Safari disrupting internet connection

I've been reading some posts re Safari not loading pages and being very slow. I'm experiencing the same thing, however at the same time I'm losing my connection altogether (iTunes radio will no longer connect, etc.). Just wondering if it's possible that Safari problems would effect the connection. ISP tech is pointing the finger at me, however I have done nothing major to my system since I started my ISP account 2 mths ago (except minor software updates back on the 10th of Oct.). It all started this last week and has been very frustrating!
1. Safari does not "crash", just can't find the server anymore, is incredibly slow or just doesn't go to a page.
2. Modem has been reset and cable connection remains stable. All lights on modem good.
3. Can reconnect right away if I reboot, however connection remains unstable.
4. Can reconnect in about .5 hr. if I do not reboot.
5. Have reset Safari.
6. Prior to above stated trouble, if I left Safari open overnight (internet is always connected) it wouldn't work in the am and I'd have to reboot - this is now what is happening frequently, sometimes every 10 min.
I'm going to follow up on some suggestions here, ie. DNS servers and Safari prefs, however I'm really not entirely sure of the source of this problem and am not sure where else to look... maybe I'm in the wrong forum. Have double checked all settings and wires, etc. Need to have some back up if the finger needs to point back at ISP. Thanks so much!

Hi again,
Thank you for the answer to my questions. Yes may as well hold back on the itunes, a lot of updates all in one shot. Make sure to run disk permissions repair, before & after your apple updates.
See on updating A.Brodys site. & His post on updating albeit it is for 10.4.6 good practice for all updates a. Brody lets review.. his is the first post.
Which version of Safari are you running now, I ask because i see you recently did this update 2006-10-06 11:31:25 -0400: Installed "Safari Update" (1.3.1
Since you are running os 10.3.9, the most recent Safari version is 1.3.2
is that what you have?
if you have not done this update, I agree with Hawaiian_Starman, I think you should do the Mac OS X Combined Update 10.3.9 run disk permissions repair before and after, with the DU.
Booting with the CD is running Disk Repair not, disk permission repair
The differencesTravis A.'s Regular Maintenance/General Troubleshooting quick users tip article.
This below is from the Apple downloads page
Improvements include:
- network volumes are now available in the Finder sidebar and Desktop for convenient access
- file sharing and directory services reliability for Mac (AFP), UNIX (NFS), PC (SMB/CIFS), PPTP, and wireless networks
- support for NTFS formatted volumes
- reliability of user logins, mounting of home directories in a networked environment, and launch of network applications
- updated PostScript and USB printing
- updated font management
- reliable disc burning and recording functionality
- Bluetooth compatibility for Apple Wireless Keyboard and Mouse and Bluetooth phones.
- iPods connected via USB 2.0 are now recognized by iTunes and iSync
- updated Open GL technology and ATI and NVIDIA graphics drivers
- updated Address Book, Calculator, Disk Utility, DVD Player, Image Capture, Mail, Preview, Safari, Stickies, and QuickTime applications
- compatibility for third party applications and devices
- additional support for FireWire and USB devices
- FileVault, FireWire 800 and WebDAV improvements from Update 10.3.1
- previous standalone security updates and Bluetooth Update 1.5.1
Of course you will need to be connected to do a download.
On my Ethernet connected mac in Network/Ethernet TCP/IP tab,
I Use DHCP on the Configure IPV4 IPV6: OFF, DNS # provided by my ISP, Earthlink.See if your ISP #s are on the list of DNS Servers
Good luck, & please keep us posted.

  • Safari Losing Internet Connection

We are using Safari 5.0.5 and are having intermittent problems with it holding its wifi connection. Other computers (including an IPad 1) have no problem maintaining the signal, and the computer with this problem (a Macbook) is able to access mail and remotely access the desktop of the wried computer. But Safari will occasionally when loading pages give a message that the computer is not connected to the Internet.
We've been able to work around the problem by running disk utility and emptying the cache/browsing history/Safari preview folders, emptying trash and restarting the computer. This temporarily allows us back onto the internet and seems to resolve the problem, but the fix doesn't "stick."
I'd appreciate any ideas of how to fix this.

From your Apple menu open System Preferences then select the Network tab. Select your connection on the left then click the Assist Me tab then select Diagnostics.
If any of the buttons on the left are red, click Continue.
And check Safari / Preferences - Extensions. If you have any installed, turn that off, test Safari.
If you have any third party Safari add ons installed such as Speed Download, that could certainly be a factor.

  • Turning on Internet Sharing via Airport disrupts internet connection!

I have a very strange problem.
My iMac G5 (10.4.10) is connected to broadband via an Ethernet cable. Everything works perfectly, Google Earth works, emails come through, internet downloads are perfect...
    BUT!!
When I turn on my Internet Sharing to share my Ethernet connection via my Airport connection (to let my husband surf the net on his PC) all **** breaks loose on my Mac.
Google Earth does not function properly, all internet downloads (.dmg) come up with "codec overrun errors", all images sent via email downloaded through Entourage are corrupted, the list is endless. I have to turn off my Internet Sharing, turn off Airport, and then everything returns to normal again.
Why is this, and can someone help stop the fights my Husband and I are having when it comes to sharing the Broadband connection through my Mac - I don't want to because my Mac goes crazy!
    Ta muchly!!!

