Safari Bookmarks All Gone

I just rebooted my G4 laptop cause it was acting slow. I have lost all my bookmarks in Sarari. I have a back up at home but I am traveling. Is there some place to look that I am not finding by searching for Bookmarks?
thanks
chris

I think Safari's own list is now stored in this file:
"/Users/yourname/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist"
Hate that! Wish it was a plain vanilla html file. If that file got messed up or lost or over-written, there is still a chance that much of what you need is here:
"/Users/yourname/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari"
When you open that folder you'll see a whole bunch of files with uninformative name, eg
84DCB8E3-5A0E-4161-9F06-5B5CAD6A0B09.webbookmark
If you double click the file it will take you to the web page. I have no idea what criteria determine what gets included in this cache.
If you open the folder, then do Command-F, use the criterion of Kind:Other and type Safari bookmark into the field many of the items will display an actual name. You can choose to view the search window in List View, which I find far more useful than the silly default of Groups.

  • Updated Safari 1.5.1: Bookmarks all gone!!

Was autonotified that 2 updates were available: Safari 1.5.1 and iTunes. After the installation, all my Safari bookmarks, bookmark menu, bookmark bar are gone and reset to what looks like a default list. I am running the latest LION release/version...
I know I can back up from my Time Machine by going to ~/Library/Safari/bookmarks.plist and restore.. however I can not locate the file???
I know that ~/Libray is hidden so I went to Finder and pressed option GO and library displayed... I then opened TIme Machine and attempted to find the bookmarks.plist under Safari on an older backed up copy and the file was not there... I am very confused.
Thanks in advance for any assistance

I finally found a backup of the bookmarks/plist in TM from 2 weeks ago and restored successfully... all the other TM backups did not have the file!!  I do not understand that at all...
So really 2 issues: why migrating to Safari 5.1.5 deleted the bookmarks inthe first place and then why the backups for the past 2 weeks did not contain the bookmarks file except for just one of the backups (the earliest one)...
    Thanks

  • New Firefox Very Slow Bookmarks all gone restore not working Can I get them back?

Woke up today to new firefox update installed. Now Firefox VERY slow & all of my Bookmarks are gone as well as Bookmarks Toolbar empty. IE runs fast like usual, but Firefox barely loading.
Tried Restore from available dates, but all come back unable to process.

Some of you will want to shoot me; Mozilla may yank this reply. BUT I had the same problem for about a week, struggled in vain, poured over the help section and got 3 replies to my posted question. Nothing, absolutely nothing worked.
Want to know what solution I finally came up with? '''''CHROME.'''''
It imported my precious bookmarks from IE and FF. I'm going to uninstall IE now and leave FF as an emergency backup browser which I don't expect to need anymore.

  • I updated my iPhone 4S to iOS 6 and lost all of my safari bookmarks. Any way to get them back?

I updated to the iOS 6 yesterday and just noticed all of my safari bookmarks are gone. I have an iPhone 4S running iOS 6, I use iCloud for backing up my phone. Any help is appreciated.

What were you syncing your contacts with? If you were not syncing them to a contact manager or cloud service as intended, you may have to purchase 3rd party software to try and extract what informaion there is from the backup.

  • My bookmarks have all gone!

All my safari bookmarks have gone!
    I'm using Safari 3.0.4 on OS X 10.4.11
I've checked /Library/Safari and the Bookmarks.plist file is still there, I opened it in textedit and my bookmarks are in it but for some reason Safari is not displaying them.
The same problem has appeared on my other mac, I assume that this has been propagated by .Mac
I imported the plist file and copied the imported bookmarks from the import folder to the original locations which appears to have resolved the issue but I would like to know why this happened in the first place.

    Hi,
but I would like to know why this happened in the first place.
I think you've answered your own question:
The same problem has appeared on my other mac, I assume that this has been propagated by .Mac
It was probably caused by a fault in the .Mac syncing, rather than .Mac propagating a bad file.

