Safari Crashes Entire System, Hard Reboot Required

Ok, ever since the update to 10.6.1 and Safari 4.0.3, I've been getting pretty recurrent crashes of the whole system where I need to hard shut it down. (it tells me to). First happened a few days after I updated and I've never gotten these errors before - not once. I usually, on average, crash once a day and it's fairly annoying.
The circumstances which bring up the crash are when I open a new tab in Safari, so it displays my new sites. The second I click on one of the windows to navigate to the site it crashes, it doesn't even start loading up the page. It doesn't matter which site I go to, it has crashed on just about every single one. I've reset Safari Multiple times, repaired permissions, pretty much the works. Anyone having a similar issue, or know a possible fix? Should I post the crash log?
I consider myself very tech literate and I work for a university fixing computers. However, I can't read crash logs for the life of me... So tell me what to do and I'll figure it out.

Ran the Extended Test and my suspicions were confirmed, the RAM is good. IMHO, if the RAM was bad it would be unstable in a variety of programs, not just doing a specific action in a specific program. I've dealt with many computers with bad RAM and this didn't seem to be one of them.
Now, should I just AppZap, Safari and re-install it
Heres the last Safari crash log, I have.

  • Video playback in Firfox/Safari crashes entire system

My trusty little iBook is now almost 4 years old - after two logic board fixes, it seemed to be running fine. Then one day while repairing permissions using Onyx under Panther (10.3.9), the whole system crashed. Since then I've had to downgrade to the original Jaguar (10.2.4) install - I can't seem to get it to upgrade back to Panther with any sort of stability.
While I can live with Panther (God I miss Exposé!), I find that almost every time I view any video within a webpage in Firefox, either the browser crashes or, worse, the video freezes, the audio sputters, the machine becomes completely unresponsive, and the only way out is to do a hard reboot. I'm thinking maybe I have some video card issues??
    Any help/suggestions would be great!!

Not enough space. The figure that is bandied about is 15% of the total capacity should be left free. On a 60 GB hard drive, that means 9 GB should be left available.
If you've done several Archive and Installs, you will have a folder called Previous Systems. You could safely delete that and regain some space.
Have you tried repairing the hard drive (not just permissions) by either by booting into Safe Mode OR by starting up from the Jaguar Install Disc by inserting the disc and restarting your computer, holding down the C key as the startup chime is ending. Then choose Installer > Open Disk Utility and select the hard drive in the left column. Choose the First Aid tab. Click Repair Disk to test and repair the hard drive.
Once you have repaired the hard drive with either Safe Mode or the Install disc's Disk Utility, then start up normally and repair permissions from Disk Utility in the Utilities folder on the hard drive.
Once you've deleted the Previous Systems folder and repaired the hard drive, you can try the Panther installation again and see if you have any better luck with a new Archive and Install.
    Good luck.

  • System becomes unresponsive, hard reboot required (multiple Macs)

For the last couple of weeks I have been encountering unresponsive systems on several Macs, each time with the same symptoms:
Spinning beachball in all running apps
Spinning beachball for all menu items
Unable to launch, quit or force quit apps
Mousing and window switching still works
Each time the only way to recover is a hard reboot. There seems to be no mention of any problems in the system logs, I get the impression that the system is hanging before being able to report anything.
I have this problem on three Macs so far, a 2x2.3Ghz PowerMac G5, a 2x2.0Ghz PowerMac G5 and my iMac G5 2.0Ghz at home. All systems are running 10.4.10.
Has anyone else had this problem? Any solutions?
Edit: I have already repaired permissions, emptied caches, run scheduled maintenance, sacrificed chickens, etc.

    I don't think it's a lack of memory, 2.5Gb, 2.0Gb and 1,0Gb respectively.
My G5 at work (2.5Ghz) and my iMac at home have very similar setups as far as installed apps and settings, however the third Mac at work has very little in common with the other two. OTOH the only non-Apple software all three Macs have in common is Adobe Creative Suite (2xCS3, 1xCS1), Quicksilver and Growl.
I figure it must be something system related because a user level app shouldn't take out all the others like that, I was hoping to find that I wasn't the only person experiencing these problems!
I have the terminal open with my session on my work Mac, but I had closed the window before it last beachballed and it wouldn't open a new one. Even if the window had been open I doubt it would have responded.
I will try to SSH into whichever Mac beachballs next to see if it responds, but I know it happened at home once while I was streaming a film from the iMac and the film immediately stopped. At first I suspected it was network related because the Airport menu item always seemed to be the first thing to beachball at home, but all the network connections are wired at the office.