Sorry but an Ethernet hub will NOT properly share the ISP connection. The ISP only gives you a single IP address. If you use a hub (or Ethernet switch), the first computer you turn on will win and get the only IP address. The other computer will not be able to connect.
To properly share the connection, you need to get a router. The router uses the single public IP address provided by your ISP and creates multiple local IP addresses for your computers.

  • Safari / Airport Internet Connection Issue

New to the mac from PC and have installed airport card in my G5. The card sees the network and connects but safari won't load. I have reinstalled software again no luck, just keep getting error message can;t find server and I'm stuck what do to being new to macs. Any help please would be great. Thanks.

    Hello Neil1687,
Welcome to Apple discussions and to Mac; )
Under the Blue Apple > System preferences > Software Update >* Installed
updates, do you have the 2 updates listed below ?
    2006-05-29 11:31:17 -0400: Installed "AirPort Software" (4.2)
    2006-05-29 11:37:21 -0400: Installed "AirPort Extreme Driver Update 2005-001" (1.0)
Do you know about Running Disk permissions repair ? That is a must before updating any apple software. Look at this article Travis A.'s Regular Maintenance/General Troubleshooting .Focus on letter " a)"
You may have to update Airports software if you do not have aforementioned software updates installed.
    * However Software installed via Downloads on Apple will not show In Installed Software.
Those will show in HD>Library > Receipts Folder [ go to list mode] see what you have for Aiport.pkg [s] * Do Not move any files from the folder.
Since you have the card installed there may be more then i show above, i do not have a card installed yet on my 'puter 10.3.9.
Under The Blue Apple again run your "Software Update.." to see what, if anything is there for you, however you should run disk repair before & after
the update, make sure all other applications are "Quit".
Update only the airport for now ignore other updates.
This will show us also if you can connect to the web.
This forum maybe helpful to you Getting Online

  • G4 QS 733 loses internet connect often with Comcast any ideas??

I have a G4 QS 733 that loses internet connection through Comcast at least 2 times a day everyday for no rhyme or reason. I have had the cable modem replaced (on number 7 in 18 months but 2 were dead out of the box stupid refurbs) with a Motorola Surfboard from Best Buy and when it works it is great - 13mbps download consistently. I have a Belkin router wireless/wi-if and a PC and the Mac wired to it at the same desk with KVM and when the Mac loses connection if I switch to PC the PC connects fine so I think it is in the Mac but not sure. I have had several Macs hooked up to this same router including 2 Intel minis, several G3 towers and a few G3 iMacs and G4 towers as well and ALL had this problem at one time or another with no explanation whatsoever. I have replaced everything a minimum of 2 times now including router, modem, cables etc. and the cable drop from pole to house was replaced a few months back but no luck. Also all computers, router etc all hooked to APC battery backups so I do not think it is power related. I have no problems connecting my Pismo wiht either an Airport card or a Belkin 54g wireless PCMCIA card so I am convinced it is in the ethernet somwehow but not sure where. Anyone else have the same problems and fixed it?? Comcast is just not helpful and 14 service calls in 18 months is wearing thin at this point.

Well just for kicks I tried running Firefox for a little over a week along with Safari and jumping back and forth between the 2, very interesting results. I have found that when Safari loses internet connection and gives "cannot find server" type errors that Firefox still has a connection and keeps right on going. I am convinced the error is within Safari but cannot pin down what it is yet. I had same EXACT disconnection issues with an Intel Mini that got so frustrating I finally sold it and it too was running Safari and I wonder if it had the same issue. Not bashing Safari but maybe there is a problem with Safari and Comcast cable that is not showing up with other internet providers or browsers ?? I am pretty sure my connection is good as all the cable wires, modem etc are all new and my PC which his hooked to the same router and shares the monitor/keyboard with the G4 never loses connection when Safari does so I think this cuts the cable out of the loop as a problem. Anyone else have similar issues???

  • Internet connection terminated

My father has just bought a Mac Mini (basic model running Panther 10.4). I have set it up for him with his old dial up internet account with Tiscali using the internal modem. It connects fine but after 2 to 13minutes (seems random) of using Safari the internet connection is broken with the message 'The connection was terminated because the other side is not responding'.
I have increased the disconnect when inactive to 30mins but it makes no difference. The account worked fine with his old PC.
Any ideas how to fix this? It took me months to persuade him to get a Mac and now he wants his PC back!
    Thanks

Sure, no problem Paul. The other end is plugged into a universal box that streams digital tv and provides the internet all in the same line. It is high speed DSL and there are no other macs attached to the internet. Unless I physically unplug my ethernet cable and plug it into the old iMac running system 9.2. I have absolutely no internet issues when I use the old iMac. All of this cropped up when my new intel iMac showed up. I am an experienced user and this is my 4th Mac in 14 years. Hope this helps the diagnosis...
    Thanks.

