Safari extensions slowing down browser

Hi!
Lately, I've noticed a degradation of performance and speed in my Safari browser after installing a few extensions, but I just love my new extensions too much to remove them.
Safari 5 is great! It works speedily and powerfully and pulled me towards it away from Chrome and Firefox. However, lately, the lag and, the crashing and the poorer performance all together are really irritating me to the limits. Its strange how I am not one of those who completely redesign the browser with so many extensions. I'm actually far from that. I only have about four tweaks installed and I hate the behaviour I'm experiencing these days.
All Im asking is for a short-term fix to this error and, over time, a look into this by Apple for a permanent bandage to this glitch. I'm very sure they'll do this better than the rest very soon and am just waiting anxiously for results.

Deleting Safari caches like recommended will not help. Bad code of specific apps are the reason. Try this: deactivate ALL extension. Stop the time for the complete run of *SunSpider JavaScript Benchmark* http://www2.webkit.org/perf/sunspider/sunspider.html (MyMacbookPro Core2Duo 2.33Ghz, Safari_5.0.2: 18sec) and the note the result of the test (MyMacBookPro: 328,5ms +/- 0.7%. During the run monitor the CPU usage (MyMacBook: both Core are quite equally used, CPU-load floats from one to the other and back but never only one used and never more than approx. 80% of the possible 200%). Than switch on your first Extension (one after one and never two at the same time), Run SunSpider and monitor like recommended. Bad coded Extensions like AdBlock do influence run-through time of Sunspider like **** (MyMacbook with only AdBlock Extension activated: 1min34sec - compared against the 18sec without Adblock: 522% slower!!!!) and CPU-load (MyMacBook with AdBlock: 100%, one Core totally blocked - no more floating around between both Cores. The SunSpider results stay bretty pretty much the same (MyMacBookPro with AdBlock: 348,5ms +/- 13.4%). Bad Safari Extensions do extend the loading time of Java-Code dramatically (by over 500%) and do chance unfavorably the CPU-Load during the execution of the JAVA-Code. With other words: Bad coded Extensions are a bottleneck to push Java-Code from the Web to Safaris hyper-fast Java-Engine. As a result I did go back to the old standalone and SIMBL-based versions of AdBlock and ClickToFlash.

  • Safari suffering slow down when browsing Facebook

    Morning everyone,
Well what can i say, the title says it all.
When browsing Facebook with Safari (version 6.0.1) after about 10 minutes or so, Safari becomes very unresponsive, massive slow down, freezing, beachballing etc, any other sites im on whilst the Facebook tab is open also suffers too,
I use google chrome and its absolutely fine, so 2+2 being 5, im guessing its an issue with my Safari, maybe an installed plug in or something.
Any help resolving this would be greatly appreciated.
Its on a Macbook Pro Retina running ML 10.8.2
(Bit new to the mac so please be gentle ;-))
    thanks

  • Error message saying a script is running and is slowing down browser...stop script or continue?

While playing games my screen freezes up and a message pops up that says there's a script running which can slow down or stop my browser. Then it asks if I want to stop script or continue. I always click stop script, but it continues to happen periodically. (This is happening in Facebook, and sometimes MySpace).

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

  • Safari is slowed down with CGContextClipToRect: invalid context errors

Recently a new circle of **** has opened for me.  Whenever I launch Safari, it stutters along with frequent beach ball stalls.  Checking the Console log, I see a continuous stream of the following:
    5/10/12 9:53:20.397 AM Safari[4611]: CGContextClipToRect: invalid context 0x0
    5/10/12 9:53:31.285 AM Safari[4611]: CGContextClipToRect: invalid context 0x0
    5/10/12 9:53:31.285 AM Safari[4611]: CGContextTranslateCTM: invalid context 0x0
I've done the usual permission repairs, rebooting, etc. but to no avail.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Adblock plus pop-up addon 0.9.1 slows down browsing

yesterday i've updated firefox to version 29, and yesterday night i installed adblock plus pop-up addon and today pages, and games run very slow. i've disabled adblock plus and it seemes to work as before, but, the problem is that i find adblock plus very useful and i wouldn't like to remove it. what can i do about it? aside from disabling adblock plus, i've cleared cookies, bookmarks, history, etc. i don't think i should use the safe mode of firefox because i'd still be asked to remove and enable every other addon.
so, is there a way to keep adblock plus and make firefox run like before the update?

scratch this. i found the solution, or, at least, for me. a heavenly thought gave me the ideea to start a drive wipe with ccleaner. and it works all very fine now, including windows, firefox, etc.
so, if you have an issues like this, start ccleaner->tools->drive wiper->wipe ,free space only, -> and hit wipe.
    hope it helps others.

