Safari as a Power PC kind on Intel

Hi,
I was recently taking a look to see what was halting my Mac up so I opened Activity Monitor. There was Safari heavily eating away at my CPU, but what I noticed most was that under the "Kind" column, it said PowerPC. I thought this just looked a little bit strange and I was wondering if it should look like that and if I could get some clarification on it.
Also, when I am on facebook the videos are extremely choppy and slow and I have no idea why. They run fine in Firefox.
Thanks

I remember putting Safari in Rosetta mode a while back for some reason. Thanks for reminding me, it fixed all the problems!

  • What kind of Intel Core 2 Duo has the iMac 20" and 24" ?

    Hi,
I wanted to compare the Intel Core 2 Duo processors from the iMac with the ones available for Dell pcs.
I noticed that there are many kinds of Intel Core 2 Duo processors: E6400, E6600, etc.
I tried to search on apple.com if they had more specific information about the kind of Core 2 Duo but couldn't find it anywhere.
    Can anybody tell me ?
    Cheers! cj.

Apple uses the mobile version of Core 2 Duo in the iMacs. They only use the 1.83 to 2.33 GHz versions.
    This is from the Wikipedia;
    Merom
Merom, the first mobile version of the Core 2, was officially released on July 27, 2006 but quietly began shipping to PC manufacturers in mid-July alongside Conroe.[5][6] Merom is Intel's premier line of mobile processors, with largely the same features as Conroe but with more emphasis on low power consumption to enhance notebook battery life. Intel has claimed that Merom will provide 20% more performance yet maintain the same battery life as the Yonah-based Core Duo. Merom will be the first Intel mobile processor to feature EM64T 64-bit extensions.
Intel has stated that the first version of Merom is drop-in compatible with the current Core Duo platform, requiring at most a BIOS update. It has the same thermal envelope and the same 667 MT/s bus rate.[7]
The Merom processors are labeled as the "T5x00" and "T7x00" Core 2 Duo models, with the T5200 clocked at 1.60 GHz, the T5500 clocked at 1.66 GHz, the T5600 clocked at 1.83 GHz, the T7200 clocked at 2.0 GHz, the T7400 clocked at 2.16 GHz, and the T7600 clocked at 2.33 GHz. The T5x00 models come with 2 MB of shared L2 cache, and the T7x00 models come with 4 MB of shared L2 cache.

Of course I can't throw it away since I get a message it's part of the sytem. I can show package contents and throw those away, but evidently not a good idea!!

  • Had CS4 on Power PC Mac (Non Intel) Now have new iMac and trying to install CS6 but won't accept serial number

Had CS4 on Power PC Mac (Non Intel) along with prior Photoshop versions. Now I have new iMac and trying to install CS6 but it won't accept my original serial number (Starts with PSW401, etc.).

I know what you are saying. I had purchased the CS5.5 upgrade, and a week later got the CS6 upgrade. I did this back in 2012. I had a old Mac Power PC which does not allow you to install CS5.5 or CS6 because it was not an intel processor. So even though I had the upgrades I never installed them. I waited until my old MAC died which it did this past weekend. And now that I have a new iMac I tried to install the new software. All of my past upgrades referenced my original Photoshop that was still resident on my old Mac. But since the install no longer has that reference because of the new computer, it will not accept any of my past serial numbers that it needs for the install.

  • What kind of Intel Chip

What kind of Intel chip is in the new MBP? The Penryn was in the last model, but no mention is given as to the chip in the new versions. The tech specs just say the newest Intel chips.

Does this article mean that the pros are only getting some of the Montevina benefits?

  • I just replaced the power supply in my Intel imac and now the screen is really really dark and I see the missing folder icon, what do I do?

The power supply in my Intel iMac went out (and smelled pretty burned) so I replced it and now when I start it up the display is so dark I can hardly see it and it shows the missing folder icon. Is it the inverter? Or if shine a flashlight on it and re-install the OS will changing the display settings maybe fix it?

