Safari and Software Update won't connect to the internet

I'm running OS 10.4.11 and have installed a new router which works fine on my G5 running the same OS. However when I now Try and run Safari I get the Message: Safari can’t open the page “http://www.google.com/” because Safari can’t connect to the server “www.google.com”. and When I try and run Software Update I get the Message that it cannot connect to the server. Firefox runs fine on the same computer has anyone any idea please? or suggest a fix

Fixed it myself. Under network settings "Auto Proxy Discovery" was enabled. When I turned this off everything started working again. Not sure how this was enabled in the first place.

In response to how did I update if safari and update didn't work with 10.5 and 10.6. Your question is silly. I updated from 10.6.4 and as I said Camino works fine and always has.

Software update won't connect to the internet

I get the the messge " Cannot Connect to the App Store - An internet connection is required" when trying to use software updaet in mountain lion. I can go to and use the App Store and my internet workd fine but the updates section does not work. Anyone else having this issue?

Have the same problem. Internet works fine, and I can access everything in the App Store except Software Update and Purchases. I get a message: "Cannot connect to the App Store: An Internet connection is required." Yet my Internet connection is fine; everything else that requires Internet (Safari, etc.) works fine. When I try to log on to the App Store with my Apple ID and password, I get a message that the "connection failed." Everything else on my system works flawlessly; hence, I don't think the problem is with my system. For some reason, the App Store cannot detect my Internet connection.
Spoke with Apple Tech Support and they talked me through the simple trouble shoots (network corruption, safe mode restart to identify conflicting programs, permissions repair, corrupt preferences file, etc.). Nothing helped. Finally, I did a complete re-install of Mountain Lion in the hopes that that would correct the problem. It didn't. Apparently the problem is on Apple's end with the App Store. They've passed along the problem to their engineers in the hope that they can figure it out. Will let you know what they say.

Software Update can't connect to the internet after a new install of 10.6

I had a clean install of 10.6 and after that the Software Update can't connect to the internet (the status bar hangs at the beginning and finally it prompts me the internet is not connected) while all my other applications can.
Someone help me out?

I am having exactly the same problem as well.. has anybody managed to solve this yet? I have uploaded Snow Leopard - try to connect to Software Update - the menu bar scans a little then stops and then an error saying 'Not connected to the internet'' but the connection is working fine!!
Is this a SL issue? or just an overload with the Software Update programme? I cant do anything - no update for itunes/iphone software, etc.. most annoying.
Look forward to seeing some good news and some answers to this one.

Mail, Safari and Software Update won't launch?

My Mail, Safari and Software Update apps don't launch after my last Software Update installed Quicktime 7.0.4 and iTunes 6.0.2. During that update (Jan 12, 06) I got the spinning ball and ended up restarting because nothing was happening...
That's when my apps stopped opening.
This is what Console says when I try:

Yes, it looks like something is not right with /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/WebKit. The message "filesize extends past end of the library" sounds like there might be some corruption of the filesystem, although I certainly could be wrong about this. (The filesystem is the operating system's mechanism for determining where files actually start and stop on the harddrive.)
The first thing to try would be to attempt to repair the filesystem. This can be accomplished by booting of your Panther Install CD and using Disk Utility to do a Repair Disk. There are good instructions for that at Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption. See the section on Repair Disk.
If that does not work, I suggest that you try to replace /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/WebKit. If you have another computer with the same operating system, you could connect via target disk mode and copy over the good folder to replace the bad one. Alternatively, you could do an Archive and Install.

Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

Software update says not connected to the internet...but I am!!

Can anyone help me please? whenever I try to use Software Update (from either the apple menu or System Prefs-network) I get a prompt saying I am not connected to the internet, but I am as I can launch Safari.
The prompt also asks if I want to run a diagnostic on the network, if I accept and follow the instructions I get a window saying there is nothing wrong with my connection.
Why can this be? Can anyone throw some light on this for me?

You should be OK if you don't install into the User Account Home. Put them, as appropriate, into System Applications or Shared.

Software Update can't connect to the internet

Hi everyone
My iMac's software update can't seem to find my internet connection. It gives this message after trying to find new updates:
*A networking error has occurred: timed out (-1001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again.*
Software Update can't check for updates because of a network problem.
Then I can click either 'Network Diagnostics' - which always says I'm connected, or 'Quit'
Is there some way I can get Software Update back online so that I don't have to manually download everything from the apple website??

You can try something easy first. Trash a couple of preference files:
com.apple.softwareupdate.plist
com.apple.softwareupdate.nnnnnnnn.plist (where nnnnn is a bunch of numbers and letters)
Restart.