  • Why adobe flash player slows down all browser's performance?

I rememeber longer ago there were problems with flash player plugin inside Mozilla's Firefox browser causing the plugin to crash: Adobe Flash plugin has crashed - Prevent it from happening again | Firefox Help
After a recent update (17,0,0,134) it almost never crash but it slows down all browsers performance untill it finally launches next video. Almost the majority of all news sites use flash player
to launch its' commercial. And it has several such boxes with commercials, for example: www.lrytas.lt
And while I'm listening to music via youtube and on the other tab reading news on that site, when music clip ends and the browser starts to load other music videoclip,
then the whole browser's work is paralysed - I can't write text, cannot scroll down, cannot click any link. All this is because the system is busy while in youtube next clip is loading.
Mouse marker becomes into round rotating circle indicating loading procedure (firefox is not responding). And it takes time - up to 10-15 seconds to launch new video. Then sudenly all my actions is executed after such pause - my text is typed,
my scroll down  and maybe link is pressed. All this slowing down procedure is annoying. It wastes a lot of time. I open task manager and I see that Firefox is taking 900.000 or 1300.000 K of memory. My OS is Windows 7.
I close whole firefox.exe process and then it automatically close plugins. Then I open the browser again and it ask to automatically recover interrupted sites, I agree with it and then it opens everything again. And again
it is working continuously for some time untill slows down browser again. With more tabs more problems. Moreover, view of a video sometimes comes too late too. Some images are lost as system is too late already because
loading procedure took too much resources.
Long long ago flash player was better. But today with a rise of new ****** substandart computers like iphones ipads you have to evolve the player in such a way that it has to play on everything, but its performance on different platforms
    is not the same.
Who is guilty - my PC, Firefox or the plugin? Or maybe I am?
In My Cold Opinion, users actions can't be ignored. The preference should be user's continuous control over a system load.

You are right about high CPU usage. It was even when playing various computer games. I don't have problems anymore. But not because I disabled all addons. I did these things:
In the Location bar, type about:config and press Enter. The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear. Click I'll be careful, I promise! to continue to the about:config page.
Search for dom.ipc.plugins.flash.disable-protected-mode in the list of preferences.
Double-click on the preference to toggle its value from false to true. (If the setting is already true it means that Flash Protected Mode is currently disabled.)
    Close Firefox.
    Restart Firefox.
And since then I don't have that particular problem with overloading. I just disabled some of flash protected mode. How is that related with "overloading"? Strage. Hardware acceleration I've enabled again as without it whole text field in news sites is sometimes black.
    Thanks anyway Mr.

  • Why does Safari v5.1.9 slow down?

I recently switched from Firefox to Safari v5.1.9 because I found Firefox too slow.  Now it seems that Safari slows down a lot over time.  Scrolling becomes jerky and sometimes pauses.  Pages don't load/pause and I have to stop loading and restart loading.  I have a white Macbook circa 2008 with Snow Leopard v10.6.8 installed with all available updates installed.  I am running the current version of Safari v5.9.1 for Snow Leopard.  If I quit Safari and restart it, the software goes back to normal speed.  I often have 11+ tabs open and almost never shut down and restart my machine.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

