Safari extremely slow....help!

I just installed Leopard today after hesitating for a long time.
Never had any problems with Safari on Tiger, the browser was always extremely fast.
After installation from the DVD (10.5.1) and the upgrade (combo) via "software update" to 10.5.3, Safari all of a sudden is extremely slow.....most websites just don't load (blue line in address just keeps hanging). Sometimes, after easily 1 minute, the page is finalle loaded, most of the time just nothing happens!!!
Before Safari used to be very fast for all websites....any help would be really appreciated!
Thank you very much!
Sven

The number one cause of problems after a major update like Leopard is the presence of third party add-ons or plugins that are not compatible with the new update. This is doubly true when dealing with Safari issues. So I guess the first question we need to ask is what sort of Safari add-ons, enhancers, plugins, etc. do you have installed on your machine? There are several places to look.
/Library/Internet PlugIns (this is the Library folder in the top level of your hard drive)
~/Library/Internet Plugins (where ~ is your user folder)
/Library/Input Managers
~/Library/Input Managers
It's also a good idea to make a note of what add-on you installed and when. Then you have a list of "suspects" to question when things go goofy.
As another poster suggested you can try booting into "safe" mode by holding down the Shift key while booting. This starts a sequence of clearing caches and other maintenance processes and will sometimes clear up trouble. Safe mode also does not load any third party extensions. If your problem is cleared by booting in safe mode then you can almost be certain that your trouble lies with one of the add-ons or extensions installed.

  • Safari too slow - help finding a bug?

    Hi all,
Sorry for such a noob question, this is a problem I never have myself. My wife's iMac (10.4) is running Safari extremely slow. This occurred when we were out of town and our inlaws were house-sitting.
My inlaws have been known to (inadvertently) change settings and download things they should not. (Flash players or radio listening programs, etc). I'm betting something similar happened, but couldn't find anything in the surfing history since it was too much to go through. Other ideas?
Ran Onyx and all that is clean, btw. I've never needed any other anti-malware software myself...
(As a sidenote, would upgrading to 10.5 make a difference?) I have an unopened copy of Leopard - Server (I don't need the server part) at my disposal. What needs to happen for that?
    Thanks so much,
    -josh

    HI,
Try uninstalling then reinstalling a new copy of the Adobe Flash Player plugin.
How to Uninstall Flash plug in
How to reinstall Flash plug in
    Try Safari maintenance also.

From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache.
When you are done with that...

from the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Mac OS: Web Browser Quits Unexpectedly or Stops Responding
Safari add-ons can cause performance issues or other situations

Repair disk permissions:

Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
*As for Leopard... minimum requirements are as follows:*
an Intel processor or a PowerPC G4 or G5 processor
    a DVD drive
    built-in FireWire
at least 256 MB of RAM for a PowerPC based Mac, and 512 MB for an Intel-based Mac
a built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
at least 6 GB of disk space available, or 8 GB if you install the developer tools
Upgrading from one Mac OS X to another does not necessarily "fix" bugs. It's better to trouble shoot and make sure the drive is ok before upgarding. You can boot from the install disk that came with the iMac to do that.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
    As for Leopard Server:
Mac OS X Server is a UNIX server operating system from Apple. The platform is based on the same architecture as Mac OS X, but includes additional services, applications, and administration tools for managing users and services and for deploying servers and clients. The server operating system is included on Xserve, a rack mount server designed by Apple. It is also available preinstalled on the Mac mini and Mac Pro and is sold separately for use on any Macintosh computer meeting its minimum requirements. *Mac OS X Server is commonly found in small business, education, and large enterprise organizations.*

While 4GB may have been fine with Snow Leopard or Lion, that was 4 years ago.
If you have never done a clean install consider doing one. Backup, clone, setup a USB installer and wipe the system. Or wait for the new internal 500GB drive (so you are back to using about 50%) to do a clean install and run Setup Assistant. You would be surprised how even just that can feel and run.
RAM is pretty much a given so when you do, look at putting a 500GB SSD in there as well.

  • Safari extremely slow

For about a week now a large number of sites have been extremely slow. I try reloading them, etc. which sometimes helps, but it just isn't running smoothly like it used to. I tried resetting it, emptying the cache, and nothing seems to help. I had hoped that when the new system update was installed it would fix it.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    <Edited by Moderator>

    I have tried everything too!
    Maybe not!
The following usually works on both Tiger and Leopard:
(First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl.)
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
    form values
    download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.
If not, MacFixit have published a very detailed (very!) article on speeding up a slow Safari, here:
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070416000657464
Many, including me, have also followed the advice given by others here to add DNS codes to their Network Settings, with good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
    Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
If none of that worked, run the 10.5.4 combo updater again, as this contains the Safari update for Leopard.

