Safari download problem

Safari just stopped downloading files from a specific website. I now have to hold option and click for the file to download AND then it doesn't open automatically anymore, I now have to click on the file in the download list for it to open. Any suggestions. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Josh

Just an update. I did try all of the above with no luck. Unfortunately it is not a website that can be tried as it is a private company website. On a side note I have another Mac machine and it works ok on that, but for some reason not this one. Again it is only that particular d/l that seems to be a problem. The interesting thing is it won't even initiate the download unless I CTL click on the item and select Download and then as mentioned it does not automatically download, I have to either go to the download list and/or the folder and manually open the file. I'm stumped.

  • Safari downloading problem

    Hi guys,

When press any download button on any website my safari is opening new tab, and then nothing is hapenning. Normally it should take file for download and transfer it to download manager. Problem has been resolved now.
You were right. One of these programs left something behind. And it was program called iGetter.
It left plugin somewhere in the system. When I removed it all browser started to download normally.
I found out bacuase I tried Chrome Browser. And when I tried to download something it gave me an error saying: Can't load iGetter plugin.
I went to spotlight then and searched for iGetter. I removed everything from the system which had iGetter in the name. There was 2 plugin files and something else.

  • Safari download problem with Safari but not with Internet Explorer.

When I drag photos from web-sites via Int.Explorer they end up on my desktop as little pictures. I can see what they are. When I do it with Safari they end up as pages with a turned corner & JPEG at the bottom. The only way to see what they are is to click them for Preview to open.
Why does Safari not do as Int.Explorer & is there any way of making it do so?

    Found the answer in Mac OS Help, topic "Changing the way icons look on the desktop";
Click the background, select View > Show View Options from the menu; check "Show icon preview" in the pop-up menu. Now try copying images from Safari to your desktop!

  • Safari has problem downloading gmail attachment with chinese filenames

When using safari download attachments in gmail, the downloaded filenames are corrupted. all Chinese characters changed to ?
    For example ???.doc

Same issue here! Unsolved after YEARS of this issue.
I dig through the downloads folder and paste a copied file name at least 15 times a day.
And Mountain Lion was supposed to be a big push for Chinese language users. Still a fail.
Really want to be a Safari supporter - would love to see this solved, Apple.

  • Firefox downloads "failed". Have reset FF, been through "downloading problems" trouble doc, and uninstalled/reinstalled FF w/o luck. Safari is able to download.

Recently I am unable to download anything in FF. It briefly acts as if downloading, but the file is corrupted and the next to the file in the DL manager it just says "Failed".
I tried Resetting FF. No luck.
Then I tried all the steps in the "downloading problems" support doc. No luck.
I tried with all add-ons disabled. No luck.
In desperation, I searched for "Firefox" and moved two folders called Firefox, the application, and a .plist file to the trash (still there) and redownloaded Firefox and reinstalled. No luck.
If I click on a .pdf it will be be viewable, but it won't download. It's not just .pdfs that fail, it is any file I try and download.

I have the same problem and I also tried a lot of troubleshooting advices without any success.
The problem seems to be with OS X Parental Control turned on and using a other account than the one of the admin.
The user sl-nw found a short-term solutions (changing back to version 31, working like a charm or turning off Parental Control), yet a long-term solution is needed:

Perhaps Firefox should add a bug fix to their next update.

  • I need help, I got a download problem!

    Hello there!
I just bought a used MacBook a few days ago. It is about one year old and pretty used. Evrything seemed to work fine, untill I wanted to download something with my Firefox. The download started but then jusr stopped just before it was done. I tried again and again and again, it just didnt finish. I tried the same download in Safari, same problem. I thought I need an update maybe, so I tried to download the updates, but the just stopped too. I did manage to download some smal files now and then, and I did get iTunes without any problems. But mostly they just stop. Same thing if I try to stream a movie from youtube, it loads for some time, then just stops.
I have reinstalled the OS X once, and the problem is still there. Somebody got a solution, this is realy bothering me right now.

At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.

  • Safari download ics link instead opening it in ical

when i click on a link which points to a ics-file safari downloads this file. i can open it and the event is imported in ical.
is there a way  to tell safari to open it with ical?
    the mime-type i am sending is "text/calendar".
firefox is able to send the ics file to ical.
i can use a webcal-link but then this is rather a subscription but this is not useful for a single event which i want to import in ical.
    thanxs.

Quit Safari if it's running. Move the file
    Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
in your home folder to the Desktop. Test again. If downloading now works as expected, then that's where the problem lies. Otherwise, it's still somewhere in your Safari settings, but I wouldn't know where. You'd have to ask the "Speed Downloader" developer what to do next.

