Safari download speeds terrible compared to chrome

Downloading anything in Safari is SO much slower compared to chrome.
With safari, the max speed I'll get on any download of anything, from anywhere, is about 100kb/s. Switching to chrome straight after gives me my max speed of around 10mb/s.
Is there a fix for that?
Mavericks 10.9.4 - Mac Pro (Winter 2013), Macbook Pro Retina (Late 2012)

Uninstall the AdBlock extension.
That extension has caused many Mac users problems noted from the results of an ASC search here.
Then try a download.
Make sure you have Gatekeeper enabled prior to downloading content.
To avoid pop ups, go to Safari > Preferences > Security.
Select: Block pop-up windows
Issues with Safari for the most part are due to third party extensions and plug-Ins, not the app itself.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.

  • Where's the problem: Safari/Download Speed/ISP?

My connection speed has been shaped to 64kbps and something funny is now happening to my internet other than being slow. The thing is, I can handle the slow speed; what I can't handle is the download speed dropping to zero and staying there.
I have Menu Meters showing download speed in the Toolbar so that I can monitor what's happening. What I want to know is: why does connecting to a website be progressing well at 64 kbps, then drop to 0 after a minute or two? The internet connection itself is not lost. If I stop the download with the "X" in the address bar and the restart, the speed goes up to 64kbps again. I usually have several tabs open when I am in Safari so that I can jump between them when the speed is slow. But that doesn't work when the speed is zero.
I'm pretty confident that when I am unshaped at the start of the new billing cycle, and the speed goes back up to 3 Mbps, that things will return to normal.
Q1: Is this loss of connection caused by the slow speed? i.e. is the website saying to Safari: "Hey, the connection is too slow, I'm dropping you". A bit like an aircraft flying at too low a speed. It can't keep flying, it stalls.
Q2: Is this likely to be caused by time-out? i.e. the website saying "Hey, this is taking too long. Get lost!"
Q3: Is it a problem in Safari? I'll answer that one – not likely, because Google Chrome does the same thing.
As I said, slow I can handle. What I can't handle is nothing at all. Any suggestions as to the cause of this will be most appreciated. I am running Safari 5.1.4 under OSX 10.6.8 on an Intel iMac.
P.S. I just opened Activity Monitor and saw the Google Downloads is operational. Maybe that's hogging all the download speed. That leads to two more questions.
Q4. Is it possible to stop all internet traffic except via Safari?
Q5. How do I stop Google Downloads from downloading?

same problems on my systems still as well. none of the "fixes" work for me at all.
i've had to switch from safari(3.0.3) to firefox because of this.
i really would love to get back to using safari, since it's my browser of choice as well.
its going on over a month of this nonsense now.

  • Slow safari download speeds

While safari loads web pages very quickly, it is extremely slow when downloading documents, installers, etc... onto my computer, downloading at speeds around 5 to 10 kb/second, causing even small downloads to take ages. (A 20mb download can take up to an hour or more).
(My downloads run at about 100 to 110 kb/second on my windows PC which is connected to the same router)
I have tried stopping and then resuming downloads, but that doesn't work. Also, there is clearly nothing wrong with my internet connection, as safari loads webpages remarkably fast.
Is there any software/changes that need to be added or is it an issue within safari?

    Hi there Jeff,
The slow downloading speed and other performance issues with Safari may be related to unsupported third-party add-ons. Take a look at the article linked below and try to remove any outdated add-ons for Safari.

  • Virgin 100MB vs Safari Download Speed

    So...
I have a Virgin SuperHub with a 100Mb internet plan.
I'm trying to download Eve Online (7.44GB) but only reaching download speeds of 9-10Mbps.
Am I right in thinking my Virgin internet plan means I am able to download at 100Mbps?
I have checked my speed with SpeedTest.net and had 120Mbps.
I have looked in router setting for firmware upgrade but couldn't find it and all seems to be well as I'm getting the speeds on SpeedTest.net.
Is there something I can do to increase the speed with Safari?
    Thanks

Yup. No ISP, internet provider, lists their speeds in Mega Bytes. It is always mega bits.
Just like Ethernet connections 10mb 100mb and giga bit/1000mb. Then you divide that by 8.
So all in all you have a very fast connection. Mine is only 30mb over cable. Which is much better then the 3mb DSL connection I use to have.

So Virgin's internet service is in mega bits not Bytes? That would explain my conunrdum.

