  • Drag File From Safari Download Window to Other Volume - Moves not Copies File - Bug or Feature ?

    Hi,
Appreciate comment on what I thought was unusual Mac OS behavior.  Running Safari 5.1.5, OS 10.6.8.
Mac OSs in my experience copy a file when it is dragged and dropped to another volume/drive. (Let's leave classic desktop out of this.)
It may be the first time I've ever done it in any version of Safari, but just dragged a file directly from the Safari Downloads panel onto another drive's icon - and it appeared to "move" the file from its original download destination to the other drive and not simply copy it onto the other drive.
Didn't look like a copy and standard Finder delete since I didn't see file in the trash, although it was gone from the finder window for the download folder (Desktop in my prefs), and afterwards Safari Download Window magnifying glass icon "can’t show the file “filename” in the Finder because “filename” has moved since you downloaded it." It's reproducible.
Assuming it's not unique to my configuration, is this a bug or "feature" ?
    Thanks.

    HI,
From the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Preferences then select the General tab.
You can deselect: Open "safe" files after downloading.

  • Where did the Safari Download window go?

I downloaded a file via Safari and the Download Window did not spawn. I clicked on Window and the Download item is gone.
Also, when I took this screenshot and tried to save it as a jpg image, the Save As option in Preview is gone and you must now use Export. Sadly, the Export options does not tell you what size the resulting file is.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Thank you!
Is there a way to get a separate window that is persistant and wont fade out when I click somewhere else?

  • Safari Downloads Window appears blank

While I am downloading something, anything, the downloads window in Safari appears blank. At the bottom of the window, it still says "Downloading 1 item" or whatever the exact words are, and the downloading object can be found in my downloads folder with the loading progress bar on it. The download completes just like normal, and all ends up well. But I don't know how to make the item come up in the downloads window. There is nothing listed although it is obviously downloading. Any help would be appreciated! Also, I am using Safari 4.0.4.

Well, I can't add much useful to this topic, but I just wanted to say that I've just found I have the same problem.
The only way to tell if my downloads are progressing or not is to keep checking the files themselves in Finder. A real PITA, that!

  • No Safari download window or options

    Hi-
Prior to re installing my OS 10.2.8, when I held the cursor on a link or picture, I would get a window with downloading options, as "copy link", "save location", "save as...", etc.
But now, with Safari and firefox, I get no window, nothing. I can drag the pic to the desktop, but if I drag the link to the desktop, all I get is the html tag, not what's at the link.
Any suggestions will be most appreciated.
    Thanks, coup

  • Safari download window - "Can't create file"

Hey, everyone. I tried to download a game patch the other day and when the download started and the Donwload window popped up...in grey letters the message was "Cannot create file." I just got the same message today when I tried to patch up some Recipe software. I reset Safari, but I'm not sure what's going on.

    If downloads aren't working
If you're having trouble downloading files, try these suggestions.
Choose Window > Downloads to view the list of downloaded files. Then:
Check to see if the file is still being downloaded.
See if downloading has been paused. If you see the Resume button (orange with a curved arrow) next to the file's name, click it.
If the file has been downloaded but you can't find it, click the magnifying glass beside the file's name. If you moved the file after it was downloaded, Safari won't be able to find it.
If you can't open the file, you may not have an application that opens it. Check the site where you downloaded the file for more information.
If you can't open the file with the application that created it, the file may have been corrupted during the download. Delete it and try downloading it again.
The downloaded file may be a compressed archive or disk image that contains the file you want. If the file is from a trusted site, double-click the file to decompress it.
You can have Safari automatically open certain types of files after downloading them. Click "Specifying how files are downloaded" under See also, below.
    Specifying how files are downloaded
You have some choices about how Safari behaves when you download files.
    To set download preferences:
    Choose Safari > Preferences.
    Click General.
Choose the settings you want. Click the Help (question mark) button to see an explanation of the options.
Changing your downloading preferences may change where other web browsers on your computer download files.
You can choose to open certain "safe" files after they are downloaded. Files considered safe include documents such as movies, pictures, sounds, PDF and text documents, and disk images and other types of archives.

  • Safari Download Folder

I accidentally removed the Safari download window from my Doc. Does anybody know how to put it back?

Click on the item in the Finder's sidebar with the house icon and drag the Downloads folder to the right side of the Dock.

  • Safari Download links not working, opening new page

Hi,  I am not to happy with the latest version of Safari, and it has made one problem worse.  When I click on a download link, more often than not, instead of getting a file to download, it opens a new page and appears to be loading the file as raw code.  I will see in the location bar at the top something like:
download.php or FileName.zip, and it cycles a while until the full file is loaded but does not show anything by a blank page...   Before this version I could right click and choose save linked file As and it would usually work, but now that doesn't work.
Anyone else seeing this problem or have a solution?
I have speed downloader but I have it turned off for sites that were problematic, but  Safari doesn' seem to use it anyway, because when it works, it opens a Safari download window, not SD
    Thanks
    Jeff

Quit Safari if it's running. Move the file
    Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
in your home folder to the Desktop. Test again. If downloading now works as expected, then that's where the problem lies. Otherwise, it's still somewhere in your Safari settings, but I wouldn't know where. You'd have to ask the "Speed Downloader" developer what to do next.

