Safari causes the CPU to jump to about 50%

on a lot of web pages. It's extremely irritating because the fans kick in and I have to wait for a good 7 minutes or so for them to quit spinning.
Predominantly, Safari only seems to do this when it's on a page with video, i.e. YouTube, or any site that has embedded video. I've looked at all my plug-ins and it seems that they're all Universal, so I've come here to see if I'm alone in this issue.
thanks.

Hi -
At first glance RAM seems sufficent. Have you tried Safari from another User Account to see if the same effect occurs?
New User Account - Here is guidance from Apple on how to set up the account. You can ignore step 7 in the article.
Also, on the system preference>Accounts panel, click on "log-in" options. There, select "fast user switching". This allows you to go back and forth between user accounts via an icon in your Menu Bar at the top of the computer screen.
Log-on to the new account and start Safari. Try a few video sites. If the fans are "silent" then the problem is specific to your regular user account. Otherwise, similar response means possibly a system-wide problem.

  • Querying v$lock table causes instance CPU to jump

Hi all. I run several queries to find out metrics on my Oracle instance for monitoring purposes. One of the queries I tried using to give me a PercentLockutilization is
    SELECT round(NVL((count(b.sid)/a.value)*100,0.0),3) "Pct Lock Utilization" FROM v$lock b, v$parameter a WHERE a.name = 'dml_locks' GROUP BY a.value
Everytime I run this query however, the CPu usage of the Oracle instance spikes about 10 percentage points. At this point I am assuming it is something with the query causing this but I am not sure what that is. My question is if there is a better query to use to get lock utilization stats via a SQL statement? Any and all help is appreciated.

You must be coming from a Sybase/SQL Server background :-)
Lock utilization is not an issue in Oracle since there are an infinite number of locks available, and most locks (or latches or enqueues) are held for only a very short period of time. Having said that, the jump in CPU is not surprising.
The v$ tables are all complex memory structures and not physical tables. It is very expensive to query them and also slows the system, since Oracle needs to aquire latches (lightweight locks) to prevent changes to these structures, and do a lot of memory manipulation to get at the values.

  • Safari eating the CPU and making fans race

Hi, having read some good posts on this forum re fans being continually on I opened activity monitor and found that Safari was using 90% of the CPU, so I quit it and relaunched and now the fans are barely audible.
Just wondering why Safari was the culprit in this instance when so many posts pointed to erroneous print processes and widgets?
    cheers
    Simon

I encountered this before using Safari 3.0. In other message boards a lot of people have been complaining about it as well.
It seems that in my case the problem is triggered when I visit sites that have Flash content in them. In those cases, I already left the page that has the animated content but Safari maintained its high CPU usage.
After doing the update to 3.1.1, the problem was gone with my MacBook.

  • In list view, duplicating a file causes the finder to jump to the top

I'm working on an iMac with Lion, connected to files on a Mac server and working in list view with a number of sub-folders expanded. When I duplicate a file, the list view jumps all the way to the top of the first folder. I then have to scroll back down to find where I was. Any suggestions?

    Hi,
I'm having the same problems in IE.
I've also changed the ChangeEventPolicy property on the iterator from "ppr" to "none".
And changed the content delivery property of the table to "immediate".
Still I have the same behaviour in IE.
In Firefox I don't have this problem.
    Anyone any suggestions?
    (I'm using JDeveloper 11.1.1.4.0).
    Thanks.

  • HT1212 Typing Chinese in Safari causes the phone crash

It happens a few times. I don't know what is wrong with it.
It happens after I update to iOS 7.1.

    try this
    RESET DEVICE
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the home button together until the apple logo appears (ignore the ON/OFF slider) then let both buttons go and wait for device to restart (no data will be lost).

  • Recently FireFox often has been causing 100% CPU usage and locks up until it finishes the process (various ones). Clearing cookies/cache didn't help. Any ideas?

    Windows 2000 SP4, 1g RAM, Firefox 9.0.1
We keep IE6 and Firefox open simultaneously for 2 different mail accounts. Firefox was always much faster even with 3 or 4 tabs open, but for the past couple of weeks when trying to update a screen the CPU suddenly goes to 100% usage and of course nothing will move until the particular process is finished. Closing one or more tabs does not help. If I close Firefox completely with Task Manager CPU usage goes back down to nil. After restarting Firefox CPU usage may or may not go back up depending upon whether it tries to continue the previous task that was locking it up.
It did not do this with Firefox 3.6 but then again it didn't happen immediately after updating to 9.0.1 either.

