Safari behavior with MPEG-4 compared with other browsers

Hi,
Generated a .mov file using Quicktime Broadcaster and iSight. Converted to MPEG-4 using Quicktime(Pro). The .mp4 file plays fine using Quicktime Player on both Windows and MacOSX. Uploaded the .mp4 file to a web server and had the following behavior:
Safari: displayed as a text file
Firefox(Mac): gave option to save or open after saving, recognized an MPEG-4 Movie file
Explorer6/7(Windows): Played fine using QT plugin
Firefox (Windows): gave option to save or open after saving
How can I change the Safari behavior to match Firefox or Explorer?
Colin

OPen mp4 in Quicktime. Save As QT movie (then has .mov extension). Safari and Firefox open with QT.
OR
use the correct html embed (object for IE) tags (see QT apple developer info) QT plays them fine.
To put a file for download, try zipping it (archive in Finder) then post a link to the zipped file. THe user then just has to unzip it to recover it (haven't tried this yet.

  • Safari 6 is running slowly compared to other browsers

    I have been having problems for several weeks with my brand new Macbook Pro (Retina Display).  I've been troubleshooting my internet connection for speed issues...turns out Safari runs very slow.  It pauses for long periods of time to load webpages.  I just downloaded Firefox 16 and it runs at blazing speeds comparitively!  I've checked forums, and some say to disable extensions.  The only extensions I use are Ad Block and 1 Password.  I can't disable the 1Pass, but have disabled the Ad Block.  Still having the same issues...
    I would like to keep Safari as my browser due to iCloud integration, but can't stand this slow operation.  Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    Thanks for this advice, seems that there must be an issue with my profile.  I ensured extensions are deleted on my user account.  For some reason, many webpages load slowly although speedtest.com shows that my download speeds are very fast.  I've been using Firefox a bit more since my last post and this browser is definitely running faster.
    Any ideas how I can purge and/or reinstall Safari?

    These "streaks" appear to be area of too high frequency scanning; they can be cleared by scrolling up and/or down.

    hello, maybe that's an issue with hardware acceleration - please try [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL|updating your graphics driver]], or in case this doesn't solve the issue or there is no new version available at the moment, disable hardware acceleration in the firefox ''menu [[Image:New Fx Menu]] > options > advanced > general''.

  • Can't click on certain options like log-out, that are usually located at the top of a website. They are frozen, and firefox doesn't allow me to click on them. It works fine with other browsers.

    For example, if when I use hotmail, I cannot click on the options that appear in the upper portion of the page. Example, "menu" "help" "log-out". Same thing happens to facebook, so i can't see my notifications, or log out. When i try to click on them, nothing happens. I tried using facebook and hotmail with other browsers, and it works fine. I don't understand why i can't click on certain things with firefox. I haven't recently made any changes to firefox, and it is the lastest version. I also tried uninstalling, and installing again, but it didn't fix the problem.

  • Homepage verizon yahoo has small size and print but ok with other browsers and other web sites ok

    The home page comes up reduced size with small print.Can not get it to change with minimize-maximize clicking.Works okay with other browsers. All other web pages ok including email.Using windows 7

    The Maximize/Restore button only changes the size of the Firefox window, not that of content on web pages.
    You may have accidentally zoomed out on that site, or the site may simply have smaller text than others.
    # To reset the zoom level, hold down the '''Ctrl''' key on your keyboard, then press '''0''' (the zero key).
    # To increase the zoom level, either hold down '''Ctrl''' and use the mouse wheel, or hold down '''Ctrl''' and press '''+'''

    Why can't I zoom in on text with my track-pad like I can with other browsers? I have a MacBook Pro. I used to be able to pinch and expand pages but now I can't. I have bad eye-sight and really enjoy and NEED this feature to be able to read most sites.

    Hi dwightfontenot-
    Some gestures have been removed in Firefox 4 and later.
    You can restore the zoom feature by changing the values of the related prefs on the about:config page.
    browser.gesture.pinch.in -> cmd_fullZoomReduce
    browser.gesture.pinch.in.shift -> cmd_fullZoomReset
    browser.gesture.pinch.out -> cmd_fullZoomEnlarge
    browser.gesture.pinch.out.shift -> cmd_fullZoomReset
    browser.gesture.pinch.latched -> false
    To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.
    If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.
    Use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
    Preferences that have been modified show as bold(user set).
    Preferences can be reset to the default or changed via the right-click context menu.