  • Safari extremely slow and pages load with errors

Not sure if this is related to other Safari posts, but when I try to load a page from many sites, including this one, the speed is extremely slow and there are invariably errors reported on the bottom status bar. I'm on a new Mac Pro, and I haven't added any add-ons to Safari or changed system settings. My internet connection is DSL on ethernet, and there are no problems with email or on my old G4 using Explorer 5.1. At this point G4's Explorer is light years faster than Safari on this machine. I'm going to try Mozilla Firefox, but is there any hope for Safari?
    Thanks,
    Peggy

    Hi Peggy
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Try this to speed up Safari.
First, make sure you are not using Rosetta. Go to Safari's info panel (Application folder>Safari.app>Single click>Apple Key I). If Rosetta is selected, uncheck it.
    Network Connection
Go to the System Preferences>Network panel
    - Location - set up a personal location by clicking on the drop down menu and selecting "add a location". Use a name familiar to you. Once established, select "apply".
    - Next, click on the "Show" drop down menu and select Network Port Configurations. Only Ethernet ought to be checked. Move it to the top of the list (you can drag it). Select "apply".
    - Back to the "Show" menu, depending on your connection select "Ethernet". Click on the TCP panel. There, enter 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 (separate lines) in the DNS servers box and select "apply".
Creating a personal location, plus adding the DNS codes seems to speed things up. Otherwise, the "automatic" function has a tendency to "search" for available locations.
In the Finder, go to your Utilities folder and select "Terminal". Once the screen is open enter lookupd -flushcache and press return. This clears out the DNS cache. Once done, quit Terminal.

  • Safari extremely slow 200kB/sec

I have upgraded my Macbook pro 15 inch to Lion yesterday. Today I started to notice extremely slow loading of safari pages and slow downloads (200kB/sec). My macbook pro 13 inch still on snow leopard remains at normal speeds (3500kb/sec).
    Any ideas?

It appears to be the wifi on the lion Macbook pro that is working slow. Internet through a wire works very fast on the macbook pro 15 inch.
On the snow leopard 13 inch, wifi and wired works perfectly.
Why is the Wifi doing this?

  • Macbook Pro running extremely slow, help?!

Of course, the curse of finals week strikes. As of a few days ago I woke up one morning and my computer started running really slow. It takes forever to restart, open tabs on the internet, switch between applications... everything. I always get the spinning wheel and it drives me insane. I have been reading a few posts, but I think it would be better to get some knowledge on what is actually wrong with my laptop. Any help is very much appreciated... coming from a stressed out college student!!!

  • Safari extremely slow after update?

Posting this for a friend using OS 10.5.8
"I have noticed my Safari suddenly seems very slow.
It shows ‘Loading’ in the box that also shows ‘RSS feed’ in black (that’s normal), but once it goes to the page required, it still shows ‘loading’ but this time it's greyed out.
Sometimes it goes away in a few seconds, other times it remains there.
This has only started happening today. Yesterday I did a software update for it – it was Safari and ProKit (‘fraid I don’t know what ProKit is).
Have you any ideas/can you help at all?"
    Any suggestions appreciated
    Ian

    HI,
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues

Web pages now include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the address bar and next to bookmarks. These icons take up disk space and slow Safari down. It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. *To delete Safari's icon cache using the Finder, open your user folder, navigate to ~/Library/Safari/ and move this file "webpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
    bpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
Make sure Safari is not running in Rosetta. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle so it faces down. Where you see Open using Rosetta... make sure that is NOT selected.
If Safari's performance is still on the slow side, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If Safari runs as it should, move that .plist file to the Trash.

  • Safari extremely slow after 10.5.4 upgrade

After recently updating to 10.5.4 Safari has become a problem.
I use Airport Extreme connected to an ADSL router and this has always worked brilliantly, but since the latest update Safari is not downloading internet pages with the same reliability or speed.
This is not due to 10.5.4 affecting the wireless network as Firefox has no such problem. The broadband speed tests results I am getting demonstrate this.
    Safari Version 3.1.2 (5525.20.1): line speed is 301 kbps (0.3 Mbps) & download speed is 38 KB/s (0.04 MB/s).
    Firefox: line speed is 1.48 Mbps (1478 kbps)& download speed is 185 KB/s (0.18 MB/s).
I have repeated this test probably half a dozen times over the past two days and get the same result.
I have run repair permissions - still have this problem.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions

hi i had your exact same problem

  • Safari extremely slow opening one web page, Firefox not.

Safari takes 25 seconds to open (http://www.caarc.ca/news.php) or from the same site, (http://www.caarc.ca/e107plugins/forum/forumviewforum.php?2 ) , while Firefox takes less than a second.
    I have implemented the following from forum discussions;
    - Installed the open DNS Servers
-Reset the top 5 buttons for Safari reset
-tried changing from 64 to 32 bit
    -Rosetta is not installed
    - checked the ~library... etc for plugins, there are none.
It is probably something form this site or similar sites but there must be a fix
    Thanks for any help

Both sites opened nearly instantaneously for me. However I have constant problems with websites like eBay and others. The open DNS server thing doesn't work. It's a Microsoft-like workaround that I think is bogus and is a strawman by certain individuals that inhabit this board to make it seem like Apple does no wrong. Safari has its issues, one of which is this random issue with opening websites.

  • MacBook Pro 13" extremely slow, help!