  • Safari Download links not working, opening new page

Hi,  I am not to happy with the latest version of Safari, and it has made one problem worse.  When I click on a download link, more often than not, instead of getting a file to download, it opens a new page and appears to be loading the file as raw code.  I will see in the location bar at the top something like:
download.php or FileName.zip, and it cycles a while until the full file is loaded but does not show anything by a blank page...   Before this version I could right click and choose save linked file As and it would usually work, but now that doesn't work.
Anyone else seeing this problem or have a solution?
I have speed downloader but I have it turned off for sites that were problematic, but  Safari doesn' seem to use it anyway, because when it works, it opens a Safari download window, not SD
    Thanks
    Jeff

  • Download problem for my mac

download problem for my mac it keep on say safari is open when its not

Eric Cosby which Adobe software or service are you referring too?  Have you tried utilizing the Activity Monitor to verify that Safari is closed?

  • Safari downloading data "on its own"

    Hi,
Yesterday I connected my iphone to use its 3G network with tethering. I browsed some sites and promptly received an SMS from my carrier, telling me that I had used all of my 500 MB of monthly data.
Surprised, I checked the "Tethering data" within the iphone settings, and sure enough, I had used about 300 MB in about half an hour of light browsing, which is very strange.
I started investigating and discovered that, sometimes, Safari starts downloading data while I'm doing nothing. Megabytes and megabytes of data. I don't know the source, and it's only input data, not output. I have checked with Activity Monitor, and closing Safari stops the data transfer. Opening it again resumes data transfer
Please note that I consider myself an advanced user, so I have googled a lot, checked that the pages aren't downloading any video in the background (in fact I use FlashBlock), etc. Even disabled automatic update for plugins, but no luck.
I have tried to reproduce the problem and it's kind of difficult because the rogue data downloading from Safari is quite random.
So, my question is, why is Safari downloading data on its own when I'm doing nothing, which data is it, and how can I stop Safari from doing it. It's eating up my connection and now I have to use Chrome to browse the internet, as Safari kills my 3G data plan.
    Thanks!
    Carlos

Install the free application "TinkerTool" (not "TinkerTool System"), select the Safari tab, and check the box labeled "Disable storage of preview images for web pages." Quit and relaunch Safari.

  • Spent some time trying to find a Safari download site with no success.  Where is the iMac Safari download site?

Spent some time trying to find a Safari download site with no success.  I found lots of Safari sites but no Safari download site.  Where is the iMac Safari download site?

(The following does not apply to users of Lion OS 10.7 or later)
If your Safari keeps crashing, or if you are updating Safari (or just have) and it is misbehaving:
N.B. Never delete Safari, never run it under Rosetta, don't use proxy settings, and don't change the application's name or move it from the top level of the Applications Folder to a sub-folder.
(If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall. Alternatively you can download Safari directly:
Safari 4.1.3 for Tiger can be downloaded here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1069
Safari 5.0.6 for Leopard can be downloaded from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1422
Safari 5.1 for Snow Leopard can be downloaded from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1070
Make sure you download the correct version for your system.
Also, observe the recommended procedure for installing software: repair permissions and close all applications, install, then repair permissions again.)
Input Managers and other plug-ins from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.  If Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4, Tiger 10.4.11 uses Safari 4.1.3, Leopard uses Safari 5.0.6,  and Snow Leopard uses Safari 5.1.x. If these latest versions of Safari are not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
(Trying to revert to a previous version of Safari  can have repercussions, as previous versions of Safari used a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail, Dashboard Widgets etc also rely, but if you really want to do this post back for instructions on the safe way to do so.)
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Add-ons that have been frequently mentioned here, among others, for causing such problems are Piclens, Saft, AcidSearch and Pithhelmet, and the dreaded CT Toolbar. If you have them, trash them, and go the developer's sites to see if new versions are available for the latest version of Safari on your current operating system.
You must also ensure that you have downloaded and installed all the correct version for your Mac of Security Updates. These require a restart and a permission repair.
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for  problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
    Hard Disk/Library/InputManagers
    Home/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates and updates to Safari (they can always be added back one-by-one later).
Lastly, the Safari updates require a restart of your Mac, and sometimes even a double restart is required.

  • I need Safari download.

I need Safari download. One on my computer doesn't work but in App store no separate download for Safari. Have to install whole OSX. Very big thing to do for such a small problem.  Is there an individual download?

Safari for OS X is only available as an individual download for OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard and earlier
Now all Safari downloads are included with the OS
If you have a Time Machine Backup you can try to restore Safari from that.
If that doesn't work, reinstalling the OS from OS X Recovery is your only option
What's the problem you are having with Safari?

  • Cannot select the Safari Download button even though I can see it

I cleared the entries in my Safari Download button (not to be confused with the Downloads folder). Now this button is greyed and I cannot select it any more. Can anyone help?

Most likely problem is that the button disappears 'upon successful download' because your 'remove download list items' prefeference is set that way.  See below.. and set 'remove download list items' preference to either 'when safari quits' (like you see beow) or 'manual.'  Then the button will persist, and you can find the item easily until you quit safari .. or remove all items from the list manually .. depending on which of the two settings you choose.
I like the 'quit safari' option, because I don't have to do anything to keep the list small and usable; it is cleared out every time I quit safari.  And the files themselves persist in my downloads folder if I need to go find them later.