Thanks for ur quick reply to my problem. I tried all of that with no results... I did notice tho that the lights next to and above my caps lock key and my num lk key are now flashing. They flash in unison three times then there is a two second pause then they flash three more times and this repeats. They may have been doing this before I tried this solution but I did not take notice until now... I was also wondering how I am supposed to know, after pressing f10 to enter bios, how I can tell if my new drive is being detected when my monitor will not function? Was pressing f10 supposed to possibly make the monitor turn on? In a last ditch effort to try and further identify the problem, I re installed my old drive. Before replacing it my computer would begin to boot then display a hard error that would not allow me to continue booting and run Windows. My display would still work but I could not run Windows. After re installing the drive the monitor will not turn on. I'm beginning to think that I have a bad monitor. Is there a way of testing this with out buying one? Where does the monitor connect to the mother board? I wonder if maybe its been jarred loose, although I highly doubt it, it may still be worth looking at. Thanks again for your advice.

  • I need to purchase a power cord for my intel based 27" iMac.  I have had it for almost 2 years, I don't have apple care and I don't want to take it in to the genius bar. I know it's the power cord and I just want to purchase one.

iMacs take generic power cords. If it fits into the back of the iMac and an electrical socket, it'll work.
    Good luck.

  • Internal power - what kind of molex plug do I have/need?

    Hi all!
A quick question that I haven't been able to find the answer to:
Like so many others, I recently lost the 1900XT graphics card in my 1st gen Mac Pro (it's toast).
I replaced it with a flashed PC card - the 4870 (1 Gig).
Since I have a flashed PC card, I guess I'm not totally confident that it will control it's own fan speed accurately, since it's not meant to run on a Mac, and I don't want to lose another card to excess heat (the card seems to get REALLY hot really quick, but I never paid much attention to how the air was coming from the 1900XT, so I don't have a good basis for comparison)
    So my question is two-fold:
    1. Do I have any reason for concern, or is a flashed card going to monitor it's own temperature fine, and adjust the fan accordingly?
    2. Is the extra PCI-slot fan I bought at a local PC shop necessary, or even compatible with my Mac Pro? It seems to have a huge molex connector (around 1 inch - the "old" kind apparently) while my Mac Pro seems to only have smaller molex... Do I need an adapter to put this thing in?
Can you tell I'm paranoid to lose another video card to heat? I don't have the $$ to do this again...
    Thanks for your help!

Why don't try the ThinkVantage System Update program to automatically look for drivers?
And have you installed the Intel graphics? If your machine has Nvidia Optimus you also need to install Nvidia driver.

  • Transfer content from old power imac to new intel imac

What are the dos and do nots when transferring the content from my 6 year old power imac to a new intel imac top of the range?
    Thanks, Tom

There are caveats migrating from PPC to Intel, I had no problems, but see Kappy's fine/detailed "A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs"...

  • Help needed to run a power Mac ap on Intel Mac.

Hi, I have a Davis Vantage Pro weather station that ran happily on my old Quicksilver Power Mac. Now I have upgraded to a Mac pro machine running Tiger, the 'Weatherlink' software won't work. Davis, a main player in scientific technologies have not upgraded their Mac software (unbelievably!)
Will Rosetta help here? .... or do I need to get a P.C?
    Hope someone can advise.
    Thanks
    Lunasa

PPC apps run transparently on Intel Macs, however, in your case it may be a matter of incompatibility. The software is simply not compatible with the current versions of OS X. This has nothing to do with Rosetta. You would have the same problem on your QuickSilver were you to upgrade to Tiger.
If you transferred the software using Migration Assistant, then try reinstalling the software on the Intel Mac (but first be sure you fully uninstall the transferred app.)

  • What kind of Intel chips does new MBP have?

...or even an iMac for that matter.
I tried to look at Intel website to try to identify both the codename and the processor type.
For example the best MBP processor you can get is the 2.8 GHz one and that might be either the Penryn 2.8 GHZ with L2 cache of 6144KB or the Merom one with the same frequency but with L2 cache of 4096 KB.
Also If that is the case both of the procs are rated Intel Core 2 Extreme (one is X7900 and the other is X9000). So if that's the case can we assume that the new MBPs can be fitted with intel core 2 extreme mobile procs?
Also the same story applies to the new iMac Intel 3.06 GHz...what kind of processor is that? best guess is that it is an E8400?
    Thanks.