  • Proxy Server asking for username and password almost 6 times for every page I load, but the same doesn't happen with other browsers like chrome

    The same question keeps popping up again and again "The proxy moz-proxy://proxy.iitm.ac.in:3128 is requesting a username and password. The site says: "moz-proxy://proxy.iitm.ac.in:3128""
    Even after i give the right details, it asks me like 5 more times before it completely loads the page. Some times it happens only 2 times.
    With other browsers like chrome, it asks only in the beginning. it doesn't occur after that.
    This started occurring only recently. i upgraded to firefox 9.0 and it functioned properly for more than 12 hours before it started occuring. i tried downgrading back to 8.0.1 but the problem still continued.

    i'm afraid i need to use proxy settings to connect to internet. The settings are all fine because it used to work properly all this time. i specify the proxy address and the port, which is correct, i am very confident. it is so because the page actually loads on firefox, but not before it asks for my user name and password for it a lot of times, and for every page. for other browsers, it asks only in the beginning, that is, when i start the browser.
    i've put three pics here. under the first two settings, the third image showing the user name and password thingy popping up. this happens a lot of times for every page.

  • PC is blocked after doing a manual or automatic update of my anti-virus SW (VIPRE) when firefox is open. No issue with other browsers or is firefox is not active

    I just switched over to Mozilla Firefox letest version 3.6.13 (before I used Google Chrome). It's running fine BUT ....
    if firefox is open and at the same time there is an (automatic or manual) update of my anti-virus SW (I use VIPRE) the update is done but afterwards my PC is blocked. Looking to the running processes I see that "System Idle Process" takes 98%. I can't do anything else with my PC, it reacting VERY slowly. To stop it I have to END firefox using "ctl-alt-del". It makes me nervous.
    With other browsers (used IE and Google Chrome) or in case I dont use firefox there is no issue at all.

  • After recent upgrades Firefox prevents links in several websites from working whilst there is no such problem with other browsers - help please.

    Since a recent upgrade of Firefox links in several websites no longer work. They used to be fine and I loved Firefox. The problems do not exist with other browsers e.g. Internet Explorer, Google Chrome. More specifically, on talktalk.co.uk the links to news items do not work, nor do those to "My Account." On Barclays.co.uk the link to print my statement doesn't work - similarly on MBNA.com
    There are several suggested solutions around the internet but all are complex, none so far have worked and I don't see why I should need to carry out the suggested tweaks. Firefox used to be great - now it isn't. The problem seems to be with the upgrade. Please help me to get my Firefox to where it should be.

    Thank you but please don't waste any more time on this. I have done as I said I would - removed and re- installed Firefox, cleared all cookies and caches (CCleaner) - still doesn't work. As I said at the start, the problem is not confined to Talktalk - it applies to several other sites and links. The problem does not occur with Internet Explorer nor with Google Chrome so I am now using those.

    I can access the Chase Bank website and log in. I can only use bill pay with other browsers. I can access bill pay but after that if I manually put in the date to be paid since I can't use the calendar they have I can't get past verify

    Go into Settings, iCloud on your iPad & iPhone. Turn streaming on there. I did that when I first set up my phone & iPad & have not had any problems. It will only stream over new photos so take one on your phone & see what happens. I hope that works for you.

    It is very difficult to navigate on facebook via safari. The IPAD does not allow other browsers to download and use it almost prevents the facebook app and the lack of scrolling the page.

    I also have problems with Facebook on my iPad 2. I don't do a lot with Facebook and generally only post on my feed page. Sometimes hitting return on the keyboard enters the comment, sometimes not. Sometimes the comment will show on my iPad but if I revisit that page I find that the comment has disappeared. So I'd say that Facebook and my iPad are not totally compatible with each other.
    I looked into Friendly and was about to purchase this free ap. But before I did I went to the Friendly web page for more info. There I found a page with users comments. One after another users complained about bugs with Friendly. The developers claimed a fix was coming but the user comments complained about the lack of response and support. One of the fixes suggested by the developers was to log out of Friendly then log back in. One user complained that doing this three times in ten minutes was not very helpful. Because of this I decided to avoid Friendly.
    I did find a Facebook developed ap but it was for the iPhone. I presume that iPhone aps will work on the iPad but I'll wait until Facebook releases an iPad compatible ap. If there is an ap developed by Facebook for the iPad that I missed please let me know.

