Safari download location

Hi.
I apologize if this is a duplicate question. I've seen it posted before but I've never quite seen an answer. I am running version 5.1.7 of Safari and there is no way to make it prompt every time I attempt to download a file (unless I've missed something).
I sometimes have the option of right clicking and choosing 'save as' but sometimes links are to scripts which push downloads and so that doesn't work.
Any help would be appreciated!

This drives me out of my mind as well.
What some people do not realize is that many (probably a mojority) of downloadable files on the Internet ARE NOT diretly linked. Theres often some manner of script or redirect in front of it.
SO - this renders the 'right-click -> save-as' solution useless.
Also - if I'm trolling for downloads, I can easily find myseld downloading upwards of 30-50 files in a single 'browsing session'. So, the idea that I can just open preference 50 times and change the destination directory is absurd.
EVERY other major browser on the market - for every platform - has this as an option. JUST PROMPT ME EVERY TIME! Safari is the only browser that does not.
Apple - PLEASE PLEASE fix this!

Safari Download Location Tweak/Hack/Command Line

Is there a non-standard way to make Safari ask for a location before each download?
I know this is not an option in the standard (and limited) settings. I'm asking about something along the lines of a command line ("Launch Terminal and issue this command...") or a utility like the old Safari Speed (which, I know, doesn't do this...just using it as an example of type) or some .plist file I could manually edit and change a 1 to a 0 or something.

Control-click works if the link is directly to the file in question (like http://fileserver.com/fileyouwant.dmg) but tends to yield unsatisfactory results when the download link is actually a script or executable that prompts the server to begin sending a file. In that latter case, one can end up with a file like "download.exe" on my Mac instead of the file one actually wants.

Safari's download-location selector too big for screen?

Any one else got this one?
When I try to select the "Other" download location in Safari preferences, the resulting pulldown dialog for selecting the location is so huge it spans off the right side and below the bottom of the screen, so I can't drag-resize it, or even click "choose" or "cancel".
Yes, I can just press Esc, or double click on the folder I want, but still this is a bizarre bug which should be easy to fix.

Does not happen for me in Safari 3.1.1. But, to correct your issue try this: open Safari Preferences > General tab and select download location: Other. With the (too-large) dialog box open, press the option key and select Window menu > Arrange in Front. That should bring the resize handle into view at the bottom right, and you can shrink the dialog box down (and that smaller size should be preserved).
If that fails, again with the too-large dialog box open, select System Preferences > Displays and set the resolution to something very small (e.g. 640x480), then after the switch, immediately change it back to your native resolution - that should shrink the dialog box back down to a reasonable size.

I know nothing about “EndNote”, but allow me to give you some general advice. Your first, commented-out, line (“--section to wait for window to pop up”) indicates that you need to change the basic way you are tackling what you want to do. When writing any script, if you know the name and location of a file or a directory (folder) you should not cause (or allow, or need) your script to open an Open or a Save window -- just use the path that you already know.

Safari download 5.0.2 still won't open a safari web page

Hello, can anyone please help?
Since downloading Safari 5.0.1 my safari won't open a web page, it says it is open but no tabs are open, trying apple button and T to open a tab a grey box shows up with my favourites bar says it is loadig then safari rashes before it can load anything. I have just downloaded 5.0.2 but it hasn't helped, I am still having the same problem.

Your problem is caused by the dreaded CT Toolbar!
That toolbar/ct plugin seems to cause problems for all who install it!
Close Safari, then locate and delete the following files and it should be gone:
/Library/Application Support/Conduit
/Library/InputManagers/CTLoader
/Library/Receipts/ctloader.pkg
/Library/Receipts/<Toolbar name>.pkg
/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/CT2285220.bundle
/Users/<User name>/Library/Application Support/Conduit
where / is the root library on your Hard Disk.
If you are running Snow Leopard you should also look here:
Library/launchAgents/com.conduit.loader.agent.plist
Library/Application support/conduit plugins
Note: Safari does not support any third-party toolbars except those supplied as an extension to Safari via the Extension Gallery.

Safari Download links not working, opening new page

Hi, I am not to happy with the latest version of Safari, and it has made one problem worse. When I click on a download link, more often than not, instead of getting a file to download, it opens a new page and appears to be loading the file as raw code. I will see in the location bar at the top something like:
download.php or FileName.zip, and it cycles a while until the full file is loaded but does not show anything by a blank page... Before this version I could right click and choose save linked file As and it would usually work, but now that doesn't work.
Anyone else seeing this problem or have a solution?
I have speed downloader but I have it turned off for sites that were problematic, but Safari doesn' seem to use it anyway, because when it works, it opens a Safari download window, not SD

Quit Safari if it's running. Move the file
Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
in your home folder to the Desktop. Test again. If downloading now works as expected, then that's where the problem lies. Otherwise, it's still somewhere in your Safari settings, but I wouldn't know where. You'd have to ask the "Speed Downloader" developer what to do next.

