1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
Paste into the window of another application.
Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem. You may have installed a variant of the "VSearch" ad-injection malware. Follow Apple Support's instructions to remove it.
If you have trouble following those instructions, see below.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. This procedure works as of now, as far as I know. It may not work in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for a more recent discussion, or start a new one.
The VSearch malware tries to hide itself by varying the names of the files it installs. To remove it, you must first identify the naming pattern.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder named "LaunchDaemons" may open. Look inside it for two files with names of the form
              com.something.daemon.plist
    and
               com.something.helper.plist
Here something is a variable string of characters, which can be different in each case. So far it has always been a string of letters without punctuation, such as "cloud," "dot," "highway," "submarine," or "trusteddownloads." Sometimes it's a meaningless string such as "e8dec5ae7fc75c28" rather than a word. Sometimes the string is "apple," and then you must be especially careful not to delete the wrong files, because many built-in OS X files have similar names.
If you find these files, leave the LaunchDaemons folder open, and open the following folder in the same way:
    /Library/LaunchAgents
In this folder, there may be a file named
              com.something.agent.plist
where the string something is the same as before.

  • I have a macbook pro and i seem to have a bug or virus as mackeeper keeps propping up on me safari

i have a macbook pro and seem to have a bug/virus as mackeeper and other various websites keep popping up on my safari

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem. You may have installed a variant of the "VSearch" ad-injection malware.
Here something is a variable word, which can be different in each case. So far it has always been a string of letters without punctuation, such as "cloud," "dot," "highway," "submarine," or "trusteddownloads." Sometimes the word is "apple," and then you must be especially careful not to delete the wrong files, because many built-in OS X files have similar names.
If you find these files, leave the LaunchDaemons folder open, and open the following folder in the same way:
    /Library/LaunchAgents
In this folder, there may be a file named
              com.something.agent.plist
where the word something is the same as before.
If you feel confident that you've identified the above files, back up all data, then drag just those three files—nothing else—to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Close the Finder windows and restart the computer.
Don't delete the "LaunchAgents" or "LaunchDaemons" folder or anything else inside either one.
The malware is now permanently inactivated, as long as you never reinstall it. You can stop here if you like, or you can remove two remaining components for the sake of completeness.

  • Mountain Lion (10.8) and Safari bugs

    Hello,
I want to chime in and list the bugs in Safari since my install of Mac OS 10.8.0
Java does not function as it should. It's buggy and generates errors, stops on errors and wont load data from some websites correctly.
My main concern centres around my work place and our use of IP video cameras to record people coming and going. We login to individual camera's on occasion to check streaming. 10.6.x and Safari never failed at this but 10.8 and the new Safari will load the first few frames of a stream and then the stream will halt. Investigation has pointed towards Java and a possible Safari incompatibilty. Google Chrome and Opera have similar issues, FireFox on the other hand works as it should.
We also use FileMaker Pro 12 to display some of our camera feeds (custom WebViewer windows) for a receptionist, which work great under 10.6.8 and it's underlying WEB Kit engine. Mac OS 10.8 fails on this front, loading a few frames of live content, with the stream freezing there after. This does not affect the functionality of FileMaker just the the live streaming from our camera's.
Any input from other readers would be of assistance.
p.s. A quick trip to a Genius Bar was futile as the rep had no knowledge of Mountain Lion, Java or Safari...

  • Major Safari bug re: private browsing

Hi everyone, I'm encountering a major bug in Safari's private browsing mode. Basically, after you exit Safari, even if you close all previous tabs and use Settings to clear the cache, after you return again to Safari's private browsing mode it briefly flashes a screenshot/grab from random video content you viewed prior. There doesn't seem to be any way to clear this ... any suggestions? I just tried resetting all settings and that didn't work. Side question: does Safari's cache automatically clear after a certain point in time, i.e. 30 days after site visits and content gets stored? Many thanks in advance for all input!

