Safari freezes computer

When Safari is launched it takes forever, then I can't do anything as there is a spinning colored ball on everything when I try to get out. It sometimes lets me get access to one thing but the computer will then freeze up. I have gone thru the discussion board and found similar problems and trashed the cookie file etc. Nothing has worked. Plus I do not know how to get a report to send anyone as safari is frozen all the time. I use Firefox as my main web browser and have no problems with that.

Hi
Welcome to Apple Discussions
Safari freezes usually indicates an incompatible element in the mix. Try Safari from another User Account. If you require assistance with setting up a new User Account, follow this guidance from Apple.
You can ignore step 7 in the article. Also, on the system preference>Accounts panel, click on "log-in" options. There, select "fast user switching". This allows you to go back and forth between user accounts via an icon in your Menu Bar at the top of the computer screen.
Log-on to the new account and start Safari. If Safari opens without problems in the new account, then your problem is specific to your regular user account. Otherwise, similar response means a system-wide problem.
Post back.

  • 10.5.2 made Safari freeze my whole computer

Before Leopard, Safari would freeze (apparently when viewing a Flash site; I'm not positive this was the trigger) and the freeze would freeze the Finder and many other apps as well. I used Firefox and that solved it. When Leopard came out, I was able to use Safari again. With 10.5.2, the problem returned on the G5 dual, but not on my Intel MacBook Pro. Safari freezes, I can't quit, I can't even force quit and I can't do much else. Sometimes, if I let the computer sit for 10 minutes or so, everything is okay (after I quit Safari, that is), but not always. I'm back to Firefox and I don't feel good about it. Any ideas on how to get back to work?

I have the same problems on my iMac G5. Both browsers, actually any browser, and usually with Flash heavy content. There are a number of threads about this, including my own. None of them have any real answers. I suspect it has something to do with the ATI drivers. I base this on research of other people and stuff I found googling.
Btw, I also seemed to have similar problems after the latest Tiger update. This was one of the reasons I upgraded to Leopard a couple of weeks ago (clean-up the system, fresh install, etc.).
    ps.
Also check your /var/log/windowserver.log for message like below, I get them whenever a freeze start to happen (you can tail -f the log file in terminal, then browse to a flash site to test):
    Feb 26 21:49:16 69 kCGErrorIllegalArgument: CGXSetWindowTransform: Invalid window 2523
    and:
Feb 26 21:49:01 69 kCGErrorFailure: CGXDisableUpdate: UI updates were forcibly disabled by application "Dock" for over 1 second. Server has re-enabled them.

  • Why does Safari freeze when the cursor hovers across "Bookmarks"?

    Safari v 4.1
    Hi,
When I move the cursor over "Bookmarks" in the menu at the very top of the window, Safari freezes for about 5 minutes. It can also freeze when the cursor is simply passing under the "Bookmarks". When I'm moving the cursor horizontally across the entire screen, I have to keep the cursor well below the top menu bar to avoid freezing Safari. Otherwise Safari is working OK. I often Force Quit" Safari when this happens, but if I wait, it will unfreeze.
This is all about hovering, not clicking.
Any suggestions as to why this is happening and how to fix it.
    Thanks, Rafael

    Hi Carolyn.
First, about resetting. I've never done it before, and I recall hearing—but have no direct experience—that it practically wipes the slate clean. I've built a very sophisticated Bookmarks Bar and Bookmarks Menu, and because I'm a researcher, I never erase history. When I started using Safari a long time ago, I was told by Apple to regularly erase history. Then a couple of years ago I was told by someone I trust that it's OK to keep it.
I regularly empty Cache and remove cookies.
Are these the top 5 buttons?:
    1 Clear history
    2 Reset Top Sites
3 Remove all webpage preview images
    4 Empty the cache
    5 Clear the Downloads window
I got this list from Safari Help>Resetting Safari. I'm using Safari 4.1, but I noticed that this help page referred to Safari 5 in the 'Reset Top Sites' explanation: "Reset Top Sites: … Top Sites page reverts to showing the webpage previews displayed when you first installed Safari 5."
    As for the rest:
2 Reset Top Sites—I’ve never made use of this
3 Remove all webpage preview images—not familiar or I don’t recognize what it is.
4 Empty the cache—Fine with that
5 Clear the Downloads—window Fine with that
I’m letting you know about these details before I proceed with your instructions.
    Thanks for responding,
    Rafael
PS Since I'm asking about Bookmarks here, I've been meaning to find out something about my Safari Bookmarks.html that is exported, then backed up to one of my external HDs. If Safari or my computer crashes, and I re-install Safari, then import those bookmarks, are they re-created to look just as they do now in 'Show All Bookmarks'?
I have some old bookmarks (or 'Favorites' I think they were called) that, when imported (in an html format?), appeared as a long list, rather than as a neatly tiered record of folders and files.