100% CPU usage occurred most often toward the end of the working day when busy trying to print on-line postage. We don't have any memory-consuming plugins but according to the knowledge base articles Firefox memory usage can gradually increase during the day even if you do nothing. It seems that may be the problem so we close and restart Firefox more often now as that usually fixes the problem. However, if we get stuck on a particular website update that causes the CPU to to go 100%, we can always start Firefox without previous tabs so the update will stop, or simply use a different browser until we have time to let the computer play games with itself.
So our workaround of restarting Firefox turns out to be the final solution (until we find something better - will post it if we do). Vic

  • When I switch between tabs the page jumps down about 20 lines. Why? And how do I stop this?

    I am running on Mac, OS X 10.9.1 .
When using Firefox if I switch between tabs or open a new tab from a link the page will jump down about 20 lines. This does not happen on all websites. Most notably on Facebook, but a bunch of other sites do it as well.
    Help would be nice.

  • Could Safari cause kernel panic?

I've had two kernel panics in two days, and both times I had Final Cut Pro running with Safari. The cause seems to be bad RAM ('Uncorrectable Fbd memory error detected' was in the log) but its an odd coincidence. FCP has been really stable and is a fresh install, but my Safari settings were migrated over from my G4 and it has about 4 years of bloated settings and bookmarks (it's nowhere near as snappy as the Safari in my clean account).
Even though it's probably bad RAM, could Safari be the culprit in actually setting off the kernel panic? Like a sharp spike in memory usage from opening a new page actually triggers it (like when Bill Bixby gets angry)?
    JK
    Mpro 2.66, G4 Dual 1g, 15" Powerbook 2.66, 3g iPod   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

One way of confirming bad RAM is to run the Apple Hardware Test from your Tiger Installer DVD. When you start-up from the DVD, you hold down the option key. Eventually, the Hardware Test icon appears. Select it. When fully loaded, select the "quick test". This will test the various components of your system, including the RAM.
I have doubts about Safari causing the kernel panics. Have you seen this Apple Knowledge Base article about Kernel Panics?
One way to speed up Safari, especially since you carried it over from another system, is to trash the Icon folder in your User Account>Library>Safari folder. This holds the site icons. Trashing it will reset the file. Initially, the small icons appearing in the address bar will revert to a blue dot. Over time, the favicons will start to appear as you visit various sites.
Another way to speed up Safari is to select "empty cache" in the Safari Menu.
Post back after you run the hardware test.

  • IMac using 100% of the CPU, but no processes in Activity Monitor show usage over 3%. What's going on?

This iMac is about 5 years old. It has the 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processors, 2GB RAM, and is running 10.8.5. After rebooting the machine, CPU usage is low. After about 30 seconds, when using Activity Monitor, CPU usage bumps up to 100% and stays there without budging. When viewing the CPU tab near the botom, % User is about 95+%, and % System makes up the other 5%. They change slightly every second. The problem is, if I sort my Processes by % CPU, the largest user is Activity Monitor with around 2.3%. Everything else is at 0.0%. So there's something weird going on causing the CPU to max out and run hot, but I can't figure out what's causing it. Checking for applications to force quit doesn't show any issues, and repairing permissions doesn't do anything. Is there any way to figure out what's going on? I read about how to reset the System Management Controller, is this something I should do? Thank you for ANY help, it's driving me crazy!
EDIT: I figured it out! Browsing All Processes, I'm running a folding@home program, but I thought I uninstalled it! The process is called FahCore_a4. Is there any way to prevent it from showing up on boot? I want to get rid of it but I deleted the applications!

Be certain to check that you are viewing "All Processes" as opposed to "My Processes"

  • One database using most of the CPU

    HI,
On one of our SQL server, the CPU was really high. I ran a query to find out which database was using most of the CPU. We have about 30 databases on that server.
Database 1 is using 90% of the CPU
    Database 2 3.5%
    Database 3 1.5%.
    etc...
The database 1 in our Intranet and i really don't understand why it's using all the CPU available. We have just a few people connected at once.
I'd like to know if there's any way to find out why that database is using all the CPU? Memory leak, bad code, etc...
    Thank you

---This first thing to check if CPU is at 100% is to look for parallel queries:
-- Tasks running in parallel (filtering out MARS requests below):
    select * from sys.dm_os_tasks as t
     where t.session_id in (
       select t1.session_id
        from sys.dm_os_tasks as t1
       group by t1.session_id
      having count(*) > 1
      and min(t1.request_id) = max(t1.request_id));
    -- Requests running in parallel:

