Safari frozen by ransomware popup; nothing working.

Please help! This is not behaving like all the other "virus" popups and I cannot find a resolution. I keep getting the same set of tips over and over and the problem remains.
I have ALREADY TRIED the following which have not worked:
Force quit Safari
Restart Safari with shift key pressed (everything remains grayed out on Safari menu and I am unable to click anywhere)
Restart Safari with shift key pressed while offline (same thing, WiFi is off and everything is grayed out and I am unable to click anywhere)
Command + W, then enter (someone recommended but also did not work)
Any NEW ideas would be much appreciated. I guess I could uninatall Safari and re-install but I would lose all my bookmarks and I'm not savvy enough to figure that all out. Thanks in advance!
Here's the popup:

Try Start up in Safe Mode.

Launch Safari.
Try "Reset Safari" from Safari menu.
Restart normally.
Hey dominic23!
Thank you so much for your assistance. Like I told Esquared, Safari is now functioning properly although I do not know what did the trick. I only tried two things, one being what Equared recommended by dragging the Safari preference file from the Library folder to the desktop. Safari did not open after that. I also tried force quitting the computer (holding down the power button until it goes off) which you recommended. Safari also didn't seem to respond after the restart. Shortly thereafter I hit a link in an email and Safari opened up normally. One of those two things - or both - must have done the trick.
I really appreciate your help and recommendations. Thank you!

Hi, a too full hard drive can really mess things up.
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, , try to clear at least 10 GB of space & empty the trash, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • How to re start iPad when nothing works?

My iPad if frozen... Nothing works. I have tried shutting it down while pressing the round button and it will not restart.
    Does anyone have a solution?

    Reset iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
Note: Data will not be affected.

  • I subscribe to Acorn TV. I am unable to stream their videos. I have no problem with Hulu, iTunes, Netflix. I have spoken with Acorn and have tried Firefox, Chrome and Safari, but nothing works. I am using a MacBook OS 10.6.8 and Firefox 3.6.12

I am a premium subscriber to AcornTV. I have been unable to stream video on my home MacBook Pro (OS 10.6.8) using Firefox 3.6.12. I can easily stream Hulu, iTunes, Netflix, etc, but NOT AcornTV. I have tried the AcornTV player on Safari, Chrome and Firefox, nothing works. I use Time Warner High Speed internet at home, and they claim the problem is on Acorn's end, which Acorn denies. The biggest frustration is that I CAN stream Acorn videos on my office iMac desktop, using the same OS and same version of Firefox (we have our own server at work, though).

I'm watching it right now on Firexfox, but it's on a Dell, not a Mac. Have you tired watching it on a Chrome or IE browser instead of Firefox? And does it work on those browsers?
You should continue to follow up with Acorn TV - email [email protected] and you will get help, from the CTO, if necessary. Also, they now have a diagnostic page built that can analyze your computer and it will give them more information about your system. So, if you haven't tried in two months, it might be worth trying again.

I have a 2009 Macbook Pro with 1T hdd 8GB Ram and ran Maverick without problem...Yosemite installation has me completely frozen, nothing works but the spinning ball...I had to force shutdown last night, and haven't turned it on again...what do you advise?  During installation emptied cache, etc. Backed up using time machine, fortunately.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

My screen is frozen on Safari. Hard rebot doesn't work. Shutting done doesn't help. What can I do?

Try Force Quitting Safari. You can access Force Quit either by clicking the Apple symbol in the upper right and choosing Force Quit or keyboard shortcut of Command - Option - Esc.

  • Nothing works! itunes, mail, appstore, safari and INSTALLER

I have huge problems with my Mac. I have the Mac OS X v.10.7 installed, but the main problem is that Installer doesn't work when downloading itunes, or new upgrades of Mac Os X. Every time I try the installer freezes (the program doenst anwear). I don't really now how this happened, maybe after some kind of a unexpected stop when I upgraded  a program. (I don't use these programs so often, so I dont remember when or how).
Unfortunetly I have unistalled itunes. I thought that the problems of connecting my iphone to the computer and the connecting issues to itunes store would be resolved with a reinstallation, BUT it turned out that I cannot install it again. Every time I try the installer freezes (the program doenst anwear). I Have tried to start the computer in safe-mode, to add new users etc. Nothing works.
I can't use Safari, it is only loading, but nothing happens (Firefox works perfectly)
    I can't open App Store, it's loading
My iphone doesn't show up in Finder when connecting
    Mail doesn't download any mails.
I cannot download any new upgrades
    Please help!

Your modem dose not have access to the internet, maybe the modem's main broadband cable is disconnected.
You should contact your ISP for access to the internet,he will come to your house and configure the modem...

  • Safari, iTunes, software update iCal not connecting. Firefox is fine. Tried Proxies, but not sure what to do there. Only one box was checked, I unchecked it, and made no difference. Have also tried some other DNS numbers, nothing worked yet.

    Hi There,
Safari, iTunes, software update iCal not connecting. Firefox is fine.
I have found some archieved discussions about this, but none that went  into detail about how to fix problem using proxies - I don't really  understand what they are/ do.
I went into the Proxies screen, Only one  box was checked, "Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV)" I unchecked it, and made no  difference. There was also some stuff written in the "Bypass proxy settings for these hosts and domains" I deleated that and nothing different happened. Have also tried some other DNS numbers,  nothing worked yet.
    Any suggestions?

I still have no idea what was wrong with Safari last week, but I opened it today, and its all working! Hurrah!
Woohoo! I'm a great fan of things fixing themselves. Fingers crossed in New Zealand for no further problems.

  • I keep having popups, I have tried a lot to fix it but nothing works.

A friend of mine tired downloading a movie and I think I've got a virus from it. I keep having pop-ups and whatever I do nothing works. I don't know what I should do.

you are right about the IOS number. I couldn't access my iPad so I guessed and guessed wrong about the number. It was the latest upgrade offered by Apple for my iPad, which I dowloaded and installed. I have done some sleuthing and discovered that some of the problems are the result of the Accessibility - Voiceover being activated. Once I figured that out, I was able to navigate somewhat better, though I now cannot turn Voiceover off. I slide the button and it just revert to On. The other problem I have now discovered that the iPad only rarely will accept my password. This is a password that I know and love and use many times during the day (as all of us iPhone and iPad users do) Now it seems to reject my password 80+% of the time. I would disable password protection if I could. I think I am going to have to talk to Apple directly but wonder if anyone else has had this kind of trouble with the newest IOS. It worked fine on my iPhone.
I will try triple tapping the home button if I can ever get it opened again.

In that case....if you have Apple Care, give support a call - otherwise, walk it into the nearest Apple Store.
    Good luck.

    Ideas on how to fix?
The flickering doesn't always happen but does come back after some time of use.

From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.

  • Safari frozen, tried everything

Safari frozen with blank screen, no url shown and nothing in search space either, no cursor. I have force quit the app, cleared cache, history, and cookies, force restarted, and even went so far as to do a complete restore, and it hasn't changed anything. All other apps seem to work just fine, and I installed another browser for web access, which also works fine, but of course any link to a website calls up Safari, so none of those links work. Any other ideas?

    Go to ~/Library/Safari
Move these files to the Trash.
    History.plist
    LastSession.plist
    Downloads.plist
    Restart your Mac, try Safari.