Thanks for your response.  This morning I did some experimenting.  I ran the Activity Monitor and checked memory usage when Safari had run since yesterday, then I quit Safari and checked, and finally I restarted Safari and checked a 3rd time.  Below is a chart I made of the memory usage where the first number is prior Safari, the second number is without Safari, and the third number is after rerunning Safari.  BTW:  I have 4 GB RAM installed and have 12 tabs open in Safari.  Oh, and when I restarted Safari, 5 of the 12 tabs would not reload.  I had to close the tabs, open new ones and go back to the web sites manually.
Application - Prior Memory Usage - After Restart of Safari
Safari Web Content 1.10 GB - 441.9 MB
    Safari 236.8 MB - with 12 tabs open - 230.8 MB
Flash Player (Safari Internet plug-in) 116.2 MB - 59.6 MB
Memory when computer opened from sleep - after quitting Safari - after restarting Safari
    Free: 664.6 MB - 2.27 GB - 1.69 GB
    Wired: 453.7 MB - 448.7 MB - 452.3 MB
    Active: 2.42 GB - 847.8 MB - 1.53 GB
    Inactive: 498.0 MB - 471.5 MB - 337.1 MB
    Used: 3.35 GB - 1.73 GB - 2.31 GB
I seems pretty clear to me that Safari uses an extraordinary amount of memory over time and it keeps taking more causing Safari to slow down.  This is what a memory leak looks like.  It's hard to believe that Safari is so buggy when it has been revised so many times.
Thanks again for your idea.  I guess the only solution is to periodically quit Safari and restart it.  I think I will check Firefox memory usage later today to see if I should switch back.

  • Why is my Safari so slow

I have recently upgraded to Tiger. Since doing so, web pages loading on Safari have slowed down drastically. Navigating from one web page to another has become painfully slow whereas it was almost instant previously (we have an excellent broadband service).
    I run a 17 inch G4 Powerbook with 1 GB RAM.
Can I do anything to speed up my web access?

AxL wrote: "Then you can of course "Reset Safari" (in the Safari menu). This will get rid of all old caches that you don't use/visit anymore."That's dangerous advice.
Do not use "Reset Safari" unless you are prepared to lose all Internet passwords saved in your keychain.
"Reset Safari" is intended for clearing personal information that may have been saved while using a public Internet terminal running Safari. While it can be used as a Safari troubleshooting action of last resort, it was not designed with that intent and one should backup their keychain first. See the AppleCare Knowledge Base document “Safari 2.0 Help: Resetting Safari.” Unfortunately, Reset Safari cannot be undone.
Two other ways to speed up Safari:
    • Empty it's cache: Command-Option-E.
    • Quit and relaunch it if you've had it open for several days and visited many sites.
    Good luck!

  • Mountain lion update slowed down my macbook pro

    hey guys,
I just updated to mountain lion
however, after the installation, my macbook pro has been noticably slow.
slow booting, slow when operating installed programs, chrome/safari got slowed down as well.
Also it freezes for couple of seconds and i was wondering why.
If any of u r experiencing same problems or know how to fix it please kindly let me know!
    Thank you!

Have tried everything possible, repairing permissions etc to no avail.
You haven't tried everything possible or you would have a solution.  If you tried the most extreme possible solution (erasing the hard drive, then reinstalling the system and nothing else) and still had the same problems, you would have discovered that you almost certainly have a hardware problem.  For some solutions that you haven't tried yet, I'll refer you to the same two links I referred sylee48 to.
As for that article, that's an extremely unprofessional piece of writing.  They publish - as if they were fact - the conclusions of untrained, non-technical users who do not have the necessary expertise to make such conclusions.  And they concluded that these were bugs that Apple should be working on.
In fact, this may be one of the smoothest upgrades I've seen in a while.  (Boy-oh-boy, you should have seen the screaming here for the Snow Leopard and Lion upgrades!  It's positively peaceful in this forum compared to that.)

  • Safari 4 slow, crash, shutdown problems? Three solutions to try...