    It's been working great.  I did upgrade to Mavericks a few weeks ago. When I'm testing my site, now dreamweaver does not opening in safari on mac but still opens in other browsers.

    Thanks Nancy. Ok,  I just tried removing and then adding Safari (shutdown, restart)  and it still opens my top sites page in safari when I test.  It could be in the settings on Safari .  Here's a screen shot of my safari settings.

  • Photocast access with other browsers!

    Hi All,
    According to Apple when you create a Photocast you can veiw with any browser capable of reading RSS on Windows or Mac. Well on my Windows box I have tried Mozilla, Firefox and Exploder, with no luck. I use Firefox with the Wizz RSS extension to read RSS feeds all the time, but all these browsers give me an error:
    ================================================== ====
    We're Sorry
    The browser you are using does not support the display of Photocasts.
    You can view the photos in this Photocast with Safari RSS (included with Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger or later) or other photo-compatible RSS reader for Mac, Windows, and other operating systems. Copy the link below and bookmark or subscribe to it using your RSS reader so you can return to the photos in the future.
    http://web.mac.com/gunnerjoe/iPhoto/danica/index.rss
    ================================================== ====
    So, other than Safari what browser can you use? What have they done to the RSS to make it not display in Firefox?
    ===================================================
    Found this on MACOSHINTS:
    Subscribe to iPhoto 6 photocasts in Firefox via RSS
    Mon, Jan 23 '06 at 06:33AM • from: davemak
    You probably know that you can subscribe to an iPhoto 6 photocast even if you don't have iLife '06. If you use any of the more-recent versions of Safari (i.e., with RSS support), the link in the photocast announcement will work fine as is. But other browsers, even those with RSS support like Firefox, are taken to an error page. But fear not. The following procedure will allow Firefox users (even those on Windows, I think) to subscribe to an iPhoto 6 photocast:
    1. In Firefox, go to Bookmarks -> Manage Bookmarks..., and then choose File -> New Live Bookmark. ("Live Bookmarks" are Firefox's way of abstracting RSS.)
    2. Enter the photocast URL from the announcement, substituting web.mac.com for photocast.mac.com, e.g.:
    http://web.mac.com/sjobs/iPhoto/my-...ocast/index.rss
    3. The titles of the photocast images will then appear in a submenu, either on your toolbar (if that's where you added the bookmark), or in your bookmarks menu. Selecting the images by title will display those images in the browser.
    The key insight here is that photocast.mac.com is not the root of the actual RSS feed of the photocast. Instead, that server redirects Safari and iPhoto to the real RSS feed at web.mac.com. This corresponds to a folder under the top-level Web folder inside your iDisk, which contains the actual images and the index.rss file. Using the URL at web.mac.com allows other browsers that use the RSS standard to subscribe to the photocast.
    [robg adds: This was also discussed in this hint about customizing the iPhoto 6 photocasting announcement.]
    =========================================================
    The above idea lets you access the image, be it one at a time. Any other ideas how to make this work properly outside Safari?
    Any help appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Joe

    I had the same experience when I tried using Firefox. I could create a New Live Bookmark, and after I entered the info, a new folder appeared with an icon of the world. But there was no feed address next to it and when I clicked it, nothing happened.
    I did find this helpful article on alternative RSS readers for PC users:
    http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/macosxhints/2006/02/photocast/index.php
    However, this article recommends going into IPhoto and changing the automated Photocast Announcement. I do NOT recommend this. When I did it, and then reopened IPhoto, the menu option for Photocasting disappeared completely! I recommend taking the suggested announcement text and links to RSS feeders in this article, and making it a signature in your email program. Then when you are announcing your Photocast, you can simply choose that signature, rather than mess around with the inner workings of IPhoto.