  • VI causes high CPU load after several days of running

    Hello,
I have a strange problem. I have craeted a test bench control VI and it runs on five PCs, controling five test benches. All PCs have almost the same hardware, same motherboard, same CPU, etc.
Normaly the CPU load is around 50% when I run the VI, but at one PC the CPU load climbs up to 85% after several days (maybe one week) of continuous running and the PC is almost tied up - the VI execution becomes very slow (10 times slower) and the mouse only moves very slowly.
First I thought that the PC has a problem but the problem dissapears as soon as I stop and restart the VI!
I don't even have to terminate LabVIEW - only my VI and then everything is okay again.
The problem does not seem to occur at the other four PCs, but I can not tell for sure.
The task manager says only LabVIEW causes the CPU load - swap file utilisation is little.
Is there a way to analyze what causes the high CPU load?
    I Use LabVIEW 7.1 professional
Operating System: Win XP (SP 2 or 3 I don't remember)
    P.S. I have no loops without wait-functions.
    Greetings Johannes

Do all PCs have the same amount of RAM?
What is the memory use over time as seen by the windows taks manager. Does it increase gradually?
An increase in resource usage if often cause by sloppy programming.
Do you grow arrays forever or constantly resize arrays in memory? (built array, insert into array, delete from array)
Do you often create new references and never close them?
What does the program actually do? In my opinion, a constant 50% CPU load seems too high for my taste. It means it would not even be able to keep up on slightly older hardware.

  • Crio CPU usage jumping between 35% to 50% periodically

    Hi gents,
I have a Crio 9024, in my RT application, I have 2 processing loops, the first one run each 200 ms and the second one is a dynamic event loop running each 3s. So the CPU usage jumps from 35% to 50% each 3s to process the event is't normal ??? this kind of app can be harmful for crio'CPU or not ?
    Thanks

Your program is doing something extra every 3 seconds and CPU usage raises briefly every 3 seconds.

  • Mail and Safari (web content) hog the CPU

Ridiculous proportion of CPU is hogged by Mail and by Safari, causing sluggish performance of all applications
Never experienced this before upgrading to Mavericks.
    Any suggestions?

I have an update which seems to have worked for me - things were getting so bad, streaming audio was dropping out, so I had to do something.
I downloaded and ran the latest version of OnyX which told me I needed to repair my boot drive - this process took about an hour, then I cleared out pretty much everything using the OnyX Cleaner.
One of the things I have running is Little Snitch (mainly because I want to know what's being sent out from my machine).  When I rebooted for the final time, some Google app (ksurl) kept asking for permission to connect to Google.  I'd previously blocked this, but given all the problems I had with Safari, I decided to let it go this time.
Now, I don't know whether it was the reboots, OnyX cleaner, the boot parttition errors or Little Snitch, but I've been running for over four hours now, using Safari and Safari Web Content is constantly below 2% CPU, audio streaming is working without dropouts and overall everything seems to be much smoother.

  • What does the 'rtcli async executor process' process do on a Cisco ASA and why would it cause high CPU load?

I noticed that the CPU on our ASA had jumped from around %4 to 30% consistently a few weeks back.  The process below seems to be causing the load, but I can't find any information on what it does and how to resolve the issue.
    ASA# sh proc cpu-usage sorted non-zero
    PC         Thread       5Sec     1Min     5Min   Process
    0x08a24505   0x1bdb0124    25.4%    25.6%    25.6%   rtcli async executor process

    0x08a496d0   0x1bdbecf8     0.1%     0.1%     0.1%   Unicorn Admin Handler
    0x0866d56e   0x1bdafd1c     0.1%     0.1%     0.1%   ARP Thread
A little more background that has me concerned is that I have the exact time when the jump occurred.  Since that time, I've lost ssh access to the ASA and can only access it via Telnet internally or the ASDM.  I checked the certificates and a new one was generated exactly when the spike occurred.  I am unsure wether or not that was a system triggered certificate generation, or if I have a security issue I need to address.  Heartbleed maybe??
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry I wasn't clear, but when I was asking about "not a lot of traffic", I was wondering about actual  volume passing through the 2811.
When I asked about "kind of tunnels", I was wondering about how they are configured.  E.g. GRE or IPSec/GRE or VTI, encryption options, other tunnel interface options.
Perhaps the easiest way to check for fragmentation, is packet analyze the traffic passing through the 2811.

The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for the condition.
    Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or low voltage readings from the battery of a MacBook, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to:
☞ a buildup of dust on the logic board
    ☞ high ambient temperature
    ☞ a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
☞ the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That behavior may be normal for some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a fault. For more thorough hardware testing, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
    Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
    Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
    External display
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models while the lid is open may cause this issue. If applicable, test by closing the lid or disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.
