Safari back button goes back to Top Sites rather than search results
When I launch Safari, it begins at the Top Sites page. I use the unified search/URL bar to search something on Google. I click on one of the results and decide that's not the answer I wanted so I hit the back arrow in Safari to go back to the search results, but Safari doesn't do that. It skips the search I did and goes all the way back to Top Sites. The Google search never happened as far as Safari is concerned. What's going on?

Safari 6.0.4
Mac OS X 10.8.3
Do any search, either in the URL bar or by going to www.google.com (doesn't matter what you search for as the results are irrelevant). Once you're at the search results page, you'll see a cog wheel icon on the upper right. Looks like this:
This is the search settings button. Click it and navigate down to "Search Settings". Once at this page, look halfway down to find the "Google Instant Predictions" section. Change the option to "Never show Instant Results." Scroll all the way down and save your changes.
I'm betting with you... I think its the Focus on the User extension. Good luck.

After upgrading to 3.6.11 The back button sometimes goes back 2 pages, The Bookmarks window just flashes when trying to open it, when it does stays open if an item is selected that item is not opened, the item beneath it on say, my home page is opened. Your above posted system details show multiple Java Console extensions.<br />
You can uninstall (remove) the Java Console extensions, you do not need them to run Java applets.

The back button takes me back multiple pages, especially on Facebook

I Downloaded something onto my computer and now when I click onto safari yahoo pops up instead of top sites I know certain changes come along with downloading but if there is a way back to top sites and google as my search engine I need it!! I'm not one for change and I love the whole original display that the macs have to offer when you first get your mac so thats why I really want top sites back also it was great when your in and rush and so much easier!! Please HELP immediately this is urgent!!

Prevent Safari 5.1 from adding to Top Sites
Has anyone figured out a way to prevent Safari 5.1 from adding to Top Sites every time one looks at a webpage? I have used Macs for 20 years and love them, EXCEPT that Apple doesn't give much control to the user.
If, for some reason, you want to completely disable the Top Sites feature, use the following Terminal command copy and paste:
defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari5IncludeTopSites -bool FALSE
Repeating with TRUE at the end will enable Top Sites again.
I have not tested this, but you can try it, and report back on your success or failure.
Clear cache, clear history, reset and relaunch Safari.

Love Firefox but it's annoying that if I'm using a search engine (I use lots of subscription legal search databases), when I press the back button all the data I entered in the search boxes has disappeared. I'm sure Firefox didn't use to do that?

This advice will sound like a joke or prank, but believe me it worked on my iPhone 5 and my daughter's. The lens mechanism got stock on each of our iPhones. We found a post on these message boards that said to hold the iPhone about 6 inches above a table or counter top and drop it so that it lands flat on it's back. Now try the camera ...Fixed! It has been more than six months now and neither of our iPhones have ever experienced the problem again.

The Forward and Back buttons are dimmed and don't work, and "Search Bookmarks and History" is in the URL bar. Also, I sometimes find blank pages with "Search Bookmarks and History" in the URL bar after visiting some websites.

Gmail not loading after latest Safari update - the one with the Top Sites
After the latest Safari update - the one including the Top Sites feature - I can no longer open any messages in on gmail - it tells me that some of the features of gmail cannot be loaded due to problems with my connections. I can use other sites without any trouble, so I think that my connection is good. Also, when I try to use the older version of gmail, this doesn't work either. Has anyone else experienced a similar problem? Please help - this is very frustrating... Thanks in advance to everyone who will reply and offer an explanation and a possible solution.

Possible. One way to test is to go to the Finder. There, drag the Google folder to the desktop, then restart Safari. If that doesn't resolve the problem, return that folder to its original location. Then, try Safari from another User Account.
If necessary, you can create a User Account in System Preferences>Accounts. Log on to the other account and open Safari. If gmail works there, then the problem is specific to your regular user account. In that case, log-in to your regular user account. There, open Safari. Safari Menu>Reset Safari. Select "empty cache", and "clear history", then select "reset". Restart Safari and try gmail.
If it doesn't work in the other user account, then the problem is system-wide. If that's the case I'll post suggestions after you let me know what you discovered. -
Safari Preferences resets my homepage to "Top Sites"
Safari Preferences resets my homepage to "Top Sites" every time I turn on my computer. I would like to set my Homepage to my Yahoo mail page just once and have it stay at that setting. I have an OX S 10.9.5. I reset my preferences every time I turn on my computer but my choices aren't saved when I shut down my computer.
You installed "SearchMe" or some other malicious Safari extension.
From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Remove all extensions with the word "Spigot" in the description. If in doubt, remove all extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. -

For some unknown reason, my phone has decided to change my imessage reciever to my email rather than my actual mobile number and won't let me change it backHi, i have had this same problem a few times, but i think i found a solution.
Go into your setting to iMessage, disable it from your email, via logging out of it using your Apple iD
So now ita only your phone number on iMessage.
At first it wont work, but try turning it off and on, just give it abit of time until it registers that your number is able yo use iMessage.
Once you notice its working, just go back and log back into using your Apple iD

I switched from an iPhone to an LG g2, but now all my iMessages keep going to my old iPhone rather than the new one. I know the resolution to the problem is to turn off my iMessage, but I no longer have the iPhone because I sold it to the phone carrier. Question is how do I turn my iMessage off through a computer that is not a mac.

I have the same problem.. EXACTLY. . When phoning Apple Support they had trouble understanding my problem and couldnt find any type of solution. No one seems to take responsibility for GameCenter issues. The assistant escalated the problem but no one could find an answer. .

Safari. When going back on a web page, why does that page start at top?
Hi, new to Apple and macbooks etc, but bought a new Macbook Pro and very happy I am with it too.
However, one thing with Safari bothers me. When I am on eBay for instance and have scrolled halfway down a page, I then click a link that takes me to whatever, within the same tab. When I then want to return to the previous page, at the same point that i left it, i.e halfway down the page, when I do this it always opens at the top of the page and I have to scroll down again and find the place I was before.
Hope this makes sense and someone can answer why this happens or offer a solution to stop it from happening. (pretty sure it doesn't happen in firefox but I don't really use that now.)

Can you go back properly if you open the tab history via the right-click context menu or by holding down the left mouse button on the Back button?
You may need to reload your web page(s) and bypass the cache if you've made changes to files.