  • Safari freezes

Safari freezes on me...I get the spinning wheel and have to force quit. Usually happens when I am on www.myspace.com.
Several people have streaming videos, video codes on thier site...several which will not play on my computer...I dont know if that could be a cause of the problem or not. Is there a plug in I should install? Just dont know how to fix this annoying problem.

If it has something to do with the network, how many have routers? Or broadband modems?
Something that was a problem with networking on previous Mac OSes before OS X, the dreaded Mac pause. That problem was fixed with static IPs. That meant not using the automatic connection or the DHCP settings. We had to set the IP addresses manually from the list of IP addresses that were not in the list of automatically assigned IP addresses.
I did notice, when everything froze up, if I unplugged the power supply from my router, everything woke up. Which makes me think that this problem has re-arisen.
I am trying this "fix" now to see what happens.
I would have thought that this problem would have been fixed in OS X. Maybe as someone else pointed out that it is JAVAScript, that would be a shame.

  • After 10.9.2 update safari freezes

After the 10.9.2 update the week of April 21, Safari freezes up. I can still move the pointer but nothing else. I cannot force quit or open any other apps.  I shut down the machine and when I reboot I get the gray screen.  I did a safe boot, restarted and it worked until the next freeze.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line

to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At or near the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "System Version." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • IPhone 4S Safari freezes when switching tabs

    Hi.
Mobile Safari in my iPhone 4S freezes when switching tabs.  This does not happen every time Safari is running, but it happened one too many already.  Safari freezes even if I only have one tab and wanted to create a new one.  The app would usually freeze while doing the switch, tho it also froze just before the tabs switch.  Has anyone experienced the same?  Please help.  Thank you.

User troubleshooting after a reset is a restore. First from a backup and if that doesn't help, then as a new device. Remember a restore will delete data from the phone. Make sure you have everything backed up and synced to the computer before attempting the restore. If that does not help, make an appointment with the Apple Genius Bar to check for hardware faults.

  • Safari freezes when trying to open files.

I am trying to open files on my computer through Safari. I am trying to open a file through Avery.com, but it's not Avery that is the problem, I don't believe. All I have to do is open Safari, click on File>Open File, and the same thing happens every time: it freezes. I've never had a problem with it before until now and I am extremely frustrated.
The "Open File" window pops open and all the iMovies start to try to load up. Well, I don't want to open iMovies, I want to open a file that is on my desktop. But I can't click on "desktop;" I can't click on anything. The little rainbow-colored icon starts spinning and Safari freezes up. I thought maybe the computer was just trying to load a bunch of videos, so I went away for a while (nearly an hour), but when I came back, that stupid rainbow-colored disc was still spinning away and I had to force a "quit."
I have restarted the computer, I have updated the computer, I have checked the Internet Plug-ins (of which I have none. Is this because I emptied the cache and deleted all history? I thought maybe that would help safari, but it didn't), and now I have no idea what to do.
Thanks for any and all help.

    Hi,
    Check Safari/Preferences - Extensions.
And empty the Safari cache either from the menu bar, Safari/Empty Cache or Command + Option + E on your keyboard.
    And try restarting your Mac.

  • Safari freezes for a minute or two and there's a rotating color wheel

Quite often, when going to different websites and stuff, Safari will freeze up, and there will be a rotating color wheel, and then after a couple minutes it will load the page. It's pretty annoying and I'd like to get it fixed. It's a Macbook Pro with the Snow Leopard update on Mac OS X. I'm pretty new to Macs(just got this about 2 weeks ago). Any help would be great. Thanks!

HI... welcome to Apple Discussions and congrats on our new Mac!
    Use Open DNS
Click the computer icon and follow the instructions.
Also, from the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache
and... from the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
    And...
    1. Quit Safari if it's running.
    2. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Safari and delete all the sub-folders within that one.
    3. Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete any of these files you have there:
    • Downloads.plist
    • History.plist
    • LastSession.plist
    4. Restart Safari and restart your Mac.
*"when going to different websites and stuff, Safari will freeze up"*
If Safari freezes up when visiting sites with Flash content, try Uninstalling the current Flash Player Plugin, then reinstall new.
How to uninstall and reinstall Flash Player plugin:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html
When you are finished uninstalling the old Flash plugin, go here and install a fresh copy
    of Flash Player plugin
    http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/
As with any installations, repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Safari freezes , goes blank

Hi, i have mountain lion and safari 6.2.2 (up to date)
My problem is that sometimes I'm on internet (on safari) and out of nothing, safari freezes and all my tabs go blank, if i wait nothing happens, so i have to close safari and open it to continue using it (i lost all my tabs and open stuff so is pretty bad) , sometimes if i press on new tab while all other tabs are blank a windows jumps that says that to open a new tab i must "close" or reload all other tabs that arent working…. but this not always happens.
I cant use safari really, and i hate all the others navigators.
I don't use adblock or any extension.
as i write this i will updaet flash to see if its that but i updated flash before and the problem persisted.

