Safari Causing Dock to Glitch
Every time I open up a new safari page, my dock seems to want to open up a new application.. Or imitates that it is about to, as it starts to make space (icons start to shift left) but then it doesnt, and the icons move back. Its like a little glitch or shift of them if that makes sense everytime safari is loading.. Ever heard of this?
Ive tried clearing my cache, resetting it, and removing then redownloading it.. but nothing.
Please help.
HI,

Opening Safari causes Mac Mini to Crash & Restart
Every time I attempt to open Safari the dock icon bounces a couple of times, the computer then freezes and restarts. On restart it shows a grey screen that says "Your computer restarted because of a problem" or something like that. Can somebody let me know what is happening?

Could Safari cause kernel panic?
I've had two kernel panics in two days, and both times I had Final Cut Pro running with Safari. The cause seems to be bad RAM ('Uncorrectable Fbd memory error detected' was in the log) but its an odd coincidence. FCP has been really stable and is a fresh install, but my Safari settings were migrated over from my G4 and it has about 4 years of bloated settings and bookmarks (it's nowhere near as snappy as the Safari in my clean account).
Even though it's probably bad RAM, could Safari be the culprit in actually setting off the kernel panic? Like a sharp spike in memory usage from opening a new page actually triggers it (like when Bill Bixby gets angry)?
JK
Mpro 2.66, G4 Dual 1g, 15" Powerbook 2.66, 3g iPod Mac OS X (10.4.8)One way of confirming bad RAM is to run the Apple Hardware Test from your Tiger Installer DVD. When you start-up from the DVD, you hold down the option key. Eventually, the Hardware Test icon appears. Select it. When fully loaded, select the "quick test". This will test the various components of your system, including the RAM.
I have doubts about Safari causing the kernel panics. Have you seen this Apple Knowledge Base article about Kernel Panics?
One way to speed up Safari, especially since you carried it over from another system, is to trash the Icon folder in your User Account>Library>Safari folder. This holds the site icons. Trashing it will reset the file. Initially, the small icons appearing in the address bar will revert to a blue dot. Over time, the favicons will start to appear as you visit various sites.
Another way to speed up Safari is to select "empty cache" in the Safari Menu.
Post back after you run the hardware test. -
Hi
Macbook Pro 13, OS X 10.7.4, Safari (latest rev).
I have discovered that the "Add This" extension with Safari causes Gmail to disable buttons/links. Disabling "Add This" clears the problem. Needs fixing!
Thanks
PaulHi Paul,
MacBook Pro 15, OS X 10.8.5, Safari
Thanks for posting this information. I had been searching for a solution to this same problem and came across your post. I am not even sure how or why I got "Add This" in the first place but have deleted and problem solved.
Thanks,

When I installed Yosemite when I open safari my dock at the bottom disappears how do I get it back
when I installed Yosemite when I open safari my dock at the bottom disappears how do I get it back?
Use View -> Status bar ; and click on it so the tick/check mark appears.
Note in the next version firefox 4 the status bar is being replaced see [[What happened to the Status Bar?]], and if you want something similar you will then need to use an add-on. -
The fn/function key and Safari causing it to freeze! Help!!
Hi there, I'm a new user to Mac, just got my Macbook today. I have a problem with my safari. I was trying to group a few pictures together in a folder with the shift key but I accidentally pressed the "fn" key and some other key I'm not sure which and this has caused my safari to freeze, or rather when I click on any buttons or tabs it just gives me the error sound and it will not close. I've tried to restart or shut down my mac but it wouldn't let me because it says to shut down safari before I can shut down the Macbook. I've tried everything to try to shut it down but it can't because everytime I click on something on safar I just get the error sound! I can't even click to open a new window. I've been trying and trying and I dunno what is it that I did with the "fn" key thats made it this way! Please help! Thank you!
Force Quit Safari
Command-Option-Escape
-OR-
Apple Menu -> Force Quit
-OR-
Dock -> Option-Click -> Force Quit
If that does not work, then you can always power-off the Mac (NOT desirable, but sometimes it is needed, I just hope the Force Quit works). To power off, press and hold the power button for 5 to 10 seconds, and this will power off your Mac. -
For some reason, I was using Safari and it quit. When this happened, all of the bookmarks, the finder settings, dock settings, everything was reset back to the original settings. It's just really annoying that the bookmark menu cleared itself back to its original setting.
Now...
I've read everything i can find on this...
I don't have File Vault activated, never was...
My Home Folder is still named what it was...
I didn't throw out anything, download anything, move anything...
Anyone have any ideas?
AndrewIf you truly didn't rename your home folder or have File Vault enabled and fail or accidently removed your home /Library/Preferences folder, then you have just had a vivid lesson in a fact of computer life--Things Fail. It is time to start a comprehensive backup strategy. Do a search here in Discussions on "backup" and you will find lots of good advice. If you had a good backup you could just put back those bookmarks and prefs... As it is just be glad you didn't lose any data. Without a backup it is just a matter of time before you do lose data. Hard drives fail or become corrupt, systems crash and corrupt files, CPUs go south, RAM goes bad and causes crashes and data corruption. There are so many possible accidents and disasters, from lightning strikes to goofy roommates, that living a computer life without a good backup is like driving a car without a seatbelt--while it won't keep accidents from happening it may well save you if you have one.