Moved AirPort Extreme and now it won't connect to the internet

I have moved my base station on previous occassions with no problems--plug and play if you will.
I just moved it to a new location and while the computers in the house recognize the wireless network with no problems, the base station no longer successfully connects to the internet.
I have plugged my MacBook Pro directly to my cable modem and confirmed that the internet still works perfectly well to the house. Plugging that same cable into the base station does not bring the internet up.
I've used the AirPort Utility to act like I'm starting from scratch.
I've chosen Manual configuration and replicated all the data from the MacBook's succesful hookup with no success.
I have manually reset the base station and tried the above again, no success.
Any other ideas? It seems too coincidental to me that there could be an actual hardware issue (everything was perfect right before I moved it (I know, I know--that begs the question, why'd you move it? I should say everything was good, except for one room in the house received a weak signal, so I wanted it to be more centrally located)) that arose just as I moved it. My guess is I just need a little tweak to a setting or something but I can't say I understand what all this DHCP stuff is about.

Most cable modems require that you power them off whenever you switch the Ethernet connection from one device to another. The cable modem will refuse to communicate with the new device if you do not do this.
Did you power off/on the cable modem when you switched the connection from the MacBook Pro to the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS)?
Some cable modems have a reset switch for this task.
Some cable modems have an internal battery which must be removed to do this reset.
Sometimes the cable modem must be left turned off for several hours or even overnight to reset equipment back at the ISP's office.

Safari and Software Update won't launch on Macbook

I have a macbook (OS X 10.4.11) that I haven't used in a while. I tried to use it today but Safari crashes as soon as I launch it. I can't even view a page--Safari and its menu appear momentarily on the top bar and then disappear. Software Update does the same thing. Skype didn't launch the first time I tried, but it did after doing some disk repair. I don't want to use the Mac CD to take it to factory settings because I don't want to lose the Microsoft Office I have on it. Is there a way to make these programs work?

When you boot up the Mac with the install disc in, hold the C key for around 10-20 seconds. THEN let go of the C key. I notice this when doing this on my Mac. I would hold down the C key for a minute, and give up cause I think it just froze, and let go of the button only to find out that it didn't really work cause I had to let go of the C key. It also takes a while to boot up too. I'm not sure about the next part, but I think it goes like this. It will show you a installation screen, and on the top bar, you click utilities and Disk Utility. I don't remember the whole process cause I haven't done it in a while.

Updated itouch and now it won't connect to the internet.

I updated my itouch software to 3.0 when I plugged my touch into the computer today. My music and everything synced as normal, but when i ejected the itouch it would no longer connect to wifi. This happened to my brother's earlier in the week and apple replaced his.
I restored my ipod and that did not help at all. I just lost all my apps and music. Does any one have any tips to make this work? THANKS so much

Also, you should reset your network settings on your touch. I'm not sure what prompted you to restore your iPod, but if you want your music and apps back, you need to sync the touch with your library.

Not able to use software-update but still connected to the internet

Hi there , I am currently on 10.5.6 but did this upgrade manually. When I tried to use Software-Update it gave me : Cannot contact the update server. I am connected through Airport Extreme with my Macbook. My IMac is also on this Airport Express and is working fine (Included SoftwareUpdate).
However I can work on the internet and use Email with my Macbook.
Itunes is also not able to conect and my widgets are also not working.
Like I said: On my Imac everything works fine.
Can anyone help?? please

There are several things to try.
First check what is installed. Go to Safari's Help menu and select Installed Plug-Ins. If you see this
application/x-java-applet;version=1.3.1
then it is installed and the banking website is not interpreting it correctly.
Next, go to Safari Preferences, click Advanced, and select "show develop menu in menu bar". Go to the website and then, from Safari's newly enabled Develop menu, select User Agent > some other version of Safari. You can actually select whatever you want - perhaps the banking website is checking your browswer for compatibility.
If this doesn't work, download and install another browser such as Firefox or Chrome. Try the banking website with one of them. If it works then either continue to use it, or tell the bank to fix its problem with Safari.

My iPhone 3GS won't connect to the internet.

I updated my iPhone just now to iOS 5.1 and now it won't connect to the internet/apps via 3G; I also cannot retrieve mail. My messages are now also sending as normal SMS and not iMessage please help.

Itunes 8 won't connect to the internet. Connection is live

I recently upgraded to version 8 and now it won't connect to the internet. I ran diagnostics and my connection is ok but itunes won't connect. It says that the connection timed out but it pops that message up instantly so it doesn't even have a chance to connect or time out. Any help? I don't want to have to lose all my settings by uninstalling if I don't have to.

The #1 cluprit for no iTunes store connection after an upgrade is Norton.
Even though iTunes shows as being allowed in Norton, it really isn't for reasons we do not know. You have to go into Norton settings, take iTunes out, and put it back in the list. Also iTunes Helper. There are hundreds of posts about this in the itunes store forums.

IPod touch running IOS 5 won't connect to the Internet

I have just upated my iPod touch to IOS 5 and now it won't connect to the internet. I've tried to reset network settings in reset (general settings) but it doesn't work. Any solutions out there.
