Safari Bookmarks, Dock prefs, desktop pic, Finder prefs. ALL SELF-RESET!!!!

For some reason, I was using Safari and it quit. When this happened, all of the bookmarks, the finder settings, dock settings, everything was reset back to the original settings. It's just really annoying that the bookmark menu cleared itself back to its original setting.
Now...
I've read everything i can find on this...
I don't have File Vault activated, never was...
My Home Folder is still named what it was...
I didn't throw out anything, download anything, move anything...
Anyone have any ideas?
Andrew

If you truly didn't rename your home folder or have File Vault enabled and fail or accidently removed your home /Library/Preferences folder, then you have just had a vivid lesson in a fact of computer life--Things Fail. It is time to start a comprehensive backup strategy. Do a search here in Discussions on "backup" and you will find lots of good advice. If you had a good backup you could just put back those bookmarks and prefs... As it is just be glad you didn't lose any data. Without a backup it is just a matter of time before you do lose data. Hard drives fail or become corrupt, systems crash and corrupt files, CPUs go south, RAM goes bad and causes crashes and data corruption. There are so many possible accidents and disasters, from lightning strikes to goofy roommates, that living a computer life without a good backup is like driving a car without a seatbelt--while it won't keep accidents from happening it may well save you if you have one.

  • Getting iCloud Safari Bookmarks to sync successfully and consistently across all Windows OS on Parallels ?

    Hi there....
Does anyone know how to successfully sync your Safari Bookmarks for Mac on iCloud across all browsers and operating systems setup in Parallels software.
Currently when I open any of the Windows OS on Parallels they mess up my Mac bookmarks with duplicates and extra bookmarks and I have to go through the whole Timemachine restore bookmarks process to get them working again as I had them.
It would be great of anyone out there just had a fail safe step by step guide to getting my bookmarks to sync consistently across all devices, browsers and operating systems from OSX Mavericks to Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows 8.1
I have asked an Apple Expert previously about this but he couldn't figure out how to get this to work either.
Any comments or suggestions most welcome.
    Regards,
    Anthoy

Bump again! Nobody else has this issue?!

  • 10.3.9 to 10.4 Upgrade how do i take safari bookmarks & logic Prefs with me

    Hello All
Gonna be making the jump today to tiger finally, wanted to know where do i go in panther so i can take my bookmark settings for safari with me, also logic preferences if it is plausible to take those as well, and where do i put them once Tiger is installed?
I would be most thankful if there are any other things i should know about thanks for your help in advance.

I believe, you'll be OK if you use the Archive and Install method. Notice I said "I think," meaning go to the link shown above and read the manuals there. I've always upgraded using the Archive and install method and have never had to do what you're asking about.
That said, I have always done a BACK UP of ALL IMPORTANT PERSONAL DATA, including plugin/instrument presets, samples, and song templates.
My actual project/song files reside on a seperate drive.
It's a different story if you wipe the drive and then install. Here's a hint if you deice to do that: Make a note of the original location of each file, back it up, and put it in the corresponding location on your new "user profile."

  • Transfer Safari bookmarks to new MacBook Pro

I just got a new MB Pro yesterday and would like to transfer my bookmarks from my older SR MB. So I "exported" them to a jump drive and then transferred that file "Safari Bookmarks.html" to my new desktop. I then went into Safari and tried the "import" option. However, I get an message that says "can not import bookmarks. Unable to read any bookmarks in Safari Bookmarks.html.
I don't know why this process can't be simpler? I've had the same problems with Windows Bookmarks (Favorites) for years now. I did manage to drag the entire Safari Bookmarks folder on to the Bookmarks Bar, but all these bookmarks are in sub-folders under "Safari Bookmarks.html".

First of all, when I export my bookmarks, the produced is called "safari bookmarks.html". Moving this file as per the about directions did not make Safari use the new bookmark list. I then tried renaming the file to bookmarks.PLIST and that didn't help either. I must be doing something wrong. Is it necessary to reboot for the change to take effect?