  • Mail.app crashes entire system (etc)

    Hi all,
One of our photography workstations had an issue with the hard disk recently that meant Apple support took us through reinstalling OS X Snow Leopard.  We then restored the main user's profile due to the profile becoming unusable during the reinstallation.
Since then, various apps crash the entire system, Mail.app being one of them.  'Crash', in this case, means the spinning beach ball that never goes away, Finder is dead and moving the mouse over the Apple in the top left corner just shows the beach ball - 'Force Quit' is therefore inaccessible..  The Dock is also dead, meaning I can't kill Mail.app from there.  At this point the only option is to hold down the power switch and restart the system completely.
So far, this is what I've tried.
    -     Updating all system components to the latest versions
    -     Updated all installed apps so they're up-to-date
    -     Removing Mail.app and reinstalling it from the DVD (didn't work - OS X just said the version isn't compatible and I had to restore Mail.app from a backup)
    -     Removed all Mail.app files and settings from ~/Library/Application Support etc, including /Library/Application Support, ~/Library/Preferences and /Library/Preferences.
    -     Installed Postbox.app - even that doesn't work.  Starting the app kills OS X and requires the power-button restart ... this one confuses me as it's different app (it's almost like port 25 traffic is killing the OS, although I don't see how that's possible)
All that said, a new user profile *does* work.  That tells me that Mail.app itself is OK and that it's a profile issue.  However, I did delete all the Mail.app profile files that I could find so I'm assuming (yes, I know assumptions are bad) that the profile Mail.app created after that is actually brand new.
However, I don't want to create a whole new profile unless it's absolutely last resort - the user profile has extensive customisation for screen calibration, printer profiles etc, all done by a very expensive external company ... I'd rather not pay them to do it all again unless it's totally unavoidable.
Can anyone suggest any files that Mail.app might be using that I've missed?  It seems odd that Postbox.app does the same thing as Mail.app, as does the Office 2011 updating application (i.e. all kill OS X/Finder).
When the first problem happened, the hard disk starting saying I/O error but Apple is refusing to replace the drive, despite this machine having Apple Care ...
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Chris

I did the bolding for emphasis.  When I see the words "extensive customisation" I think those become the first suspects.
Can anyone suggest any files that Mail.app might be using that I've missed?  It seems odd that Postbox.app does the same thing as Mail.app, as does the Office 2011 updating application (i.e. all kill OS X/Finder).
The primary folders and files associated with Mail.app are:
    ~/Library/Mail
    ~/Library/Mail /Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
    ~/Library/Mail /Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.mail.XXXX-XXXX-XXXX.plist
where the X's are letters and digits.
Note that the fact that other apps are misbehaving should tell you that the problem is not with mail but more systemic.
When the first problem happened, the hard disk starting saying I/O error but Apple is refusing to replace the drive, despite this machine having Apple Care ...
Run Disk Utility and repair/verify your drive.  This is another red flag.

  • Snow Leopard Samsung ML-1630 Crashes entire system - what's wrong?

The printer will print, but the entire system crashes and the Mac Mini reboots each time a print job is sent. The forum points out a lot of problems with printers and the Snow Leopard upgrade, but no real help seems to have been offered.
I did download the new Samsung drivers recommended for snow leopard using the Apple link
I have removed and reinstalled the printer, several times
What's wrong? Did Apple test this before they launched the new software?
I bought the printer from an Apple store, I hope they support it still.

I agree with William on this. I use the same printer with just native OSx support.
There is one possible issue. The power that the printer draws when printing is pretty significant. My UPS (AVR) kicks in every time I print there. I do have many devices on this circuit though.
It is possible that your voltage is being pulled so low that your machine is rebooting.
If possible try the printer on a different circuit or turn off as much as possible equipment on the same circuit and give it a try.

  • Safari bogsdown entire system on certain website

    Hello all -
On my work Mac (13" MBP 2.4 4GB running Lion) I'm using safari as my main browser. Everything is fine and dandy until I visit mashable. The site literally bogs down the entire system, beach ball of death, etc. Once before, after X'ing out the tab after several minutes of loading and beach balls, it reset my authentication of gmail, facebook, etc open on other tabs where i have to log on again.
Only happens on mashable.com but not on any other graphic intensive website. Drives me nuts.
On Chrome, I dont get extended beach ball death, but it runs pretty slow and delayed scrolling but "eventually" finishes loading.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.) Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Safari crashing on most pages that require a log in

I have been having trouble with my safari browser for the last month. When I log into websites that I need to log in to (bank, car insurance, etc) the browser unexpectedly quits and I send a bug report. I have problem with my email pages, and all other web pages are fine. It has bever crashed before this issue and I have had my mac for nearly 3 years. Ihave reset safari and downloaded all of the updates. Nothing has changed.
    I am running OS X 10.3.9 And safari 1.3.2

    Still stuck, how about you?
I was talking about "Repair Permissions" in the Mac untilities. Since my last post I've rebooted the router and cable modem to no avail so I'm still stuck. Network seems to be running fine on all other sites. Odd in my case that as far as I have experienced I only crash on the United home page and this just started recently.
My guess is that United added some new graphcis and maybe a little movie that Quick Time Player or something like that can't load. The crash isn't instant, most of the site loads fine but if one follows the status scroll on the bottom it gets to roughly 67 of 68 items, stalls and then crashes. I get a long thread from the "bug report" after the Safari crash but I'm not enough of an operating system guru to figure out what the problem is.
For the moment I'm waiting for a bright idea.

