Safari can't connect to server

Hi, I'm encountering an error when I try to access specific sites. Safari tells me "Safari can't connect to server". Some sites work fine and for others (that I was previously able to visit) it tells me Safari can't connect to the server. These same websites I'm also not able to open with FireFox (so I don't think it's Safari related). A previous post suggested checking if i had any proxies selected, which I don't. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Hi again Vera
I also created another account on this machine and the same page were also not able to load there.
Thanks for trying, the other account as I recommended.
Same results indicates a system wide issue. Check your router, with the update of the os 10.4.8, the firmware updates for said items are lagging behind.
It would work on your other machine because it does not run the same os.
Please note that this is for a firmware updates for routers
not your Mac, as otherwise suggested by Hope.
Here are three popular routers,
Airport Firmware updates
Linksys FirmWare
Netgear
Your feedback would be appreciated.Thanx

• Safari can't connect to server with parental controls on

I have one user with admin rights and one user plus guest with parental controls turned on. Recently when parental controls are turned on, I get 'safari can't connect to server' error. When I turn parental controls off again I can connect to the internet again. Why is this?

Hi and welcome....
Unfortunately, Parental Controls can only be enabled on a non admin account.
See if there's a proxy set up for Safari. From the Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Advanced tab. Click "Change Settings" next to: Proxies.
That will launch System Preferences / Network - Proxies.
If there are any boxes checked under: Select a protocol to configure, deselect the box then click Ok.
Quit Safari (Command + Q) then relaunch Safari.
See if Safari can connect in a parental controlled user account.

• Almost constant "Safari can't connect to server"

Starting a few weeks ago, I have started getting regular error messages that "safari can't connect to server". It is getting really annoying! It also affects Firefox. I have made every change I know to with internet settings (Open DNS settings, etc..), but nothing works. I have contacted my DSL ISP and they cannot find any problems with my service, which makes sense as I have had the service for nearly 2 years and this problem has just started recently. Oh yeah...I upgraded to 10.4.8 about the same time this started. ANY SUGGESTIONS?
Thanks in advance!

Update....after installing "Cocktail" system utility software and running all the systems, guess what??????
No more issues! I'm not sure if it was the combination of the re-install and then the system utilities run....but I am back to surfing the web with ease!
Thanks a million for your help!

• Safari can't connect to server problem (just one website)

After I upgraded my mac about a week ago, I can't open a particular website using my home wifi (Safari can't connect to server) It lets me open page but one, which happens to be my mail website. However, when I use a public wifi, I can open that website without any problem. Any ideas why this happens?

Linc.
I have been unable to connect to specific random favorite sites and tried your posts suggestion
"Boot into Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. While in Recovery, you'll have no access to your saved bookmarks or passwords, so make a note of those before you begin, if they're needed for the test.
Test. After testing, reboot as usual and post the results."
I was able to connect to all my unavailable sites. Can you help me discover what is preventing my access when not in Recovery mode. I Made the Safari preferences match the recovery mode Safari preferences so that doesn't seem to be the problem.
I ran EtreCheck

Wow, you are the best.
Yip this is what the website looks like. Great job Linc Davis.
Not surprised that the "Shop" tab is missing. Darn.
Well can you try to access it's "sister" website: astralmusic.com and astralmusicshop.com?
Since you are awesome with the "Flash" can you investigate if this website has a issue withis this "Flash" too?

• Safari can't connect to server, but is connected to the Internet

Occasionally I receive the message that "Safari can't connect to the server" for particular Web sites. I believe most of the time it occurs when I am trying to access a Web site that eventually asks for a secure login. In none of these cases has my Macbook Pro actually lost connection to the Internet because I can "surf" to all sorts of other Web sites immediately after receiving this message for a specific Web site.
In that context, does that mean that the specific Web site itself is "down" or is there some other issue with my Macbook Pro?

Hi there cornguy.rln,
You may want to try resetting Safari as an initial troubleshooting step. Take a look at the article below for more information. Note: While this information was is for Safari 6, it also applies to the current version of Safari 7.

• Safari "Can't connect to server" with parental controls enabled

Safari says "Can't connect to server" when my childrens' accounts have parental controls enabled. Is there a way to enable parental controls on the administer's account??

Hi and welcome....
Unfortunately, Parental Controls can only be enabled on a non admin account.
See if there's a proxy set up for Safari. From the Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Advanced tab. Click "Change Settings" next to: Proxies.
That will launch System Preferences / Network - Proxies.
If there are any boxes checked under: Select a protocol to configure, deselect the box then click Ok.
Quit Safari (Command + Q) then relaunch Safari.
See if Safari can connect in a parental controlled user account.

• Why Safari can't connect to server on iPad2?

All of a sudden Safari can't connect to the server on my iPad2. I'm a novice and don't understand some of the terms used in some answers when I searched this subject. It's becoming very frustrating. I've only had the iPad for 3 weeks. Thanks for any help.

