Safari/Firefox - Failed to open page

Since I upgraded to Snow Leopard there have been a radical increase in the amount of times Safari AND Firefox cannot find the server of a webpage, to the point where 3 out of 10 pages load first time. It is incredibly annoying especially when I am trying to access a secure page.
Another problem would be that in some cases when a webpage does connect, none of the images or fonts load, making it difficult to navigate.
AND the iTunes Store has a similar problem where a network connection error is constantly coming up...
PLEASE HELP ME! I am starting to tear my hair out at this!
Thanks in advance

Question on the Open DNS setup you link - Why if it is an Airport network would one change the DNS in the Ethernet tab?
It's an error on the OpenDNS page that I've tried without luck to get them to fix for over a year.
Instead of selecting "Ethernet," select whichever interface you are using to connect to the Internet - Ethernet, AirPort, etc.

  • Safari fails to open pages

    Hi all,
Hope somebody can help me with this small problem I've encountered with Safari: lately it fails to open pages. This has been going on for about two weeks now; I can't say if this problem is a result of updating to 10.4.9. because recently I also started using the OnyX maintenance application.
When clicking a link in Safari, I often get this message:
"Safari can’t open the page “http://..." The error was: “bad server response” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1011) Please choose Report Bug to Apple from the Safari menu, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message."
Any ideas on how to fix this problem?
    Cheers!

    Hello to both of you...
I agree sometimes you need to hit the refresh button and it might work. As a general rule I don't experience this problem unless I'm having network issues or if I would open many tabs at once I might have to refresh a few...
As for the browser I agree there are times Firefox has an advantage or two over Safari. Remember Safari is not a Gecko browser but based on KHTML...so it is a different browser all together. I think most people on this forum do keep Safari and a Gecko browser on hand to take care of any situation they would encounter on the web. Personally I use Camino instead of Firefox because it's faster and it's written in Cocoa therefore it looks much nicer. However Firefox does have advantages as well...
    Hope that helps a bit?

  • Safari "Failed to open page" errors

What would cause Safari to suddenly start getting "Failed to open page" errors from I web-site I was successfully browsing 2 minutes ago?
I was browsing REI.com; viewed several different pages, then tried to go to a different REi.com page and all of a sudden Safari won't load the page. and reports a "Failed to Open Page" error, with the excuse "the server where this page is located isn't responding"??
I thought maybe my internet connection had failed, but I tried some other sites cnn.com, apple.com and everything is just fine.
Then i went to a different computer on the same network and tried rei.com from Firefox and its just fine.
    Any ideas or suggestions?

If your Safari won't open, one or more of the following procedures should fix it:
    1. Go to Home/Library/Safari/ folder and remove the following two files:
    ¥ history.plist
    ¥ lastsession.plist
(Safari may not load properly If these two files are corrupted.)
    2. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/ and remove the contents of that folder.
(These are just webhistory files and are not required for Safari to run. However, similar to preference files, problems can arise if they have become corrupt.)
    3. Locate the cookies.plist file that's located in the Home/Library/Cookies/ folder and remove it.
(Again, faults in stored cookies may interfere with Safari's launch.)
    4. Check whether any of your third-party internet plug-ins may be interfering with the launch of Safari by carefully moving them to the desktop (do NOT delete them at this stage). You can find these in two places:
Home/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ folder, and Global plug-ins are located in the Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins/ folder.
Also look in Library/Input Managers where other third party add-ons may lurk. If you find a SIMBL folder, please note that some SIMBLE.bundles may require updating or possibly removal.
Restart Safari and place them back in the correct folders, one at a time, closing and re-opening Safari each time. If you discover that one of them was causing the problem with launching Safari, trash it and download and install a fresh copy.

  • HT1338 Error message : "Failed to open page" - Slow & failed loading online pages

Lately I've been experiencing slow loading pages when I go online using Safari (that's all I usually use). Everything is updated. I often get the "Failed to open page" because it doesn't always even load. It stays blank for sooooo long then error messages appear "Failed...." Plenty of memory. Even while I type this the wheel begins to spinn, making me wait before I can complete this form. What can I do next? I use iCloud these days. Before iCloud I didn't have this problem, could there be a connection?

  • "Failed to open page" keeps happening and happening!

[ Edited by Apple Discussions Moderator; Please start a new topic about your technical issue. ]
I updated to Safari 2.0.3 with OS 10.4.5
Now, repeatedly, when I go to all sorts of web pages, I get the dreaded "fail to open page" message.
Almost universally, if I then hit the refresh button, the page appears instantly!
Don't know if this is the general pattern or not, but it seems particularly to occur with the first visit to an old site, meaning a bookmarked page that I hadn't yet visited with 2.0.3. Subsequent visits seem to then load quickly.
Any ideas what's gone wrong here or how to fix it?
I updated Safari Enhancer to the latest 3.3, tried the sequence of unplugging cable modem and Airport Express and restarting Airport and Safari, and just now emptied the cache.

I appreciate the suggestions here, but I'm leery of doing them!
I'd have to dig up my old install disks... (where did I put them? and they are an earlier version of Tiger and then my Safari version would be out of date... and then I'd have the interesting dilemma of trying to update just Safari--and the concern, however unfounded, of things being out of whack.
I've had also hassles in the past of doing a complete reinstall, too. Where certain settings seem to be lost in the ether and then the replacements are hard to track down! I'd anticipate losing a day to trying to fix that! And I'd have to follow that up with re-installing all the recent updates (OS and security ones)-- and that's a labyrinth I'd just as soon avoid!
I'm hoping that the latest security update will have included some tweaks to Safari that will fix this (wishful thinking on my part no doubt)...
in the meantime, until it starts bugging me even more, I'd rather live with the occasional page not loading (and having to refresh) than embark on the piecemeal update of Safari or the complete re-install and then having to update that.
But if some other intrepid soul would like to try it--and report back here--and if it works--then maybe I'll be adventurous--but only on my day off--and with lots of snacks to gnosh on and podcasts to play in the background on my Palm while my Mac is out of commission!

