Safari and saved passwords

hi
i was wondering if any faced this same problem whereby Safari just doesn't remember the passwords anymore?
under safari > preferences > autofill > i have everything checked, incl users name and passwords
however, when i navigate to a website with a username/email and password to be entered, the email/username autofills, but NOT the password.
(i have been to this site, entered the password, and saved before)
however, when i type in the same password, safari says, "this password is different ... would you like to save"
of cos i do instead of "not now" or "never" but it just happenss time and time again
i have tried to "remove all" usernames and password from preferences > autofill but it didnt help
please help... its irritating me and firefox now seeems a SMARTER alternative.

Thanks, but private browsing isn't enabled. At first I thought it was a .mac sync issue, but creating a clean account on the laptop (not really a PowerBook as I said, in the first post, but a new MBP), had essentially the same problem. Saved passwords wouldn't stick. This isn't an issue on my iMac running Leopard 10.5.1.
I've tinkered a little further, and I can delete the entries from the keychain and copy in a new entry from a clean keychain imported from the iMac (using file copy, instead of .mac sync). That will load and retain the passwords properly, but then I discover new wrinkle to this problem. Safari can no longer keep track of passwords for multiple usernames for the site. My wife and I have different usernames for webmail sites. It won't retain separate passwords for each username.
No third party extensions/hacks. Again, this was a pristine system. Several people seem to have similar problems, so I'm hoping Apple's working on it.

  • How can i recover my bookmarks and saved passwords?

i have accidentally uninstalled Firefox software. how can i recover my bookmarks and saved passwords for the various sites. Please help on this regard. I'm in a serious trouble now.

If you have removed your personal data when uninstalling Firefox then the Firefox profile folder that store your Firefox personal data has been removed.
If you do not have a backup of the files in this folder then your only option is to try to recover this data with an undelete utility like Recuva.

  • How can I merge bookmarks and saved passwords from two computers onto one computer?

Before I got rid of my old computer, I backed up my profile folder on a thumb drive. Then, I got a new computer and started customizing firefox, adding bookmarks and new saved passwords, without ever uploading my passwords and bookmarks from my old computer 's profile. How can I add the bookmarks from my old computer's profile folder onto my new computer's new firefox profile?

That is about saving your current bookmarks to an HTML file because you would lose those when you restore a JSON backup from the backup.

  • Changed Computer. Old HDD is now slave. FF is not finding old settings and saved passwords. Very Important Saved Passwords.

    Hi,
I have changed my Computer. Essentially, the M/B, CPU, RAM, HDD, etc. I still have my old HDD and Mozilla was installed there. I have a lot of saved passwords on that Firefox. I have started Firefox from there itself. Yet, FF doesn't find those passwords and other things. These are very important as they are passwords for Income Tax, Service Tax, VAT websites of various clients. I am a tax consultant. So, If I cant recover those, I'm dead. Please help.

For the passwords you need key3.db and signons.sqlite

  • Safari stopped saving passwords

I deleted an an entry from my sav password list because I was changing to a new password.  Now Safari is not asking to save the new password.  I tried quiting then reopenning Safari and logging on and off the site several times, but I still can not save the password.
If I can't get Safari to save it, is there a safe 3rd party program or App I can have on my MACs to store and enter IDs and passwords?

If Safari doesn’t ask whether you want to save your user name and password, choose Safari > Preferences, click AutoFill, and turn on “User names and passwords.

Sometimes unchecking and rechecking the preference setting restores the default.

  • Filling a text field in Safari and saving the page as 'save as'

My telephone system creates a call log and I like to automate downloading it weekly.
In order to get in it needs to enter a password (there is also a user name field but that is left blank by me).
Once in is should safe a ‘Save as” copy to my desktop.
I have written a script and it does not work (probably because I am not good at scripting.
    Can anyone help?
This script gets me as far as the dialog box that asks for Password to open.
    tell application "Safari"
    activate
tell (make new document) to set URL to "http://192.168.1.90"
    Thanks

Thank you for all your help above.
Just to confirm your advice, am I right with the following conclusions? :
    1. The script (function) to fill the text field with the modification date of a different PDF file needs to be stored in a folder level .js file.
    2. The document containing the text field needs to call the .js function either within the document script or within the custom script property of the text field itself.
Further to that can you just advise on the syntax for accessing the modification date of the other document.
Do I need to assign a variable to the address of the file to be used, and then use this variable in the text form filling script (as below) or can I use a direct file reference at the .modDate command.
    var LastSync = "C:\sync\bin\lastsync.pdf";
    var strMsg = util.printd("h:MM tt",LastSync.modDate) + " on ";
    strMsg += util.printd("dddd, d mmmm, yyyy",LastSync.modDate);
    this.getField("LastSyncDate").value = strMsg;
If the syntax is totally different to the above I would be very grateful for some guidance in the right direction.
I much appreciate your time to help me ... I'm almost there.
    Kind Regards,
    Nifty

  • There's a password in my Safari/iCloud saved passwords that I don't recognize.  What's the deal?

