Safari fonts go bad!??

This started 2 days ago.  I seem to have a problem where certain websites (TUAW, MacDaily News) display perfectly after a restart, but after some time the fonts seem to no longer be displayed.  If I restart, fine, and then they will at some point go belly up.   I've gone to Font Book and made sure the necessary fonts are turned on (they are) and I cannot seem to get this to stop.  I'm now using Firefox which doesn't seem to have that problem.
Any thoughts or ideas on how to fix this?  I really enjoy Safari but if I can't see the web page, it is worthless to me.

Open the Console app   /Applications/Utilities
Type font in the search field top right corner of the window. Any messages may give you an idea of why Safari is displaying the capital A's.
And try typing in Lucida Grande. That one may be the cullprit.
And try validating fonts from the FontBook file menu.

  • Safari Font Help!

I recently bought a Macbook Pro and I have been moving my font collection (which is huge) from my PC to my Mac. After I finished installing my fonts I decided to browse around on the Internet. Somehow, during my font process, my Internet font was changed to one of my fonts which is kind of hard to read. I've gone into the Safari font preferences and tried to change the main font. Nothing works. Any suggestions?

I'm having trouble with fonts in Safari too. I set them to the original fonts, but nothing changes. I used Font Book to validate my fonts. I deleted all bad or duplicate fonts and now validating my fonts shows no problems. But still, websites come up BOLD. I've read about other people with problems like this. Short of reinstalling my system software (which I'd like to avoid doing), is there a fix? I've gone through a bunch of solutions I've found on Apple discussions and none of them work. Help!

  • Lion Safari font problems

After Lion install Safari shows text as AAAAAAA. Have removed all the TrueType fonts doubling with OpenType, but problem still exist. Also removed Safari prefs, to no avail. Is there a solution or is Apple aware of this problem and do we have to wait for an update??

New Web Open Fonts standard has been adopted by Apple for Safari 5.1 running under Lion.
Garbage (Last Resort Font) is displayed in Safari 5.1 in place of improper fonts.
Problem may be caused by Duplicate Fonts or bad kind of Fonts.
Type 1 Postscript Fonts are no longer accepted by Safari.
Use only Open Type or TrueType Fonts.
Duplicate Fonts must be eliminated with FontBook.
    NB:
    Results are not guaranteed!
Restart of the System doesn't solve the problem permanently.

  • Fonts look bad in OSX jagged text

    Hello
I thought apple gave us font smoothing in OSX! My fonts look terrible in QuarkXpress6.0. Is this what I have to look forward to? I miss my ATM.
I did the "font smoothing thing" in appearence-no change.
Also will all my older fonts from when I used OS 7 +8, will these still work in OSX? and by Quark XPress?
    Please enlighten me!
all fonts look bad; Goudy old style, bellvue etc. (postscript type 1)
    imac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   21" screen

if I zoom out in Quark to view document at say 125% the 45 pt type really looks bad
Hmm. I'm unable to duplicate your problem. I've pasted some random text into Quark, sized it to 45 pt and set the zoom to 125%. No matter if I go up or down, the fonts look very smooth with both Goudy Old Style and News Gothic (I have the Adobe version, not MT, which is from MonoType). Well, if I look real close, I can see a little bit of jaggies around curves. But nothing very noticable.
Is your 21" monitor a CRT or LCD? LCD always produce the best image when used at their native resolution. A CRT's best display varies depending on whether it has a shadow mask or aperture grill tube. If your monitor has an independent control for sharpening, it may be too high.
I have some fonts installed that I don't know where they came from ex: News Gothic MT (Microsoft I think) Will these view and print okay in any program?
As long as it's a standard Mac suitcase style TrueType font, or a complete and proper Type 1 PostScript font, it should just as well as any other.
I keep all my fonts in classic folder and manage w/font book (thats another story) It seems that my classic apps, Illustrator, see most of the fonts all the time eventhough I turned many off in fontbook. Also illustrator doesn't see ALL the fonts.
That's a handful. When it comes to Classic, the rules are a little different. Fonts you manually place into the OS 9 Fonts folder, or are put there by the OS when activating them from Font Book with OS 9 as the choice to be activated for, fonts are then available to both Classic and OS X.
If you deactivate them in Font Book, the fonts will become unavailable to OS X apps. However, any Classic apps will continue to see them until you shut down all OS 9 applications and Classic. In other words, once you open fonts for Classic, they can't be closed to Classic without shutting the entire environment down. Confused yet?
As far as Illustrator not seeing all the fonts, that relates to this part of your question:
Please explain the limitations of classic apps and fonts.
Classic can use any fonts that were in existence for the Mac before OS X. All of your older Mac TrueType and Type 1 PostScript fonts will work in OS X and Classic. Fonts that will work as is in OS X that you couldn't use before on a Mac are PC TrueType fonts. If you have copied any of the OS X .dfonts into the OS 9 Fonts folder, those will not work. A .dfont is a variation of a TrueType font, with the data in the data fork rather than the resource fork as they are with the older Mac TrueType fonts. Neither OS 9 or any Classic apps can read these fonts. Those are likely the ones not showing up in Illustrator.
It sounds like you do a lot of work with fonts. While Apple has improved Font Book quite a bit in Tiger, it's still very much a consumer font manager for those who handle fonts only occasionally. You'd be much better off using a font manager such as Suitcase X1 or Font Agent Pro.

