Safari causing heat and excessive fan use, had to switch to Chrome

Lately, every time I open Safari the computer heats up and the fan blows continuously. This doesn't happen for Chrome, so I've had to use Chrome exclusively lately.
In Activity Monitor, Safari Networking has an energy impact of 100 and Average Energy Impact of 77, which Safari has an Average Energy Impact of 162. Chrome is at 11.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Usually due to Safari extensions and or plug ins.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.

  • Powerbook 12 heat and constant fans

So apparently this is a common issue but there are not many threads on this and no solution at all.
I just wanted to ask other 12 inch Powerbook users.. are the fans on all the time (during basic tasks like web browsing) on your machine... and any solutions??

In response to both authors, mine does the same, but it doesn't stay on all the time. But it does happen say, if I put my laptop on a desk with no air to breathe in between the underside, or when I put it on the couch.
When used on my lap, which I shouldn't be doing, but anyway, it will vary.
What I've done to solve the problem is to buy a laptop cooler and it really does work. It actually works better than the PowerBook's internal fans because for one, it doesn't generate heat (when my fans are on, it's because of the heat issue, but at the same time, it seems to circulate the heat as well, making it an infinite loop-- pun intended!!).
And with the laptop cooler, yes those fans are on constantly, but the laptop does not heat up.
I first tried Targus's laptop cooler (via OfficeMax) but found it aesthetically unpleasing, even though it is similar in color (aluminum colored plastic).
The one I ended up buying was a Micro Innovations laptop cooler from RadioShack (please don't laugh people), because it was black and matched my desk top--as opposed to the silver Targus one--and the best part is it's adjustable, so it works with my 12-inch PowerBook and my old Pismo.

  • HT1338 Problem: My Mac Pro is heating and the fan produce a lot of noise, what shall I do? I got the new Montain Lion

    Dear best Users,
What shall I do? My Mac Pro 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo/OS X 10.8 13-inch 2009= Is heating and producing a lot of noise with the internal Fan.
    Best,
    Dario van der Lündin

If you can, open Activity Monitor and see what's using up all the %CPU.
If its kernel_task, shutdown immediately and do a PRAM reset, like this:
    1. Power down the machine.
    2. Locate the following keys on your keyboard in preparation for Step 4:
    ‘command’ – ‘option’ – ‘P’ – ‘R’
    3. Press the ‘power on’ button.
    4. Immediately – and before the grey screen appears – hold down ‘command-option-P-R’ all together.
    5. Keep them held down until you’ve heard the start-up chime twice. After you release them you should hear it again, and hopefully your Mac will boot up as it should and with the kernel_task process back to normal.
If that's not it, try quitting whatever the process is by selecting it in the Activity monitor window, then 'Quit' in the task bar. If the process refuses to quit, post back with the name of the process.

  • I have Heat and high Fans Voice if i play games

    macbook pro i7 2.2 2011
i have Heat and Voice of the fan is too high  if i play games on mac os x lion or bootcamp windows 7
Is this problem is not good for macbook pro ?

If you are askiing whether heat and fan noise affect the machine, the answer is no, as long as the internal temperature remains within the machine's safe operating range. Keeping it within that range is what the fans are doing and why they are making noise. If the temperature exceeds that safe range, the machine will shut itself down.
If you are asking whether the heat and noise affect the user, of course the answer is yes, the user will notice them.

  • Restart leads to no shutdown of OS and excessive Fan but....

    Hi everyone,
I hope a mac guru can help me with this little issue...I never restart my mac as im involved in video editing etc. However, sometimes I need to restart due to software updates etc. I have a problem whereby OSX shuts down and the screen goes black, and then the fan goes into overdrive...I mean SERIOUSLY loud! I thought maybe this was cos my G5 is overheating or something, so I left it overnight presuming it would sort itself out and stop the fan when cool...however next morning the fan was still happily sounding like a small helicopter. Is this a known issue? I havent been able to find anything...Is it software or hardware? Everything else on my apple has been exemplary.