Assigning different download location to other browsers

Seems Safari controls where all browsers place their downloads. Anyone know if there's a way (free/shareware) to allow, say Firefox, Camino, to download to a different location?

But if I choose the documents folder for Camino, Safari will change to the documents folder as well upon relaunch and vice-versa. Very annoying!
Well, that's a surprise. Things aren't always what they seem to be. I use Safari for all my downloads. I didn't realize until now changing the download preference in one browser changes Safari's location as well. Very strange, but what isn't in Computerworld.
Back to your original question, SpeedDownload offers a very different approach to Downloads. The app. creates a download library supported by smart folders and other useful features. To me, it's a very good app. to use if you download frequently, needing to keep track of downloads etc. From what I see with how the browsers perform, this seems like a viable alternative to their rudamentary way of handling the download function.

Select download location

Hi There,
First off I apologize if this is the wrong location, but is there anywhere I can ask, beg, plead for a feature to be added to Safari?
What I need is the option to select download location whenever files are downloaded. I searched the forums and the answers I saw to this were centered around right clicking and choosing "Download linked file as...". The problem is that doesn't work if the link is to a script which then initiates the download. In this scenerio I know of no easy work around for this feature. I just convinced my wife to get a mac and she is having a big conflict with this. She wants to use Safari instead of Firefox or even worse yet, switching to XP and using IE, but as she downloads several papers every day, this is a big problem for her. If anyone knows of another way around this, I would be happy to hear it.

I understand that can be done, but that doesn't solve the problem. That means if I don't always save the files to the same location, I have to go into preferences and switch the location everytime before I download. The other option is I can select to save it to downloads, and then go move the file to the location I like. Neither of these are very usable solutions because when you are doing this a lot it becomes a bit of a pain.

File download location

I have tried to change my downloaded file location in preferences to the desk top. Every time I restart safari it reverts to a folder which I do not want to use.

Try this...
1) Quit all internet applications
2) Launch "TextEdit" - from the "File" menu select "Open" (Command + O)
3) Navigate to "YourUserName" "Preferences" folder and open the "com.apple.internetconfig.plist" file
The path to the "com.apple.internetconfig.plist" file is: HD -> Users -> YourUserName -> Library -> Preferences
4) When the "com.apple.internetconfig.plist" file opens - Select All of the text (Command + A) - then press the "delete" key
5) Save, Close and Quit "TextEdit"
Launch Safari and reset your Download location

Toggle Download locations?

Hi folks,
Is there a Safari extension or an applescript applet that allows me to toggle between download locations in a single or double click? I want to be able to switch back and forth between "business downloads" and "personal downloads" on the fly without going into the preferences every time.

What is missing in Safari, and discussed in other forum threads, is the ability to choose your download destination with each download... like the other major browsers allow. Apple has archived (i.e. shut off for further discussion) the main thread on this, don't know why.

Download location preference won't stick

Although all the other preferences work as you would expect after sleep/restart/log-out, the 'download location' preference always resets to Desktop. I change it to the Downloads folder on my desktop each time, but it never seems to survive sleep/restart/log-out. Does anyone have any ideas what might be going on here?

so it goes to the desktop but not into the folder,then is that the issue, i do not think it would go to the folder on its own, I think you would have to move it there. Or Pick other in Safari pref. & then pick the Down. folder.

Setting download location

I am just now trying Safari Version 3.1 for Windows, and I am having an issue with entering the download location.
When I go to the "Save download files to:" entry and select "Other", the only choices I am given are "Desktop" and "Links". I use a completely different directory for downloads, and there is no way offered for me to set that.
Do any of you know how I can get Safari to use the download location that I want instead of it forcing me to select from a small and (for me) useless subset of the available directories on my computer?

Given that with your Safari installation, you can see your F: drive, I guess that there is something about my Windows setup that prevents Safari from looking anywhere but in my "Desktop" folder when the selection list for download directories is brought up.
What could affect this?
IE, Firefox, and Opera have no problem seeing my C: drive, so what is it about Safari that would prevent that filesystem from being viewable? If this has to do with ownership or file permissions, then Safari clearly has a problem with this, given that the other browsers (and, in fact, all other installed software) are able to see and access my C: drive.
By the way, I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled Safari. After the uninstall, I removed all leftover files and directories and all remaining registry entries that referred to Safari. After the reinstallation, the problem persisted.
