Safari auto-downloading previously view-only PDFs

Hi everyone,
Begrudgingly working my way through Lion's changes in the middle of a work-week.. Not the best use of my time, but oh well!
I have an issue with certain websites, where on Snow Leopard, clicking a PDF report of something would open a new Safari window with the PDF displayed.
On Lion, when I click the same PDF report it automatically downloads and then opens in Preview.
In this particular circumstance, I bounce back and forth between reports quite often, and would rather not have 30 or 40 downloaded PDFs in my downloads folder.
Does anyone know if there is a preference or a command I need to activate in order to "view-only" these PDFs rather than have them automatically download?
I looked in Preferences but did not see anything relating to what I am looking for.
Thank you in advance for your help.
CW

+1 on this.
I'm in process of writing a textbook chapter, and I would like to be able to view PDFs inside of Safari rather than having to navigate to the downloads folder, opening the file, deciding if I want to keep it, and then managing the file.  Was better in the previous version where the pdf would display inside the window and I could read the paper's abstract and then decide if I wanted to save it.

  • Create a view-only PDF

I need to create some view-only PDFs that cannot be printed, copied, forwarded, or saved electronically.  I see the security settings for printing, but I'm still able to save and forward the file.  Is there a way to do this?  I have Acrobat Standard 7.0.  Thank you.

You can do all with Acrobat security except the forward file. The save can be restricted, but that is only for changes. When a PDF is downloaded to view, it is one the machine (typically in the TEMP folder). If you want to restrict the use, then you are talking about an expensive solution with LiveCycle DRM type processes. Acrobat itself can not restrict the availability of the PDF. If that is of concern, then you either need to trust the user, not forward it, or use DRM.

How can I download and view a pdf with iphone?

If the PDF is an email attachment, you can view it by tapping on the attachment icon while you are viewing the email message. Another option is to set up a dropbox account and then use a computer to drop the PDF into your account. Install the iOS dropbox app and you can view PDFs there that way.

  • Auto download of photos and pdfs

I am setting up a page in iWeb to show some photo thumbnails. I am not using the iWeb Photo page but just placing the photos on the page. I have set up an HTML snippet so that when they click on the thumbnail the photo zooms open to full size. I would also like to have the option that if the user right clicks on the photo, it will automatically download. I also have some pdf files and would like to give the same option to download.
I've looked for a solution to this but haven't found any. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    David

If you set the full size image to open on a new page in a new window that is not included in the the navigation menu, viewers will be able to download it by control clicking.
You can create a download link in the Link Inspector by using"Link to: A File" and linking to a PDF or ZIP.
This is not the best way to do it as the file is loaded with the iWeb page and slows the page download in the browser - dramatically if the file is large!
Its better to upload a folder of your zipped files to your server and add a hyperlink - text or image - to each file on the webpage. Clicking this link will download the file to the viewer's desktop.

  • BESX SP3 MR6 - Email attachments are now ALWAYS Auto-download - not good with duplicate attachment names

Does anybody else see where email attachments are now always auto-download on all devices. The policy option was phased out in 5.0 but the default at that time was no (to auto-download). Now they all auto-download.
    1. PDF will not display because they must stay as attachment to render on Blackberry device. Says
“This attachment type cannot be viewed on your device”
    2. Phone messages attached as voicemail.wav - first one works, but since no longer the "Preview" option second says "Fielname exists - Rename?" Some devcies you can save and go back - others you can't.

Surely there's an expert on this forum who can help?

  • Can only download preview of some pdfs on iPad / iPhone

    Hello,
I have a strange problem with some pdf download links on my iPad and iPhone
and hope that somebody here has gone through that before and give me a hint.
    Problem description:
I have a problem when I try to dowload a pdf. If the pdf is linked with a normal
http-link, I have no problem opening it, it is shown in an extra tab in safari and
I can save it in iBooks. So far so good.
But: If the dowload is initiated with a command-button, then I only see a 1-page
preview of the pdf as an image. The image shows the first page of the pdf correctly
but I can find no way to download or save the complete pdf. If I save the preview
as an image, I see no content in this image afterwards, just a small text saying
    "pdf".
What I can do, is download this pdf with Safari on OS X 10.10 and on Windows
with any Internet Browser. Android is also no problem.
So I did a lot of research and testing:
    - I googled a lot and followed all related instrunctions I could find: no success.
    - I saved the pdf on my Mac, mailed it to myself and opened it on the iPhone or iPad.
No problem to view the pdf, it just wouldn't download.
    - So I enabled and disabled restrictions on all devices, with no success. I also added
the website to the trusted websites when enabling restrictions, no success.
    - I fiddled around with all safari-options, enabled and disabled cookies, switched
between "open in background"/"open in new tab" and tested all other options,
even those who shouldn't have any influence on this problem. No success.
    - Next I installed other apps capable of viewing PDFs since I thought them registering
as PDF-viewers could change this behavior. Again no success. (I tested Acrobat
    Reader and Amazon Kindle)
    - After that I installed Google Chrome: Only a slight change happend, now I saw
one and a half pages (instead of one) of the pdf as a preview.
    - Next I updated my iPhone 5 from iOS7 to iOS8.1.: No success.
    - I was so desperate after that, that I even resetted my iPhone to factory-defaults,
completly erasing all content and settings. Again no success.
    - After that I was running out of ideas.
    Technical background:
    - The pdf I'm trying to download contains confidental content so I unfortunately
cannot provide a link to it. But I know it's a dynamically created pdf, hence the
command-button instead of a normal link.
    - The pdf contains no forms and other fancy stuff, just plain (ok, formatted) text
    and some small icons.
    - I can easily download and view other (static) pdfs from the same website.
    - I have this problem on my iPhone 5 with iOS7 (latest version and iOS8.1 and
on my iPad2 with iOS7 (latest version).
    - It works well on my MacBook with OS X 10.10. and on Windows and Android.
    - I can view the pdf on iOS if I send it via Mail and open it locally, I just can't download it.
    - I think while searching for a solution I found a document saying something about
possible problems on iOS when providing download-links within html frames.
Unfortunately I could't find this document again but I checked and the download-
button indeed is embedded in a html frame (for what it's worth).
Any hints would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance,
    Wolfram

