Safari Bookmarks vanished

Did some updates on my iPad. Installed instapaper. came to Mac. there might have been a mobileMe sync. Safari bookmarks vanished. Nada. Seem gone from Me and from my Mac.
Are they backed up somewhere? HELP!

Here is my resolution:
1) MobileMe turned out to be worse than useless here - Instapaper install (stay away) screwed up the bookmarks (destroyed the bookmarks bar). The "sync" with MobileMe destroyed the version there. Then back to my Pro.
When I tried to "sync" with my iPhone (last vestige of bookmarks) - using USB connect to Pro -the "Sync" destroyed what was on the iPhone.
2) As it turns out, I had (until a week ago) been using Xmarks for Safari (recommend). So I had a version that was somewhat usable. Not willing to do another "sync" operation, I EXPORTED the bookmarks to HTML and imported them into Safari. Worked. Partial recovery. Then turned on the sync with Xmarks. Fine.
3) Then I had to PUSH the bookmarks back out to my iPad and iPhone.
4) Have disconnected the MobileMe "sync"
LESSONS:
"Sync" is not defined and should not let one source dominate without asking. A "merge" should be just that - even if it causes some redundancy.
The terms "backup" and "restore" on iTunes is EXTREMELY misleading.
Should say BACKUP OF SETTINGS and RESTORE TO FACTORY SETTINGS
Yes, I need to make sure my bookmarks are backed up (recommend using Xmarks - even if you use Time Machine). Frankly, I would think that Safari would carry an occasional backup - or let you set a backup period.
Or give/embed a script/task that will have certain items backed up (few files, not full backups).

Safari Bookmarks Lost via Drag and Drop to Finder

All of my most important bookmarks vanished without a trace after I dragged and dropped their folder from the "Show All Bookmarks" screen in Safari 4.0.3 to a Shared Network Drive in the Finder sidebar. The Shared Network Drive was not connected at the time (I hadn't realized), but I received no error message that the bookmarks could not be copied to the destination--the folder and its contents were simply gone. I've scoured all drives for the bookmark files with no luck, and I confirmed that dragging other files (not bookmarks) to the disconnected Shared Network Drive gives an error message and no change to file locations.
Admittedly, this particular situation is somewhat rare, but it seems like a kind of shoddy black hole in the software: no alerts, no trash bin, no bookmark files to be found.
Obviously this is a perfect example of why one should backup bookmarks via Time Machine, MobileMe, etc.--but I really just want to understand the problem, and to see it resolved if necessary. Any ideas? Similar experiences?

I tried a Spotlight search as you suggested, but found no file called "Safari Bookmarks.html," and nothing with a similar name. Would that be some kind of master log of my Safari bookmarks?
I'm looking everywhere for an alternate record of those web addresses (router, cache, cookies, Google), but unfortunately I empty my Safari history regularly and nothing else has panned out so far.

IPhone bookmarks vanished when syncing

I have an iPhone 3G. I went to sync it for the first time on my Mac OS X 10.5.8 using iTunes 10.1.1. When I did, all of Safari bookmarks in my phone vanished! My phone has never been backed up as it was my first time syncing it. Also my Apple insurance ran out. Is there any way of retrieving my iPhone bookmarks? Anyway of preventing this from happening again?

I use mobile me to syc my bookmarks from my Mac. You may need to go to I tunes on your Mac and go to preferences ANC make sure it is checked. You need to back up your I phone more often by the way.

How do I delete ALL Safari bookmarks?

I am currently using a MacBook Pro with OSX Lion 10.7.2 and Safari 5.1.2 and would like to know how to delete ALL Safari Bookmarks.
I have selected the various titles under Collections and selected all the bookmarks on the right and deleted these. However, not that there is a Bookmarks section on the left just as there is a Collections section. The bookmarks under this Bookmarks section are the one's I can't seem to delete all of without selecting each individually. I believe these bookmarks might have been what was imported from my PC bookmarks when I converted. However, I would like to be rid of them and there are a lot to remove. It would be very nice if there were a less time consuming way to accomplish this task. I've gone to find this plist file that I've seen mentioned in the support archives and I don't know if I don't understand the structure of Macs well enough but I can not find the plist to remove.
Please help! I don't understand many acronyms and such that responses typically include so if you have a solution for me, please be very specific.

