as of yet.
I have tried clearing the cache, Firefox, and pinging the godaddy site ip address.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

very strange...right after I posted, I received an intel mac security upgrade...installed it and the problem was fixed...wow...
    sorry for the post...

  • Safari and GMail -- Crash when selecting a message

    All,
I just got a new MacBook Pro, he Safari instance on my machine is 2.0.4 which I believe is the newest non-beta version. I am able to log into GMail, however when ever I try and select a specific message, the application crashes out to a "Report to Apple" screen. I've flushed the cache, reset Safari, and zapped the PRAM. Has anyone else ever seen this behavior?
    THanks!
    Josh

I have the same issue. I have sub-folders, but have been using Thunderbird for many years and this was never an issue, though I had a similar issue a year or so ago because of a McAfee issue that was finally solved. I usually have less than 20 e-mails in my inbox. I delete or file messages daily.

  • Safari and Gmail

    Hi,
I'm not sure if this is in the right thread? However whenever I try and attach a word file using gmail it says every file has a virus. It is extremely annoying having to paste everything into the body of the e-mail. Please help!!!

I can attach Word docs to gmail emails with no trouble. Are you using Safari on a Mac? What versions of Safari and the Mac OS?

  • Macmail and gmail problem

Have been using macmail imap and gmail for ages, have not made any changes (Imap enabled in gmail and in mac mail imap set up as normal) imap mail is taking up to a day to reach mac mail.
On the general settings - have 2 pop accounts with my isp and imap with gmail - settings are to check every minute.
All other mail apart from gmail arrives instantly.
I have only noticed the problem within the last month
The version of mail i have is Version 7.0 (1822)
which i think is the latest i think.

Some suggestions for trying to make Mail and Gmail work together better.
    Gmail with Apple Mail

  • Safari and Network problem

I have an MBP and a iMac 24" both Intel core 2 duo computers connected wirelessly to a BT home hub etc. I also have a MBP 2.16g Intel Duo.
The core 2 duo MBP and Imac both have network and browser issues where the older MBP is ok.
The network drops out and I have to reset them to re connect.
Safari and Firefox wont allow me to login to some web sites with user names and passwords like ebay where as the old MBP will login with no problems
Any ideas, all are up to date and checked for viruses etc

    The probable culprits could be:
    1. Preference files are damaged
    2. Cache file corruption
    3. Incompatible Contextual Menu Items
    4. Incompatible Input Managers
    5. Incompatible Internet Plug-ins
    6. Bad Startup Items
    7. Incompatible Preference Panes
These for starters. They would be items in the /Home/ or /Home/Library/ folder. I would suggest you start by installing AppleJack - VersionTracker or MacUpdate - then following the instructions to boot into single-user mode and run the AppleJack routines - use the automatic mode.
For Safari I would try clearing its history and other caches.

  • Safari and Gmail continuous loading

I have noticed that after you log into your mail, gmail seems to continue to load for a long period of time. The main page loads, but just continues to load (from the spinning sprocket in the address bar). I have reset safari, etc. Everything seems to work. Just wondered if anyone else has seen this.

    HI,
    Try Safari Maintenance
    And...
    1. Quit Safari if it's running.
    2. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Safari and delete all the sub-folders within that one.
    3. Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete any of these files you have there:
    • Downloads.plist
    • History.plist
    • LastSession.plist
    4. Restart Safari and restart your Mac.

  • Safari and youtube problems

Ok...so i've had this problem before and i ended up uninstalling safari which turned out to be a bigger mistake until someone helped me to find the right download to restore it...but anyway since restoring the problem i'm about to describe hadn't come up until the last few days...so i'll describe it again here....
The problem seems to be directly related to youtube...but only with safari, as i've started using firefox (my back up browser) again when the problem comes up and i simply don't have the problem then....only with safari...so hopefully someone can help me troubleshoot and resolve the issue.
The problem starts with a general freezing of safari, but only when i'm watching a youtube video...and directly on youtube....in other words, embeded youtube videos at other sites don't seem to be an issue, but sometimes, not always and not on every video if i pull it up on youtube.com, the video screen remains a stagnant black...not thinking wheel or sound or static or anything, just a dead black window with no  volume or any other controls.
So when i go to my subscriptions for excample, there are certain videos that that happens when i go to the vid page....i back out and retry and have tried to reload the page, etc, but to no avail....just a dead black screen.  But then i can try the next video and it will work fine.....and the issue seems consistent with the same videos, tho those videos collectively are random...meaning not from the same poster, or not under a certain resolution setting or anything like that...so as an example, if video A and B and C play fine, then i get to video D and it doesn't work.....then A and B and C always work, and D always does not.....  that's after shutting down safari  and reopening it...after shutting down the computer and restarting it....the issue is persistent on whichever vids had th problem to begin with...so then i thought let's test with another browser and see what happens....it almost seems like those video's flash is not working...but only those specific videos and only on Safari...
So then i pull up firefox and they all play fine, noooo problem...period....no problem on firefox....so i've determined it somethin to do with Safari...but the what and the how to fix are my problem....has anyone else experienced this and maybe know how i can at least find an error log or something that i can post here it will help someone to help me fix it?
running safari 5.1.7 on os 10.6.8
Any help thqt isn't telling me to retry the things i've already tried here is greatly welcome and will get the Helpful button and hopefully teh problem solved button.  Thanks!