When I go into Safari -- Preferences -- Passwords, there is a website/username/password that I don't recognize.  Myself and my husband are the only ones that use my computer.
The website is listed as "--https" with a username that ends in @type1 (I don't know what that is) and an odd password.  Can I delete this?  Where did this come from?

Make sure you have inadvertently turned on private browsing on your phone.  It will not sync iCloud tabs if private browsing is turned on.  There are some other troubleshooting steps you can look through here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5372.

  • Safari not saving passwords

When I first use a password to log into a site, Safari asks me if I'd like to save the password, and gives 3 options - yes, never or later (or something like that). I have some sites which I selected the later option, but now it doesn't ask me again. So how do I change my mind and save my password in sites which I didn't choose to save them in the first place, IYKWIM

Use LastPass instead -- it'll give you secure access to (and use of) your passwords on any device.  I use it on my Macs, my Linux boxes, my VMs, and my Android phone.  It's great!

    Hi

Fron your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
    Click:  Remove All Website Data
    Now empty the cache.
Back to the menu bar, go to Safari > Preferences then select the Advanced tab.
Select:  Show Develop menu in menu bar
Now click Develop from the menu bar. From the drop down menu click Empty Caches.
That will delete temporary internet files as well.

  • I've currently got Firefox 3.6, the automatic update doesn't pick up the newer version, my question is if I use the Firefox v7 installer, will it erase my current settings and saved passwords or bookmarks?

Currently running Firefox 3.6.23 on Windows Vista

No it will not. Your settings, passwords, bookmarks and other data are stored in another location so they won't be harmed.
As a precaution, you can Backup your Profile before installing Firefox 7

  • I go to tools then options when I try to open saved passwords it brings up a red circle with a line through it and wont open

I go to tools and the options and I can't open any of the tabs at the top Eg I go to exceptions and I get a red circle with a line through it.This is the same for all of the options that have exceptions and saved passwords.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    * https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

I lost my bookmarks, saved passwords etc while doing trouble shooting information and made reset and it asks import form any browsers i clicked cancel.please help me how to recover my old bookmarks and saved passwords?

    Hi,
You can try to start the [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=Managing-profiles#w_starting-the-profile-manager Firefox Profile Manager] and choose the '''*.default''' profile. Hopefully the bookmarks, history and passwords will be back. You can also check in the other profiles by exiting the currently started Firefox and starting another, or you can also try to start all the profiles one by one by using '''firefox.exe -p -no-remote'''.
As a precaution you may want to take a backup of all the profiles: Type '''%appdata%''' in the Run box (Windows key + '''R'''), open '''Mozilla\Firefox''' and copy the '''Profiles''' folder.

  • I have been infected by trove adware, I was able to remove it, but I couldn't get default setting of safari and keeping bookmarks, saved passwords, ..etc

I have been infected by trove adware, I was able to remove it, but I couldn't get default setting of safari and keeping bookmarks, saved passwords, ..etc

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed the "Trovi," "Conduit," or "SearchProtect" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Besides the files listed in the linked support article, you may also need to remove these files in the same way:
    ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/searchplugins/MyBrand.xml
    ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/External Extensions/fjadmdmahkpbhgbmmkiiaanlnlekelmn.json
    ~/Library/Application Support/Mozilla/Extensions/{ec8030f7-c20a-464f-9b0e-13a3a9e97384}/[email protected]
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
"SearchProtect" may be distributed along with two other applications: "MacKeeper," which is a scam, and "ZipCloud," which, if not actually a scam, has a dubious reputation. Ask if you need instructions to remove those items.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

  • Safari- Remove Saved Names and Passwords

    Hello,
I am trying to remove saved e-mails under the login for facebook. It used to work when going to Safari, Reset Safari, and then Remove Saved Names and Passwords. Now when I do this the e-mail addresses are still saved and I do not know what to do. Please help if you have an idea of what to do or know what to do!

Now it's seems that you're using the AutoFill function. So, if it isn't clearing the passwords for you for Facebook, open Keychain Access > Passwords and scroll through the list until you find the one(s) you're looking for and delete them.
Then quit Keychain Access and restart Safari and that should fix your problem.