Quit Safari.
Click a clear space on your Desktop. You'll see Finder top left corner of the screen.
From that menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type this in exactly as you see it here:   ~/Library/Safari
That will open a Finder window for you.
Move the Bookmarks.plist file to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari.
That should remove all the Bookmarks from Safari.
If you want to re import those Bookmarks at some point, with Safari open, from the menu bar click File > Import Bookmarks.
BTW... when you are searching the Finder there are two libraries. One is root the other is user.
The    ~ (Tilde) character represents user:   ~/Library
No tilde: /Library     is root

How to find my Safari bookmarks and passwords without opening safari?

I have a big big problem!
I had a system crash-thought I could recover via TimeMachine and oops there was an error and it turned out impossible. I had a clean install but my problem is that I really needed my old data- I can get it all from Time Machine as I can browse it just like as if I actually had the old system.
I copied the folder "default" from adium into the newly installed adium and there were all my contacts login details etc...
But I have no idea where to find my Safari bookmarks. I really need them. I also have trouble recalling some of my passwords which were remembered by Safari. Please tell me which files should I replace from the old system into the new system in order to retrieve my bookmarks. Thanks in advance for any help:)

Copy the directory /Users/username/Library/Safari from the old disk to the corresponding location on the new one. The file with bookmarks is bookmarks.html from that directory.
However, I think Safari passwords are stored in the keychain. That would be in the directory
/Users/username/Library/Keychains

Hi, I quitted Safari and press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons silmutaneously unti the Ipad turn off and on with the logo Apple appears but it has hanged on and fixed to the point. I do it again hold the Home and Sleep buttons silmutaneously and the Ipad turn off and on again with the Apple logo but it still is hanged on the same point. I think my Ipad is fault now. I guess I must connect it to the computer with itune, or something. So my case is this: at the moment everytime I hold the Home and Sleep buttons the Ipad always off and reappear with the Apple logo and be hanged on (like the pic), and I need restoring my Ipad Safari bookmarks... so I guess I need using Itune or something to get back the Ipad then using Icloud or blah. After upgrading to Yosemite web icons in Safari bookmarks have disappeared. Anybody know how to reset this?

The webpage icons database may be corrupted as a result of the upgrade.
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
~/Library/Safari/WebpageIcons.db
Click Go then move the WebpageIcons.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari.
It may take up to a day for your webpage icons to re populate.

Lost Safari Bookmarks on MacBook Pro after Sync with iPhone

I set up my iPhone to use MobileMe to sync with my two macs and other iphone (wife).
I lost all the Bookmarks on the computers within Safari.
1. What do I need to change to avoid this in the future?
2. Is there a place my Bookmarks have been automatically saved so I can restore? I have 'Time Capsule' and MobileMe.
If there is a way, can you explain?

Don't know why that happened, but Safari Bookmarks are stored in ~/Library/Safari/bookmarks.plist (the ~ is shorthand for your home folder). You can use Time Machine to restore them.

TS4001 How can I share Safari bookmarks between two iCloud accounts using IOS 7 and Mavericks?