  • Safari bookmarks sync out of step

    Hello all,
Recently upgraded to Mountain Lion, set up on iCloud etc and all is well bar one problem - my Safari bookmarks on my desktop (MacBook Pro), keep getting removed. My guess is that the bookmark list on my iPhone is being taken as the most up to date and so anythign that's been marked on my mac but doesn't appear on the iphone gets removed, iCloud sync wrongly thinking that I must have deleted it usign the iphone.
When I first set up, I kept getting a very old list of non-synced bookmarks as appeared on my iphone and were synced a while back manually. I managed to get that sorted by deleting them all off the iphone and re-importing a back-up onto the desktop, but now I've realised that any new bookmarks I add from desktop get removed within a couple of hours, presumably because they aren't on the iphone.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

First post here; trying to be helpful, but maybe my post belongs elsewhere?
Have been trying to determine exactly what the seemingly outdated links arise from. So I completely removed any iCloud synching from my Mac (Air 10.8.3), reset my iPhone and iPad (i.e., disconnecting safari (S) from icloud and saying to NOT save my bookmarks (BM) on the IOS device). As you'd expect, all bookmarks have been removed from my IOS devices. So I was solely working with the Air. I then started experimenting with adding additionl links to my BM bar. If I say to add a new bm, it goes onto the front of the list. I rarely want that so I immediately click on the BM icon and place the new BM in the order I want to see it. I then unclick the bm icon, Safari takes me back to the new bm (a reload), and I continue on. Sometime later, the new bm, sometimes along with other BMs I've added, gets back onto the front. Frustrating. Especially since, back when I had icloud synching turned on, what would go onto the IOS devices was the list with the new bm(s) in the front.
So I tried a different tack, Now, once I had reordered my BMs into the order I like, I exit S, then start up S again. Every time, the ordering stays in place. So I wonder if there's a cache S (or the Mac OS, or the 'stuff' intended for IOS or maybe icloud synching) uses, e.g., a 'shadow list'. And it's that list that doesn't get updated when editing the BMs upon exiting from the edit.
I know this is (perhaps) a long post, but what I've been doing consistently works. Perhaps it's also the case that whatever cache exists is rebuilt during S startup. In my initial testing, I turned on icloud synching after I'd setup my BMs the way I wanted (also exiting S and restarting - the restart doesn't matter BTW). The correctly ordered list showed up on my IOS devices. At this stage of testing, I've then immediately turned off S icloud synching. If my 'theory' is correct about there being some sort of cache and it's not updated until S exit (or rebuilt during S startup wold be my 'better' guess). more testing will show that up.
The 'fix' is my theory is true? Add the calls to update the cache upon S BM editing as well. At least that's the fix from my point of view. But then again, what do I know?

  • Why are Safari bookmarks taking the place of Firefox bookmarks on my Macbook.

I installed Mozilla Firefox on my Macbook. My Safari bookmarks have populated where my Firefox bookmarks should be and my Sync account exports no Firefox bookmarks. Can anyone help me with this problem? I have uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox. Still the Safari bookmarks and Sync is doing nothing.

As soon as I submitted this question, I noticed the Firefox bookmarks toolbar was suddenly populated my Safari bookmarks from my Macbook Air. The Sync account on my Mac had exported my Safari bookmarks to my Desktop PC. I freaked out and then restored my bookmarks from >Library>Import and Backup. I have close to 1000 bookmarks that I have saved. I am moving and need to pack away my PC and I will only have use of my Macbook. And I rely heavily on my Firefox bookmarks for research. Thank you anyone for helping me figure out why my Safari bookmarks have overrode my Firefox Sync account and toolbar.

  • Where are iPhoto library, iTunes, Safari bookmarks, desktop icons...?

When installing Leopard, my main internal "Macintosh HD" (where all my programs are loaded) didnt show as an option, so I installed on my secondary HD. Leopard runs OK from here, BUT, I cant find my iPhoto library, iTunes, Safari bookmarks, desktop icons, and the programs in the dock no longer show. Any advice?

Sadly, this is still an issue.
I guess plan A would be to find all the settings I am now missing and point the various programs to them. Though not sure how to do either of those things.
If this is difficult, then plan B is to "boot back into ...Tiger drive" and reload Leopard in drive bay 1 as originally intended. Again, not sure how to do that - and why it didnt work the first time.
Pls let me know if you think this is the right plan, and if so, what would the steps required look like.