There are many posts addressing Safari 4's slowness and worse. I had these problems and cured them with three fixes:
    1. Empty Cache periodically - Still tried and true. For me, a blank screen trying to load is the cue to empty cache - page then pops.
    2. Turn off Top Sites. This "enhancement" consumes time and takes hard drive space. Someone suggested turning it off and then getting rid of the files (not folders) it had set aside. (They are located in home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Webpage Previews.) I found almost 3,000 files consuming about 600 MB residing there! They are simply saved web pages, so no hidden risks from deleting them. The next thing to do is keep Safari from saving new webpages. I found the simplest solution is to click on "Website Previews," then Get Info and change permission to "Read Only." I did these Top Sites actions in July. It really helped and I've had no problems.
Then, my Safari started slowing down again, frequently getting hung up (requiring Force Quit), and even crashing. Also, my computer was running hot. I turned on Activity Monitor in the Dock with CPU usage showing and saw the CPU was being driven up to 100% by some websites. Businessweek.com became my test site because it was so slow and invariably crashed Safari after a short while. The key seemed to be the number of Flash videos a webpage was trying to load, so I started a search for a cure. That led me to...
    3. Install ClickToFlash (http://rentzsch.github.com/clicktoflash/). You can find others who have recommended it in the Apple discussions and elsewhere. Easy to download, it's unobtrusive and IT WORKS! Now, those Business Week pages load quickly with four(!) little white boxes labeled "Flash". There is a gear that gives you options: load flash, load all on this page, add -site- to whitepage (meaning always load flash on this website - this whitepage list can be edited), and ClickToFlash settings. It's quick and easy to turn on a flash. Now, my Activity Monitor hardly moves, and my computer runs cool.
Hope these help for you. For me, these solutions have cured my Safari problems - at least until Apple releases a new upgrade or version.

    1. Go to Home/Library/Cookies and delete the Cookies.plist file.
    2. Go to Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
    3. Go to Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Web Page Previews and delete the contents of that folder.
    4. If you don't want to use the Top Sites or Cover Flow features, open Terminal and paste in this command:
defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSnapshotsUpdatePolicy -int 2
then press Enter or Return and quit Terminal
    5. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
    6. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Safari and delete the contents of that folder.
    7. Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete these files (if you have them):
    Downloads.plist
    History.plist
    Form Values
    LastSession.plist
    WebpageIcons.db
Then Repair Permissions, and restart Safari.

  • How do I fix a Safari application that slows down and freezes everything?

Apple called last fall and said my particular Mac had a hard disk problem and they replaced it at the Apple store in late January 2013.  I backed up the information on an external harddrive and used Time Machine before to transfer all the information to the new drive. Everything worked well and I finally put on Mountain Lion at 10.8.4.  I also have Carbonite as a backup and it apparently was not enabled when I transferred the files until early May.  In early May I had not used my iMac for about a month and when I started it I found about 40 named file folders on the Desktop that were empty.  Some of those had named items in them but when I clicked on them they would dissappear.  The actual files did exist and were not effected when I dumped the apparent alias folders. Safari started and would be ok at first but if I went away for an hour it would slow down.  I took it in to the Genius Bar at Apple and they ran some tests and got rid of MacKeeper which they felt was causing the problem.  I got my Mac back home and it still started slow but worked well at first and then started going slow.  If I opened Word it would also start working at a slower speed.  I needed to force quit Safari and the Word progran in order to quit or restart the Mac.  I got an appointment for the next day and they ran all sorts of tests and the hard drive was working normally. They tried tweeking different areas and sent me home again.  When I started working again it did the same thing, I would start out fine and eventually slow down and needed to be force quit to get out of it. A message came up indicating my MasOSX startup disk had no more space available for applications memory.  I took it in a third time and the Genius went to the Activity Monitor and the Safari PID was 221 and %CPU 107, Threads 21 Real Mem 2.73 GB, Virtual Mem 22.00 Kind, Intel (64).  I had no idea what that meant. I went home again and it still ran slow and couldn't run the programs for any length of time before it ran slow and affected the other programs so they would only quit if I used Force quit.  I took it in for the forth time an they decided to keep it overnight. They ran ASD first to rule out memory.  They noticed during the appointment the computer was slow to perform normal tasks such as showing boot options, booting into user, bootingto external user.  If the ASD passed then they would perform erase and install and only restore users and application files from backup drive.  They did this on Wed and Thur. night and I took it home Friday night, June 14 and it still has the same problem. Typing this message right now means typing and waiting for the words to appear.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open. Post the contents of that window, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; } | open -f -a TextEdit
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}' | open -f -a TextEdit
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' | open -f -a TextEdit
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.