I bought the mac last summer (2012) and it's been flawless up until a short while ago. It's an i5 with 4gig ram and 500 HDD.
Of the two USB ports, the one closest to me stopped working less than a month ago (this is not the issue I want help with though, just mentioning it as it might be related somehow). A week later, I upgraded to Mavericks and everything remained the same. Computer was fine (except the usb port), then one night the computer crashed while I was using a music production program (which I've been using daily since I got the mac).
This is when the mac started going slow.
Starting the computer up now took 4-5 minutes and there was no point trying to open an application. I managed to back everything up (though it took about 15 minutes just to select all files, then two-three hours to move them to the external drive) and started the process of reinstalling OS X. I formatted the drive, which was a fairly quick process. Installing OS X however, took about 12-13 hours! So yeah, I'm pretty sure it's a problem with the hard drive.
After OS X was installed, the computer was faster than before but still slower than pre-Mavericks. Even though I just formatted everything, I decided to repair permissions on the drive and it repaired 4 errors. It didn't make the computer much faster though. I can however use the computer now, but it is still laggy and sometimes slow. Booting up the computer now only takes 1-2 minutes.
So what do you guys think? Is it definitely a hardware problem or is there something I haven't done that might fix it? As I said it's faster than before I reinstalled the OS X but I still won't be able to use a music production app, it is too slow for that.
    I appreciate any answers!

    1. Go to Finder> Click on "Go" from Menu Bar at the top of the Computer Screen> Select Computer from Drop Down Menu> Select Macintosh HD> Select /Library Folder> Select Caches Folder and Move it to Trash
    2. Go back to "Go" in the Menu Bar at the Top of the Screen> Hold the Option Key on the Keyboard and select the Library Folder that appears under Home in the Drop Down Menu> Select Caches Folder and Drag to the Trash and select Merge
    3. Go to Black Apple in the top left of the Computer Screen> Select System Prefrences from Drop Down Menu> Go To Users & Groups in fourth Row of Icons> Select Login Items at the top of the new Window> Clear out an unnecessary Programs by highlighting the Program and selecting the "-" at the bottom of the window next to the '+"
    4. Go back to the Black Apple and then select Shutdown from the Drop Down menu
    5. When Turning Computer Back on Boot into Safe Mode (Hold Shift Key after hearing the Startup Noise) Release Shift Key when you see Apple with Spinning Gear and Progress Bar underneath> Once at Login Screen Select shutdown Computer in Bottom Right of Screen
    6. Now unplug any Preferral Devices (including Ethernet Cable, Keyboard, ext...) Take Plug out of the Back of the Computer this is known as reseting the SMC
    7. Plug Everthing back in you unplugged, Turn on Computer, When you hear Startup Noise Hold Down all at the same time Command+Option+P+R, if you do this correctly the Screen should go Black, then White and make the Start up Noise Again, when you hear the Startup Noise for a Third Time, you can remove you hands from the Keyboard
    8. Login like Normal
    9. Continuation... If you have any Third Party Software such as Norton Anti Virus, MacKeeper (Malware), or any other types of Anti Virus software, Remove these from the Computer
    10. If those Troubleshooting Steps should fail, Verify and Repair Disk from Recovery HD,  Re Install OS from Recovery Partition as mentioned by Kappy, If you are running anything less than 6GBS of RAM, consider updating your RAM, if Re-Install does not Work, Make a back up of your Data, and then perform an Erase and Install

  • CS6 Photoshop [EXTREMELY] slow, help?

Greetings, fellow users of the Adobe Community
My name is Mark and currently I am studying in the Netherlands (whereas I live in) and I am following an education that revolves around Creative Suite 6, making use of programs such as Photoshop and Illustrator. I've received the official package for my education from the school (that holds a key to use the pack for one concecutive year) which I am currently using. It worked out all fine, until I had a problem with Photoshop. The most simple actions there are (such as setting up a gradient) is extremely time consuming, and I have absolutely no clue what to do. Not even the teachers at my school know what the problem(s) is/are, and of course, neither do I. I decided to wait for a couple of days and hovered over to the Adobe Community and hope, that the users have had experience, or know the solution to this problem. I have ensured you lot to send over a some pictures, so that there may be a general understanding of the problem that I have. For those with the solution of something related to the 'Scratch Disk' being full, I am certain that that is not the problem as I have enough disk space left.
I would like to thank everyone in advance and please, let me know if you possess a solution!
    - Mark

EDIT: I have the solution, for some utter reason it stood on Millimeters instead of Pixels, I absolutely no clue why it was in that stance. Pardon me for the inconvenience!
    Hello Curt Y,
(Just a quick heads up, I'm a real nobhead when it comes to computer but I'll try to give up as much information as I can!)
    What version?
By version I'm presuming what version of the OS i'm running, it's OSX Mavericks
    How much RAM?
    8 GB (2 slots)
How much free space on drives?
Working with only one drive, 14,39 GB free space
How large of an image are you working with?
The one in the image was 2560x1600, but it happens with all formats, no matter the size
Does this happen if you have an image with more background layer with another layer?
I don't understand this question, sorry.
What is extension, bit mode, and is it RBG?
    .PSD,
    8bit
    RGB Color
    Hope it's useful to you