  • Chromium crashing entire system on opening new tab

I'm using a fresh install of Arch x64_86 at the moment, and I've installed the stable version of Chromium from the repositories (11.0.696.65). Sometimes when I open a new tab in the browser, it will cause the entire system to lock up, forcing a hard reboot. This happens roughly once a day and, as far as I can, is totally unrelated to flash or any other addons.
Any idea where I might start looking to fix this?

    The latest chromium in the repo is 12.0.742.100-1 :  http://www.archlinux.org/packages/?sort … =&limit=50
Can you Syu and check if it works again. If you don't get an update for chromium, try switching mirrors.

  • Snow Leopard Crash / Freezing Issue - Keyboard Dead - Hard Reboot Required

    Good morning,
Been using Snow Leopard on a 24" 2.4Ghz iMac pretty much since the day of launch. Initially was very pleased, no real problems, seemed to run even smoother than regular Leopard, however, recently, my system has developed a bunch of issues, particularly when running word and/or transmission (possibly other apps, but I have noticed with these two so far).
The main problem is, very randomly, the system will lock-up. This can be after 1 hour or 24 hours, there is no real correlation. After the lock up, you are able to use open apps, ie Transmission, Word, Safari, Finder, etc, but they do not function correctly...for example
Word - You can click into documents, but any keyboard strokes are completely ignored.
Safari - You can browse links on default start page, etc, but you cannot create new tabs or type anything into the address bar.
Finder - You can browse folders; but you cannot perform any functions such as dragging to trash, etc.
Also worth noting, it the main menu bar at the top of the screen continues to say either "Word" or "Transmission" etc, regardless of what application you are in. Clicking on any applications icons in the dock has no response unless they were already running.
The system is unable to shut down or log off, and you cannot quit apps. The only option is to do a hard reset via holding down the power off button.
Note: My system is set to never sleep. There is no screensaver.
Any advice would be gratefully received. I'm a fairly new mac user so i'm not aware how to view log files etc., which may identify the problem.
    Many thanks in advance.

Just want to reiterate. I am seeing freeze issues with my iMac 2.8 GHZ 4GB ram and wireless keyboard and magic mouse. Had this for two years without problem. When a freeze occurs mouse is reponsive but clicks don't give result. I am unable to open window to force quit apps. It may be related to iTunes but I can't confirm. Happening again now, even as I type this I can't open other appslike console log. I add more later.

  • Faulty MS Word file crashes entire system

So I do not expect a fix, I even doubt that anyone here knows how this is possibel, but I'd like to put it out there. How is it possible for a faulty MS Word file (which works fine on my Win7 system) can bring down my entire OSX system? Symptoms are as follows. Word hangs, all other apps start hanging, OSX looses server connections, OSX hangs and does not relaunch when choosing to do so under Force Quit forcing me to press and hold the power button to shut down the computer. In my opinion this should not be possible. It is after all just a word processing file. It can also happen by just selecting the word file in Finder. So it can even crash OSX just by asking for a file preview.
    Best regards
    Guy Rosset

  • Fix for Safari Freezing Entire System

You can read the EXPLANATION or just jump right to the SOLUTION.
    EXPLANATION
So in the past two days my Safari started freezing after using it for a mere few minutes.  I'd get the spinning beachball and my system became unresponsive.   I couldn't force close anything nor could I even access the force-close window (command+option+ESC).
This problem was also affecting Apple Mail because it uses Safari/WebKit to preview HTML in the messages.
I tried repairing permissions, I tried disabling extensions, etc.  Nothing worked.  While I was doing this, I pulled my MacBook Pro out of my bag and started using it to try and get some work done in my office concurrently.  Well, all of a sudden IT started crashing with Safari as well!
This got my thinking, perhaps there was a bookmark or setting issue that was being synced via iCloud.  So I unchecked Safari sync from the iCloud Preferences panel and also inside iCloud Drive.
I then followed the instructions below, which basically removes all of my Safari prefs, bookmarks, etc and reverts it to a clean, pristine install.  Yes I lost my bookmarks.  I have backups and will manually add them again.  I've been using Pocket (GetPocket.com) anyway so no big loss to me.
Regardless, I've been using Safari for the past 30 minutes with my extensions re-installed and no freezing, no issues at all.
    Taken from: Reset Safari Settings/Preferences
Note: The following will make a backup of all of your Safari prefs and copy it to a folder on your Desktop.  It will then reset Safari to default.
    SOLUTION:
Open a terminal window and just copy/paste the following into the terminal window and press RETURN / ENTER:
    mv ~/Library/Safari ~/Desktop/Safari-`date +%Y%m%d%H%M%S`; \
    rm -Rf ~/Library/Caches/Apple\ -\ Safari\ -\ Safari\ Extensions\ Gallery; \
    rm -Rf ~/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari; \
    rm -Rf ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari; \