    Frederick,
I would check out this article, and if you have not done so, now perform items a) and b)
    http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?128@@.68921c2d
Those are the simplest starting points and they might help, certainly can not hurt.
Then I would check out this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301283
Please note that one of the early steps is a PRAM reset, which will cause you to lose some preference settings. PRAM is described here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86194
If to correct your issue, you must continue in that article beyond the PRAM reset, you will come across the System Management Unit (SMU) reset. A better explanation of the SMU reset is in this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301733
Note that this article is for purposes of dealing with a second generation iMac, however, you'll note how simple the procedure is, therefore it presents no risk to you to try it anyway - hey, you never know what'll work. Due to its simplicity, I would perform this SMU reset (that probably will do nothing) prior to performing the SMU reset (the proper reset for your model) described in the above article.
If you are interested in understanding a little more about the SMU and how it and the PMU (Power Management Unit) control the fans, check out pages 14-15 and 24-25 of the May 2005 iMac Developer Note
And, to answer your question, it's a software glitch - something has just gotten slightly out of place. If it continues, it would necessitate reinstalling Tiger, but hopefully you won't have to go that far.

  • Heat and fast fans during gameplay...

I can get about 20-30 minutes playing a game until my MPB starts to overheat at 170 F. The fans blast off to about 3500rpms and the game gets very bogged. The MBP is on a flat surface the whole time.

Even though it helps out some people i'm not a fan of apps that take control of your fanspeeds, the MBP has it's own software built in to handle this and it works good for me.
When idle my fans run at 1900 - 2000 rpm.
When i make my MBP sweat and work hard the fan speeds can run up to 6000 rpm each and it will keep my temperatures well within acceptable ranges.
The hottest it ever got was 79C and that only lasted a minute or two.
With a Core Duo 2 MBP the minimal fan speed should not be less than 2000 rpm and the max. fan speed 6000 rpm. Running the fans flat out all the time will probably shorten their life.
I'd say on normal use anything from 2000 - 3500 rpm is normal.
The fans can take a beating and run at full speed for a few hours or in bursts no problem.

  • Heat and the fans not kicking in to chill things.

So today i just hecked iStat Pro and noticet the temps and fans were not kicking in to cool thing down i made a screenshot here it is. To be honest its hot outside so that is why my Ambient is that high, i was sinking my ipod and waching some YouTube that is all.
Opinions and Answers are verry much appreciated.

Just run smcFan conservatively. I've never had any problems with it on this late 2009 21.5.
Here are my settings. During the winter, I run at the defaults or just above. Right now, it's 97F outside. I'm often running on my second lowest setting, Minimum. The fan at the back helps a lot.

    Hi nature26,
There is no Firefox search, there are a number of search engines you can choose in the Settings men u > Customize> Search Engines
The search engine will be searched in the toolbar, as you type there will be an option to chose to search in many engines. If you turned on google search suggestions this will happen as well.
When you say the option is greyed out, can you please take a screenshot on the tablet and upload it in a response, it is a little unclear what you are trying to do. [[How to make screenshots]]

  • When using wusa.exe to install MSU update package and enabling logging using the /log switch, what format are the log files in?

I have been installing a number of hotfixes for Windows 7 using MSU files and the wusa.exe utility included in Windows. I thought it would be a good idea to generate separate log files for each update as it was installed since wusa.exe now supports this
option using /log:<file name>. However, the log files created do not seem to be regular text files or any other log file format that I immediately recognize. When opened in Notepad or Wordpad you can see that they contain a lot of additional binary data
which can't be read by a regular text viewer.
Does anyone know what format these log files are in? What tool should you use to read them?