  • Safari 3.2.1 Can't open the page/failed to open page

Hi I have a MacBokPro and MacBook. Many websites now fail to open in Safari while the same pages on my Windows XP machine using Internet Explorer work fine. This is really frustrating. I have emptied the cache and also reset Safari but it makes no difference. Also there are no parental controls set so it can't be that. I think these problems are recent as it seemed ok before. Lots of sites including apple resgietr sites dont work..not just secure sites. Any ideas anyone?

Safari can be fussy about DNS settings. Try using OpenDns. These settings will speed page loading and provide an extra layer of anti-phishing protection.

  • Firefox fails to open 'login page' links on certain websites

If I go to a site that requires some login script, firefox fails to load the page... or doesn't even try to load said page.
An example of this is when I go to newegg.ca and attempt to login, there is no issue getting to the homepage, but clicking on the login link at the very top of the page yields no results, it just appears the current page reloads.
It happened again trying to get through this help site, I couldn't get past 'ask a question' page, hence why I'm now doing it in Chrome.
I've uninstalled firefox completely and reinstalled, all with the same results. Firefox 4 on my PowerBook works fine however.

Are you using an NTLM proxy? There is a known problem with that which will be fixed in beta 7. This thread has more details - [/questions/751415]

  • Yosemity safari https can´t open page

When our users with Yosemity installed try to connect to the internal site https://privat.alecta.se in Safari, they get a timeout and "Can´t open page" message. If the refresh the page they get connected to the site. It works on other operating systems such as Maverick, Windows regardless of browser.

    Hi Dan
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Usually "can't find the server" means the DNS codes supplied by your Internet Provider are somewhat lacking (Firefox has its own Network mechanism, so the two are not comparable). The alternative is to add DNS codes from other sources. Here's how to do it in Leopard:
To add the codes, go to System Preferences>Network. Click on your internet connection - either Ethernet or Airport, then "advanced". In the DNS panel enter on separate lines the following OpenDNS codes: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. Select "OK", then "apply".
In the Network panel, if Ethernet or Airport (whichever you use) is not at the top of the list, click on the "gear icon" at the left bottom. Select "set service order". When the help box opens drag your connection type to the top of the list. Select "apply" when complete.
    Restart Safari.

  • Restart Firefox Without Re-Opening Pages

I want to restart Firefox without re-opening previous session. There are 2 items about how to do this in the support database but they are too technical for me to understand.

You should be able to, inside firefox, click on Tools, then Options. Then, you should see something like "When Firefox starts: show my pages from last time". Change that to be "My Home Page".

  • Safari Sometimes Fails to Open

A regularly occurring problem, sometimes Safari fails to open after I log onto my machine. I click the icon, the icon changes to loading and then nothing happens. The process is running in the task manager, but no Safari browser.
Restarting the computer fixes this and the following time I'm able to open Safari browser, but it's incredibly annoying and any solutions would be great. Thanks

    Kia ora Mrshine.
I don't necessarily have an immediate fix to offer, just a theory. (If anyone else does have an immediate fix, please feel free to dive in and rescue Mrshine from me!)
sometimes Safari fails to open after I log onto my machine.
    (1) Are other people using the machine on different user accounts?
    (2) If so, are you using Fast User Switching to move between accounts?
    (3) If so, have other people been logged in and using Safari prior to you?
The thought here ... although I can't point to relevant documentation for Safari ... is that some Apple software for Windows doesn't like Fast User Switching (most notably iTunes). I'm wondering if Safari 4.0.4 is a bit like that too.
The scenario would be that Safari is still open in a different account on the PC when you go to log on. So when you log on, there's a Safari.exe process *already running* in your user account. And one of the things that has been known to cause "error-message-free" launch failures for Apple software on Windows PCs is having the process for that program *already running* prior to attempting to launch the program. (I've seen "stuck-on" iTunes.exe processes causing error-message-free iTunes launch failures before, and "stuck-on" PictureViewer.exe processes causing error-message-free Picture Viewer launch failures before.)
Assuming that you're not the only person using the PC, and you're using Fast User Switching, etc, you could check for this when you first log on. Prior to starting Safari, bring up Task Manager, head to the Processes tab, click on "Image name" to sort the processes alphabetically, and check to see if there's a Safari.exe already running. Are the occasions when Safari won't launch for you also the occasions when a Safari.exe is already running in your processes?
If so, you could try just doing an "end process" on the Safari.exe that is already running, and seeing if you can close it. Then you should be able to launch Safari. (A hassle, but slightly less of a hassle than having to reboot the PC.)

  • Safari "Failed to Open Page", unlike Firefox, Netscape, etc.

I am getting this only with Safari -
Safari can’t connect to the server.
Safari can’t open the page “http://www.apple.com/” because it could not connect to the server “www.apple.com”.
This happens on every page I try and open, but only with Safari. I am using firefox right now.
I have erased the cache, trashed the com.apple.safari.plist thingy, turned off popup blocker and everything else that I have read on these posts.
This is very similar to Karen C's problem from earlier today, except their discussion stopped short of telling what to do if only Safari is not working. What are the next steps to fix this?
Also, until I get this fixed, how do I set email preferences so that hyperlinks do not try and launch Safari?
    Thanks! -

    thanks anyway
