Safari auto deletes history after Quit

History is set to delete in one month (though I've tried "manually" as well). Every time I quit, the history plist is deleted from user/Library/Safari. When I open Safari immediately, I occasionally get the last item hanging around in the History list, but often times, nothing is there. Private Browsing is NOT on.
So far, I have:
Repaired permissions,
reset Safari,
trashed Safari (and Mail) prefs,
replaced Safari with a new download via Pacifist,
reinstalled the entire system from Reovery HD (actually may not have gone back far enough—not sure when the probelm really started, as I rarely quit Safari unless I restart the Mac).
I'm at a loss.
Can anyone offer some insight into the issue. Please, don't suggest restarting the computer, repairing permissions, deleting the prefs, or any of the other options I've already tried, Thanks!

D'oh! You are almost certainly right on this one. I'd just come back after a long slog through different startup options: Safe Mode start up didn't affect anything but signing in as a different admin cleared up the issue. And *checking prefs* it just so happens that Cookie.app reset its prefs with last update (Jan 31st). I didn't think to check it before. Perhaps resetting those options will solve this for good.
If Cookie isn't the culprit, it's probably the latest finderpop beta or something. Srsly, I have no luck with login items on Lion / Mountain Lion. I've had to remove FinderPop before.*headdesk*
Thanks for driving this point home (I'll never learn, seems like).

  • Stop Safari from resetting preferences after quitting

After installing Macafee, Safari will keep settings after quitting. I have uninstalled Macafee by using their uninstaller and the problem persists. The default apple homepage opening on Safari startup and is getting very old. Any ideas on how to stop this from happening?

Try deleting the password for that site...
Quit Safari. Now open Keychain Access. (Applications/Utilities). Select Passwords on the left.
Delete the keychain for that site.
Relaunch Safari. Navigate to the site. Enter your user name and password as usual. When prompted to save that data, click Never.

  • Can you auto delete history in safari

IIs there a setting to auto delete browsing history?

    Hi kfkoffe,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
If you would like to keep your browsing history private, you can use the Private Browsing feature in Safari. Please read over the attached article for information on using Private Browsing.
Turn Private Browsing on or off on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
Private Browsing protects your private information and blocks some websites from tracking your behavior. Safari won't remember the pages you visit, your search history, or your AutoFill information.

  • Safari auto-deletes all cookies

So periodically, every few days, Safari automatically deletes all my cookies. I don't want it to do this but I can't find a way to make it stop. It didn't use to happen, it seems to have started happening after an update, so is this normal, was this put in as a security feature, or is some problem afoot?

Since the last raft of updates, I have a problem where all sites I am usually always logged in with are logged out and the username and password no longer fill themselves in, until I re-enter them, and then it will work normally for a few days and then they all get lost again. In Safari Preferences, all cookies are still present, and are forms autofill URLs and keychain shows the site passwords too. Is this what you have?

  • Safari auto deletes web history

I just woke up and open Safari, and I didn't see my Frequently Visited area. I thought it was weird but continue with my day.
Then I see that my entire history is gone, and I didn't do it.
Now, every time I quit de app and relaunch it again my history is empty.
I already check for malware, although is hard to think that's the cause as yesterday I visit the usual pages on my computer.
Any one else has had this problem?

Open the Safari preferences window and select the General tab. What is the selection in the menu labeled Remove history items?

  • How can I set TB to auto delete emails after a certain period of time?

I have two email accounts set up in TB.. I am using TB 24.5.0, and one of the email accounts is a Gmail account, and the other is a Microsoft Exchange account with a domain I own running through Office 365. I suppose technically TB looks at that account like an IMAP, although it is not an IMAP per se.
In any event, I am coming to TB new from using Outlook 2010 and 2013. I would like to figure out a way to create rules for each of the email accounts that would automatically delete emails from my inbox after they are a certain age. I would also like to determine how I can establish a retention policy for emails I know I want to keep beyond their automatic purge time frame.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance!

This only works with IMAP accounts.

Select your account - Synchronization and Storage
Make sure to move any messages you want to keep to the Local Folders account prior to making changes. Local Folders should be set to keep messages forever.<br>

  • Safari Bug:  Tabs remain after quitting.

    Safari version 7.0
In System Preferences, General, I have "Close windows when quitting an application" selected.  When quiting Safari, tabs and windows are incorrectly restored from the previous session.  If Safari is closed by clicking the red X in the upper left hand corner, the tabs and windows are correctly not-restored from the previous session, that is, Safari opens fresh without the previous sessions tabs and windows.
I beleive this occured in Mountain Lion as well if I recall correctly.  If "Close windows when quitting an application" is selected, isn't this behavior incorrect?