  • How to find current desktop pic

    Hello all,
I have had the same desktop pic on my MacBook pro for quite some time, and am in the process of backing everything up on my laptop so that I can install Snow Leopard.
I cannot find my current desktop wallpaper (image) on my drive. I have went to system preferences and desktop/screensaver and it doesn't appear to be in with any of the previous or standard desktop images. Is there a way to find this image?? I do not know the file name but I would really like to save this pic.
    Thanks,
    Norm

While there may be a way to capture the image you still can see on
the desktop, most of the methods I can think of won't save it as an
equally high resolution as an original; and perhaps not as large.
Depending on what source the image was brought into the computer
from, and if it was via a User account or put into a system file, an
image could be hard to locate; if the original is still in the computer.
And I have (out of curiosity) looked into my system stuff for an image
I've added to the Desktop as a background; while knowing a duplicate
or an original was available in another location, or a source folder.
I've noticed at different times, usually after performing some levels
of maintenance where certain caches and other items throughout
the System are affected, that a personally selected folder or image
file that had been accessed and available from the System Prefs
Desktop & Screensaver control panel, is no longer found. However
since I usually bring images into my computer by Date, from my
digital cameras, I can go back to locate them in at least one place.
And have not been successful in finding a System location for a
lead on where to look for the image, apparently so orphaned.
You could try to get a screen shot, for later sight comparison in
your other user folders. And also if you happen to make a clone
of your complete system for later access, since it may save the
image as a desktop background so long as it was present at a
point in time when the Clone was made.
I've made clones and found the same screen background to be
very distracting when booted into a familiar scene. So I change
them eventually (for reference that I've booted from a clone.)
Perhaps someone who has gone searching their folders & files
for the source of a Desktop image currently presented may be
of help in re-tracing steps to find where your latent image is in
hiding; since you can't find the source image you first loaded.
Sorry to be of little/no help.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Safari bookmarks: where to find in Time Machine?

All of a sudden, my Safari bookmarks look weird: all bookmarks seem to be there, but all Folders, in which they had been gathered over the past years, are empty. In other words, I think I lost all the structure that the bookmarks had.
How can I find the old structure in Time Machine?
A related question: In Safari>Bookmarks I have on the left side two Headings: COLLECTIONS and BOOKMARKS. Under COLLECTIONS I find: History, Bookmarks Bar, Bookmarks Menu. Under BOOKMARKS I have, as mentioned above, hundreds of individual bookmarks. What is the differeance between Bookmarks  Menu and the Bookmarks? (I understand the funtion of the Bookmarks Bar).
I'd appreciate any pointers/solutions/help. Thanks in advance
    Veit

Quit Safari. Disable bookmark synchronization, if applicable.
Hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Go to Folder… from the Finder menu bar. Copy the following line into the text box that opens, then press return:
    ~/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist
Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the Finder window open. Relaunch Safari. Select File ▹ Import Bookmarks from the Safari menu bar. Import from the bookmarks file you moved to the Desktop. Test. If Safari now performs normally, you can delete the old bookmarks file and you're done.
Otherwise, quit Safari again and enter Time Machine. Scroll back to the last snapshot taken before the problem started. Restore the bookmarks file.

  • How to find my Safari bookmarks and passwords without opening safari?

    Hi!
I have a big big problem!
I had a system crash-thought I could recover via TimeMachine and oops there was an error and it turned out impossible. I had a clean install but my problem is that I really needed my old data- I can get it all from Time Machine as I can browse it just like as if I actually had the old system.
I copied the folder "default" from adium into the newly installed adium and there were all my contacts login details etc...
But I have no idea where to find my Safari bookmarks. I really need them. I also have trouble recalling some of my passwords which were remembered by Safari. Please tell me which files should I replace from the old system into the new system in order to retrieve my bookmarks. Thanks in advance for any help:)

    trelek2 wrote:
    That doesn't help.
why? Have you tried it? what happens?
    Where should I look?
    I need those bookmarks...
Copy the directory /Users/username/Library/Safari from the old disk to the corresponding location on the new one. The file with bookmarks is bookmarks.html from that directory.
However, I think Safari passwords are stored in the keychain. That would be in the directory
    /Users/username/Library/Keychains

  • How to delete a Safari bookmark in the Dock?