  • Bookmark icons gone generic

All my Safari bookmarks have gone generic (dog-eared white rectangle). Some still work when Safari has been opend. When the app is closed, doubleclicking most marks begins to open the app but then it immediately closes.
Otherwise, Safari (2.0.3) is acting normally

  • After Software update, settings went default. all safari bookmarks gone!

I did the typical software update like usual and when I restarted my computer, all of my settings, bookmarks, menu bar, and other little things were all put back to default.
the reason I'm mad is because I had hundreds of important sites/pages bookmarked on safari and now they're all gone.
any chance I can revert to previous settings for everything? It took me forever to tweak the computer to the way I like it.
Could anybody give me a reason on why it would do this? I've had my macbook since may 2006 and its never done this after an update.
I think the updates were quicktime, battery and possibly security. there were three.
    thanks again.

Well, I do encounter similar problems as your ever since the update. If you had backup your safari bookmarks, perhaps you can restore your previous setting back (hopefully you did). If you didnt, I know of this software call CopycatX which is far more better that Backup (as it claims), not only duplicates all of your harddrive, but it does recovery as well.
For more information or trying its trial version if you like to over this site: http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=7.

  • How do I delete ALL Safari bookmarks?

I am currently using a MacBook Pro with OSX Lion 10.7.2 and Safari 5.1.2 and would like to know how to delete ALL Safari Bookmarks.
I have selected the various titles under Collections and selected all the bookmarks on the right and deleted these.  However, not that there is a Bookmarks section on the left just as there is a Collections section.  The bookmarks under this Bookmarks section are the one's I can't seem to delete all of without selecting each individually.  I believe these bookmarks might have been what was imported from my PC bookmarks when I converted.  However, I would like to be rid of them and there are a lot to remove.  It would be very nice if there were a less time consuming way to accomplish this task.  I've gone to find this plist file that I've seen mentioned in the support archives and I don't know if I don't understand the structure of Macs well enough but I can not find the plist to remove.
Please help!  I don't understand many acronyms and such that responses typically include so if you have a solution for me, please be very specific.
    Thanx

don't know if I don't understand the structure of Macs well enough but I can not find the plist to remove.
    Quit Safari.
Click a clear space on your Desktop. You'll see Finder top left corner of the screen.
From that menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type this in exactly as you see it here:   ~/Library/Safari
That will open a Finder window for you.
Move the Bookmarks.plist file to the Desktop.
    Relaunch Safari.
That should remove all the Bookmarks from Safari.
If you want to re import those Bookmarks at some point, with Safari open, from the menu bar click File > Import Bookmarks.
BTW... when you are searching the Finder there are two libraries. One is root the other is user.
The    ~ (Tilde) character represents user:   ~/Library
    No tilde:  /Library     is root

  • Safari bookmarks gone after OS X update

I just did the OS X update to 10.4.5 a few days ago and just noticed all of my Safari bookmarks are now gone. Any magical way to retrieve them?
    Would appreciate any assistance.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Very strange your bookmark file would be missing after the Update. Did a new bookmark file replace the old one (one way of telling would be the prompt about writing over an existing file when you moved the old file over)?
You've demonstrated the importance of having an external backup. Certainly has saved me time/energy on a number of occasions. What Backup program are you using? I use SuperDuper.

    Hi S Crawford,
I'm afraid it's likely that they're gone for good. To double check, go to http://bookmarks.mac.com and login to see if your bookmarks have synched to there.
If they are present there, check your sync settings in the System Preferences -> .Mac area to see if you can synch them back to the computer.
If they're not present there then they're gone...
If you want to backup the bookmarks manually in future, copy this file to a safe location:
    Hard drive -> Users -> Your username -> Library -> Safari -> Bookmarks.plist

  • Ran software update and now all my bookmarks are gone.

I ran a software update and when I opened Safari I noticed all my bookmarks are gone. I located the Bookmarks.plist and it shows nothing of my old (2 1/2 years worth of) bookmarks in it. Is there any way I can get them back or am I toast?
    Any help would be great.