  • Yosemite Safari Font Issue

    Hi!
I just updated to Yosemite and my Safari fonts have been replaced by what appears to be Arial Bold Italics.
Everything looks Bold and Italics, even when I am typing this message.
Can someone help me with this font issue?
    Thanks.

I'm having this issue too. It starts this way and next I will see all the fonts corrupt or change to a bold arial font. I'm totally sick of this. Restarting in safe mode, repair permissions, remove caches and preferences and when that doesn't work, reset Safari. Apple needs to fix this ASAP.
I'm not buying a new mac till they do!

  • Font contains bad/widths message, what does that mean?

I saved a pdf file and a message came up with "The font * contains bad/width". There are places in my pdf, that have bad font formatting. What can I do to get my font formatting to correct itself? I had a file that was perfect, I then renamed it to change some parts of it. The newly renamed file is giving me this error message. I have Acrobat 8 professional and Windows XP.

Are the places with bad font formatting, the places that were changed when you changed some parts of it? How did you change the file..insert another pdf page?...edited text? or what?

  • Turn off Safari font preferences

How do I turn off the Safari font size preferences to allow pages to choose their own fonts and font sizes? Like I can in the Firefox preferences.

I am not the original poster, but I am having similar problems with Safari, especially in displaying Greek Fonts.
I have all the necessary Greek fonts installed on my computer (and then some!). Pages with Greek text encoded in their style sheets display fine in Firefox, but Safari only displays the English letters instead of the Greek fonts.
Is there no way to allow pages to select their own fonts in Safari like there is in Firefox?
    Try this link:
    http://www.htmlbible.com/sacrednamebiblecom/kjvstrongs/B46C013.htm
The Greek letters display fine for me in Firefox with the above link, but, in Safari, nothing but English characters.

  • IPhone Safari Font Sizes are bad

Anyone else notice the bad font sizes in iPhone Safari?
I am writing a web site and am having trouble getting safari to render fonts on the iphone the same way they are rendered on safari... I tried changing the font-family to Verdana and Arial since those are supposed to be supported on both the iPhone and Mac Safari but that did not fix it...
As a great example go to google and search for something on your iphone.
The word "Sign in" on the top right is too large...
The word "Web" (right under the search box) is too small...
The other words in the blue bar with "Web" are also too large...
Right now my current solution is to pin point things that are too small and too large and on a case by case basis change the font sizes for those elements... This is pretty ridiculous when you have a large site and lots of pages...

Sweet your thing wasnt right but pointed me to the right location:
    I just needed:
    html {-webkit-text-size-adjust:none}

  • Fonts look bad in safari how to fix it

Hey all, just moved up to Lion and not happy with the way text looks on webpages in Safari. It looks skinny and small. Very difficult to read, it's giving me a headache.
Is there any way to fix it so it looks good like it did in Snow Leopard?

Try clearing the browser cache and reset. Quit and relaunch the browser.
If no different try a SafeBoot and restart as normal.

  • After installing MS Office 2011, Safari fonts are displaying incorrectly

I'm running OS X v. 10.6.4 on an Intel iMac.
This morning, I installed Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac, and when I went to my safari browser and googled something, my fonts look like the image below:
Even as I'm typing this now, this font is showing the same way! I did a thorough uninstall of MS Office, emptied my font cache, browser cache, reset safari, logged out + in, restarted my comp 100 times, and I'm at a loss.
Is it possible my arial font was corrupted somehow? I know Office installs its own evil fonts, which I'm pretty sure I have now deleted. How would I get a new, working version of the default Arial font and reinstall it?