  • Safari download speed

Downloads on Safari are seeming sluggish, so I have been doing speed tests on my cable internet and find that the Safari downloads are 40-50% slower than the same tests run on Firefox. Any ideas of what to check? I am running a 2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo iMac w/4GB ram with my internet coming through an N enabled Airport Extreme base station.

    HI Jason,
Try maintenance and see if it helps...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
If Safari unexpectedly quits, it could be a 3rd party plugins causing the problem. Go to ~/Library/Internet Plugins. Move any 3rd party plugins to the Trash and restart your Mac.
Also, if you are running Safari in 64 bit mode, try running in 32-bit mode instead. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Quit Safari then relaunch.
While you have the Get Info window open for Safari, make sure it's not running in Rosetta.

Go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/ Move the Cache.db file to the Trash and restart your Mac.

  • IMac internet speed terrible compared with my pc

    Hi.
    I have an intel-based imac with OS X 10.5.2
the only problem i have with it is that the internet speed is terribly slow.
simple pages like blogs, wikipedia or even google can take very long to load.
my laptop pc, as well as other laptops and computers i have have no problems with the internet, everything goes pretty fast.
only the imac has this issue of a terrible internet connection speed.
any suggestions on how to resolve this?

How are you connected to the internet?
Is your system using a wi-fi network, an ethernet hub (shared)
or some other; and if so, have you tried the iMac by itself on
line direct without any other device, except for the modem or
    other ISP provided device?
There has to be a configuration setup difference in the iMac
and perhaps, depending on what your internet situation is,
that could be changed and the problem somewhat reduced.

  • Terrible download speeds - modem problem???

Hi there, I have recently complained to Telstra about the terrible download speeds and the lights on my modem (the the ethernet, wireless and internet always flashing green).  I have ADLS Elite which is a joke when it takes so long on most days to dlownload.  There was a problem with the line which they reckon they fixed but who knows.  Could it possibly be a problem with this modem?  I have had the same one for about 5 years now and I reckon it has been a problem from the start as my speeds have never really been very high.  I am tired of having to contact Telstra all the time and am seriously considering going elsewhere. I hope someone can help.  By the way the moedn is a Thompson Gateway. Thanking you. Regards Yvonne

If there is issues with the light, and they have ruled out an issue with the line (as in they say that has been resolved) then it is quite possible being 5 years old that it is a modem issue.
If you are still under contract then Telstra will usually replace your modem for no charge as they usually will cover it as a warranty replacement as long as you are still contracted with them...
As it is an ADSL connection there are many factors which can restrict your ability to get higher speeds, congestion on the line, noise on the line, distance from the exchange... so even if the modem is a part of it, being on an ADSL1 port instead of an ADSL2+ port, or you might be at a distance where lower speeds are all you will obtain...
I can get the frustration of having low speeds, however depending on what the issue is, even changing providers might not help with the connection, but I would suggest having a word with the Disconnection team, they are pretty good at resolving issues, they will see what they can do to get the connection fixed, if required they should also be able to arrange the replacement modem... Plus they are in Adelaide during normal hours, on 132200 and say "Disconnect" then "no" if you want to relocate.

  • Slow download speed on my macbook pro compared to windows.

    Hello,
When i use my macbook pro to download a file i hit very slow download speeds (50 kb/s tops), compared to fast download speeds in vista using boot camp (300 kb/s tops) and the same when i use my brothers PC.
Anyone know how i can fix this or why it might be happening?
    thanks

    Common strategies:
    * Use ethernet instead of wireless.
    * Get a better/upgraded ISP.
    * Get a better/upgraded router.
    * Get a newer mac.

  • Is Safari really lacking compared to Chrome?

For a while now I realize Apple has some work to do on Safari, which is my default web browser, V. 6.2.2... Too many times it's lacking compatibility with some sites, and now I found a glaring disadvantage of Safari, when compared to Chrome:
See below, a link to a (foreign language) video clip someone sent me, telling me it comes with subtitles. But I see no subtitles when I watch it in Safari. When I open the same link in Chrome, I have some options I don't have in Safari, one of them is "CC" which shows the subtitles...
Is Safari lacking, or am I lacking something here?

    You're not lacking anything
It may be more of a Flash issue then Safari. Flash is required for YouTube content.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
    Click: Remove All Website Data
Now open System Preferences > Flash Player then select the Advanced tab.
Click Delete All under Browsing Data and Settings
    Now empty the Safari cache.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Advanced tab.
Select:  Show Develop menu in menu bar
Now click Develop from the menu bar. From the drop down menu click Empty Caches.
Quit and relaunch Safari then try a video.
There's always the option to upgrade your OS X which in turn would update Safari to 8.0.3.
See if your Mac can run Yosemite v10.10 > Apple - OS X Yosemite - How to Upgrade
That would update Safari to v8.0.3.