    Hi Andrei,
Stefan...you're implying that the iMac uses a notebook proc? And yes i couldn't find the 3.06 GHz proc anywhere on Intel's website.
Follow the link I provided to the X9100.
The Intel iMacs were always based on Notebook technology ever since they came out.
Only exception is the usage of a 3.5" harddisk.
Mainly because of the integrated design of the iMacs and the need to have a decent cooling of the CPU and GPU made it a neccessity for Apple.
    Andrei
PS: Come to think of it, i think it's the PC side of me still talking and asking useless question like what core 2 duo quad extreme blah blah proc does it have... Still new to Mac world.
No need for explanations of your intentions to ask.
This is the place to ask and as you can see you usually get answers.
    Stefan

  • CSS websites distorted in Safari on early IMac 1.83 duo Intel

I have the oddest issue. A great many of the CSS coded websites that I view in Safari on my early Intel Imac, 1.83 duo, are rendered with bad spacing, alignment, etc. . ..basically the graphics 'break'. Theses same sites look fine in any other browser on this machine and they look fine in Safari on any other mac.
The only thing I've done to this machine was add memory some time ago. Any ideas?

    Hi,
Do you have a custom stylesheet set in Safari preferences > Advanced ?
If so, change that setting so none is selected.
If not, can you try logging into another user account on the same machine to see how that behaves? You can add an extra account via System Preferences > Accounts > \[+\] if you don't have another one.

  • Power pc g5 or intel imac with compressor

    This is my present computer:
    iMac 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo (2008 model)
4 gigs of 800 mhz ddr2 sdram (this is the max ram for this computer! )
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS 512 MB
Hard drive: 465 gig (I use mainly external drives for editing)
I use this mainly for video editing with final cut studio 2.
    Rendering in compressor takes forever!!!
A friend suggested I pick up a used G5 Power PC.
I found this one, here are the specs:
APPLE POWER MAC G5 PowerPC DUAL CORE (2 x 2 GHZ)
    System Mac OSX 10.5.8
    RAM 12 GB
1 Hard drive of 160 Gb
    Superdrive 16x CD/DVD/DL DVD (32x)
Video card NVIDIA GeForce 6600 (VRAM 256 Mb)
    3 open PCI-Express expansion slots.
    1x FireWire 800
    3x FireWire 400
    4x USB 1 and 2
    2x Ethernet Port
    2x Displays ports
Is this insanity or a smart move to move over to the older G5.
According to my friend, the older G5s are much better at processing video.
Is a dual 2 GHZ processor enough or would I need a 2.3 or 2.5?
OR is there another option that someone might be able to suggest?
Thank you so much for your advice
    Bill

I am fairly sure that the old G5 will not perform anywhere near as well as the Intel iMac.
I don't know what you are doing that "Takes forever" but there are some settings in Compressor, which if selected, will take many times longer without producing much of an improvement.
Can you give specific examples of exactly what you are doing and with which settings/presets etc. together with the time taken, so that we can determine whether it is excessive or not.

  • Is it possible to upgrade a Power Mac G5 to intel?

Is it possible to replace the motherboard and CPU of my Power Mac G5 with an Intel configuration? I don't care how much it costs, I just want to know.

Sorry no, well that is to say anything is possible, but while G5s & Mac Pros look similar outside, for about 3 times the cost of a Mac Pro you could convert it with a lot of work get it done.

  • Safari and Mapquest Power Usage

I have noticed that when I am using Safari and surfing through the Mapquest website, the power usage of Safari goes up to 90%. Anybody else noticing this?

I get about 40-45% CPU load here. I looked at the site's code, and it's abhorrent. The javascript is all over the place, malformed, and needs a total rewrite to even resemble something similar to reasonable (X)HTML.