sorry, did a search and nothting came up for some reason, but as i posted i see posts on the right that sound like my problems so i'm tryin them as i see them and updating my question accordingly.....said to turn off extensions...and that was my first solution the last time this happened, and they have never since been turned on....so they are already off....so that's not helping either...

  • Safari and Firefox problems: hotmail, facebook ect. don't work

I am having all sorts of problems with Safari and Firefox. I cannot get on hotmail, facebook and many other sites, but I can use google, just half the links won't load. Ran diagnostics, reset safari, uninstalled and reinstalled firefox. Have no idea what to do next. Any suggestions??

    Erin...
Empty your browser caches more often.
Deleting cookies may help also. Go to ~/Library/Cookies. Move the Cookies.plist file from the Cookies folder to the Trash.
~ (Tilde) character represents the Home folder.
If emptying the cache nor deleting cookies helped, try Safari in another user account.
If you have the same problems there log back into your admin account.
Launch Disk Utility. That's located in /Applications/Utilities
Select the startup disk in the panel on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click: Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If the disk needs repairing follow the instructions for Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks

  • Safari and Java Problem

    Hi,
I'm having a problem with the newest updates to Safari. This problem did not occur until late december when I installed several updates via Software Update.
    Problem:
I use a photo uploader on a website from my company (unfortunately I can't give out the URL, as it is protected). But it is similar to many other photo uploader sites - load a Java applet, drag images files into a Java window, the files are added to a upload list and then uploaded.
Now, if I drag 10 items into the window, only one or two will be added to the list. If I drag them in one at a time, all the images will be added. Previously it was possible to drag as many as one wanted in.
Now the really irritating part : During the upload, the Java uploader completely hijacks Safari. The window the uploader allways stays active on top. If I open a new tab or window the uploader window will reappear on top and dominate the action. The only way to get anything done while I am uploading photos is to open another browser like Firefox. Safari is completely occupied with the Java program.
Computer: MBP 2.16 GHz, 2GB RAM, OSX 10.4.11
    Safari 3.0.4
Java 5.0 (not sure of the revision, but it is the most recent)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had similar Java problems with Safari and Firefox. I downloaded Navigator and now can run any Java app I need. One thing that may or may not have had any impact: when installing Nav, it asked if I wanted to import settings from Safari or Firefox. I chose not to import any settings. Works perfectly.

  • App Store, Safari, and Netflix Problems, please help

Im showing a strong wifi connection with my ipad 2, but when trying to access itunes or the app store, the pages wont fully load. Some of the thumbnail images will only show ? Marks and sometimes page wont even load at all until i try it again. Same happens in safari and netflix. My iphone 4 is working fine however when just on wifi. Ive tried resetting network, hard resets and a bunch of other tricks, but nothing working. Some apps are working fine, but why would this be happening with itunes, safari, and netflix? Does anyone have a solution?

I see you wrote your question at 1:05 AM.  Chances are it didn't get read much as some of us who spend a great deal of time here helping people, just might have been asleep.  Sarcasm won't help you much.
Now, have you actually fully closed the apps, then reboot?  To fully close the apps, go to your home page, then double tap your home button to bring up the task bar (most recently used apps).  Hold your finger on any of the recently used apps until they all start to jiggle.  You'll see a on the top left of each app.  Touch the minus on each of the apps you're having trouble with to fully close them.  Then touch your home button once more to stop the apps from jiggling and then again, to return to your home page.
Then, do the hard reset (in case you didn't do it properly).  Press and hold BOTH the home and power buttons at the SAME time for at least 10 seconds (ignore the red slider) until the Apple Logo appears, then let go of both buttons and your iPad will restart.
Try the apps after your iPad comes back up and hopefully, they will work correctly.