    UPDATE:
I copied my Bookmarks.plist file back to my Library/Safari folder from the copy that was created in the Safari backup folder on my desktop in the previous message.  Safari continues to work and I have my bookmarks back.

  • 'You shut down the computer because of a problem'. Mbp constant black screen crashing, can only hard reboot each time. Please help, latest report here...

Hi for the last few months my mbp seems to randomly crashing to black screen at seemingly unrelated times. Most frequent are after periods of sleep and sometimes when web pages such as youtube load. This crashing is getting more and more frequent and when it occurs only a hard reset with the power button has any effect. The screen goes completely black, no backlight, no keys work, the fans keep going and if there was a song/video playing it starts looping the last note/second of noise over and over until the laptop is reset. My worry is that if i take it to the apple store, it will decide not to crash on that day which would drive me insane as its been happening all the time.
I've sent lots of 'reports' off to apple and saved numerous panic reports, here is the latest one:

Any information on why this is happening would be so so so appreciated as losing all your work in a blink of an eye is unbelievably rage inducing.
    Thank you!

You have the MacBookPro6,2—the Edsel of Macs. It may have the logic-board defect that was covered by a recall program that has now ended.
Residents of the EU may be entitled to warranty service for up to six years after purchase.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers do not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue that Apple calls "VST" (for "Video Switching Test.") Ask for it. A "Failed" result means that the fault is present.
You may be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility. If you decide to pay for a new logic board, test thoroughly during the 90-day warranty period on the repair. Some owners have reported that they went through as many as three replacement boards before getting one that worked.
If you don't want to pay for the repair, you may (or may not) be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching. To use the discrete graphics processor, you'll need a third-party utility to switch to it manually.
Often the problems start after an OS upgrade. If the upgrade was recent, and you have backups, then you can revert to a previous OS X version.

  • Safari crashed my system

I updated Safari last night. What a mistake! At first I was able to select Safari, although it would just exit out without opening. I tried to restart my system and now my laptop will not come back on. It stays on the initial screen with the apple and circle going round and round. I am stranded! Any help on how to recover? I am desperate!

I have not reinstalled any version of OS X since the first version was released so I am a LONG way from an expert.
Have you tried to download OS X 10.9 from the App store?
The message you have gotten probably means something, but it is cryptic, to say the least.
Did you try this? I do not know if the bootable clone you installed clobbered the recovery disk. I do know that some programs that creater bootable clones do not capture the recovery disk.

Installing the original OS X and then upgrading would (should) definitely be an option.

  • Unknown file in Downloads folder crashes entire system!

I have scoured through google and cannot find a simliar case of this.
When I open my Downloads folder, I can scroll down to about half way before it just freezes and doesn't come back. I've tried Selecting All and just deleting it all, but that again just crashes it! Its obvious to me that theres a seriously corrupt file in there, but I haven't downloaded anything out of the ordinary!
I've made myself a new folder called Downloads and set them all to download to there, but its just frustrating knowing that I can't ever use the proper Downloads folder!
Someone please help! Its really annoying!

    Okay.
Open the Terminal app. It looks like an old computer with black backround and some kind of prompt. I'm feeling stupid, i can't remember if it's in the main Applications folder or the Utilities one.
Either way, once you have it open, it should default to your Home folder represented by '~' at the command line.
Navigate to the Downloads folder - unless you moved it, i think it lives under your Home folder. Use the following command to "Change Directory" to that one:
    cd ~/Downloads/
That should put you right in the folder where your downloads are.
You can list the contents to the screen by using the 'ls' command:
Then, if you so choose, you can delete any or all of them using the 'rm' command:
    example...
    rm myfile.txt
    - This would delete the file 'myfile.txt'
    rm my*.txt
    - This would delete all files that start with 'my' and end with '.txt'
and to delete all of them....
    rm .
    I hope this helps...
take a look here for more info on basic Terminal usage, etc.