Office 2011 installs a bunch of fonts that conflict with those installed by OS X. Read section 3 of Font Management in OS X to see which to remove, and which to keep.
I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.

  • Safari Font has changed on some web pages

The font on my Safari application has changed for some sites including YouTube and Yahoo. Most other sites are unaffected, including Apple's site. The font is hard to read and I cannot figure out how to get it to go back to it's "factory setting" so to speak.
I've tried going to Safari on the status bar. Then to Preferences>Appearance and changed both standard font and fixed-width font to Times at size 16. This has not solved my problem. Default encoding is "Western (Mac OS Roman)
I don't know if it is related, but I recently installed a large pack of fonts to use in Photoshop. The problem started somewhat after that.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

    Phil --
Without a uploaded photo of the garbled font,
I would suggest looking for Helvetica Fractions if
the garbled font has some numbers in it.
You may have duplicates of Helvetica, or Helvetica Neue
or Arial. The font you're talking about seems to be a sans serif,
so I would start carefully look at Helvetica and Arial (all subsets, too)
    in Font Book.

  • How do I change the fonts on the main page.My fonts have recently changed without my doing anything. They are like 6 point instead of the 12 I am used to. Email font is now huge. Is this an ATT/Yahoo problem or Firefox. Safari fonts seem to be o.k.

How do I change the fonts on the home page? They recently shrank from 12 to very tiny..(6 pt?). I did nothing to change them, but after the event tried to change them using "preferences-Fonts"which had no effect. ATT seems to have made a change in their email. The fonts in the email are now huge (18 pt?). This could be an ATT/Yahoo problem with Mac, although Safari seems to be working o. k.

Jim, extensions are also add-ons. Add-ons include extensions, themes and plugins.
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you need to make sure it's not coming from one of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] and select ''Disable all add-ons''. If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and theme. You can troubleshoot plugins the same way.
If you want support for one of your add-ons, you'll need to contact its author.

  • 'Font contains bad/Widths' and 'Cannot find/create font' errors when saving pdf as Other Reduced Size PDF

I am exporting .indd files from within Indesign as pdf files, opening in Acrobat Pro XI. I have no trouble creating the initial pdf file, however, when I go to Save Other > Reduced Size PDF I get error messages. Depending on the file, I receive either the message, "The font (Myriad Pro) contains bad/Widths" replacing the text with dots or "Cannot find or create the font (Helvetica) Some characters may not print or display properly" replacing text with dots or boxes.
My confusion is that the file is exporting to pdf from Indesign without error, it is only when I try to Save Other> Reduce Size PDF that the error occurs.
Also, it is only occurring on five out of 120 pages. These same fonts are on other pages and I have no trouble at all with exporting or Reduce Size PDF.
More frustrating is that I have never had this problem occur in all my previous versions of Acrobat using the same process and typefaces.
I am reaching deadline on this and cannot find a solution other than to reload Acrobat 9 and ditch this upgrade.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I, too have experienced this issue. Upon export from INDD CS6, I see the error message "The font 'IXWIPX+SourceHanSansSC-Bold' contains bad \Widths."
The only items on the single-page InDesign document I'm trying to export are copies of a one-page PDF (which was extracted from a longer PDF, arranged into a cover format). I can provide all files as necessary. The longer document that the one page came from also experienced an error when I tried to print to Adobe PDF. While I still get a PDF of the cover on export, despite the "bad \widths" message, it won't print from certain machines. I get nothing (not even an empty shell file) from the attempt to print the larger document (where the cover elements came from) to PDF.
I can deal with these issues with a few unorthodox workarounds, but wanted to offer comments or volunteer to help test fixes if possible.
For the record, I'm really not enjoying Acrobat XI. It doesn't seem to have much by way of new features (at least not that I use), and some of those I used most in version X are gone or less functional. Common fonts like Times New Roman are often not found (even though they are definitely on my system); I have a much harder time editing text through the new interface, and I have a few other small gripes—some that I don't have time to get into, others that wouldn't really matter, except that they weren't a problem until I "upgraded." Just sayin'.
    Thanks for listening.
