Safari can't play application/x-mplayer2 sounds

I use Safari to visit websites that run Nagios, a network management system. When something
is wrong, Nagios displays web pages that have an imbedded object that's of MIME type
"application/x-mplayer2". Safari displays a pop-up that says
Safari cannot find the Internet plug-in.
The page "Nagios" has a content of MIME type
"application/x-mplayer2". Because you don't have a
plug-in installed for this MIME type, this content
can't be displayed.
I can navigate directly to file .wav file and Safari (QuickTime?) plays the sound. I think
I need to get "application/x-mplayer2" added to the list of MIME types that the QuickTime
plug-in handles. Is there a way to do that?
I know that QuickTime has a System Preferences pane, with an "Advanced" tab with a
"MIME Settings" button. That doesn't help - it controls MIME types that QuickTime supports,
not the MIME types that the QuickTime plug-in supports.
Also, I had Window Media Player installed, but it gave "One or more arguments are not valid".

Assuming you already run OS 10.4.9 or above and have Quicktime 7.2, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:

In Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them).
Now repair permissions and restart.
The world should now be your oyster!
You should also have the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.

Repair permissions.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the menu bar, quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
If that didn't help, install the v10.5.8 combo update.

Where in Safari can I set applications?

Where in Safari can I set an application other than mail to use the mailto command?
In Firefox this is done in Preferences > Applications tab , scroll down t the mailto and change the application asigned to that function from Mail to Gmail causing mailto links on webpages to open gmail in a browser rather than using the Mail app.
I cannot find anything similar in Safari.

I don't want to change it system wide.
I only want to change it for Safari and I only want the change to apply to mailto links not other functions.
Sounds like Apple needs to work on the functionality a bit. I will submit a feature request through the form.

Safari and MIME type "application/x-mplayer2"

When trying to listen to web pages conatining mp3 audio files (prior to purchasing them) , Safari comes up with a message saying that MIME type “application/x-mplayer2” is not installed and only downloads the html file and not the mp3 file. When we check on our installed plug-ins in Safari, MIME type “application/x-mplayer2” has been installed.
How do we fix this? We are using Safari Version 2.0.2 (416.12) OSX 10.4.3. It works on one of our older machines running Safari Version 1.3.1 (v312.3.3) OSX 10.3.9

swf is flash, which that site has not implemented well.
These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3.0.4, QT 7.3 and OS 10.4.11.

Safari can't play video!

Hello, I'm from Singapore using an iPhone 3GS 3.1.3 without jailbreak. When I used my iPhone 3GS to go to Safari, I went to apple.com because I wanted to watch the iPhone 4 Keynote on my 3GS. Normally, we have to press on the play button on the video. But now, there is a slash on the play button? Can anyway help me with this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes. It is kinda a bit of a joke. I believe Apple has to put those videos in HTML5 for it to be viewable on the iPhone. They have been raving about HTML5 all along so it's a bit of a joke that this keynote stream is not available. If you watch their other videos on the site, it's perfectly ok. But to not be able to watch even ONE video from APPLE.COM on an Apple product is embarassing.

Can't play AAC 5.1 sound

I can't get my quicktime to play sound above stereo on qt .mov files. Whenever I select the sound out to 5.1 there's no movement on the graphical equilizer. I'm using Windows Vista and have a 7.1 creative sound card. How do I play QT mov in 5.1?

DTS files encoded as wavs could be played via optical (Diatonis eg) but i'm not aware of video files with DTS soundtracks - passthrough should be possible but may not be supported - bet we'll find out in time.

Qucktime and iTunes Can't Play 5.1 Surround Sound

So I undarstand qicktime is used to adjust iTunes audio and in the control panel of the qicktime there is an option for 5.1 sound. However when I click this option (5.1 sound) I still get stereo sound out of my two front speakers while other speakers remain quiet.
Does anyone know the way to fix this?
Oh and my WMP plays my music in full 5.1 surround sound so it's qicktime that's not working properly.

well a lot of stuff on HBO is 5.1 like true blood was, so if you have hbo on demand look for some true blood episodes, they should show (when you click on info) the DD logo. I can't think of much more other than the movie stations off the top of my head. I'll check tomorrow for some, and then you can try it, and if it doesn't work you can look at some of your settings on your revceiver. Randy was right - fios doesn't alter the sound that comes from the stations, so if it is delivered in 5.1 then you should get it.