    You may be toast.
Do you have any backups of your system, or at least your user library file?
Have you used Spotlight to search your system? The installer via Software Update updates the app, however leaves the Safari folder in the User Library alone. If for some reason you moved this folder, a new one would be created when you started up Safari after the update.
    Please post back.

  • IPad - Erase all Content, but Safari bookmarks are still there?!?! Why?

I want to erase everything on my iPad and start all over.  When going through the setup, I tell it to set up as a new device (not restore from iTunes/iCloud).  Most things are gone (apps, etc.) but my Safari bookmarks are still there?!?!?!  Am I doing something wrong?

You mostly likely signed into your icloud account after you restored your phone. Your bookmarks are stored on icloud and thats why there are there, because you signed into your icloud account.

  • Looking to back up/save all my Safari Bookmarks for later re-installation

    Hey Gang
Hope everyone had a nice Holiday Week End!
Well, looks like I'm gonna get a bigger Hard Drive, and so I'll be re-installing Tiger in the new Hard Drive.
I did get Book Dog, (whether that matters or not), and I'd like to get a few tips about saving, and then re-installing ALL my bookmark Folders (quite a few of them), for the fresh install of Tiger.
    Anybody got any ideas?
    Thank you
    Mike

I'm in complete agreement, Mike. I understood that you were moving to a new hard drive and want to do a fresh installation on the new drive. (My last post was a response to Barry, if that helps clarify anything. :-))
In fact, Rachel is correct, rather than EXPORT, (where I'll get a repeat of unwanted duplicated bookmarks from the fresh install), yes I'm only interested in the bookmark folders that I've saved (and they are plentiful), soooo I'll copy the /Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist - yes?
This is the Bookmark Folder File - yes?
The Bookmarks.plist file has all of your Safari Bookmarks: those in the Bookmarks Menu, the Bookmarks Bar, and anything you have in the Collections column as viewed when organizing your bookmarks (Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks), including any folders you have created inside those locations. So yes, moving that original file from your old hard drive to the correct location in your fresh OS X installation on your new hard drive will give your new Safari all of the bookmarks in your old Safari.

  • Hi apple user. I have lost all iPad safari bookmarks. Tried hold home button with sleep button but it doesn't get back my safari bookmarks. I also have reset without erasing my iPad data but still doesn't work. Help me get back my safari iPad bookmarks.

Hi, I have lost all iPad safari bookmarks. Have tried reset without erasing data and hold home and sleep button together but when go to safari all safari bookmarks still lost. Is there any case help me get back my iPad safari bookmarks ? Currently my safari is hanged, can't surf webs or anything. I saw the safari tab on iCloud is on, but I don't know using iCloud. Please help me get back my iPad safari bookmarks. I have contact Apple but could not set chat session. I have my Apple ID registered same with iCloud, also same during the time I have all iPad safari bookmarks lost. My iPad never synced on computer since I bought it with set at local store. Please help me get my iPad safari bookmarks back, thanks.

Hi, I quitted Safari and press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons silmutaneously unti the Ipad turn off and on with the logo Apple appears but it has hanged on and fixed to the point. I do it again hold the Home and Sleep buttons silmutaneously and the Ipad turn off and on again with the Apple logo but it still is hanged on the same point. I have do it a few more time, it still hanged to the same point for few hours with no change (like picture):
I think my Ipad is fault now. I guess I must connect it to the computer with itune, or something. So my case is this: at the moment everytime I hold the Home and Sleep buttons the Ipad always off and reappear with the Apple logo and be hanged on (like the pic), and I need restoring my Ipad Safari bookmarks... so I guess I need using Itune or something to get back the Ipad then using Icloud or blah. Please guide me for the step, Im not sure if connect to PC, if any that my Ipad data would lost, or is there anyway that I also can get back Ipad Safari Bookmarks after connecting to PC, also the how using Icloud. There is no Apple store or service store in my country so I think I must do it my self. Feel free to share your guide, thanks.