Before iOS 7 and Mavericks, we were able to share Safari bookmarks between all of our devices. My wife had the primary iCloud account which was setup to share bookmarks, contacts, calendars and reminders. A secondary iCloud account was setup on my phone for only my email. Each phone had our private email accounts segregated and we shared all the bookmarks, contacts, calendars and reminders. When I saved a bookmark on my phone, I could see it later on our iMac or iPad. Now only my wife can sync bookmarks between her phone and the iMac or iPad. This *****!! This worked beautifully before we upgraded to the latest versions of OS & iOS. Is there a work around or a new way to set things up? I don't want to be stuck reading Safari on my phone when I have a 24" iMac sitting in the living room. I don't want to see all of my wife's email on my phone either. Do we need three iCloud accounts now? One main for sharing and two separate accounts for only email? Need help! Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

Thanks for the reply. That's how I set it up originally. Although the new iOS 7 update lost some functionality. I found the following on the TUAW website. The Safari Bookmarks and Find My Phone options have been removed from the secondary iCloud accounts options. This is the problem. Everything worked great before we updated. I guess "new way" consolidates the iCloud accounts better with Maverick? Now I will have extra documents on my phone that I don't need. We will both have to share the same iCloud storage and backup space too. Have to try it out and see how it works. Thanks.

FireWire cables are dirt cheap and that's how you should be doing the migration. You might have to start over, wiping the new machine's HD, and restoring the software as described in the Everything Mac manual that came with it. See Best Practices and Setup new Mac for more details.

How to sync Safari bookmarks to my iPad2?

I've had my iPad2 for a few months now, and I noticed that my iMac Safari bookmarks are more current than those on my iPad2, even though I think I'm set up for them to be kept current using iCloud. I use the cable to sync with iTunes on my iMac, and I've set it up to use iCloud storage. Obviously, I'm probably causing a conflict somehow, so please review how to ensure the iPad2 bookmarks are current with the iMac.

This generally worked for me (finally!), though I think there is still a tricky place where your bookmarks in Safari on the iPad "over-write" those on the iMac. I was expecting some type of merge where bookmarks that were different in either system would be added to the other, but that may be expecting too much.
I would also suggest two slight modifications/additions (though I have not thoroughly tested these):
In step 3 - press "Keep on my iPad" after you turn off Bookmarks
In step 5 - back in your iPad, leave Bookmarks "Off"
I am disappointed that the iPad user guide fails to adequately describe how this process works. If you have both an iPad and an iMac, syncing the bookmarks seems like a pretty important function to get right.

How to save Safari bookmarks when changing ownership and ID?

My wife has her own iPad which I tied to my ID and account. Now I would like to let her have her own account and ID. I hope to share a few things eventually with home sharing. I can use her iCloud email address to set up an account for her but am concerned about her Safari bookmarks which are not linked to my account. How might I set her up and safe her bookmarks?

How to delete a Safari bookmark in the Dock?

Hi all,
Sometime over the course of the past day or so, either I or a family member visited a website that apparently put a Safari bookmark in my dock. At least that's what it looks like. I actually haven't clicked on it, since I didn't put it there.
The problem is, I can't figure out how to remove it. When I option-click on it, there's no option for removing it from the dock, like there is whenever I option-click one of the other icons.
Here's a screenshot of the icon. It's the little Safari icon next to the trash can.
And here's another that shows it's label:
Not sure how it got there. All I know is that when I opened up Safari this evening, a little movement -- like something moved to the download folder in the dock -- caught my eye, and when I looked down to the bottom right of the screen, I saw this icon in the dock. I didn't dare click on it, since I don't know if it's actually an app or something that shouldn't be on the computer. It doesn't appear that anything got downloaded. At least nothing new is in the download folder.
How do I get rid of this bookmark? As the graphic above shows, there's no option for "delete," and dragging it away from the dock doesn't work.

Try holding down the command key while clicking and hold it. Pull it away from the Dock until you see a puff of smoke.

How can I get my iMac Firefox bookmarks into my iPad? When I sync my iPad it only moves the old Safari bookmarks.

My desk-top is an iMac G5. I use the Firefox brouser exclusively on it and have for a number of years. I now have an iPad [#1] but it only has Safari as a brouser. When I "Sync" my iPad with my iMac it brings my "old" Safari bookmarks list to the iPad. I cannot find a way to get my "everyday" Firefox bookmarks list into the iPad? What do I have to do??