    Same here!
I have ghost images which sometimes appear randomly when starting or returning to Safari. They last one or two seconds then go away. I can't really define a pattern but it happens quite frequently...
Tried clearing the cache and cookies but I didn't do anything as the problem still occurs.
Apparently this issue has been known for quite some time and everyone is waiting for it to be fixed.
See more here :  Safari on ipad2 ios7 does not clear cache or history properly
Come on. How hard can it be to ask iOS to delete ALL the files in a specific folder?

  • Mountain Lion Missing Report Safari Bugs Menu Item?

I recall a Bug reporting menu option in Safari which seems to have disappeared in the latest version in Mountain Lion. Or am I missing it?
Perhaps the Apple folks think Safari is now perfect. ;-)
I was trying to view photos of this Hilton
    http://www.hiltongrandvacations.com/Resorts.aspx#details/index&resortId=93&backF unctionality=0
by clicking the More Photos button, but clicking on Next arrow kept giving an error:
Could not extract width/height from image: http://multimedia.hiltongrandvacations.com/ws/ResortGallery/dynamicImage.cfm?id= 606&width=880&height=530. Traced measures: width:0px, height: 0px.
though the site and photos worked fine when I tried it in FireFox, etc. But, I could not find a way to report it to Apple from within SadFarI.
Is the Report button hidden somewhere in some other menu? Thanks.

  • Safari Bug: Look-up (dictionary) doesn't work after using Youtube on new 6.1 on mountain lion and the newest version for Mavericks

One of sever glitches that led me to "downgrade" back to mountain lion.  However, wasn't thinking and updated safari to 6.1 and I now have the same problem.  It took me a while to figure out, but now it is completely reproducible.  When I visit youtube and watch a video.  Safari's look-up, the three finger tap dictionary shortcut, no longer works.  It just highlights the word momentarily but never completes the function.
I'm going to restore my laptop again to factory setting and just not upgrade the software to the new Safari update.
The main issues/bugs I had with Mavericks, even after a clean install were:
    - pdf's very freezing while scrolling for a few seconds
    - frequent spinning pin wheels
    - other small random bugs I can't recall at the moment.
    Macbook Air mid 2012 i7 8g ram  256gbHD

Thanks, but the problem seems to show up only after extended use of the computer.Today, for example,I didn't go to work, and turned the PC on in the morning, and by early afternoon,it was getting more and more sluggish. It finally got so bad that it locked up,and even CTL-ALT-DEL wouldn't work.

  • Safari bug regarding "Website Data"

I've run into a bug with Safari on iOS 6 with my 4th generation iPad where performance noticeably degrades after a certain amount of time using Safari. It becomes noticeable when multiple tabs no longer hold their information so that when you go back to a tab it has to reload the site page data. This will occur even with just a two or three tabs. Another symptom, and the one that caught my attention first, is when scrolling up and down through pages images do not smoothly come into view but have to partially reload causing like a snapping movement as you scroll through images on the page. It's more noticeable the faster you scroll.
Those two symptoms seemed to point to a memory issue in Safari so I tried closing the app completely and restarting it with no success. I also tried restarting the iPad and still no success. All that was left that I could do was to try deleting "History" and "Cookies and Data" in Safari's settings. Again, no success. Then I went into "Advanced" on the same settings screen and under that option you have "Website Data" and the option to view and delete that data. So, I deleted all of it and shazam, success! Safari then worked smoothly with the fastest scrolling showing images and pages as they should when scrolling and many tabs then being able to be open without them being blanked out.
It's still apparently a memory issue though that is somehow tied into "Website Data," which is strange because that data is very tiny in size for all sites. The issue is not progressive in appearance as it activates randomly. In other words, one moment the browser is working just fine and then it isn't. It has nothing to do with how long you use Safari. It also doesn't have anything to do with the amount of "Website Data" but looks to be the data from specific sites since the bug will pop up with just a handful of site's in "Website Data" and at other times when there are a lot more sites listed.
Anyway, this bug has been reported to Apple Feedback and I just wanted to share it with the forum for others that are experiencing the same thing and have not been able to resolve the issue. The solution of deleting all "Website Data" is 100% repeatable and 100% resolves the issue. Safari performance is completely restored.