Only Microsoft can manage to design something as stupid as this. If you start wusa from the command line, it pops up the alternative command line switches. For log, it just says: " /log     - installer will enable logging". It doesn't say that you
should specify the log file name, hence not HOW you specify it (" /log:<path\filename>.") It doesn't say what extension to use for the file, alas which file type it is (" /log:<path\filename.evtx>."). You open it in notepad, you cannot read it.
You open it in sccm's cmtrace.exe/trace32.exe, you get nothing. IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO IMPLEMENT THIS IN A WORSE WAY. How can something be so bad? How can Microsoft get such stupidity inhouse, when you need to go through six interviews or something to get in??
I cannot believe it - unfortunely, this is seen again and again.

  • Firefox still does not remember some passwords. Is this ever going to be fixed? I've had to switch to Chrome because of it.

I never had problems with earlier versions of Firefox, but starting several versions ago (I don't remember which one now), it started forgetting some of them. The worst problems have been with Facebook, which is the one I visit most often except for my ISP's spam filetered mail. That site has not had any problems. I'm using Windows 7 with the latest updates. Firefox 12.0, Norton AV (2012), Windows 7 firewall. I can't think of anything else that might affect the browswer, and Chrome has had no problems with the passwords. I have IE and Opera, neither of which I use enough to have noticed problems.

Do you mean names and passwords in the Password Manager or do you mean that you are no longer logged on to (remembered by) websites after closing and restarting Firefox?
There is a difference between remembering the name and password in the Password Manager and a "remember me" check box on a web page to log you in automatically.<br />
The latter usually involves the creation of a special "remember me" cookie that is stored on your computer and that is send to the server.<br />
If that "remember me" cookie is removed or gets corrupted or is not send to the server then the server won't remember you anymore and you need to sign in once again.

  • Why has Firefox become so slow? I hate Google but I've had to switch to Chrome. I'm on a top of the range Mac Mavericks with latest Firefox browser.

Never mind the volunteers! Why the hell can't the creators of Firefox sort this out? But if they don't want to bother then I'll just forget Firefox and carry on with Chrome.
I've tried all the cute little so-called fixes, cleared the cache, even got some silly thing called Speedy Fox but none of it ever works. Please Firefox, just sort it out.

Volunteers are the creators of Firefox, it's an open source project.

  • Using a physical switch - DL11 and USB1208FS

I have an application that runs in DL and links to a USB1208FS.  In the DL worksheet we have a switch (which pauses and restarts worksheet) and need to use a physical switch.  Originally connections made to pins 30, 21 and 40.  Problem was though that not enough voltage change being picked up for DL to recognise chage in state of switch.  So on the advice of a DL programmer - pin 30 was changed to pin 4 and pins 5 and 6 were joined - this worked fine.  Basically that is working analogue i believe.
Same app, different switch, same connections and now not working - worksheet permenantly in a paused state.
    any help gratefully received
    Roger

    Hi Roger,
    Can you post the worksheet?
What's the state of the input? Is it coming in high when the switch is open, and low when it's closed? That's what I saw on my training setup.
You may need to put a logic module after the switch to invert it ... or change the Trigger settings that you're using.

If you mean you want to send video from another computer to the iMac display,
the answer is: NO WAY. iMacs have no video input; the mini-DVI is output-only.
If you want to send iMac video to a shared external monitor, it might work -- if
you can find a KVM switch for a USB keyboard & mouse.

Every once in awhile while using safari my bookmarks list disappears.  Later it just shows up again.  Anyone know what causes this and how to fix it?

I have had exactly the same problem now with two mini iPads.  Everything was tried; 1) restarting; 2) restoring factory settings etc.  NONE worked.  Eventually Apple agreed to replace it.  I have had the replacement now for two to three months and exactly the same thing is happening again. So off to Apple tomorrow to get another replacement.
I am quite a heavy user of the iPad so wonder if this is something to do with the fault.
It is so frustrating as sometimes reset works, and then after 10/20/30/40 minutes (you pick) it goes unstable again.

Sounds like a bogus pop up. In any case power down your Mac, your modem, your router. Then power back up in 1 minute sequence; modem, router, Mac.