It looks as if your server does not support 'byte-range requests'. This facility is necessary for iOS devices (it involves calling for part of a file at a time rather than the whole file) so you will need to take this up with the people running your server. Note that this applies to the media files, not the feed.

  • Pdf files auto downloading.

My Macbook is currently auto downloading PDF files. I can't view them unless they're downloaded. I tried reinstalling adobe reader, and unchecking the open safe files after downloading. Its not working. How do I stop files from being auto downloaded?

I'm geussing you're using Safari as your internet browser? Try Firefox as a browser. It will allow you to view PDF documents in the browser itself, without downloading the document to your Download folder and it doesn't require Adobe to do so.

  • How to view aspx PDF files in Safari 4.0.3

    Hi,
Using Safari 4.0.3 on os 10.5.8. I'm trying to view PDF files that are supposed to be viewed and editable within the browser (this is how the site works on a pc using internet explorer). When I click the relevant icon on the site, the site asks me if I'm sure I want to view that file (this is normal), and I click accept. Then Safari simply downloads the aspx file into the downloads folder. To the extent I could open the aspx manually using Reader (I can't), it wouldn't help anyway because the file is meant to be edited within a web browser, and within the pdf there are options to "save," "save and close," etc. I need to be able to open and view this file from within Safari.
I have the latest Adobe reader and made sure the settings allowed for opening of PDFs from the internet.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks.

I concur with Kirk Olson1's comment above, and have been unable to solve this 'til reading this post.
Change the .aspx extension of a saved file to .pdf and presto, Preview opens the doc for reading without complaint. This may not solve the problem the user has with editing the file within their browser. But the .aspx file, without a doubt, is in fact a file of "some" sort that is readable by Preview. As to the properties of editing the file, I can't speak to that. Since I am using this to read and save my bank statement, I would hope that the ASPX file is a signed document that can't be edited without the change being detectable... otherwise, what purpose is served by introducing a new filename extension ASPX for PDF files???
I've had the same "Browser can't view/open ASPX file" problem under Mac OS 10.5.* and Safari and Firefox. A bank provides me with "PDF" files (so they say) that download (to view, or file-save-as) with the .aspx filename extension. Firefox 3.5.* doesn't handle them. I've not downloaded Adobe products to my Mac and have avoided doing so because I don't want Adobe mucking with the way Preview works, etc.
In an experiment, I am unable to coerce Preview to open a copy of the same file while it had the .aspx extension (via Ctrl-Click the aspx file, Open_With, Enable All Applications to Open). Preview just sits there without opening the file, no error dialog, and I don't see any telltale warnings in the console log either. The same file, with a filename extension changed, no problem opening and viewing.

Drag them to your iTunes library.  Download the free iBooks app.  Select the PDFs you want too sync in the iTunes books pane.  The iBooks app will show your books collection or your PDFs collection as you select.

Have you installed Adobe Reader and its associated plugin? AFAIK, that's the preferred if not the only way to open PDFs in an embedded view within Safari.

  • Inserting Multipage PDF for view only-

    Help!
I want to insert a three page PDF for view only.  I do not want this to open in a new window, I do not want this to download, I just want visitors to view the entire three pages vertically, or scrollable.
When I insert the PDF I only get the first page.  I haven't had any luck with the google docs iframe HTML stuff (but I am admittedly very bad at that and could be missing something).
I am not experienced, so please be clear and patient.
    Thanks!

Another simple way would be to split the 3 page pdf into 3 one page pdf files.  Then drag each pdf file onto the iWeb page, resize and postition as required.  They get converted into image files.  Not elegant but will do what you want.  You can even add a frame of some kind around them if desired like this one page PDF example: Add PDF

  • Why do I get black screen when trying to view a pdf in Safari?

I've re-installed the Adobe plug-in. I know a pdf is downloaded since I can save the black screen then open and actually view the pdf with Preview. So it's there but I can't view it.

The plugin is incompatible. Delete it and relaunch Safari.

  • HT1689 how do i view only downloaded podcasts

Is there a way in the podcast app to view only the episodes you have downloaded in a list no matter the station it's from?  I have auto download turned off, so I pick and choose the episodes I download from each station.

There is no longer a "is movie" option in this version. See screen shot. I only have the Any option and two random untitled album 2 and 1 option.

  • PDFs to auto-download to desktop?

Is there any setting that enables me to have any PDF links auto-download to desktop instead of them opening up within a new window or tab?
    Cheers

In the old versions of Safari, it used to allow you to save the PDF file by "Save as.." but they removed it. I think it is unforgivable that they don't allow you to save it.)
Another work around is simply "print" that PDF web page, and save the printed web page back into a PDF file! What a convoluted way to re-create another PDF file from an existing PDF file
That is, print the page, click "PDF" button in the lower-left corner in the print dialog, and select "Save as PDF..."
Apple software team, can you re-enable the "Save as..." button for PDF web page in your next version please?
