Safari Font Smoothing: Not an option?

I just purchased an iMac yesterday. It is incredible. I've done some research with the programs installed, and I came across the following web page that discusses how to turn on "font smoothing" with Safari: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/apple/make-fonts-less-fuzzy-in-safari-for-windows /
However, when I follow the author's directions, I do not see the option for "font shadowing" -- I see everything else: standard font, fixed-width font, display images when page opens, and default encoding. I upgraded Safari to 3.1 (as my computer came with a slightly less version) last evening, too.
Is this still possible? Am I missing something?

Thanks, Bee! That explains everything.
My concern is, that in Safari, lowercase i's look like lowercase l's. I would show you a screenshot, but I don't think a "Print Screen" button exists, does it?
When you visit the following link, the text on the screen makes the separation between the dot in the "i" nonexistent:
http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com
I hope you know what I am referencing. When I'm typing in this box, they appear fine. But, when I view certain web pages, they do not. I do hope this makes sense. Is this fixable or something I will just have to live with?

  • Font smoothing not working

I am using OS X Yosemite. Back in earlier versions of OS X, there was an option that would set the minimum font smoothing size. Fonts at a lower size than this in most applications would appear jagged. I set this to the highest value (9-12 px or something). After upgrading, the option for this was lost, and all the apps that this affected have jagged text that looks very annoying. This is especially true in Wolfram Mathematica:
Is there any way to fix this (i.e., lowering the font smoothing minimum font size) and get rid of this issue?

  • Wine font smoothing not working

Yeah, so I'm trying to do the classic font smoothing operation (or whatever you wanna call it) with Wine but it seems I'm just unable.
Here's how it should be done - no matter what I just can't get to work anymore (used to work some months ago with older wine): https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=62334
I've also tried moving the configuration folder (.wine) out of the way - but no luck.
Does it work with anybody else? Using (wine) 1.1.38 here - didn't work with 1.1.37 either.

  • Iphone ios 7 safari font size (not again)

does anyone read the forum using iphone ios 7 and find that the text too small?
The only way is to pinch to zoom but it doesn't fit in screen. No way to adjust font size in the browser and fit the screen.
    Irritating ever since the beginning...

    Hi LexGear,
The first troubleshooting steps that I would suggest for you is to simply restart your phone, then reset your phone if the issue persists:
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset

  • Font smoothing issues

Hi all. I noticed some others were complaining about font smoothing not seeming to work in Carbon applications (e.g. Camino, Firefox, MS Word and even iTunes). It seems the subpixel font-aliasing system preference (e.g. light) is ignored and, instead, the ugly CRT font smoothing is used.
I am puzzled this has not received a lot of attention, since it immediately bothered me when I received my Macbook Pro today.
Is everyone experiencing this font smoothing problem? I used the Migration Assistant to copy all files from my previous (Tiger-installed) Powerbook. Does anyone not having used the Migration Assistant also suffer from the font smoothing issue?

TinkerTool didn't make any difference for me. I played around with it and found that there was no improvements using it or disabling font smoothing.
I have watched DVD's on this LCD being played with my MacBook. I have seen 2MB+ full screen digital pictures. Both the DVD and digital pics look absolutely amazing on it.
It's only the fonts that appear blurry or in some areas they appear to have a shadown to the right. This happens with any text that appears in every app.
Keep in mind too, Windows Vista looks perfect on this display, but my prized MacBook looks really sub-par.
I'm not quite following you on changing the display preferences to change to pixel size to that of the MacBook...

  • Deactivated Subpixel Font Smoothing In Safari

I was reading an apple technical note ( https://developer.apple.com/library/safari/technotes/tn2220/_index.html ) within the Safari browser and noticed that the text font did not appear to be smoothed. I confirmed the fact by zooming and making note of the lack of color within the letter which is a sure marker of font smoothing. Late that day I noticed the same thing in the Harmony Central Forums ( http://www.harmonycentral.com/t5/Electric-Guitars/Review-NGD-Xavier-XV-500-Pics- and-Recording/m-p/29888705/highlight/true#M3683950 ). I then opened the same pages in both Firefox and Chrome, both of with rendered the text using subpixel font smoothing. One further thing that stuck me as odd is that Safari does use subpixel rendering on certain pages, such as the text in this forum. I have searched for an option to turn subpixel smoothing on within the Safari preferences, but had no luck along that route.
I don't think this has anything to do with it but I thought I would mention that I have the "Use LCD Font Smoothing" within the General System Preferences set to Level 2 (done with a terminal command). edit- I actually just set LCD Font Smooth to the standard (bolder) on setting and then restarted Safari. It made the text that was previously smoothed dark, but had no effect on the previously (and still) un-smoothed text.
I was hoping someone could tell me what is going on here and how to activate subpixel smoothing within Safari, because I like the browser and the way smoothed fonts look.
(I am using Mavericks, Safari 7, Chrome 31 and Firefox 25)

Unfortunately, we do not support fonts on your operating system. Hopefully another customer is more familiar with this.