  • Safari for Windows 7 - Where can I get a safe download?

I want to download Safari for my Windows 7 PC.  I cannot find 5.1.7 on the Apple website.  Is that the one that I should be looking for?  If so, where can I get a download of it that won't include a bunch of garbage.
Or, if there is a version that I can download from Apple, which version should I choose?
A hyperlink would be greatly appreciated.

Safari for Windows was discontinued a couple years ago.  By now it's outdated, not standards compliant, etc..  There's no reason why you should use it.

  • Safari 6 bug (Can't download software files) - file not in download window

    Dear Everybody,
I insatlled Safari 6 and also afterwards ML, everything works fine on my macbook air but on my 2009 (early) iMac safari 6 has a severe problem. When I download software files such as a adove flash player dmg file, The file (link) loads in the browser bar until the blue bar reaches the right (not in download window) and then when it is done the browser window is black and the file is nowhere to be found?

Thanks Linc, that solved my problem - i had to re-download the SpeedDownload software and use the Uninstaller from there.
Seems SD isn't compatible with ML.

  • My school has a website.  The professor uploads files in Word.  When I click on the link at home using Pages, the download window opens with nothing in it and Safari opens with a blank in the address book.  What Could be wrong?  Wrong set up?

    Hi Jo,
If I'm interpreting this correctly, the Word file downloads correctly, but when you open it in Pages, the link(s) which your instructor has embedded in the Word file are not correctly translated into Pages.
If the link shows the actual address, you should be able to copy that and paste it into the location bar in Safari, press return, and get to the website that way.
An alternate route might be to download one of the open source Office applications, OpenOffice.org, LibreOffice, or NeoOffice. These are written to more closely emulate the behaviours of MS Word than Pages, and may provide better support for links embedded in Word files.

  • All files download INSIDE a Safari tab - not in Downloads window

One of my several Macs has now developed a very annoying problem. Anytime I click on any weblink that links to a file (say, a ZIP), that ZIP doesn't auto-open in Safari's Downloads window. Instead, Safari opens a new tab and tries to download it in a dark gray window, but never completes downloading the file. See the linked screenshot.
    http://www.daviddas.com/clients/safariproblem.png
I can't figure out how to fix it. Any help? (Note: if I copy the URL to the clipboard, open a new tab, and hit option-return, I can successfully force Safari to download it. However this is a tedious workaround every time I want to download a file, and it doesn't work when a more complex PHP app is not giving me the file's true URL.)

    HI,
Go to Safari/Preferences and click the General tab.
If you have the Safari preference "Open 'safe' files after downloading" selected, and Safari considered that a downloaded file was safe:
*Safari will automatically open the file after it's downloaded.*
*If the downloaded file is an archive (.zip file), Safari will decompress it.*
*If the downloaded file is a disk image (.img file), Safari will mount the image volume.*
*If Download Validation cannot determine that a downloaded file is safe, it will be stored in your default download directory just as if the "Open 'safe' files after downloading" preference was disabled.*
If Download Validation determines that a downloaded file is unsafe, you will be asked if you wish to download or cancel. If you download the file, it will be placed in your download location, as configured in Safari preferences. If you cancel, it will be saved as a web download in your download location, as configured by Safari preferences. It will be named the same as the original file with ".download" at the end of it. This can be moved to the Trash.

  • Safari cannot download Windows Media Player

When I try to download Windows Media Player for Mac on my iTouch the message says Safari cannot download it. Is there a solution to this problem?

The answer is in your question. The iPod touch (not iTouch) is not a Mac.
To play Microsoft's proprietary WMV format you need to convert them on your desktop computer to one of the many open standards the iPod touch can play.

  • Possible reset safari and downloads window bug

I have noticed, at different times on different macs...
Reset safari, open the downloads window and the items in there do not clear out. In fact, it takes two reset Safari's to clear them out. Now, I have them set to download to desktop and not the downloads folder. I can reproduce 1 out of 3 times.
    Safari 3.1.2 and Safari 3.2
    Message was edited by: powerbook1701

I have checked on multiple computers and even the Apple Retail store, the issue continues to happen, but there is no rhyme or reason what the trigger is:
I have noticed with Safari 3.2 and 3.2.1 that when resetting Safari, the downloads window does not always clear out. Upon an additional reset, the window does clear out.
If the downloads window was open, then you close it, reset safari, and then reopen the downloads window, whatever was there is still there (until you reset again).