If you have, "Close windows when quitting an application" selected then Safari should not restore open widows and tabs ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

  • Delete history/cookies on closing Safari

I can't be certain, but I seem to remember there was a setting in Safari for deleting history and cookies upon closing the application automatically. I can't seem to find that setting. It appears to me that the only way to do that now is manually at the end of each session.
The problem I am having is that each time I open Safari I have all the previous tabs from previous use opening if I haven't manually deleted their history before closing Safari on the previous use.
I know this works in Firefox, which I use frequently. I am using Safari to record online streaming audio via Audio Hijack and I sometimes end up with multiple tabs open and am getting multiple audio sources. Audio Hijack has a timer that opens and closes Safari, but no control over the history that is created in Safari.
I would appreciate some help if anyone is so inclinded. Thank you.

Old thread I know, but in regard to clearing cache and history on exit... that never has a good answer from what I have found.  Since there is no way in the app or with any extension I can find to do this, the only method I see is lock down the files it writes to.
First, open Safari and clear the history, the quit.
Delete the contents of ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Webpage Previews
In terminal remove write permisons (chmod a-w) on these files:
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Webpage Previews
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Caches*
    ~/Library/Safari/History.plist
Get info ~/Library/Safari/History.plist and check the box to make it locked.
Now Safari will show history while it's open, but can not write it out when you quit so it will not be saved, and the hundreds of megs of page preview caches will not be saved.
I haven't tested cookie blocking, but my assumption is you remove write and lock ~/Library/Cookies/com.apple.Safari.SafeBrowsing.binarycookies.

  • Safari keeps deleting my history on its own..

I'm on OS X Yosemite, with Safari fully updated. For some reason every few days I find that my history is suddenly deleted. I've set the "automatically delete history after" option to manually, and the only add-on i have is adblock. I've been using Yosemite since the beta started and haven't run into this issue since then. Any help?

  • I have set the Message History setting to delete messages after 30 days. Since doing this, Messages app is quite buggy.

I have no need to keep huge, old Messages conversations, so I recently set the Message History to delete messages after 30 days. Since doing this, however, I have noticed that the Messages app has become fairly buggy. Sometimes I'll open the app and it will look like there's no conversations, and the app prompts me to send a new message. Sometimes, I'll open the app to reply to an incoming message and my response will hang at 90% sent and then when I go back to the conversation list, it displays my outgoing, as-yet-unsent response as a new message, complete with little blue new message marker. The only way I have found to temporarily resolve these issues is to restart the phone. What's going on here?

    Hi,
According to your description, I understand that you need to apply a rule to delete messages older than 30 days for all mailboxes in your environment. Is it right? If I misunderstand, please point it out.
As all above suggestions, we can use retention tags and retention policies in Exchange 2013 to achieve it. To apply it, we can try the following steps:
    1. Login to Exchange Admin Center(EAC) in Exchange 2013 as an administrator.
    2. Click compliance management > retention tags.
    3. Click New Tag > applied automatically to entire mailbox(default).
    4. Edit the Name, Retention action and Retention period(30 days), then
    Save it.
    5. Click Retention Policies tab > New.
    6. Edit Name and add the Retention tags you created a moment ago. And
    Save it.
    7. Navigate to Recipients > Mailboxes.
    8. In the list view, use the Shift or Ctrl keys to select multiple mailboxes.
    9. In the details pane, click More options.
    10. Under Retention Policy, click Update.
    11. In Bulk Assign Retention Policy, select the retention policy you created to apply to the mailboxes, and then click
    Save.
    Hope it helps.

  • Safari 6: Remove History Items After One Day does nothing?

I don't like getting autocompletes from a million past sites, so I clear my history every so often. I prefer to do it manually, but Safari 6 deletes all the favicons--not just of the history but of your bookmarks too! Permanently. So I thought I'd try automatic history clearing instead: After One Day.
But three days later, the History menu still shows the full histories for the past 3 days.
Yet another bug I guess? Is this universal behavior?
I'm on Lion at the moment.

    HI Reuben,
Might be corrupted Safari preference files... try this.
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
from the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
    Quit Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Caches/Safari and delete all the sub-folders within that one.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete any of these files you have there:
    • Downloads.plist
    • History.plist
    • LastSession.plist

Repair disk permissions...

Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

Restart Safari

  • Safari keeps erasing my history after i close it!

I am using Safari 4.0 on Windows Vista and it keeps deleting my history after I close it. I do not have Public browsing turned on and my preferences aren't set to delete history.
    Please help!

You can't make it like this, you should create new account with english name, and log in it. Your current account folder (on disk) contains non-english symbols, and safari can't address it - by changing the name, you don't change folder name, so you should create new account and run Safari from it.

I have to force quit photoshop each time. All other buttons work exept when i try to delete history states in the history panel. Nothing happens when pushing the "delete current state" button.