  • Mavericks / safari bad FONT SMOOTHING

    Hi,
The option to disable font smoothing in OSX for small characters size (< 9 )  is not listed anymore in the General preferences panel of mavericks. Safari 7 with smoothing on small fonts is very hard to read on external monitors. Is there a hidden option to restore this VERY USEFUL function.
    Thanks.

I couldn't find any info on this either.
The only way to fix this might be hidden in their stores. It's hidden under the RETINA name

  • Fonts Do Not Display Correctly in Safari and Firefox

Certain fonts do not display smoothly in Safari and Firefox. They appear to have little pieces of the letters missing. I'm sure others have experienced this problem before but I could not find how to fix this. On the Apple Discussions the fonts look fine... on Google for example, they look messed up. I do not know specifically which font(s) are displayed weird but it happens frequently. This happens in Safari and Firefox on my MacPro and MacBookPro. Is there a setting to fix this?
    Thanks,

Look for Helvetica Fractions and Times Phonetic Fonts, if you have them,
they can be the usual suspects.
Check the Text encoding in both Safari & FF, under the "View" menu.
In System preferences-> Personal (top section) in Appearance tab->
on the last portion of the panel Font smoothing Style: set that to Automatic
If those don't help, see this users tip excellent article Kurt Lang's ~ Font Management in Mac OS X

  • Is there an issue with Safari in Iphones and Ipads where it does not recognize option disabled="disabled" tag properly?

    Greetings everybody,
I have run into a peculiar problem with the Safari browser on mobile platforms (IPad, IPod, IPhone) which I hope I can find a solution for in this community.
I just launched a new website where I sell products with certain variations, for example please view this link: http://www.finerribbon.com/aegean-single-face-satin-ribbon.html
On this particular product, the product variants are supposed to work in such a way where:
If you select the value "1/8" from the "Choose Ribbon Width" field
    THEN
The only options active and available to choose from in the "Choose Roll Size" field should be: 500 Yds, 20 Yds & Sample Swatch
Now, if we browse to the above link in Safari using a desktop or a laptop, there are no problems at all, but if we browse to the above link using an IPhone or an Ipad, then we have a problem where all the options are available regardless of the values chosen, basically the above functonality does not work.
I was told that there an issue with Safari in Iphones and Ipads where it does not recognize option disabled="disabled" tag properly, is this true? Can anyone advise me if there is a solution to this problem? I would sincerely apperciate it.
Thank you very much for your time and help!

  • Font in GTK2 apps are not using font smoothing in cinnamon. GTK3 does.

    Hi,
My GTK2 apps like GIMP, chromium fonts are not really using font smoothing but GTK3 apps look fine.
    Any help is appreciated.

Chazza wrote:Does the following application help at all? Link: http://qt-apps.org/content/show.php/Qt5 … ent=168066
Yes, unfortunately this did not fix the problem. I did put the environmental variable in .profile and relogged, the result was unfortunately the same. I've managed to fix fonts in Clementine using qtconfig-qt4 after some fiddling, but applications like Docky and Chromium still have the monospace font.
    cedeel wrote:Eh, Chromium isn't a Qt application.
Ah, my bad. Do you know of a way to fix that problem anyway?

  • Safari 4 fonts are not clear on the screen.....

I downloaded and installed Safari 4 for Windows over the weekend.
I find that the fonts are not clear...they are actually fuzzy. Right now I have this page side by side with another browser and the type is definitely different.
    Any thoughts?
    Thank you

    First, try resetting your phone:
Press the sleep/wake button & home button at the same time, keep pressing until you see the Apple logo, then release.

Even though I have LCD font smoothing disabled, Mountain Lion still uses it in PDF views, Safari’s location bar, Mail’s message view, and the dialogs for mounting encrypted disk images. Is there any solution to this problem? Also diabled the Smoothing in the SystemPrefs and also via Terminal. Font smoothing is still there. Very annoying, especially in PDF attachments in Apple Mail.

Try feeding Safari a user-defined CSS file with font-smoothing tweaks (including none). The filename and its filesystem location are arbitrary. Use your favorite coding editor.
Safari > Preferences > Advanced > Style Sheet:
Here is an example with all elements uncommented. Pick the one that works best for your Safari viewing and comment out the others:
Preview. Try Preview > Preferences > PDF > Smooth text and line art (uncheck)

I've tried Firefox and wget (a command line tool to retrieve web pages and files). Both lead to 500 server error.