Launching Safari Via Dock's Icon
I am a newbie to an iMac, but an experienced user of Power Macs, and find it very frustrating that as of yet I am not able to simply double click on the Safari icon on my iMac's Dock in order to get on the Internet. Every time I attempt to do so, a message crops up about Safari not being connected to the Internet and with the Diagnostics option a troubleshooting solution.
Instead, thus far my only method to connect is thru selecting Network under System Preferences, which seems a roundabout way of doing things. My previous usage of Internet Explorer with Power Macs enabled me to merely click on the desktop icon to get connected.
Is it because I am using a USB Dial-Up Modem that entrance to the Internet is not streamlined or is there some setting choice or some other obstacle preventing a breezy start-up?Hi,
Is it because I am using a USB Dial-Up Modem that entrance to the Internet is not streamlined
The sounds like the cause. Have you configured the modem (via System Preferences > Network) such that it will auto-connect when OS X attempts to connect to the internet?
Unfortunately, there's no way to configure internet access on a per-application basis, so you either auto-connect for everything that wants access or manually connect when you only want a certain application (such as Safari) to access the 'net.
You could probably create an AppleScript that will start the dial-up connection and then launch Safari to make things a bit more seamless for you. If that interests you, ask how to do this in the [AppleScript forum|http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=724]. -
Safari causing full-system hang
For a while now I've been getting the SBOD irregularly in Safari, since 3.x if I remember right. I've got some time off work at the minute so I'm finally looking into this properly, and here's what I've found:
There seems to be two separate conditions. The first happens on loading some, but not all web pages, causes a lengthy hang in which the entire system (even invoking Dashboard or Spaces) becomes unresponsive. In the console this accompanied by an entry similar to the following:
05/10/2010 08:15:47 /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari[242] ATS AutoActivation: Query timed out. (elapsed 5.0 seconds. params: queryString = {comapple_ats_namepostscript == "Helvetica-Neue" && kMDItemContentTypeTree != com.adobe.postscript-lwfn-font}, valueListAttrs = {<CFArray 0x6f5710 [0xa008dee0]>{type = immutable, count = 1, values = (
0 : <CFString 0xa01602c8 [0xa008dee0]>{contents = "kMDItemContentType"}
)}}, sortingAttrs = {<CFArray 0x6f5730 [0xa008dee0]>{type = immutable, count = 1, values = (
0 : <CFString 0xa01603a8 [0xa008dee0]>{contents = "kMDItemContentModificationDate"}
)}}, scopeList = {<CFArray 0x6f5750 [0xa008dee0]>{type = immutable, count = 1, values = (
0 : <CFString 0xa0161a98 [0xa008dee0]>{contents = "kMDQueryScopeComputer"}
(sometimes it names a font, sometimes the font name is "_")
I suspect this means some vestigial adobe product has messed my system right up. I used to use CS4 but have long since removed it. I also have Air and Flash (the current gala beta) installed. I have had fontbook validate Helvetica Neue and check all fonts for duplicates - if external disks are plugged in at this time they all spin up.
The other case is when downloading a file through clicking a link or alt-clicking a link (right-clicking a picture and saving it to the downloads folder does not cause this behaviour), and is accompanied by this much sparser line in the console:
05/10/2010 08:25:06 kernel disk0s2: I/O error.
The files themselves can be opened, moved and copied without incident and at regular speeds, so I doubt disk corruption. I've also performed a few full clone/restores on my boot disk with no effect. My initial thoughts were to blame a long-forgotten folder action that sorted downloads into different places (including a network share, if present), but disabling folder actions has not helped.
So, any ideas? I'm fresh out.A workaround for the font-problem seems to be to turn off ATS - it's in FontBook.
The second issue still eludes me.
Things I have tried:
Trashing ~/Library/Safari/
Trashing ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari*
Cleaning out every vestigial trace of anything suspect I had on my system (google keystone, logitech control centre, SIMBL, The Spark, iStat Menus, folder actions)
Interestingly, the issue is not present for the guest user, so it IS something wrong with my user account. I just can't figure out what.
Yes, making a brand new account would fix all this, providing I'm meticulous about testing the issue as I move /Users/Old/ into /Users/New/, but I'm kind of loathe to give up. It's surely something really simple! -

While researching the issue you are experiencing I found an article that I feel can help out in this situation.
It is called Safari: Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3230.
This section in particular
Manually uninstall third-party add-ons
If the software doesn't have an uninstall feature, quit Safari and try manually removing the third-party add-on files. These files are usually installed in one or more of the following locations:
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/

The Basic Troubleshooting Steps are:
Restart... Reset... Restore from Backup... Restore as New...
If you have tried all these Steps and you still have issues... Then a Visit to an Apple Store or AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) is the Next Step... Be sure to make an appointment first...