    Sure, here it is:
    Problem description:
safari tabs go blank, won’t respond until i close them all

  • Safari freezes for a split second constantly

Hi, my safari freezes for a split second when scrolling up and down a page before resuming all the time, it also does it whilst streaming video like youtube, So its briefly starts/stops, really starting to annoy me, can anyone help?
    thanks
    R

had this come up from tech tool deluxe,
how do I find and check recently installed hardware?
    Video RAM
    Failed
Video RAM, as all components of your video circuitry, must be fully functional for graphics to be properly displayed. Damaged VRAM can cause missing bits, screen noise, system lock ups, or freezes. TechTool Deluxe tests the VRAM on the Macintosh main logic board, as well as some third-party video cards.
If the VRAM test should fail, try these steps in order and run the test again after each step:
    o Quit all other applications.
    o Restart the system.
o Check any recently-added hardware for proper installation.
o Run the computer from another volume (if available).
    o Reinstall the OS.
    o Contact AppleCare.

  • My Safari freezes frequently when closing pages

    Hello
First of all, I apologize if this question has already been asked, but since I couldn't find anything to help me, I decided to create a thread.
When using my Safari to for example play an online video file, it works fine, but when I try to close the window Safari freezes up, and I have to force it to close... I do not know what could have caused this? I believe I have the Safari v3, but I am not sure...
    Thank you, in advance
    Best regards
    ShortyDenmark

    Try
    1.Repair permissions
Click the GO in the finder bar at the top then to Utilities / open Disk utility / On the left click Mac. HD then on the bottom center click repair permissions
    2.Trash the Safari .Plist
In a finder window, Click the Home folder (House icon on the left) and on the right hand side open Library, Then open Preferences folder, From here most are com.apple***.Plist's. Locate the file called Com.apple.safari.plist and drag it to the trash.
-Restart the computer and when back up, empty the trash and should be good to go.

  • Following an update Safari freezes

Safari freezes, no greying just no mouse clicking or key stroke operation. I can quit safari but...
I wrote this using safari but it froze and had to change to chrome. Chrome seems to work well.
I updated to safari 7.1 yesterday and the trouble started after that.
    Help.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Safari Freezes When Uploading

I'm trying to upload some pictures to an online account I have. When I click the browse button to select pictures, the window to browse my computer disappears and Safari freezes. I can't even force quit it so I have to manually turn off my computer. Any ideas or suggestions?

    HI,
From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Security tab. Make sure Java is enabled.
Quit Safari (Command + Q) then relaunch Safari.
trying to upload some pictures to an online account I have
If Java was already enabled, go back to the Security tab in Safari / Preferences then click: Show Cookies.
Delete all cookies related to the site you have problems uploading images to.
    Relaunch Safari and try again.
If that doesn't help, try resetting Safari from the Safari menu bar. Select the top 7 buttons, click Reset.
    Try again.

  • Help! Internet Browser Freezes Computer

Everytime I try to load Safari, my computer freezes and I have to force quit multiple times. What can I do to stop this?

I agree that I'd delete the preference file, first. You can find the safari preferences on your hard drive at user name/library/preferences/com.apple.safari.plist. If the plist file is corrupt, the application may act flakey or not work at all. The plist file records your preferences, so you'll need to renter any you've previously input.
There are several utilities, two of which are Preferential Treatment and OnyX that will check for corrupt plist files, if you want to go that route.

  • Safari freezes and won't open pages

Hi, I have been suffering from Safari freezing whilst opening the homepage, and then when click on any links it just stops loading anything. My homepage has been set to yahoo.co.uk, which partially opens, but then seems to not want to load images. The text and links show, but the links just don't react when clicked on. This has been going on for a couple of weeks now. I also have IE installed, which is fine, but I want to migrate to Safari for web use as more and more sites are recommending it.
    Can anyone help?
I also have an iTunes problem, which may or may not be related, but I'll post that in the relevant discussion.

Updating to Safari 6 for Lion may help.
Click here >  Safari Quits Every Time Opened: Apple Support Communities
Click the link posted by:  gregoryfromcork
That will automatically download this file >  Safari6Lion.pkg.download
    Now quit Safari.
Go to your Downloads folder and double click that file and follow the instructions for installing.
Then restart your Mac, try Safari.
