Safari doesn't download files

In stead it opens a new tab and tries to open the url of the file.
so far:
- I've deleted the com.apple.safari.plst
- Reset safari
- there are no plugins (speed download or igetter,...)
To no avail, this drives me crazy.
thanks in advance

If you go into safari preferences>general and see which folder it sends downlaods to, you could check there. It could have set to some silly loaction for some reason?

  • Safari doesn't download files, it instead tries to open the url associated with the file.

As stated in the title, when I try to download a file from the internet, clicking on the link associated to the file will not start a download, but instead opens a new tab in my browser showing the url of the associated file. If I then right-click and choose 'Download linked file as...' the file can be downloaded with no issues in most of the cases, at least as long as the website allows right-click downloads to happen.
Does anybody know why this could be? I have tried resetting Safari, emptying the cache and, of course, updating my software. It is a midly annoying problem, but it doesn't happen when I use other web browsers in my iMac. Any help would be appreciated. I'm using Lion in a late 2009 iMac with, as I said, updated software.
    Thanks!

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The Guest login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • I am trying to download a ringtone on my iphone, keep getting message "safari can't download file."

How do I download a ringtone? I keep getting the message "safari can't download file".

To add a ringtone, download it from your computer and make sure it is a .m4r file. Once this is done, add it to your iTunes library (it will go in the ringtones section). Then sync your phone making sure that it syncs ringtones as well (check it in the ringtones tab).
Then in your sound preferences on your iPhone change the ringtone.

  • Safari can't download file when trying to download movies

Safari responds with "safari can't download file' when I use download app to download movies . I don't have issues downloading apps or searching net.  Would be grateful for assistance.

You can't download something from Safari to your iPad.  iPad is a closed system, and not subject to virus intrusion.  Now, if for example you have a Kindle app and you go directly to Kindle in Safari and using your ID you buy a book, the book will download to your Kindle account, which you could then open your kindle App on your iPad and read the book you downloaded in your App.  But you can't go into Safari and just download a book or a movie directly to your iPad from the net........

  • Safari 5 - Problem downloading file

I have a problem to download files with Safari 5 (in this case a flash player plugin, but actually with any file). There is a download button on the website, if I click this button, Safari opens a new page with the extension .dmg. I think it tries to display the dmg file as an extension, so I get a black screen. Nothing gets downloaded. If I use Command-Click on this download buitton, I get the option to download the attached file, but Safari only downloads the http link to the page, the file does not get downloaded.
I need to download this file, because Safaris doesn't display ant flash content, so now I have two issues. Any help is highly appreciated. Thanks!

    HI,
Try this. Go to ~/Library/Safari/ and move the Downloads.plist file to the Trash.
This is the path: Open a Finder window. Select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. It has a small house icon. Then open the Library folder then the Safari folder. The Downloads.plist file is there.
    Restart your Mac.
As for Flash. Uninstall the current copy of Flash, then reinstall fresh, then repair permissions.
    Uninstall Flash
Install the most recent version of Flash here.
    Repair permissions...
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Safari can't download file

I am trying to access my work using the Citrix receiver and it works well on my Mac.  However on my iPhone 4, I get an error message that Safari can;t download the file.  I beleive the file is a *.ica file to launch the Citrixonline plugin or the Citrix receiver app.  Any suggestions?  BTW it works well on a co-workers Android phone.... imagine the grief I am getting!  :-)

Ok I guess I should have made it more clear.  I am using the suggested app.  I have to point to the CAG server in Safari, like I do on my Mac and like my Android brethren.  After I log in, I click the link to launch the actual Citrix receiver (or the citrix online plugin) to get to the Windows desktop, and Safari says can't download the file.  I was unaware on my Mac that a file was being downloaded, which I suspect is the *.ica file, as it happens very quickly and a small window opens that is the Citrix receiver or the online plugin and VIOLA the Win desktop appears.
If I open the Citrix receiver app on the iPhone, there are settings that need to be entered and at this time my higher up IT support won't provide that info, as the iPhone is not approved officially and they won't offer me any info.
I just figured it'd work like it did on my co-workers Android as the process is the same for him and believe it or not for him "it just worked".  :-)

  • Safari very slow downloading files

When I bought my MacBook Pro in 2009 I used Safari for few days then I switched to Firefox, and the reason for that is that downloading any kind of files goes very slow to around 5 KB/s while downloading the same file in any other browser is so fast. Now after the release of Safari 4 I thought this problem could be solved but here again the exact same problem and I really love the new safari except that this problem is really annoying me. By the way browsing is working perfectly fine.
    I have a 2 Mpbs ADSL connection.
    any idea?