Hey Nana1048,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing connectivity issues with your iPad 2. The following resource may help to resolve your issue:
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
1. Be sure you're in range of your Wi-Fi router (access point).
2. Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi off and on. If your W-Fi setting is dimmed, follow these steps.
3. Confirm that your Wi-Fi router and cable or DSL modem are connected to power, turned on, and connected to the Internet. If not, refer to your network administrator or Internet service provider (ISP) for assistance.
4. Restart your iOS device.
5. Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and locate the Wi-Fi network to which you're connected.
6. Tap and Forget this Network.
7. Try to connect to your desired Wi-Fi network.
Note: You may need to enter your Wi-Fi password again if your network requires one.
8. Turn your Wi-Fi router off and on. If your ISP also provides cable or phone service, check with them before attempting this step to avoid interruption of service.
9. Update your device to the latest version of software.
10. Update your Wi-Fi router to the latest firmware. For AirPort Base Stations, install updates using the AirPort Utility.
Wi-Fi disconnects or signal strength is less than expected
1. Move closer to the Wi-Fi router (access point).
2. Check for sources of potential interference.
3. Remove any case, stand, or other accessories from your iOS device and see if signal strength improves.
4. Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: This will reset all network settings including
- previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords
- recently used Bluetooth accessories
- VPN and APN settings
Thanks,
Matt M.

• WiFi connected but message from mail and Safari "can't connect to server"

My WiFi went down and rebooted. WiFi connected on iPhone, IPad and MacBook Pro. The iPad gives an error message from mail, Safari and other apps, "can't connect to server". What is wrong and how do i correct settings on the iPad?

• Safari can't connect to server... but Firefox can

When I open safari and click on any page, I get the message "Safari can’t open the page “http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/08/12/AR2005081201816. html?nav=rss_print/asection” because it could not connect to the server “www.washingtonpost.com”." However, the computer is connected and I can access RSS feeds via Safari. What could possibly cause this? BTW, I've done all the steps already; i.e. verify permission, etc ... All is good on that end.
Any ideas?

I just tried running Software Update (just in case) and I get this message from Software Update saying my computer isn't connected to the internet. That's wrong, I'm connected as I type. Network diagnostics come up fine and tells me I'm connected. The only thing I can thing is I just started an iDisk backup account yesterday and there are a bunch of addresses in the proxy part of system prefs/network/proxies.
But Firefox & Mail & all other internet apps work fine - except Safari & Software Update.
...the plot thickens...

• Safari can't connect to server on specific website

Safari accesses all other websites that I've been working on but for some reason it will not "connect to server" on EscambiaClerk.com. I've double checked on going to other County Clerk websites and there is no problem, but it is this specific website that will not connect. Is there anything that I can do to fix this? Maybe a setting that I need to adjust? My macbook pro runs off of OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 if that helps.

Two things to try:
1. Go to Safari (in the menu bar) / Clear History and WebSite Data ..
2. Type command, option , E (three keys together). This will clear caches, you won't see anything happen.

• Almost constant "Safari can't connect to server" PART 2

I spoke too soon! Just for a re-hash: I was getting almost constant "safari cannot connect to server" faults when I would try to call up a web page. I would have the same issue with Firefox. I am using a airport express router, wpa 2, on a Macbook 2ghz intel and a 20" Imac 2ghz intel. I set the Open DNS numbers, no help...I re-installed the 10.4.8 combo and then ran "Cocktail" to clear all caches and repair disk permissions and life was GOOD....for 24 hours. Now I am back to the same stuff! AAAARGHH! I have repaired permissions and cleared caches again, but no luck. Someone please help! The MAC allure is not going to last long if I have to get on my old PC to surf the web!

Sorry. You did say 24 hours. I was looking for something that might be configured inside your mac to "happen"...every day at "x'oclock".
Something that would coincide with your 24-hour observation.
Sorry to be so precise with my query.
Good luck

• Safari can't connect to server on only some applications (lumosity) and only under parental controls

Under parental controls with the "try to limit access to adult sites" selected, some sites (such as lumosity) give me the can't connect to Safari screen,
while others (facebook, twitter) give me a form to fill out screen, rather than the home page.
Other websites work just fine.
When I use my own login, all of the sites work just fine.

• HT6074 Safari can't connect to the server

I am connected to the internet but when I search I get error message "Safari can't connect to server"

Several ideas ...
Make sure the Firewall is turned off.
Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Firewall
If it's not a firewall issue, back to System Preferences > Network > Advanced > Proxies
Deselect any checked boxes on the left then quit and relaunch Safari to test.
Disable anti virus sofware if installed.

• Safari and Youtube can't connect to server

Safari and Youtube can't connect to server but I can use iTunes online store. Isn't that strange? Any ideas why?
I use static ip-adresses on my home network with a WEP 128bit security. I have entered all configuration that I enter under tcp/ip properties on my but there is one property on the touch that I don't recognise from my PC and that is someting that translated could be named "Search Domains". It's the last property under the static wireless config tab.

I have no idea what I am doing... but once i changed the proxy (HTTP) my life is just miserable, no sites open, like its really annoying. Do you know how to fix it.