Safari causes my computer to run at 100% CPU Usage!
For the past few days Safari has been causing my CPU to run at high rates. This basically causes me not to be able to much while Safari drags and loads pages. I need a solution to this. I tried resetting Safari but that didn't work. Please help. Thank You.
My PC runs at high rates too. And I too like to use iTunes at the same time I use Safari.
And there's no quick solution to this...at least not yet. But here are few tips and tricks that you can apply to get this thing half solved.
1. First of all, if you don't intended to watch images while browsing, You can turn it off...Simply by going to 'Edit> Preferences> Apperance (Tab)' and from there deselect ' Display images when the page opens'
2. Secondly, Don't open too much tabs if it's not needed.
3. Thirdly, if you're using Safari for a few hours. Just try to close the whole window time to time. And after reopening get back to the last session (View) by selecting History> Reopen all windows from last session'
This will probably help you. Btw, these tricks are exclusives from me. Happy Surfing buddy! -
Need a way to get downloads option from safari on dock.
I accidentally deleted my downloads option for safari on my dock. It is also no longer in my finder. Is there a way for me to get it back?
Open a Finder window and see if Downloads is in the sidebar. If it is not, go to Finder Preferences and click Sidebar at the top of Preferences window to show it in the sidebar. Once you see it in the sidebar, right-click the Downloads (control - click or 2 finger tap on touchpad) and choose "Add to Dock."

Playing fullscreen QT movies in Leopard causes dock to appear in movie...
Strange bug...
If I play a movie in full screen in quicktime, after about 10 minutes the dock will mysteriously appear at the bottom. It's like I moved the mouse to the bottom of the screen -- but I didn't.
The only thing I can think is that the mosaic screensaver kicks on after 10 minutes, but somehow causes the dock to appear during the play of a Quicktime movie.
Any one else have this problem in Leopard?Same problem on newly installed Leopard - affects QT and is persistent. Never happened under Tiger so assume its a bug introduced as part of the OS upgrade. Annoyingly there is no way to let Apple know they have another bug to fix (aside from the kernel panics Leopard likes to go into...).
If anyone finds what's causing this before Apple get round to issuing a SW update please post.
Many thanks! -
Safari caused Kernel Panic?
Since the software updates last month I've constanly lost internet connection and have had to restart to get the browsers working again. Safari, FireFox, Camino, IE won't work but most of the functions of Netscape continue to work when this happens.
I use dsl.
Tossed the iTunes.pkg files.
Ran "Repair Permissions"
Did a hardware check with the install disk and everything checked out ok.
Finally stopped using Safari the last week and a half & have been trouble free until today. Using Safari again I got connection failure while searching for a site.
Did a restart and this time used IE & Camino to search. During a search the Camino page wasn't loading so I tried to stop it and then came the Kernel Panic.
This is the 3rd kernel panic I have had since the software updates and it's always happened when the browsers have a connection failure.
I am posting the panic.log, system.log & exited process.crash.log hoping someone who understands the language can help me figure out what's wrong.

The Symantec softwares are Norton Antivirus 9.0 & Firewall 3.1 which are set on auto protect.
I installed them a couple of years ago when I bought my iMac but have never had a problem with them.
Could I turn off auto protect to see if that helps or should I just uninstall them as you suggested.
Could their recent monthly update be the cause?
Can you tell me what "process ID (PID) is rather low" means.
Would you mind reading the additional info below that may confirm your suspicion?
Last night I was using IE to read my e-mail and Camino for craigslist. On Camino I went to the Houston Rockets site & tried to read the news articles. I was able to hit 2 links and then I lost connection. I could quit IE but Camino gave me the endless spinning ball.
Everything on my computer got sluggish.
Fortunately, I didn't suffer a Kernel Panic but I wasn't able to shut down from the menu and had to finally do a power shut down.
Today I ran Repair Permissons & just used Camino to check craigslist then my e-mail and saw your response. When I tried to get here to read your response I lost connection again and had to do a Restart.
I guess my problem isn't caused by Safari afterall.
Here is the panic.log for today & I see symantec is listed but I have no idea what that means. I couldn't find a panic log for last night.