    "Safari breaks Internet connection from
Hello, good day, the safari browser keeps breaking the internet connection from, and it appears the server is unreachable.
However, when I go to network with another browser, I have no problems.
Also Safari crashes often times down, and closes by itself.
    What can I do?"
Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps BEFORE doing the reset.
Try clearing your browser cache: Settings App > Safari > Clear History adn then Clear Cookies and Data

  • Airport shows I am connected to a secure network, but Safari will not connect nor will any other internet software.

I cannot connect via Safari to a live Internet connection.  System preferences show Airport is on and connected to a secure network.  I am able to connect using my iPad and other devices.

Thanks. Turns out that I had to re list the router and update its password along with resetting the DHCP.  Once that was accomplished all seemed to work fine again.  Just can't figure out why the connection was disrupted.

  • Mac shows wireless internet connection, but Safari says "computer isn't connected to the Internet"

    Situation:
Computer shows internet connection (full bars), but won't actually connect to the internet and load webpages
    Attempted Fixes:
    Reset Safari
    Quit Safari
    Restart the computer
Turn off the computer with router unplugged
    Turn off Airport
    Swear at the computer
    Swear at the internet
Unplug the router and turn the Airport off too
    Additional Info:
Second computer (mac) connects to the internet so it's not an internet problem.
Last few days the internet has been slowly dying on the computer (Mac OS X) in question. Meaning that the internet asks me for the router password constantly, which was a new development.
I have seen information about reseting Plists and a few other weird things, but I didn't want to do anything drastic based on someone elses issue. I figured it's best to bring my specific issue to the forum before destroying my Mac by randomly deleting Plists.
    Any thoughts appreciated.

Excellent troubleshooting solutions which usually works.
Which os version are you using?
First contact your ISP.  You need to confirm that the issue is not on their end.
Change your router channel.  Sometimes this is all you will have to do.
Power cycling the router.  Read the router's user manual or contact their tech support for instructions.
    System Preferences/Internet & Network/Network
    Unlock the padlock
    Locations:  Automatic
    Highlight Airport
    Click the Assist Me button
In the popup window click the Diagnostic button.
System Preferences/Network- Unlock padlock.  Highlight Airport.  Network Name-select your name.  Click on the Advanced button.  Airport/Preferred Networks-delete all that is not your network.
Place a check mark next to "Remember networks this computer has joined." Click the OK button and lock the padlock.  Restart your computer.

    No internet connection (wireless)
Check to see if an extra entry is present in the DNS Tab for your wireless connection (System Preferences/Network/Airport/Advanced/DNS).
Delete all extra entries that you find.
Place a check mark next to "Remember networks this computer has joined."

  • My IPOD and Macbook Pro both will not connect to the Itunes store through Itunes says no internet connection, but I can connect through safari and I have a internet connection

My IPOD and Macbook Pro both will not connect to the Itunes store through Itunes says no internet connection, but I can connect through safari and I have a internet connection

As I mentioned above, I am not very tech savvy so I have no idea why a wireless protocol would be showing up there, I'm just listing everything I see in hopes that someone might know something I can try. This is why I am asking for help here - I'm not sure what has happened that has made me unable to connect, especially since it seemingly occured while nobody was using the computer.
I guess I should clarify that I'm not a total hillbilly- normally my firewall is set to 'on', but I set it to 'off' to try and troubleshoot the issues here as I was told that sometimes it can interfere with the computer's ability to connect to the internet. If this is not the case and firewall does not affect anything, I will turn it back on while I try to fix this.
I have tried the method you mentioned above a few times - I actually contacted my ISP earlier this week and they recommended resetting the router like that. They didn't mention any known network issues.

  • Safari no longer connects to the internet

I upgraded to OS Yosemite in my iMac (must be approaching 4 years old) and everything has been working fine.  Had a couple of applications where they closed unexpectedly, but nothing major and things have continued as they always have.  Apps have also automatically updated.   As of today, Safari will no longer connect to the internet and I keep getting the classic "the server unexpectedly dropped the connection" blurb and I kept being told that a disk that I hadn't put in the machine is not being recognized.
I'm typing this on my MacBook Air so I know that Safari can work fine (also having no problem with my iPad or iPhone) and there is no issue with my ISP' modem (I'm with Virgin Media), connector or Netgear wireless router.  Tonight I have performed a recovery install and now I have this annoying message saying how I need a particular Java plugin, which I can't sort out because Safari can't connect to the internet.  I have also performed a router reset, without remedy.
Logically, as I see it, the issue lies with Safari, and due to it being the only internet access on my iMac, I can't even download Firefox or access the App Store so looks like I can't update.  A friend is also having the same issues with his iPad, so I know this isn't just my iMac
Looking for some answers here?  Anyone?
    Thanks

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

Have you tried a simple reset of your iPod to see if that helps?  To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