Safari can't play QT stream files. Firefox can. Network config?

I posted this problem on the QT discussion but looking into it, it may be a networking problem. This Apple trouble shooting page:

does not display the QT logo in Safari but does in Firefox. All SW is at it's latest levels. The page says if the QT logo doesn't display "there may be a problem with the way your network is configured."
Currently I'm using a hardwire connection to a Siemens switch which goes to an AT&T Motorola DSL modem. Anyone know what changes to my modem might make QT streaming on Safari work?
FWIW, I can play streaming files over the internet in Firefox and directly using QT X and QT Pro players.

Epilog Redux:
I deleted the following files from ~/Library/Preferences and rebooted. The same content that was playing 56K version is now playing the 256k version. I have no idea if anything else is broken. YMMV

Safari Can't Play Video in External Monitor

There have been a couple of threads on here about this but few answers that work.
For some reason, Safari 5 will not play web videos on an external monitor regardless of whether it's on YouTube or any other site. It will play videos on my primary Macbook monitor but only shows a black screen on my external. Firefox and Chrome certainly do. I prefer to use Safari and would like to know if anyone has a fix for this other than telling us to use the other browsers.
As indicated in the signature to this post, I have the original black Macbook and am using Snow Leopard.

This is ridiculous. Video windows simply don't show up on many sites for me, i.e., MacMost. No problems in Firefox. I tried all the aforementioned solutions, trashed prefs, disabled extensions, repaired permissions, etc. No good. Safari is supposed to be THE superior browser. I hate the idea of going to Firefox, but I may have to. Safari isn't worth the grief. Any other solutions are wekcome.

Safari can't play streamed video properly.

Hello everyone.
The problem I am dealing with deals with any sort of video streamed from the internet from places like youtube. The video will not play UNLESS YOU HAVE THE MOUSE MOVING WITHIN THE VIDEO'S WINDOW. That includes both sound and video. I've tried IE and Firefox and they work without problems. If I need to give for info just leave a post asking what you need.

Ipod can't play the song normally /sound problem.

You have something blocking iTUnes store like a FIrewall, a pop up blocker in your browser or antivirus.
If you using the foxfire browser its causing the block, I have forgot the exact setting, but I do remeber there is one setting in that browser that causes this

Can't play / record sound on Yosemite with external Firewire audio interface

I've got a Focusrite Saffire PRO 24 Firewire audio device. It worked perfectly until I upgraded to Yosemite. Even upgrading the driver to the last version (which suports Yosemite) I can't play sound in any way. Garageband crashes when I try to play my projects. Youtube videos on a browser stay paused on 00:00...
Saffire pro 24 is detected. I can select it on System preferences or garageband settings. On Saffire Mix Control 3.5 I can see how audio inputs are ok, the input signal is received and the output is ok. According to Saffire Mix Control everything's fine, but I can't play audio nor record sound.
If I switch to internal audio device everything works perfectly.
I did some research and every time I try to play sound these errors are shown on the Console.

It looks like there's some problem with Airplay? I didn't even know what Airplay was until now but after looking for some information I don't understand what has Airplay to do with playing sound over firewire.
I tried to disable Airplay on System Preferences > Display. I removed com.apple.airplay.plist from Library/Preferences but the results are the same
Please a need help with this. It's getting really frustrating. I'm trying to get help from Focusrite support as well.

In case another poor man like me run into this issue, here's how I solved it:
First of all, I removed Saffire Mix Control entirely following this guide:

In addition to that I did this:
1. Mac HD > Library > Preferences > Audio and in there please delete the two preference files
2. Finder > Go > Hold down the "Alt" key and click on the library folder. In there please trash the file "com.apple.audiomidisetup.plist" (in case it exists)
Then I emptied the trash, restarted system and reinstalled Saffire Mix Control 3.5
Problem solved.