I started downloading a rental movie on apple tv, but I live in a rural area with terrible Internet download speed...is there anyway to stop the download, and resume downloading, onto my iPad when I have access in an urban setting with high speed Internet?

Yes, to be honest I was a little surprised myself. But it absolutely didn't connect when plugged into the test socket (I even tried to force a connection from the Home Hub manager but it wasn't having it). It is definitely the master socket. The only extension is a small piece of (engineer installed) phone cable to link the hub and the master socket (because the socket and mains power are unhelpfully on opposite walls of the hallway).
I ran the Java download for Google anyway and it only took about an hour. The speedtester results are as follows:
Download speed achieved during the test was - 109 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :2560 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps
I don't as a rule disconnect / reboot the hub; today it has been dropping off on its own, while several days ago I tried a few reboots just to try and get a connection.
Additional info - my exchange is actually called Claypole Fenton (or vice versa). Whatever, my profile has probably been welded to 135k for days and days.
    Cheers
    Nick

  • Very slow DOWNLOAD speeds compared to other household computers?

I am connecting via Wireless. All other computers are connecting via wireless aswell. The same router is used for all computers. On all the other computers in the house, download speeds are up to 3 Mbps. On my computer, download speeds are up to 20-50 Kbps. I don't understand why. My download speed used to be 1 Mbps, and that changed about a month ago. I don't understand why. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!

I would have to disagree with ornahp.  Being a computer technician myself, it seems more likely that the computer experiencing the issue is configured differently (as Smith6612 indicated).
There could be several reasons why 1 computer experiences different download speeds compared to another.  Without knowing the specs, programs, and physical location of each computer and what is between the computers and router, there is no real way to give a difinitive answer/solution.
Also, how are you testing/monitoring your download speeds?  Are you downloading items from a website, downloading items through a torrent/magnet, using a speed test site?
Your computer could be infected with malicious software (virus, spyware, etc)
Your computer could have multiple "Auto-Update" programs running (Microsoft Updates, Adobe Updates, etc)
Your computer might be connecting using older technology (not likely, but possible) 802.11b compared to 802.11g
The times that you are download might be during higher traffic times causing more load on verizon's network, decreasing your speed.
Other computers on your network may be using bandwidth shrinking the access that you have.
These are only a few things that can affect download speeds.

  • Terrible download speed with Infinity 2 (less than...

I was a relatively early adopter of BT infinity.  When I first signup I recieved a consistent 70mbps+ down 80mbps up.
Over the last few months this has dropped to around 40mbps down and 12mbps up.
I posted here regarding the issue, contacted BT, and even Emailed the tech support guys recommended here on this very forum.
Unfortunately nothing improved, however since 40mbps down was okay for almost everything I needed to do I decided to leave it.
Now however, the situation has become dire.  For the last month my download speed has been consistently less than 4mbps with my upload speed being 2-3x as fast!
The BT speedtester refuses to complete due to the test taking too long. However I have managed to get a screenshot from speedtest.net.
To make matters worse, webpages down't always seem to complete, with many requests eventually timing out.
I am at a complete loss and would like some advice on where to go from here.  I have for all intents and purposes lost faith in the standard BT customer service having spent hours on the phone with them before when my speed dropped to 40mbps a few months ago.
Any advice would be very much appreciated.

    Hi
I also am having the exact same issue. I am on the phone now and they are telling me now that is all my line can handle.
This is disgusting, the service is disgusting, cannot get an engineer out. For over 10 months i could get 60mbps steady downloads now i can't
    even stream a youtube video!!
even though i have another infinity 2 line in the downstairs living room getting 65mbps steady downloads from the same exchange.

  • Terrible Download speeds in Hoboken, NJ on VDSL...

    Hello,
I'm on a VDSL setup in Hoboken and have been experiencing awful download speeds all day.  Upload speeds are at the normal 5MB range.
I'm provisioned for 20MB but usually get around 23-24MB DL speeds.  Today I'm lucky if I can get 4MB.  I've tried various speed tests, wireless and wired connections and haven't really changed anything about my setup.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

have you rebooted the vdsl modem when you were doing your reboots?

Just recently my download speeds will not go above 700mbps.  My router stats seem the same as usual:
But every speed test I have done recently puts my speed at lower than 700mbps almost as though my account has been restricted.  Is it possible the IP profile on my account may be wrong - any help would be appreciated.