Just wanted to add that I have just reproduced the same issue when there was no "Website Data" stored. I closed Safari and then cleared history and cookies and data and it was back to normal, unlike the first time I encountered it when doing that did nothing until I deleted "Website Data." So there seems to be some connection in resolving the issue as "Website Data" may needs to deleted or empty to begin with before deleting history and cookies and data has any effect.
Again, it looks like some kind of memory issue affecting Safari that when doing the steps I described it releases memory in some way.

  • Safari bug while streaming

When I opened up safari and started to stream a video, when I touch 'done', there is a bug sometimes.
    ~Update
I reported the bug to apple.

Sorry - are you asking a question?

  • Safari bug report

I have the following Javascript alert in a Web page:
    alert(typeof document.responseApplet.getMol('mrv'));
When Firefox displays the page, the alert says, "string". When Safari displays the page, the alert says, "object". Safari is failing to acquire the correct type of the object from the applet. Clearly the applet is typing the object correctly, or Firefox would not display the type correctly, so the bug must be in Safari.
There is a simple workaround -- enclose the returned object in String() -- but it shouldn't be necessary.
    I'm using Safari 5.0.4.

Apple does not usually post or work these forums, you have to use the feedback option in Safari to report bug.
BUT, at least if others are having that issue, posting here also will let us know.
    Thanks for pointing out.

  • Safari bug? menu staying open

Using Spry Menu 1.6.1 and Safari 3.2.1, if the user's mouse
leaves the browser window while the menu is still open (there's a
half second closing delay by default), the menu will never close
until the user returns to hover on that menu item and then leaves
normally (ie. with the mouse staying within the page boundaries).
For example, on the sample page (
    http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/samples/menubar/MenuBarSample.html
)... if a user hovers to open a menu then quickly moves the mouse
off the side of the page (left side in this case), the menu will
    never close.
I filed a bug report but I was hoping there is a work-around
    for the time being.

I see. The menu has to be perfectly flush (or under) the
    window edge. I
would think it is a spry script issue as I cannot duplicate
    this with our
    menu at all:
    http://www.projectseven.com/products/menusystems/pmm2/carbon.htm
If I load the above page and scroll the window down so that
    the top menu bar
is abutting the top edge of the window, our closer function
    seems to be
    firing perfectly.
Good luck with your boss and if Adobe can't give you a fix,
    there are always
    alternatives :-)

  • Safari Bugs - Macbook Pro Retina 15"

I have the 15" Macbook Pro Retina, newest 2012 base model.  In Safari 6.0.2 (8536.26.17), I run into bugs that affect usability.
While entering text into online forums, discussion boards, Gmail, etc. text tends to disappear, stutter, or act funny, and when I go to delete my mistakes, the text reappears and basically wreaks havoc on my typing.  I have to close Safari and reopen it again for this to go away for a short time, and then it comes back again.
Some websites (Verge.com, Facebook.com,Gmail.com, etc.) stutter and lag while I scroll throught them, yet most websites are very fluid while scrolling.
There may be some other small bugs that aren't a big deal, but those two are the worst.  The newest Chrome unfortunately has really bad performance on the Macbook Pro Retina (even with GPU rendering forced), and Firefox also has terrible performance (and the stable version doesn't support Retina, althou

Besides happen the same problems with my MBP [same model as yours], there are also several moments when the mouse arrow disappears for a few seconds.
At first I thought it was my Wacom, but even with it disconnected, both problems remains, and is very annoying. Upsets too much.
P.S.: I took my MBP to an Apple Store [Eaton Centre, Toronto, ON, Canada], where the person who attended me, told the Safari issue can be solved with the next update. But why the mouse arrow disappear, he couldn't explain yet.
Doesn't have a month that I got my MBP and I'm already more than tired of this problem.