    Hi all,
Sometime over the course of the past day or so, either I or a family member visited a website that apparently put a Safari bookmark in my dock. At least that's what it looks like. I actually haven't clicked on it, since I didn't put it there.
The problem is, I can't figure out how to remove it. When I option-click on it, there's no option for removing it from the dock, like there is whenever I option-click one of the other icons.
Here's a screenshot of the icon. It's the little Safari icon next to the trash can.
And here's another that shows it's label:
Not sure how it got there. All I know is that when I opened up Safari this evening, a little movement -- like something moved to the download folder in the dock -- caught my eye, and when I looked down to the bottom right of the screen, I saw this icon in the dock. I didn't dare click on it, since I don't know if it's actually an app or something that shouldn't be on the computer. It doesn't appear that anything got downloaded. At least nothing new is in the download folder.
How do I get rid of this bookmark? As the graphic above shows, there's no option for "delete," and dragging it away from the dock doesn't work.

Try holding down the command key while clicking and hold it. Pull it away from the Dock until you see a puff of smoke.

  • Managed dock prefs

Hi I'm trying to apply different managed dock prefs for Macs in various labs. I created various docks on a client machine, uploaded them to the server, then set up groups for each lab and applied a managed dock to each group. I decided to modify the dock prefs, but for some reason the new changes are not applied to the client machines. I've tried deleting library/managed preferences, I've also tried removing the managed pref completely from the server, but it seems that the original once is still being applied.

Doh, solved it. Just in case anyone comes across anything similar, check dscl>Local>Defalt>ComputerGroups. I had a dock preference set in here that was overiding the new server prefs.

  • Safari Bookmarks Lost via Drag and Drop to Finder

All of my most important bookmarks vanished without a trace after I dragged and dropped their folder from the "Show All Bookmarks" screen in Safari 4.0.3 to a Shared Network Drive in the Finder sidebar. The Shared Network Drive was not connected at the time (I hadn't realized), but I received no error message that the bookmarks could not be copied to the destination--the folder and its contents were simply gone. I've scoured all drives for the bookmark files with no luck, and I confirmed that dragging other files (not bookmarks) to the disconnected Shared Network Drive gives an error message and no change to file locations.
Admittedly, this particular situation is somewhat rare, but it seems like a kind of shoddy black hole in the software: no alerts, no trash bin, no bookmark files to be found.
Obviously this is a perfect example of why one should backup bookmarks via Time Machine, MobileMe, etc.--but I really just want to understand the problem, and to see it resolved if necessary. Any ideas? Similar experiences?
    Thanks for reading!

Thanks very much for your reply, Carolyn.
I tried a Spotlight search as you suggested, but found no file called "Safari Bookmarks.html," and nothing with a similar name. Would that be some kind of master log of my Safari bookmarks?
I'm looking everywhere for an alternate record of those web addresses (router, cache, cookies, Google), but unfortunately I empty my Safari history regularly and nothing else has panned out so far.

  • Where would i find mail, safari bookmarks, etc?

im reinstalling maverick on another HD. where would i find my mail folder to drag and drop and also safari bookmarks? so i want have to start over compelety? thanks

One way to deal with the Safari Bookmarks is to open Safari and use the "Export Bookmarks..." item on the File menu. You can specify where to save them.
Mail is in Users > username > Library > Mail
Library is normally hidden in Finder. Use the Finder Go menu and hold down the Option key to see and click on Library. I've never tried copying the Mail folder and moving it to another machine, so there may be more to it than just the above folder.

You don't mention what you are using. If not the ATI 5770 or above, get one.
Replace the graphic card likely even as troubleshooting
    reset SMC
Make a current clone or two
Boot off clone or setup a clean new emergency system for maintenance
    Safe Boot
    Recovery Mode
Start a new 2nd TimeMachine (I swap out and use one about once a month for insurance)
Never used it and not endoring spending or using but TechTool Pro 7 does more testing
The fewer background goodies the better but monitoring temps, fans, memory are useful.
    Temperature Monitor, SmcFanControl 2.4+
I dont' think you need to be using ClamXav
A system performs better with less
New computer? maybe a new disk drive. Maybe more or swap out some or all FBDIMMs. Maybe just a clean system. Worse case, you updated from SL to Lion/ML and didn't do a clean break.