Preference files retain information about the default and custom settings for a particular application. Also, they store information accumulated over time not directly related to a preference setting.
In Safari's case, this retained and accumulated information comes from a variety of sources within and outside of Safari. For example, 3rd party add-ons, such as Glims, store information in the preference file pertinent to their operation and settings.
Sometimes, corruption occurs if this information is incorrectly coded in the software. In that instance, as Safari accesses the preference file, it will crash due to a flaw in the data stream. Another example - updating Safari from one version to the next might trigger corruption if the 3rd party content within the preference file is not compatible with the new version's operation.

First result worked for me. Basically you need to post your login data to rapidshare via wget, then use the cookie it sends you. Worked for me. I have an alias in .bashrc like this:
alias rswget='wget --header "Cookie: user={login hash is here}"'
    Thx Mashi... it's working.
    Gr8 work

  • Safari doesn't download extensions- When I click on the install button it says "This developer's server appears to be busy. Please try again later."

I`ve restarted my macbook, checked the wifi (webpages still load), and downloaded the extensions from the developer`s websites. When I download the extensions this way they supposedly install but yet I've yet to see them actually work. (Ultimate Status Bar doesn't appear in links, News Ticker doesn't show news, etc.) I know I probably installed too many, too fast. I uninstalled all my previous extensions and the problem still persists.
I've tried installing the same extensions on my iMac and they work perfectly. What can I do??
    Thank You in advance...
    Adrian

Can you install from the Safari Extensions Gallery instead > https://extensions.apple.com/
Downloading extensions from the internet instead of the Safari gallery may not be a safe thing to do anyway. I downloaded the file from here > http://ultimatestatusbar.com/    then a dialog asked if I wanted to download from the internet. I for one never download extensions except from the gallery.
I found it in the gallery >  https://extensions.apple.com/
Try downloading from there instead. That will download the file to your Downloads folder. Double click the file to install.

  • Safari does not download files automatically (not able to download at all - unless there is an option for a right click- download the linked file)

    Hello all,
I have been having this issue for a while now it starts to get very annoying. Not just Safari, all of my browsers are unable to download any files unless I right click to save. However, for some files/apps there is no way to download at all. For example, when trying to download and install Flash for Safari, I was stuck on a blank web page when the file download was supposed to start, but nothing happened so the installation was unable to proceed. Was trying to download Chrome too, same issue... I could see the download link (as URL) grrr...but it just did not do anything.
    Please help!!!

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Firefox doesn't download files using Download Helper

When I use the "add-on" Download Helper icon to select a video file (FLV) for download, I'm asked which folder it should go into (as usual). But when I click "Download," the file never appears to start downloading. The number in parentheses next to the icon indicates that one file is in the queue, but in right-clicking and then checking the download queue, no files are listed. And then it sits in that configuration forever. No file ever appears anywhere on my system.
The destination folder is present and accessible.
This was a sudden change as of this morning, with no updates to any of my software or apps. I tried refreshing Firefox (v. 36), and I've tried disabling/deleting/reinstalling Download Helper (version 4.9.24) with absolutely no change in these circumstances. It does me no good to open Firefox in safe mode, since then Download Helper isn't enabled and therefore is untestable.
    Any ideas?

Video DownloadHelper 4.9.24 doesn't work properly in Firefox 36. They are working on a new version and have posted a test version you can provide input on. See:
    * Test version site: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/video-downloadhelper-5
    * Info from the developer: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/video-downloadhelper/ ("We are aware of downloading issues when using Firefox 36.")

  • How do I stop Safari from unzipping downloading files

Every time I download a zip file with Safari, it unzips it. I don't want them unzipped. I can't seem to find a way to undo the 'convenience' of modifying files I'm downloading.

I know this thread is now 1.5 years old and was solved to the original poster's satisfaction, but unfortunately I have the same problem and it is NOT solved by standard advice of simply unchecking Safari > Preferences > General > Open "safe" files after downloading.
I have unchecked that box, even restarted Safari and still if I download a .gz file it gets unzipped.  Anyone have any other advice?
I'm running mountain lion (10.8.4) and Safari 6.0.5.
    Thanks.
